      New Voter ID Cards
Have you wondered why you are being issued new voter ID cards despite you having the old ones? Any guesses? Well the reason is that government has lost all the data regarding the old voter ID cards and this is their way of data recovery.

How Can The AG Claim Victory In Voter Suppression Case Settlement?

Waco Paper Has Right Idea On Voter ID
It is nice to see that there is at least one daily newspaper in Texas that has the right idea on Voter ID: With proposed voter identification bills, they say their overriding concern is ballot security, and they say it’s a serious problem. They talk of illegal aliens voting and voter fraud undermining democracy. In the last Legislature session, those pushing a voter ID bill were asked for evidence of a crisis. They couldn’t produce it. […] Republicans promoting this say the state could provide photo IDs for voters without drivers’ licenses. Of course it could. But some people — namely the oldest and poorest Texans — would be unreachable, out of the loop and facing obstacles as they exercise their right to vote. Texas has no compelling reason to pass a voter ID law. The l

Voter ID Idiocy From The Texarkana Gazette
One of the worst editorials we’ve seen lauding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Crawford case relating to Voter Identification comes from none other than the Texarkana Sun, in far North East Texas. Check out some of what the Sun had to say earlier this week: It’s just common sense. But don’t try to tell that to some people. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court wisely ruled states can require photo identification before allowing someone to vote. The justices voted 6-3 to uphold an Indiana law requiring proof of identity from voters. The decision also impacts about 25 states across the U.S. that have such laws. It is likely more states will pass the requirement now that the Constitutional issue has been settled. For most of us, the idea of showing photo identif

Abbott’s Shining Example Of A Voter Fraud Prosecution Goes Down The Toilet
Remember back in 2006 and 2007 when Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott was crowing about a bunch of “voter fraud” indictments in Hidalgo and Starr Counties? It appears, now that the majority of those cases have been dismissed, that the AG has little or nothing to crow about: Criminal charges against two politiqueras accused of tampering with ballots in the 2005 McAllen mayoral election were dropped Tuesday, the same day their case was scheduled to go to trial. Hidalgo County Court-at-law Judge Jaime Palacios dismissed the case against Maria Helena Belasquez and Alicia Liscano Molina at the request of prosecutors who did not feel they had enough evidence to convince a jury of wrongdoing. The decision comes five days after a similar case was dismissed against another politiquera,

Abbott’s Amicus Brief In Voter ID Case Riddled With Errors, Lies
In Crawford v. Marion County Board of Elections, the landmark Voter ID case presently before the U.S. Supreme Court, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has taken the lead for the right wing and, along with eight other state attorneys general, filed a brief in support of an Indiana Voter ID law. The problem is that the brief [.pdf], written by Abbott and his staff at the AG’s office is riddled with errors and outright lies. You have to look no further than page four to find both the first major error and the first major lie of the brief: Petitioners' claim that voting fraud is largely chimerical is belied by the facts. For example, for decades, the State of Texas has grappled with the challenges of voting fraud. Lyndon B. Johnson's 1946 Senate campaign is only the most infamous instance, but serious allegations of voter fraud have persisted, especially in South Texas, for more than a century. Can you spot the error? Voter Turnout in U.S. Elections Not Increased by Early Voting Measures
Washington, DC—Early voting measures are touted by election reform advocates as a principal way of increasing voter turnout, but a new empirical study by political scientists concludes that most early voting options have a negligible or even negative impact on turnout. The research, conducted by Paul Gronke, Eva Galanes-Rosenbaum, and Peter A. Miller (all of Reed College), is entitled “Early Voting and Turnout” and appears in an election reform symposium in the October issue of PS: Political Science & Politics, a journal of the American Political Science Association. The full symposium is available online at Symposium: The Future of Election Reform in the States.Early voting describes any system where election rules and procedure are relaxed to allow voters to cast their ballot prior to the official Election Day. By the late 1990s twenty U.S. states had at least one type of early voting on the books. The aftermath of the 2000 presidential elections and passage of the 2002 Help

Romney won the straw poll, with Huckabee, often considered to be a favorite among Christian fundamentalists, placing second. This is an impressive win for Romney, as Huckabee is sounding more and more like the sort of theocrat these folks are seeking:He called for a constitutional amendment declaring marriage to be between a man and a woman and decried the "holocaust of liberalized abortion.""We do not have the right to move the standards of God to meet cultural norms. (which I agree with) conservative religious voters are hypocrites, because we don't think government programs are the best vehicle to help the poor and downtrodden. This was my comment on that post:Politicians always inject their beliefs into policy decisions. Otherwise they wouldn't truly believe them. Even if those beliefs are atheistic, Muslim, what have you. Obama gets warning from voter
A voter is giving Barack Obama some heartfelt advice, that to me makes a lot of sense, and not only blows off the voter but seems to go out of his way immediately afterwards to do the exact opposite. The voter is Maggie North of Claremont, NH and the advice she gave Obama was basically to take the high road. She said getting involved in spats with the other candidates would only hurt him. His response was that it was just part of the process and likened it to collegiate “hazing”. And this was, of course, jumped on immediately as proof of his immature character and unfitness to lead. Obviously in a Presidential campaign the candidate will get advice form every corner and then pummeled for not taking said advice. I’d hate to suggest that anyone should become “more of a politician” so lets just say he should be a bit more circumspect about his answers. Not that it really matters as Hillary already has the nod from the Democrats as long as she does not do something stupid between now

