Walking the block of Orchard St. south of E. Houston early this afternoon, I started experiencing not so much the anticipation of discovery as the anxiety of place. The buildings that I thought were along in here were no longer here, and in their stead were some new buildings and construction sites of buildings yet to come. I'm having a hard time remembering what the old places looked like, and I
A few days ago I got this email from an acquaintance: This weekend I will be participating in the National MS Walk i. I’ve been in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis for the past four years. I am...
I'm at Sugar Café at the corner of Allen St. and E. Houston St., a 24-hour cafe that's been open a little more than a year. A long narrow joint that best accommodates parties of one or two, the west wall consists of retractable glass doors that open up in season and the interior walls are painted bright white. The scrambled eggs, toast, and potatoes cost $3, and the coffee is strong enough.I plan

Time for the roundup of global walking news. I like to report the best of the world's walking stories as a transition between walks. Last week I walked around Central Park, enjoying the flora and fauna and the park's free Wifi. I also walked 28.7 miles, according to my pedometer, but subtracting dog walks and going to the grocery store, I may have only walked 10 miles inside the park. It's raining
Walking Street is the main hub of the nightlife scene in Pattaya and is probably the most exciting street in the world if you like to have fun. Here you will find all kinds of entertainment, from beer bars to cool indoor air-con bars like V2o, discos, Agogo-bars, cabaret shows, street entertainers, market stalls and much [...]
Walking Street is a famous and vibrant part of the city located in south of Pattaya. It is a location that is well-known to many tourists visiting Thailand , and especially to the male visitors. I have to tell you, I’ve written, re-written and then re-re-written this post a dozen times. Why is it such a big deal to get it right?
I’ve gotten a lot of emails, Facebook messages, Myspace messages all asking where I’ve been these past month. Am I done writing these stupid little stories about my day?

• Recommended Places to Go Online in Central Park: The following hot spots, courtesy of the Park Wifi, are excellent choices for working online while enjoying Nature, as noted in earlier posts:1. under the wisteria next to the Rumsey Playfield, near the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain.2. the Delacorte Theater, near the Shakespeare Garden and Belvedere Castle.3. the Harlem Meer, near the Dana Discovery Center.• Recommended Place for Casual Dining in Central Park: The Boathouse. Coming off a walk in the Ramble, I was glad to come upon the Boathouse and hang out at the outdoor bar for a glass of wine. The food choices are varied, and the place has that casual elegant vibe. Now high on my list for out-of-town guests.• Recommended Place to Stroll on One Day: from the Pond at the southeast c

Sometimes Casey Dienel sounds like CocoRosie and sometimes like Regina Spektor, as far as vocals go. So keep those vox in mind and then add a very interesting combination of a indie pop piano (sometimes jazzy) and organ with some electronics, and flunctuation of sounds throughout songs. I just found out about her then also found out she's no more solo, only White Hinterland! Luckily she takes a comanding role in this new band. They are currently touring to support their debut full length album Phylactery Factory which dropped in early March. We got some of the tracks and also some Casey Dienel solo songs for you to enjoy! This would be the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir between 86th and 96th in Central Park, and I just walked around it. Several people were out walking around this large body of water, but most were running for some reason. Many runners passing me were outfitted with heart monitors, expensive running shoes, and portable MP3 players, and I felt kind of out of it, as I was wearing a prom dress and carrying a MacBook. Just kidding about the prom dress.I like walking, but I find strolling around the reservoir 90% tedious. Several times I ventured down to the nearby bridle path and walked sections along in there. It's more leafy. Over on the east side of the park, I thought about ditching the whole effort and going to one of the museums that line the park on the east, maybe the Cooper-Hewitt
And all the world is flying by . . . Why don't I care much about the presidential election? I went for a walk this evening. Myself and my daughters took the dog for a walk down 575 South. At first, it was horrible. The little border collie mutt is a rambunctious lunatic when he sees another dog. There are other dogs all up and down our little county road. He has so much energy, I think I will need to buy him a tread mill or a couple of acres to run on (whichever, neither could I afford within the next five years - by then he'll be old enough not to care). On the way back to the house, we ran into a neighbor. We introduced ourselves. He was a skinny boy - 25 years old, although I would've guessed nineteen. He was walking his little female dog (had her collar tied to a rope) and
Do you feel better when you are walking? It actually relieves stress and helps you unwind. It is healthy at no-cost activity and it can help us stay healthy as well. Since it is my Health & Wealth theme today, I’m sharing a few tidbits why walking is beneficial to us.

