WALL STREET JOURNAL ALIGNED WITH A NEWT ONE
Bush's Drill Bit Wall Street Journal Even some of Washington's fiercest opponents of oil drilling are thinking anew, and the politics of domestic energy production seem to be shifting. This isn't surprising with gas prices as a top-tier campaign issue. More confounding was President Bush's timidity yesterday as he tried to prod Congress into movement. Mr. Bush argued that leaving most of Am

Fannie Mae Refinancing Plan Aims to Head Off Foreclosures - Wall Street Journal
By JAMES R. HAGERTYMay 10, 2008; Page A2Fannie Mae is preparing to introduce by midyear a program of refinancing mortgages for people who owe more than the current value of their homes, a situation known as being "underwater."The plan is the latest twist in efforts to contain the surge in foreclosures on homes in much of the U.S. It differs from a bill approved by the House on Thursday that would authorize the Federal Housing Administration to insure loans for distressed borrowers only after the lender has written down the principal -- something many lenders are reluctant to do. Fannie's refinance plan would result in new loans of equivalent size, leaving the borrower underwater but giving him or her a lower monthly payment or at least a fixed rate.

In exchange, the Federal Housing Administration would pay off the current loan and issue the borrower a new FHA-backed mortgage. Struggling homeowners would get lower monthly payments to increase chances they could avoid foreclosure.

The groundswell reflects both changing demographics and a new activism among mothers. It also shows that even now, 30 years after passage of the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act, there is still confusion about what protections it provides. "I thought we were protected," said an advertising executive during a recent gathering of 100 working mothers. "Then I find out we can be fired while we're pregnant, employers can refuse to hire us -- what exactly are our rights?" While

It's one thing when the real estate agent who sends you those calendars each year tells you that it's a good time to buy. It's another when the Wall Street Journal's Real Estate Journal section echoes that same sentiment. Still, such an endorsement comes with its own set of caveats:For years rapidly rising prices kept many first-time home buyers out of the housing market. But as home values slide further downward and interest rates hover at relatively low levels, it may be time to start looking to buy that first house. That is, if you have a secure job, can afford higher down payments than were required a few years ago and can meet lenders' much stricter income and credit requirements...The U.S. median home price was $201,000 in January, down 4.6% from January 2007. Wall Street Journal Joins Coverage of Paul Supporters
At the beginning of the week I had a post on how coverage of the behavior of Paul’s supporters was increasing, quoting from an article from Congressional Quarterly. The Wall Street Journal is reporting on this problem today: Some blogs have booted Paul supporters for leaving incendiary comments. They have also been frozen out of Internet surveys and accused of electronic ballot stuffing; Dr. Paul rarely loses online straw polls even though he barely registers in national telephone polls. His supporters argue that they win online polls because there are more Paul supporters and they’re better organized. Many of Dr. Paul’s supporters say they’re simply fighting a media and political establishment that won’t give him a fair shake. I occasionally share these articles on my blog when I find one with an Australian context. Well, the good news now is that the Australian newspaper will be having a Wall Street Journal page in its business section from today. News Corp recently bought Dow Jones, which owns the Wall Street Journal. As News Corp also owns the Australian, it is able to leverage the content amongst these 2 publications. I think the Australian has a better on-line and print business section than the other leading broadsheet in Australia - The Sydney Morning Herald. Forbes Magazine announces the sale of Wall Street Journal. Will this affect subscription services?
OK. so here’s some really cool news in the world of magazine subscriptions. Forbes has just confirmed that the Wall Street Journal is going to be sold to Rupert Murdochs News Corp. for $60 a share. The deal is valued at $5.6 billion, which includes the assumption of debt. The Bancroft family (which owns about 37% of the companys voting shares) has agreed to a sale of the 125-year-old parent of The Wall Street Journal. Now we’ve been selling subscriptions to Wall Street Journal mostly to public and school libraries as well as businesses and companies for years. I wonder if our business model will be impacted by this turn of events. I expect that this deal shuold go through because their 37% combined with the voting stock held by public shareholders should give enough support for the planned sale to clear a full shareholder vote. News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people ) and Dow Jones (nyse: DJ - news - people ) has also confirmed that they signed a definitive merger agreement.
