Tired of your phone service? It may be time to try Vonage

A Special Place in Hell for Vonage
I was a faithful SunRocket Voip (R.I.P.) user and never had problems with Sunrocket; until they went out of business that is. After using Vonage this is my experience:I recently cancelled my service with Vonage after 4 months and 21 days. I cancelled my service because it consistently drop calls and I would have a missing dial tone at least twice a week. It became a regular practice to reboot the device, and/or call Tech Support and spend 30-45 minutes of my day trying to resolve the problem. (And trust me, you do NOT want to deal with the customer service department for this company. They barely speak English. It's almost like you're being secretly taped for a funny TV show...)I understood that the 'No Contract' advertised by Vonage was untrue, and that I would be charged $39.99 to

Vonage Woes: 2007 was Tough Year for the VoIP Firm
Vonage is facing some customer complaints over a multi-day outage this past weekend. But that's the least of its worries. On Friday telecommunications equipment maker Nortel Networks filed a lawsuit against Vonage in a U.S. District Court in Delaware claiming that it violated nearly a dozen patents. This past year has been a rough one for the voice over Internet protocol company. I have to say, the long-term outlook is getting bleaker for the firm as it faces a seemingly endless stream of lawsuits. At this point Vonage's lawyers should be experts with patent infringement lawsuits after the dealings with patent lawsuits filed by AT&T, Sprint-Nextel and Verizon. Those patent fights alone cost the broadband telephone company a grand total of $239 million, according to reports. It's been a sad tumble for Vonage after bursting onto the scene as one of the most promising VoIP firms out there. Oh, how quickly things have changed. 2007 has been particularly bad with the resignation of CEO

Vonage owes $120 Million to Verizon, Appeal Denied
Bloomberg reports that Vonage lost the appeal against courts decision against it regarding the Patent case by Verizon. Well I hope Vonage does not end up like a burned rocket. Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Vonage Holdings Corp., the unprofitable Internet phone service provider, must pay $120 million to end a patent lawsuit won by Verizon Communications Inc. after a U.S. appeals court refused to reconsider the case. Vonage settled the infringement suit on Oct. 25 after Verizon won both a jury verdict and an appeal in the case. The accord left open the amount to be paid until the appeals court decided whether to grant Vonage's request for reconsideration. Legal costs have eaten into Vonage's cash flow and may increase its risk of bankruptcy. The Holmdel, New Jersey-based company said yesterday that it may not have enough money to pay $253.5 million in debt due as early as December 2008. Vonage, which generated cash of $22.5 million in the third q

Vonage Clears Up Last Legal Cloud on Horizon
Tentative $39 million settlement with AT&T means that the VoIP pioneer can get on with business. That makes it three down and none (that we know of) to go. Vonage's tentative settlement of AT&T's patent-infringement lawsuit takes care of its last oppressive legal problem, following similar settlements with Sprint Nextel and Verizon. Now, the company can get on with the business of providing cheap consumer broadband VoIP. The question is how good that business will be, especially since the settlements will set the VoIP pioneer back a significant sum.The agreement in principle, which Vonage described in its Q3 financial-results announcement, would require it to pay AT&T $39 million over five years. That's a lot less than the $80 million it will pay Sprint and the $80 million to $120 million it will pay Verizon. While the combined payouts will amount to some $200 million or more, they eliminate some major uncertainties about Vonage's future. It's a big change from the dark

AT&T Sues Vonage, Demonstrates Survival Skills
27 October 2007Stepping on high-profile upstart counters accusations of obsolescence.AT&T just reported its revenue for Q3 of 2007: $30.1 billion. Vonage reported revenue of $206 million for Q2, the VoIP company's latest numbers. AT&T is suing Vonage for patent infringement, after Sprint Nextel and Verizon did the same thing. And while it might seem like an uneven match, every company has the right and even duty to protect itself and what belongs to it. Still, AT&T is hardly in danger of going bankrupt — or even losing a dollar or two in share price — as a result of losing customers to Vonage. So it makes you wonder what the giant telephone company is protecting itself from. The obvious explanation is that AT&T is worried about losing control of its intellectual property. If a business doesn't defend its property from even the most minor misuse, the theory goes, it might lose its right to defend it. It's not unlike protecting a trademark by pouncing on every insta