AP - Sure, things look rough for Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. now that they couldn't agree on a deal. Yahoo's stock has cratered, and Microsoft has to figure out another way to catch up in the online ad market, a flaw so big it was willing to pay $47.5 billion to fix it.
There are a million and one clichés to describe the sweep of the Satan Fish (oh, I’m sorry, they are the “Rays of Sunshine” now–could that possibly ANY lamer? Love the heels but can’t bare the pain? In the latest issue of Marie Claire, Sergio Rossi’s creative director Edmundo Castillo offers shoe advice for walking comfortably in high heels.

Just last October the Honda of Japan is developing a novel walking assistance device, but the details of its functionality were hazy. Finally the company is revealing more and taking the device on the road. Apparently Honda has managed to translate some of their research from the super-awesome, ASIMO into a "walking assistant device" for the gait-impaired, but still somewhat capable of walking on their own. We'll let Honda PR describe how it works...The cooperative control technology utilized for this device is a unique Honda innovation achieved through the cumulative study of human walking just as the research and development of technologies was conducted for Honda's advanced humanoid robot, ASIMO. Applying cooperative control based on the information obtained from hip angle sensors, the
After two weeks in darkened movie theaters, I'm anxious to spend time out of doors. So, for the coming week, I'm transferring the WOTBA operation to Central Park. I'll look for good places to "work," testing out the WiFi access, snapping images of the park in spring, walking the Mall, the reservoir, Belvedere Castle, and the Bethesda Fountain, and so forth, and discovering new places. The weather looks good this week, and I figure there's plenty to do.My plan is to take the subway to the edges of the park each day and then start walking and exploring. I want to try some new things, such as recording ambient sounds, making a few moving images, sketching again, revisiting sights I photographed in winter, and befriending zoo animals. With over 240 movies featuring the park, the park is either

Did you know that one of the biggest problems for dog owners is leash walking? Every week I get a call from someone complaining about the way their dog pulls. It can actually be dangerous for you to walk your dog if he is a really bad puller. I've seen people dragged down and hurt by how hard their dog pulls.I'm going to share with you here some valuable tips on leash walking. Here they are:Tip #1: Never try to walk a dog that has been cooped up all day.If your dog has been lying around waiting for you, let him burn off some of his energy before you take him for a walk. Throw a ball, play tug-o-war, or do something to calm him down before the walk.Tip #2: Use a gentle leader. One of the best collars on the market is the gentle leader head collar. It works by controlling your dog's head. When

The day after we arrived in Valencia, we went straight to the old city for a stroll. The city has conveniently marked important places of interest in the maps they give out such as churches and other religious structures (there were just so many of them that I felt sad we lost our own Intramuros during WWII), government and other civic structures, museums and parks. We took the Metro to the Colon station in Valencia viejo. And from there, made our way around the old district. This is a wonderful collection of built heritage from various periods since the city was founded in 157 B.C. Our first stop was the Ayuntamiento de Valencia (city hall) and the grand plaza in front of it.While walking, we passed by the Iglesia de San Martin where Mass was being said. So we stayed. A few meters down the

I saw several movies at the Tribeca Film Festival this week, and most every day, I walked from my apartment in the Village up Broadway and then east on E. 12th or E. 13th (by mistake, overshooting where I needed to turn) to the screenings at the Village East Cinema at E. 12th and 2nd Av. Then I would walk back west and north to a reception or an event near Union Square. I took this route, I think, ten times, and the images here don't even account for the stretch walking home. These photos seem pedestrian to me, on many levels, but in their totality they represent the "shoe leather" transitions between the dramatic sequences in my own personal New York movie. What I think about most when I look at these walking pictures is how I use the occasion of walking to process what I've just experienc
When buying women's walking shoes, we have to keep a few things in mind. One is cute walking shoes always give us a nice little lift and the other is, the womens walking shoes we often choose are snug to out feet which is not always the best thing we could do for yourselves.
Good news! There are several types of womens walking shoes that look cute and do not have to fit quite so snug. There are several really cute womens walking shoes manufactured by many very well known and respectable sport...

