Last year we had several neighbourhood shops nominated for TW2B award, and the other week I went to visit one, Al Amin in Mill Road to see what it was like. I was immediately struck by the extraordinary range of food on sale, and the friendly welcoming staff who managed to help customers without being 'pushy'. You certainly don't have to be disabled to enjoy shopping at Al Amin, but I could easily see why they were nominated last year by a regular customer whose shopping they carried home free of charge after an operation made things difficult, and at other times she reported "they make a point of putting my shopping in two evenly balanced bags so that I carry it easily".It's this sort of practical help that we want to encourage! I am considering making a winter coat for the first time? I?ve been reading the 33-page thread (phew!) from last year?s winter coat sew-along to gather info but I have some specific questions I?d like to throw out to you.
The coat I am considering is BWOF 10-2007-119. I haven?t measured the flat pattern yet but I imagine it will be semi-fitted. (Well, that is the fit I?m going for).
The fabric that I would use is wool (from my stash), not sure how to describe the weave, but it?s kind of loose (more thick than thin) and certainly needs something extra for warmth.
I?ve been reading up on both Thinsulate and lambswool, and I think I?d prefer to interline with lambswool (given that Thinsulate cannot be ironed or dry-cleaned, and I?d like to have those options available, although more and more I?m moving away from dry cleaning). I found lambswool at www.greenberg-hammer.com; if my local shops don?t have any, I?ll order it from there.
