I had the opportunity this weekend to take in the first run of the Toronto production of Tom Waits' The Black Rider. The rock opera, written by Waits along with Robert Wilson and William S. Burroughs, is the story of a young city clerk, Wilhelm, who makes a Faustian deal with the devil to win the hand of a young woman.The story is not uncommon, but the music is what makes the staging special.

The tour begins at the tail of the Hydra, in Phoenix, continuing up the snake’s body and ending on one of its multiple heads in Atlanta. And to ensure that his new Hydra-tour is received with a maximum amount of puzzlement, he announced very correctly that the first initials of the cities on the tour, listed in Hydra order, spell out the acronym “PEHDTSCKJMBA.”

"13 Going on 30" is an underrated movie. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo were wonderfully delightful in this gem. She plays the 13-year old girl who becomes 30 overnight which is a silly over-done premise but the way they tell the story and the performances truly make this a joy to watch. What could've been awful becomes a funny and even touching story thanks to moments like this scene where Jennifer realizes that she doesn't want to be a grown up anymore and wants to be a kid again. Don't we all feel that way sometimes? The song they selected for this sequence was absolutely perfect and makes it a memorable scene. I like when she goes to the house she grew up in and sees her old room. So emotional, especially when she sees her parents. Billy Joel's "Vienna" says it all!

FORMER England batsman Graham Thorpe has been named as New Ssouth Wales assistant coach for next summer.
Thorpe, who averaged 44.66 in 100 Tests, will also coach the NSW second XI.
"I'm delighted to announce Graham's appointment," said Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert this morning.
"To have a player of Graham's international experience working with our squad, particularly our young talented players, will be tremendous.
"Graham has been involved with the Blues as a specialist batting coach for the last two seasons and has worked extremely well with the squad."
Thorpe, 37, said the appointment represents the "next chapter in my cricket career".
"I've enjoyed working with the squad over the past two seasons and can't wait to start my new role when I return to Australia next month," he said in a statement.

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) was expected to announce if he would run for the Presidency today...he's announced he's waiting a little while longer.Hagel would be the only major anti-war Republican in the running (sans a run by Congressman Ron Paul of Texas.)Meanwhile, Hagel is raising money for a reelection campaign for the Senate. Not that he'd need it. He won 85% of the vote last night and unless he faces a pro-war Republican in the primary (which probably would've happened already,) he's pretty much a shoo-in.
The band Tower of London were involved in a brawl outside Mayfair's posh Mahiki bar after an incident kicked off over a hat belonging to Donny's brother Dirk. However, Donny chose to wait in the safety of his car while fellow band mates The Rev and Tommy Brunette charged in and watched the event from the back seat.
A witness said some guy flipped Dirk's hat off as the band was leaving and all hell broke loose. Fellow Mahiki guests Prince William and Madonna were spared witnessing the violent behaviour.

Part of Intel's earnings reports was the news that its price war with AMD seemed to be over.
The problem with the statement is that Intel also said it was gaining back share from AMD, especially in the high end server markets where AMD had made considerable in-roads.
But, what if someone forgot to tell AMD.
AMD has gained share from Intel, especially in the server market In August, AMD even said that it would eventually have 40% of the market for server chips. It has just north of 20% now.
And, Intel's new Core 2 Duo has been well reviewed and may be beginning to beat back the advances made by AMD.
AMD may not have a lot of options to keep its market share growing. It is much smaller than Intel and if it does not protect its gains, Intel's new chipset may set AMD's growth back several years.
The market has become skeptical about whether AMD's gains are permanent. Its shares have dropped nearly 20% over the last six months while Intel's are up about 10%.
