Watermelon delight, or watermelon pie, is traditionally made in the Cyclades Islands as well as in some of the Dodecanese Islands. The traditional recipe uses an August watermelon from a waterless plantation - a field where different fruit and vegetables, such as melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, gumbo etc. are cultivated, without a drop of water. These fruits are usually smaller in size and extr
Nothing reminds me more of my childhood growing up in the summer than the smell of a freshly cut piece of watermelon. Building on that memory, nothing reminds me more of tailgating baseball games (when I was 21, of course) in the summer than the smell of a piece of watermelon completely saturated in liquor. [...]

Word is on the street that watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), God's gift to summertime family reunions, may produce a Viagra-like effect. As a commenter on reddit put it: "They cool you above and fire you up down below."This effect is apparently made possible by an amino acid called citrulline, which is found in both the rind and flesh of the watermelon. It's also found in mammals, where it is presen

Watermelon is regarded as a good fruit to quench thirst, but researchers say it may also be a natural Viagra. They believe that the juicy fruit could be used to help men who suffer from erectile
On hot days like the 4th of July my mother would slice into an ice cold watermelon to help cool us off. My online friend Stephen Bess recently wrote an interesting and informative post on the history of our love of the watermelon. Which got me to thinking about Watermelon Slim. So when you have a melon as a starter in a restaurant, that's why you have it at the start of the meal, because you can't stand up for a while. But men would have to eat at least six slices to have the same effect as one Viagra tablet. Japan has always had problems with spaces, especially in the urban areas. This space dilemma goes all the way to shelve spaces in grocery stores. Where one can see mega malls and super-duper markets in most western and eastern countries, the Japanese grocer had problems in stacking watermelons. There was a farmer who grew watermelons. He was doing pretty well, but he was frequently disturbed by some local kids who would sneak into his watermelons patch at night and eat his watermelons. After some careful thought, he came up with a clever idea that he thought would scare the kids away for sure.
He made up a sign and posted it in the field. The next day, the kids show up and they saw the

Moon and stars watermelonMoon and Stars watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is named for the large and small yellow blotches on the rind and the leaves of the plant (moons and stars). It is an open pollinated Amish heirloom variety of watermelon that at one time was thought to be extinct. Moon and Stars was grown by American gardeners sometime prior to the 1900's and was listed in seed catalogs up until the 1920's after which time it disappeared from the the market. After a search begun in the 1970's, a farmer in Missouri was found to be growing these watermelons in 1980. The Moon and Stars melon was featured in a 1982 issue of Mother Earth News resulting in a resurgence of its popularity. Several seed catalogs now list the Moon and Stars watermelon, including Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Seed Savers Exchange, and Pinetree Garden Seeds, where I obtained mine. The seeds now are also available in Australia and the UK and probably other parts of the world.Se

The other day at work, I continued my experimentation in sangria making. The time before when I made it with pineapple, mango juice, and peaches, I was struck with the urge to give watermelon a go. Turned out to be a pretty good idea, one worth repeating in your own kitchen.
Watermelon Sangria
*Half of a small seedless watermelon, cut into very small pieces
*Half a can of cream soda ( I used diet, but I think regular would be better)
*Bottle of sparkling wine
Mash the watermelon until it’s nice and juicy, then add soda and wine. Freeze for an hour, pour, and enjoy.

It is scorching out in my neck of the woods, and nothing is more enjoyable during the summer than a cold treat. My favorite thing to do this time of year is to cut up some fresh watermelon, put it in a freezable plastic container, and when frozen, eat it with a spoon like Italian ices. Watermelon is mostly just that, water, and naturally sweet. Additionally, you can take the frozen watermelon, puree it in a blender, and refreeze it if you want your watermelon ices a bit smoother. You can even dilute it more with water, freeze the melon puree, then when frozen, scrape it into a dish, and that is a "granita." You can add vodka to this if you're entertaining. The frozen melon can also be used in smoothies. There is a local drive-in near my house that makes awesome, but oh so fattening watermelon milkshakes in the summertime. I made my own fake version with a cup of skim milk, and the frozen melon, plus a Splenda packet and blended it for a second so it would still be chunky. Not exactly th

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS), has fiddled with nature, coming up with two new varieties of watermelon. One version contains more than 50 percent less sugar than the conventionally grown variety, and the other is middle-of-the-road as far as sweetness goes.Over decades, breeders have selected the sweetest tasting melons, leading to natural watermelons with a much sweeter taste than those available a couple of generations ago. Plant geneticist Angela Davis decided to engineer the reduced-sugar melon so that the 20 million diabetics would be able to indulge in the fruit as well. The low-sugar version is said to still be a great source of lycopene (antioxidant), vitamin A and potassium.Unfortunately, this ScienceBlog writer makes the horrible mistake of recommending sprinkling artificial sweetener on the watermelon if you still want the sweetness without the calories. Please. Do NOT use artificial sweeteners to re-sweeten this, or any other, low-sugar treat.

What is a personal watermelon? I had never heard of such a thing, but C and I were in the supermarket, and she said, "Look, personal watermelons!" Of course, my knee-jerk response was to ask, "Is that anything like a personal lubricant?". Much to C's embarrassment, this was said in front of a teenage male clerk, but such things don't bother me.So as it turns out, a personal watermelon is a small, seedless watermelon. Who knew? I only knew about the big kind. The cashier thought that it was cute also. In fact, she said, "oh, how cute...it's the perfect size." You know what else was the perfect size? Her breasts. They were. They couldn't have been any bigger than an A cup, and that's just fine. She had pretty eyes, and a friendly smile, and she understood that it's the little things in life that make a difference, like personal watermelons. As such, her perky little boobs just made my day. Had they been any bigger, they would have looked unnatural, and they would have

"Baby Watermelon"8X10Oil on Gessoed BoardAvailableIt's definitely summer! This is one of those cute little watermelons, and a patient one at that. I bought it before the Florida trip and it has kindly waited around without rotting for me to capture it in paint. My Dad, "the ancient one," wanted to eat it, but I told him he couldn't yet, not until I finished my painting. Now it's his. It sits on an ironstone dish which used to be my Mom's and one of the things we brought back from Florida. I have a thing about ironstone, I'm sure because of my mother's collection of antiques and the lessons as I was growing up about appreciating them. Ironstone. You can dress it up or dress it down. It goes with everything. Food looks great on it. It's classic and substantial, doesn't have to be babied like the fine bone china and delicate glassware, so I am glad to have it.Off to go wash my brushes out. Hope you like this one!
Summertime always means there will be plenty of watermelon consumption in our house. We prefer super sweet and crisp melons, but how does one guarantee that the melon you pick from the overflowing bins at your local market will fit your criteria? Here are a few simple tips that I always abide by:
1. Knock or slap several different watermelons while they are still sitting in the bins. Find the one with the hollowest sound and the highest pitch.
2. Make sure the melon is firm and symmetrical, without bruises, cuts or dents.
3. The watermelon should be heavy for its size.
4. The belly or underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened.

Watermelon, commonly known as “pakwan” in Tagalog, is probably native to Africa. It is mainly eaten as dessert fruit. The rind is made into preserves and pickles; the seeds are processed into butong pakwan. In 1982-83, the area planted to watermelon was 15,410 hectares with a total production of 75,650 metric tons of fruits; but [...]
Watermelon has always been a good source of vitamins A and C, and provides potassium and fiber. But now consumers have even more reasons to enjoy a sweet fruit. Scientists indicate that watermelon contains high levels of lycopene-an antioxidant that may help the body fight cancer and prevent disease.
