How authentication work between web server and Browser
When a particular resource has been protected using basic authentication, Apache sends a 401 Authentication Required header with the response to the request, in order to notify the client that user credentials must be supplied in order for the resource to be returned as requested. Upon receiving a 401 response header, the client’s browser, if it supports basic authentication, will ask

Configuring Apache Web Server and PHP
[Update: You may download the MSI package of PHP instead of the ZIP one which would do all the set-up and configuration itself and you wouldn’t have to do the following by yourself] This is the crucial part guys, first I start off with giving the locations of the configuration files of Apache and PHP. Apache: [X:\…]\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\httpd.conf PHP: [Y:]\PHP\php.ini-dist [renamed to php.ini later] Now let’s start guys: 1. Start by backing up both the configuration files, you’d need them in case you mess up the files. 2 .Rename the php.ini-dist file to php.ini 3. Look for a line like below doc_root and make it look like doc_root =[X:\…]\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs be sure to change ’[X:\

      Tutorial: Making a Web Server
I was contacted by several readers of my previous post, Creating Your Own Web Server, with comments that it's lacking an actual tutorial on how to create the web server.Again, I am very weary of creating a tutorial that will favor only one web server or platform, so I am including a generic checklist that covers the creation of any web server, regardless of platform.STEP 0 - Find a computer that will become the web server. For excersise purposes, an older PC lying around or a Virtual Machine is more then sufficient.STEP 1 - Install an operating system on the designated Web Server computer. Operating System Elements - Minimize the number of other services. If possible, avoid GUI installation, and leave only the Web server service, and the secure remote management service of your choice (NOT

First of all, the title is inspired from Tommi's S60 Application blog, I really liked how this sounds, web Server in a pocket :) I wasn't intending to write anything about this app in the beginning. I was too lazy to test it and know exactly what it does. But out of boredom I just decided to give it a shot and it was really worth it. Shuttle SS21T as a Web Server on a Budget
Among my many other geeky duties, I help with system administration and system maintenance at the school where my wife works. Recently, their web server began to flake out — the system would reboot or hang for no obvious reason. It fell to me to investigate. I determined that the system motherboard was dying. The hardware was three to four years old, and the Linux distribution it ran at least a couple years older than that. It was definitely time for a new web server, top to bottom.

February 2007 Web Server Survey by Netcraft
In the February 2007 survey we received responses from 108,810,358 sites, an increase of 1.93 million from last month. Apache has a decline of 442K sites this month, and sees its share of the web server market slip by 1.47 percent to 58.7 percent. This is the first time Apache’s market share has been below 60 percent since September 2002. Microsoft-IIS gain 935K sites, continuing an advance that has seen Microsoft steadily chip away at what once seemed an insurmountable lead for Apache. In our Feb. 2006 survey, Apache held 68% market share, giving it lead of 47.5% over Windows (20.5% share). In this month’s survey, Microsoft’s share has improved to 31.0%, narrowing Apache’s advantage to 27.7%.
