This morning the girls left their bedroom lights on – the overhead and the bright bright standing light – and their television set, volume UP. I woke up at 7:30am, and rolled out of bed, worried if they had gotten themselves awake and out the door to the bus. I had visions of shaking them all out of bed (because, truthfully, if the oldest boy doesn’t wake, the others won’t wake either, a

The refreshing feeling the procession provides is worth walking for. But when

Central Park: Wandering in The Ramble
After leaving my temporary office in the Shakespeare Garden, I walked up to Belvedere Castle, a "folly" in the world of Victorian gardening, and then through the natural ecosystem known as The Ramble. Without any predetermined path, and that's the only way to walk here, I wandered through this intentionally natural part of the park. Still, several people were squirreled away in The Ramble, mainly birders with binoculars around their necks, and I came across several solitary souls sitting on benches. Many were dressed in pastel sports shirts, so they seemed like Easter eggs.Because the Ramble works in mysterious ways, I wandered over the Azalea Bridge, near the area you see here, and then made my way east. I emerged at the southeast corner of the Ramble at the Loeb Boathouse. Once there, I

I have never pretended to accept this view. At least not for those, like my son, for whom autism presents serious life restrictions and risks. One of those dangerous, even life threatening risks, is the tendency of some autistics to wander off, to get lost ... or worse. In some cases things end well ..... in others they do not. Wandering in The Realms of The Unknown
In the blurred paths of life, he found himself wandering, unable to see where to go, with each step a new thought, conveying dreams that he knows are far away.Hopes getting down, one question that have no answer, recurring, and yet blurring the horizon more, he tells himself: "I had plans, everything was clear, but were they fragile more tan crystal? That at the first throw of a stone, they shattered, and to dust converted, they seemed solid enough, hard, and unbreakable".He continues his walk toward the unknown, not knowing what to seek, nor knowing in which hole he'll fall next, and whether its going to a bless or a curse, would the next step cause him another broken bone, another pint of pain?Unsure, his vision gets more fogged every step, he is walking, bleeding, all bruised and cut, yet invisible to the eyes, the pain mounting, yet tears are dry, long ago he stopped trying to cry, long ago he stopped trying to fight the pain, for a friend and a companion it became, he lost track.

Tradescantia pallida: Purple Heart Or Wandering Jew
Tradescantia pallida is species of spiderwort that is native to eastern Mexico. In warmer climates it is an evergreen perennial plant that can be grown as an ornamental ground cover, in pots or as an ornamental houseplant. This plant has escaped cultivation and in some areas it has become invasive because of the plants' ability to adapt to shade or sun, quick growth and relatively disease free existence. In colder climates, like here in Chicago, the invasive qualities aren't really an issue because it can't survive the winters in our gardens.T. pallida has three common names by which it is know; Purple Heart, Purple Queen and Wandering Jew are monikers that are commonly used to refer to this plant. Sometimes this can be confusing because most people know T. zebrina (the popular houseplant) as Wandering Jew.The genus of plants that this plant belongs to is named after John Tradescant the elder who was a well known English naturalist and gardener. Besides being partly responsible for

      Down that lonely, wandering road
I did something that I haven’t done in a long, long time. I went for a walk. We were out of bread, so I scraped together all of the money that I had in this world (a bunch of change that had been sitting on my computer desk) to go and get some. Then, off I went to the store. From where I live, there is a grocery store only about four blocks away. It was hot, but that’s to be expected on an August day around 11pm. I do suffer from sometimes extreme paranoia in public, especially in heavily populated but wide open spaces, even more so when I am alone. But, I stuffed all of this down because I was absolutely intent on going to get bread for my mother. See? Who needs medication when you have strong mental motivation? I got the bread, which broke my bank at a whopping $1.55. Sadly, when I got home, I realized that I had left without sunscreen. Now my face and my arms have this awful pink tint to them. Once that fades, there will be a hint of brownness to my skin. I rea

How Can I Encourage My Wandering Cat To Return Home?
There are a number of strategies to try. Enter your garden and name call (brightly) at regular intervals - every hour or more often. This is especially important in the early evening and beyond dusk. Do not be disheartened if your cat does not return immediately. You can expand this action to the outer borders of the known territory - streets, gardens, woods and so on. Clink a plate on the doorstep or ground outside at regular intervals - say, every two hours - and leave out a small morsel of strong-smelling food. Do not stand and watch unless from a discreet position as your cat will be able to see you and this may deter its return. If you own a garden shed or bench, you can use this space to entice your cat home. Set a cat carrier or strong cardboard box on its side (keep the flaps) with a worn item of your old clothing inside so that your cat will recognize your scent. Just Wandering Through Life
(Photo: Sunset on Bournemouth Beach, England - 2005)Okay, so it's my turn to get a bit soppy and sentimental now. Whilst searching for and booking my holiday on the internet, a very fond tune came into my mind. The tune was from a film I watched at my late Grandparents house when I was a very young lad (just about knee high to a grasshopper). Each time I hear this song, no matter what I am doing, I have to stop......closing my eyes I can smell the Sunday dinner cooking, I can hear my grandparents voices as if I was there again. Sat on the floor next to my Grandad's armchair with both of us singing along to the film. Such a warm and reassuring feeling, remembering the happy times the whole family had together. It reminds me how fortunate I have been to be born into such a close and caring family. My Grandad died of cancer many years ago, and my Grandmother sadly died in a tragic accident earlier this year. I miss them both dearly.Little did I know then, that this tune would have such a

      Wandering around Romagna
Another day spent far from the relaxing beaches of Cattolica with no regrets. This morning at breakfast we considered the possibility of another day wandering around awesome Romagna’s hinterland and we decided for this option without replies. My wife Eva and I took a pair of hotel bicycles (free service, very nice service) and we headed to Rimini and its hinterland. We carried with us some travel equipment consisting in a backpack full of food and drinks, a map, a compass, some first aid stuff like bends and generic medicinals, a travel local guide and binoculars. Cycling lovers can follow a pleasant ring route (55 kilometres, 4 hours by bike) by taking the road that goes out in the direction of San Marino and Santa Maria in Cerreto, where you can follow an unsurfaced road for about 500 metres outside the town center (the crossoroads on the right). Yesterday I sewed this cover for my sewing machine and embroidery module. It's denim, fused to fusible fleece, so it's pretty thick. I had a problem with the front corner, where the embroidery module meets the machine. See the wrinkle? When I hold the cover out flat, it goes aways (I didn't sew a pucker in) but the bulk makes it wrinkle when on the machine. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I have clipped the corners.