I'd like to make some general observations about my experience covering the Tribeca Film Festival.• Already I am tired and behind on my schedule. Every morning I sit down with the list of movie screenings and scratch through the names of movies I didn't get around to seeing the day before.• I have met a ton of nice people, most of them filmmakers and bloggers. Though I tried to stop meeting people a few days ago, I keep returning to the Target-Tribeca Filmmaker Lounge where I end up meeting more people and promising to see their films.• When I make appointments with filmmakers to talk about their films, I pretty much have to go see the films before we actually talk. I don't want to have to start the conversation with "And what's it about?," followed by me saying, "And then what happe
Over the weekend we had our Master Gardeners Sale at the U of F ext. office. This is hands down the best show of the year. The only thing is you have to be 1hr early and wait if you want to get anything. They open the gates and it is a mad dash to the back were they keep the plants. The prices are unbelievably cheap. I will be posting some of many finds this week. This is the first. It is a Neomarica longifolia , Yellow Walking Iris or Apostle plant are some of the common names I have heard. This guy was $3. I just said I promised myself not to turn this into a dogblog, but material just keeps presenting itself...begging (like a dog) to be shared.I wrote earlier that walking my dog is like trucking around with a bucket of sunshine. A side effect of this sunshine is that I now talk to random strangers on the street.A lot. Most of the time, the chit-chat is limited to details on the dog's breed, age, etc. etc. etc. with an occasional flirty line or two thrown in for good measure.Sometimes though, what is said to me throws me for a loop...mostly because when I'm walking the dog, I'm fixated on his piss, poop, and whether or not he's trying to eat a used condom off the sidewalk.Once, while I was pulling Bobo away from an open trash bag on the street, a guy lurched at me and grunted:"Yeah yeah....s
Walking is the best low impact exercise we can do... most of us walk from here to there everyday so if you are someone who will use you car to drive to the post box at the end of your road or quite simply to lazy to walk then listen closely!Walking is a motion that is a natural movement it is innate to us all. It can also improve your health and keep you in great shape! If you walk on a regular basis you will find that: 1. Walking reduces stress... and stress can create an unhealthy platform for your body. In general exercise is great at reducing stress, especially when outdoors in the fresh air, a walk home from work will do wonders for your mind as well as your body! 2. It encourages weight lose and helps to maintain your bodies weight. Walking burns calories and is great for toning up b

I love walking - not serious yomping, but leisurely strolls with frequent stops to admire the view and diversions from the path to look at flowers and pick mushrooms. The Czech Republic is a brilliant country for walkers and the area around Cesky Krumlov and in the Sumava National Park is particularly good. The main footpaths are well waymarked - with signposts in the towns and colour-coded signs painted on trees and gates along the paths themselves. These signs consist of a coloured bar against a white background. These colours for the walks are reflected on the walking maps you can buy in the tourist information shops and bookshops for about £3. It is therefore very easy to find your way.I have already talked about one of my favourite spring time walks in this blog. But I have many other

The first news item is from Walking Off the Big Apple.• Blogger Walks 15,246 Steps on First Day of Tribeca Film FestivalWhile walking from my apartment and back to attend two film screenings and one reception on the first day of the Tribeca Film Festival yesterday, I walked 6.73 miles, 15,246 steps, and burned 461 calories, according to my Omron pedometer. The most successful workout plan for you is the one that you can imagine yourself doing day after day. It’s true: consistency is key. And sometimes, a rigorous exercise plan seems like a good idea at first, but it’s hard to keep up with it over weeks or months. When we get burned out or [...]
This week I'll be thinking and writing a lot about film, and as previously mentioned on this site, please visit Reframe and learn about that what exciting things they are up to. On Walking Off the Big Apple, I'm hoping to share what I learn as a pedestrian walking by the venues as well as to keep you informed of some fun public events.E. 13th Street is still find of funky/pretty Village in spirit, even when near to Fifth Ave. Today, I walked from the Tribeca hub-hub filmmaker and press offices to see a screening at the Village East Cinemas and then back again. The opulent theater at the corner of 2nd Ave. at 12th St. opened in 1926, in the heyday of Jewish Rialto District, and it still maintains a lot of its early aura. The last time I was in the theatre was to see Brand On the Brain, a mi

This is something we never thought we'd see. But. Here it is. A headlight for your walking-stick. Just switch on and head out into the night. The LED light can be rotated 360° and the clasp should fit most canes. The light can even be set to flash, which might be would be a good thing if grandpa should happen to stray into the street. I'm getting ready for the Tribeca Film Festival today, organizing a daily schedule of film screenings, roundtables, and press events. I am one of 2,000 accredited press people, by the way. As I mentioned, I'm writing a second blog about film matters for Reframe, a website of the Tribeca Film Institute. This morning, after filing a post on the Visual Artist as Documentary Subject, I walked up Fifth Avenue to check out the Target-Tribeca Filmmakers Lounge, a meeting place for badge holders. I found a dazzling room of contemporary furniture and lighting, buzzing with pre-festival action and bathed in Target's emblematic reds and target shapes. It takes a lot to organize such as festival. Then I thought, "How about if I started a modest online festival, one perhaps built around a NY theme that
I’ve been reading many articles talking about those that are currently “walking away” from their homes. Below, please find a freshly updated list of all the themed New York walks I've compiled over the last year. All are Manhattan walks, with many in the lower part of the island. I'm not Manhattan-centric; it's just where I live.I promise to get out to other boroughs in the coming year. I often visit Brooklyn just because I like walking over the bridge, and I hope to be visiting the Bronx Bombers sometime soon to wave goodbye to Yankee Stadium.A met a sprightly 85-year old man the other day who said he walks all day long, and as part of his rotating itinerary, he regularly hops on the ferry to walk around Staten Island. I want to do that, too. Also, now that the weather is so nice, I want to visit the Queens Botanical Garden, with its new state-of-the-art visitor's center.• Ashcan Artists

