We were all jumping for joy when Silverlight 2 beta 1 was released and the ability to connect to services was more readily/easily available to us. For discoverable services that provided a WSDL we were quickly able to implement them using the Add Service Reference capability in Visual Studio 2008. Beta 2 brings a few changes to the world of services that you should know about.

ASP.NET is a unified Web development platform that provides advanced services for building Web applications and Web services. ASP.NET provides a new programming model and infrastructure that enables you to create powerful Web applications with unprecedented speed, flexibility, and ease. ASP.NET is fully supported by the .NET Framework, enabling you to take full advantage of the CLR, type safety, inheritance, and all the other features of that platform.Unlike Active Server Pages (ASP), ASP.NET is a compiled, .NET-based platform. ASP.NET applications can be built using any .NET-compatible programming language. Also, because ASP.NET is built on top of the .NET Framework, your ASP.NET applications have access to the entire range of functionality provided by the framework. Among the major advan
Although it is possible to build or consume Web services on a platform with support for only the core technologies (XML, TCP/IP, HTTP, and SOAP), it is certainly not a task suited for the beginning programmer or the easily intimidated. The power of the infrastructure on which the Microsoft Web Services implementation is built is embodied in the basic design principal that Web services should be simple to create and easy to consume. Rather than waste your time writing Web service infrastructure code, you should be able to focus your time and energy on the actual functionality of your application and let the platform do the rest. The technologies and tools provided in the Microsoft .NET Framework do just that. These technologies give you an excellent, easy-to-use platform for building and cons

Web Services solve a basic, but pervasive problem experienced by many of us with today's Internet. Although literally billions of pages of useful data and information are served up by the Web, it is typically difficult to extract, examine, and use that data programmatically.Much of this difficulty arises from the fact that the Web (at least as it exists today) is designed for human consumption. Consequently, data is presented in a form that's easy for a human to read but relatively difficult and error prone for applications to read and process reliably.Web services are all about delivering distributed applications via programmable components that are accessible over the Web. As an example, many e-commerce sites need to calculate shipping charges based on a variety of shipping options. Typi

WSO2 is releasing Monday its open source WSO2 Web Services Framework for Spring 1.0 (WSF/Spring1.0), providing users of the Spring Java framework with an Apache Axis2/Java Web services engine for use in developing applications. Users get access to the Axis2 library, said Paul Fremantle, WSO2 CTO. "It basically puts the configuration and setup of that library all in a Spring framework," he said.
The following documentation describes how you can use the SOAP adapter to connect a remote client or Web services provider to the Integration Server. The remote client or Web services provider can perform the task of either a sender or receiver, or both. Use Some remote clients or Web services providers are only able to communicate by means of SOAP messages. You use the SOAP adapter to connect such systems to the Integration Server directly. The SOAP adapter provides a runtime environment that includes various SOAP components for the processing of SOAP messages. It uses a helper class to instantiate and control these SOAP components. For more information about the SOAP adapter, see: SOAP Adapter. Description A remote client or Web services provider is connected to the Integration Serv

Your web service needs connections, in every sense of the word. When you need people, you go to where people the people gather. These days, those places are social network services, and if you ignore them, you’re ignoring both your current customers and your potential customers. You need to know how best to leverage social network services(SNSs) to benefit your current users, and thus, gain new ones. I’d like to help.
A Company’s Place in Social Networking
The first and most important thing to remember is that while you have a place on a social network, your company does not. SNSs are not made for companies, they’re made for people. Your goal as a company is to give people tools that they can use or talk about with other people. Ideally, as discussed later, you’ll be taking part of those conversations, but not through a branded character or fake persona, and certainly not through a faceless corporate profile. You wouldn’t send a mascot out in the

Competitive advantage will come from harnessing the power of VoIP and SOA to evolve existing applications into rich Enterprise 2.0 Web services that enhance collaboration, employee productivity and the customer experience. This session will show how AJAX developers can use WSDLs to embed granular telephony functionality into their business applications, processes, Web services, and wikis – independent of the existing telephony infrastructure and without CTI expertise. Attendees will see basic programming techniques, gain insight into best practices from businesses with full-scale implementations, and learn how developers have been able to create working prototypes within hours to speed management approval. Speaker Bio: LignUp’s founder, president and COO, brings 10+ years VoIP experience. Title: SOA Using Java(TM) Web ServicesAuthor: Mark D. HansenPublisher: Prentice Hall PTRISBN: 0130449687Pub-Date: 2007-05-09 Book DescriptionExpert Solutions and State-of-the-Art Code Examples SOA Using Java™ Web Services is a hands-on guide to implementing Web services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) with today’s Java EE 5 and Java SE 6 platforms. Author Mark Hansen presents in explicit detail the information that enterprise developers and architects need to succeed, from best-practice design techniques to state-of-the-art code samples. Hansen covers creating, deploying, and invoking Web services that can be composed into loosely coupled SOA applications. He begins by reviewing the “big picture,” including the challenges of Java-based SOA development and the limitations of traditional approaches. Next, he systematically introduces the latest Java Web Services (JWS) APIs and walks through creating Web services that integrate into a comprehensive SOA solution. Final
What is Spring Web Services? Spring Web Services is a product of the Spring community focused on creating document-driven Web services. Spring Web Services aims to facilitate contract-first SOAP service development, allowing for the creation of flexible web services using one of the many ways to manipulate XML payloads. Key Features Makes the Best Practice an Easy Practice: Spring Web Services makes enforcing best practices easier. This includes practices such as the WS-I basic profile, Contract-First development, and having a loose coupling between contract and implementation. Powerful mappings: You can distribute incoming XML request to any object, depending on message payload, SOAP Action header, or an XPath expression. XML API support: Incoming XML messages can be handled in standard JAXP APIs such as DOM, SAX, and StAX, but al

Free Calls: iWorm - iPhone Advanced Safari browser and being heavily based on web services in general iPhone may soon meet iWorm. A group of security researchers at Independent Security Evaluators have discovered a vulnerability in Apple's iPhone. Not surprisingly, it is the smartphone's advanced Safari browser that is the weak link. The team has created a proof-of-concept exploit capable of delivering files from a user's iPhone to a remote attacker. The exploit is delivered via a malicious web page opened in the Safari browser on the iPhone, pretty much the same way most computers are compromised today. Hence, the vulnerability is also present in both the Mac and Windows versions of Safari, though it may or may not be exploitable there. When the iPhone's version of Safari opens the malicious web page, arbitrary code embedded in the exploit is run with administrative privileges. In the proof-of-concept, this code reads the log of SMS messages, the address book, the call history and
Somebody has written a web service using JBoss. I'm trying to call it from .NET 1.1 or, heaven forbid, the MS SOAP toolkit. And neither of them can call any operations that have parameters, which kind of restricts what we can do with it. I guess one solution might be to have methods called method1(), method2(), method3() etc all the way up to MAXINT. Doesn't seem a great idea. Or perhaps an ASP.NET 2 web service could call the JBoss web service and expose the functionality as another web service? Yeh it's daft, but it might just work. So could it be the folks telling us web services were the panacea for all our interoperability problems were actually just snake oil salesmen? Surely not...
