Elitists Prefer Slave Labor and Cheap Votes Over Homeland Security
George W. This will undoubtedly happen in the post mortems but the evidence already points to a real effect, particularly in generating momentum. As I noted earlier, Obama's online edge obviously hasn't pushed him over the top but traditional negative campaigning has been se

Along with birth rates and related issues like gay marriage and acquiescence to foreign and domestic bad guys, I consider, almost by definition, a country that votes for socialism to be in decline. When a country wants to grow and compete, it values fruitful families, encourages excellence in business (allowing people to keep the fruits of their genius is the most accepted way), and defends itself (or expands). A socialist country is more concerned with sharing what it has, not getting more of whatever that is and lessening risk, not promoting daring. Compete and grow- or die, slowly. Oddities: 1. Alberta Votes
It's election day here and I'll be posting the results (in a separate thread) as they come in this evening. I haven't made it out to vote yet. Just got home from the dentist's office (where she did a fabulous job!) and I'm waiting for the freezing to wear off. (If you need a referral to a good dentist in north Calgary, let me know by e-mail.)Anyway, polls say there are ~45% undecided voters here and many Cons are not all that impressed by Fast Eddie Stelmach, so this could be interesting. Disgruntled Cons will likely just stay home instead of switching parties and our turnout is so low to begin with that there could be a shift in Alberta's political scene as a result. It may not be enough to take the majority from the Conservatives, but any gains made by the left-leaning parties is a net

Democrats Battle for Votes -- Who wins the war?
From time to time, its repeated, "Winning America is blood sport, but the idealist I am , I usually shrug that off, believing there's always a better way. Now on that premise ..... taking the high road, I am obviously dead wrong.Because as I look at the fight and animus demonstrated between the Democratic contenders, Senators Clinton and Obama, I see lines drawn in the sand and 'generals' preparing to battle for votes. How did this intra- party war emerge and eventually who will win? Given Senator Obama has been riding high with successes in 26 states, with 1,042 delegates and Senator Clinton trailing behind with successes in 11 states and 1, 042 delegates, it is clear that the winner is being challenged. And unfortunately one team is pulling out all the stops to get to the finishing line.

Clinton - Obama Senate Votes Comparison
Using the Washington Post Congress Votes Database, I compiled a list of votes that Senators Clinton and Obama disagreed on since January of 2005 when they have both been in the Senate. Also included, is a second sheet containing all votes where both Senators Clinton and Obama voted, with Senator McCain's vote included and information on whether Senator McCain voted along with the Republican Party consensus. Here is a link to the Google spreadsheet.I wasn't able to find any broad trends in the votes where Senators Clinton and Obama disagreed. Out of over 900 total votes, they only disagreed on 52. Out of those, Senator Clinton voted against the Democratic party consensus 30 times, compared to 21 times for Senator Obama. Both Senators appeared to agree with Senator McCain at the same rat

The "Votes For Willy's Book Title!!" Offensive
Well...... I survived my weekend of offending (boy was it fun, hooyah!) and now it is Monday and every muscle aches but here I am because it is time to announce the 3 top entries for the "What Was Willy Reading" contest!!Yay!!Now then, before I announce the finalists and open the polls, I wanted to dedicate this post to my two favorite non-sex toys. Which one do you think is my very, very, very most favorite of the two?Ha! It is a trick question, the answer is: neither one! They are BOTH my favorite! That's right, both of them have nice smiles, at least 3 hairs (which are always styled so very fashionably), they both love to hike, have great British accents and know a ton of great foreign curse words, are good sports, and they both annoy and piss more people off at blogcatalog.com than I do