I must begin by saying that Forbidden Kingdom’s success depresses me. Especially because when I first heard of the movie, there was a part of me that wanted to go see it.A friend is moving to Prince Edward Island Canada, where there are two lobsters and two oysters seasons a year. I agreed to booksit while she leaves the good ol’ New York City to go on a year of cold, writing, home-wrecking spree. Among the books she's leaving behind, she specifically pointed one out to me, saying I would enjoy it. The book’s name is Midnight Blue. It’s thick, especially for a paperback. However, neither the New Yorker nor my next next library book arrived yet, and if I don’t have something to read on the bus in the morning, I go stir crazy. So, you know, whatever, let’s see what this book is a

By: Megan HazelQuite often, most women and some men believe that comfortable shoes are not synonymous with fashion. Mephisto Shoes can prove them wrong. With almost 200 styles in their line, a shopper will actually find it difficult to choose the one they like the most! That is because Mephisto spends as much time on the look of the shoe as on the ergonomic design of it.There are models that boast open toes, open heels, flirty straps and bright colors. Mephisto does not sacrifice appearance for comfort's sake, or comfort for appearance's sake. They know that today's savvy consumer demands both. It's clear the idea that a comfortable walking shoe must be black, box shaped and boasts no ornamentation is passé. No longer do casual shoes need to be the athletic and tennis shoes of the 80's or

With the passing of the 400th post on Walking Off the Big Apple, I thought it an appropriate time to pass along the history of the site and some recent updates.History: In late May of 2007, after a day at Yankee Stadium eating hotdogs and drinking beer, I woke up, weighed myself, and screamed. I decided to walk out the door and keep walking, and then walk some more until I looked and felt better. I brought along a journal to record my daily walks and to sketch places and things (example here). I started eating real food. By mid-July I had lost 17.5 pounds. My notebook, filled with sketches and commentary, looked good enough to put on the World Wide Web.In July of 2007 I launched Walking Off the Big Apple as a website to share my walks and experiences in New York. I'm a lazy human being, I admit it. But I still manage to walk more than anyone I know (except maybe my mom, she's pretty much superwoman, exercise edition). Because I'm lazy, I'm not going to rewrite the original version of this post - which was supposed to be on fashionable rain boots - which Blogger seems to have gobbled up without leaving a single crumb behind. Anyhow.I have a personal belief that walking is its own form of activism. Only the poor, crazy and disabled seem to do it anymore, crazy including "activists" like myself. Walking makes streets safer because it puts more eyes on the street, it obviously reduces pollution (every time you walk you're doing your fellow (wo)man a favour, not to mention all the other flora and fauna by reducing emissions) and the more people do it, t

What a peaceful way to spend a lazy afternoon! Walking a long a tree-shaded lane with nary a care at that moment. Walking is good for you. It need not be brisk to make it aerobic; just walk at a leisurely pace. Clear your thoughts. Breathe in good ideas, exhale the bad ones.See my humongous bag? But you know, for me this is not a question of being a woman or a man, of being old or young. It's a question of being convinced of what you do and being tough defending it. It's not easy, but nobody is going to defend it for you. This is a job of the utmost responsibility that implies you must have enough experience to cope with it, without doubting or feeling sorry for what you are. But now we have seen a compelling reason to break that silence and that reason is the hope for the LGBT community that we have seen inspired during of the campaign of Barack Obama for President of the United States of America. We see Hillary Clinton as someone who has been a leaf in the wind of popular opinion most of her political life, espe
A robot from Cornell University has set a new distance record for a walking robot. The three-legged Cornell Ranger travelled a little over 9 km (5.6 miles) around the Barton Hall running track. This was their second attempt to break the existing record, their previous attempt travelling a little over 1 km (0.62 miles). The robot's gait took inspiration from humans, using the powered ankles to provide push off and a combination of momentum and gravity to move the legs. This made the robot extremely power efficient, helping it go the distance.source