Many “journalists” are saying that nothing important was learned. How wrong they are. This morning we had it confirmed that Paul McNulty, the Deputy Attorney General, was given a report on February 6th, 2007 that said black voters were caged and their votes were not counted in the 2004 election. We learned that even though he had the information, the Deputy Attorney General decided to do absolutely nothing about it. In fact, he allowed Tim Griffin, the man accused of the caging, to remain the interim US Attorney in Arkansas until he resigned effective June 1st, 2007. Griffin’s resignation was triggered when John Conyers, of the House Judiciary Committee, picked up the caging lists from Greg Palast, the reporter that exposed Griffin’s caging extravaganza.Had it not been for John Conyers of the House of Representatives, Tim Griffin would sti

Voter-Fraud Complaints by GOP Drove Dismissals
So we have more politicizing of the Department of Justice by the Bush White House. I wonder if we have ever had a “mutiny” of sorts by the GOP against a sitting President? He seems to be doing his damnedest to take the party down with him. President Bush’s job performance numbers are in the 20’s which is the lowest any President has had in a generation. It’s even lower than Richard Nixon’s numbers when he resigned. Rick Hasen, a professor at Loyola Law School who runs an election law blog, said that "there's no question that Karl Rove and other political operatives" urged Justice officials to apply pressure on U.S. attorneys to pursue voter-fraud allegations in parts of the country that were critical to the GOP.In this case it would seem that the fired attorneys weren’t prosecuting enough cases of voter fraud against Democrats in particular. Not that I feel a lot of sympathy for them as any time one of their candidates wins it’s “the will of the people” and when on

      One Voter... One Vote...
Let me start off with a simple concept. One person, one vote is the back bone of our democracy. Always has been and should remain so. So why all of a sudden are people like the Star and Tribune editorial staff wanting to change it? Well behind the thinly veiled attempts to show that elections decided by a plurality are inherently unfair; the real reason is that Mike Hatch lost to Tim Pawlenty and many Democrats want to displace the blame for the result onto third party candidates. They also want to stack the deck in the future so that third parties do not have the sort of influence that they currently have. Let's first start out with the idea that you need to gain a majority of the votes to declare a legitimate victory. This is simply not true. Many Democratic governments are run by multiple parties, where a majority victory is rare and where multiple parties must work together to gain consensus. If we have a flaw in our own system it is likely the lack of consensus building and th

The Truth About Voter ID Laws
Now we know ... they're designed to suppress the vote of Republicans, and in particular the votes of elected Republican officials. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) "found out just how serious elections officials are about the new voter ID law when he showed up to vote at his polling place," reports the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Even though" the poll workers knew "perfectly well" who he was, Chabot was turned away from the polls when it was deemed he did not have proper ID. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) also had problems voting, reports Think Progress. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) was also turned away from the polls because of improper ID, WLTX-TV reports. Taegan Goddard has the links to the individual stories.

Voter Disenfranchisement? Nonsense…Just Stupid Poll Workers
Election Day had barely begun when complaints started pouring in about problems with the new and improved electronic voting systems in a number of states. But rather than admit that the electronic voting scheme is fraught with problems, this time the talking heads are blaming poll workers. Let’s see…in 2000 it was Floridians who were incapable of punching their ballots correctly (even though they’d been successful for decades). In 2004 it was the people in Ohio who couldn’t seem to get it right. Both times, problems with voting favored the Republicans. This year, the blame is going to poll workers. Will the Republicans again capitalize in a system seriously gone awry? And if they do, how much more of these shenanigans are we going to put up with? elections, voting, electronic+voting+machines Tags: elections, voting, electronic+voting+machines Click these buttons to share this story:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and d

      Voter Guide
Today is election day, and if you're anything like me (let's hope not) you'll be whistling over your morning breakfast at the thought of taking part in the wonderful democratic practice. Election day is my Superbowl Sunday. Every second Tuesday in November I'm like a baby in a titty bar. And if you think about it, it's a lot like legalized gambling. Only you can't win money… just good policies. And you can't really lose anything that you haven't already lost. At least not immediately. I mean other than your soul... but who needs a soul? Our very own Journalistic Error had a "Voter Guide" enclosed this week, assuring that those of us too stupid to make up out own minds could still take part in the democratic process. Because I know that a lot of people are guilted into voting, I'm here to offer my help as well. Here are some things to keep in mind when you cast your ballots today. And because this is a satirical publication, some of the following will fly in the f

Bush Must Think The Average American Voter Is Stupid
Today, GWB is in Montana flogging his agenda and suggesting Democrats are bad for America. I don’t know about you, but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of uniting going on by the supposed and self proclaimed “uniter, not a divider.” The W, Rove and Co must really think that the average American Voter is downright stupid. Otherwise, why would they feel the need to break down the very complex geopolitical climate and substantially challenging issues that he and his party have created (e.g. Iraq) in to two very straight forward concerns that are followed up by the usual dualistic rhetorical prop where one side is always wrong and their’s is the only “right” way? Is any one else offended by how stupid they must think we are? There’s a lot of big issues facing the voters around the country. The two biggest issues are these: Which party is going to keep your taxes low and keep this economy growing; and which party is going to take