McCain Votes Against Ban On Waterboarding
While waterboarding is not torture, and I agree with his vote ... he has some explaining to do. Especially because of this exchange on waterboarding at the YouTube debate. This appears to be a way for McCain to try to show the conservative base that he will listen to them, and is a true conservative. In other words, he's trying to shore up support so we don't stay home on his ass.Think Progress:Mr. McCain, a former prisoner of war, has consistently voiced opposition to waterboarding and other methods that critics say is a form torture. But the Republicans, confident of a White House veto, did not mount the challenge. Mr. McCain voted “no” on Wednesday afternoon. He voted no on the Intelligence Authorization Bill which contained a provision from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) that bans wa

      Votes of Conscience
Someone asked me this morning if I would vote for Hilary Clinton if she received the democratic nomination for president. I had to think about this for a few moments, as my feelings are clouded by my past decisions somewhat. I voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. I do not apologize for so doing because he was right – there really was not that much difference between the two parties that year. Nor do I believe that my vote for Gore would have delivered him the White House – several thousand of those who did vote for Gore were told that their votes did not matter. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20. If I had it to do over again… I don’t know what I would do. I voted for Nader out of a sense of defiant idealism – he s

The decision for the Democratic Party still remains open for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, with the votes increasing little by little. Even though Obama won more states approvals overall, Clinton is still in the lead because she’s won more votes in each state because of the popularity, including two big states; New York and California. Barack Obama is likely to win the states Illinois, his home-state, Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, and Utah. New Jersey Senate Votes to Abolish the Death Penalty
The New York Times has, "New Jersey Nears Repeal of Death Penalty."The New Jersey Senate voted Monday to make the state the first in the country to repeal the death penalty since 1976, when the United States Supreme Court set guidelines for the nation's current system of capital punishment.Approval in the Senate was seen as the biggest obstacle to the repeal, and in the end, it passed 21 to 16, receiving the bare minimum number of votes required in the 40-seat chamber. Three senators did not vote.Legislators on both sides of the debate said they expected the measure to pass easily on Thursday in the General Assembly, where Democrats hold 50 of the 80 seats.Gov. Jon S. Corzine, a Democrat and a staunch opponent of the death penalty, has said he would sign a measure ending executions."Today New Jersey can become a leader, an inspiration to other states," Senator Robert Martin, a Republican from Morris Plains who voted for the bill, said during Monday's debate. For those opposed to

TX SEN: Cornyn Votes Against Tax Relief For Middle Class
Today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn voted against legislation that would have provided tax relief for nearly two million middle class families in Texas. The legislation would have prevented about $1.5 million Texans from paying the Alternative Minimum Tax. The legislation Cornyn voted against included tax credits for college tuition, tax relief for members of the armed forces, and tax deductions for school teachers buying supplies for their classrooms out of their own pockets. State Rep. Rick Noriega (D-Houston), who is running against Cornyn, decried Cornyn’s vote. “Once again, this demonstrates that John Cornyn is out of touch with regular Texans and Texas values,” said State Representative Rick Noriega, who on Monday officially filed as a candidate for Senator Cornyn’s seat. At this point, some background on the AMT is necessary. It was introduced by the Tax Reform Act of 1969. It was intended to target a very small amount of high-income households that had been

      Australia Votes
So the big day is upon us. Who will win? I am still saying Howard by a greatly reduced margin. Kev is not a leader, he is a walking cacophony of (bad) bumper stickers with a distinct lack of ability to answer a question. Still....He is not Mark Latham....remember that lunatic? I stand amazed that the Australian people seem to have quickly forgotten that the very same...the EXACT SAME people who told us 4 years ago Latham was the messiah (who in reality ought to have been locked up), are now telling us Kevin Rudd is. I myself will not be voting Liberal this time, my local candidate is an unworthy twit. I will be voting Family First, the only other even vaguely conservative candidate in this electorate. Yes I know my preferences will trickle down to the Liberal candidate, but hopefully enough people are annoyed by his amazing disloyalty to the party to at least make it obvious in the final count. I pick Howard by around 3 seats. I also suspect the Greens may gain the balance

If you need information on how to vote, the following are the most useful reporting on it that I can find from a distance, and voting in Singapore can be done at the Australian High Commission today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday - Polling Day).