In March 2007, a jury held that Vonage is infringing three valid Verizon patents. The jury awarded $58 million in damages. The trial judge subsequently issued an injunction which was stayed pending Vonage's appeal. In September 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the trial court's decisions on infringement, validity, and injunction as to two of the Verizon patents (the '574 and '711) and remanded as to the third patent (the '880). Vonage Get Sued by AT&T Now, For Infringing VoIP Patents.
Looks like Vonage does not have a place to hide these days. AT&T Inc. on Friday has filed a lawsuit against VOIP provider Vonage, seeking damages for alleged patent infringement. The case was filed in Western District of Wisconsin. Why Wisconsin? you may NOT ask but Russell Shaw at ZDNet thinks that there could be more to this;"Less consequential, but more head-scratching: why the filing in Western Wisconsin? Is this an attempt on AT&T’s part to seek a decision in a U.S. Court their lawyers perceive to be friendly toward patent holders?"AT&T alleged that Vonage wilfully infringed an AT&T patent related to telephone systems that allow people to make VOIP (voice-over-Internet Protocol) calls using standard telephone devices.I think it is big corporations not wanting to share what could be theirs. Or perhaps get them while they are down. On the other hand is it not the same allegation that Vonage just settled with Sprint Nextel?, more than 100 patents covering technology

Why Skype and Vonage must die ?
12 October 2007Skype and Vonage illustrate what is wrong with user communications: They are "closed" and not standards-based. These strategies support business models that are not in line with 21st century wants and needs. They have to go!I've been a user of Skype and Vonage voice over IP (VoIP) services for a long time. I use Skype to talk with my editor at and to connect with a few friends back in England, while Vonage has reduced my regular phone bills enormously, particularly for international calls. These things are on the plus side. The minus side? With Vonage, it has been the aggravation factor: It is hard to get good quality, at least over DSL, without resorting to blind experimentation, and using it to support TiVo or a home alarm system is a pain. Even when everything appears to be working with Vonage, you get occasional weird sound-quality problems, and faxing is only moderately satisfactory (incomplete transmissions seem to account for about half of all faxes I send).Yet ag

Vonage announced yesterday that the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit partially remanded a March 8th jury verdict where the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia said that Vonage infringed on three Verizon patents. Per Vonage’s recent press release, “The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit remanded the infringement verdict on the 880 patent and affirmed the verdict on the 574 and 711 patents. Further, the Court of Appeals vacated the entire award of $58 million in damages and the 5.5% royalty. BON VOYAGE VONAGE
Shares in Internet phone service Vonage fell below $1 yesterday amid mounting concerns the company will be run out of business by patent problems with rivals Verizon and Sprint. Vonage was hit with its second major legal setback in two days when a federal appeals court upheld a ruling that Vonage's technology infringed two Verizon patents. The decision bars Vonage from using the patents in its core technology for making Web phone calls and leaves the company on the hook for millions of dollars in damages. The original court ruling ordered Vonage to pay Verizon $58 million in damages and 5.5 percent of future royalties, but an appeals court, which rejected a third patent infringement claim by Verizon, ruled those numbers need to be re-evaluated. In a statement following the ruling, Vonage Chief Legal Officer Sharon O'Leary said it's "business as usual" for the company, and claimed that Vonage already has figured out how to work around the patents. Vonage’s share dipped to 93-cents, its lowest value since the company went public in May 2006. Vonage has been charged with the violations of three Verizon Communications Corp. patents in building its Internet phone system. The lawsuit awarded Verizon with $58-million (U.S.) in damages, plus 5.5-percent royalties on future Vonage revenues. Reminder this was just two days after Vonage was ordered to pay Sprint Nextel $69.5-million in damages, after a jury found that Vonage willfully infringed on six Sprint telecommunications patents. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit directed the trial court to reconsider the verdict on one of the three patents, and it vacated the damages and royalty awards. They were vacated because the lower court did not specify which portion of the damages were corresponding to which patent. The appeals court found that the district court improperly created the third patent - wireless access to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. As of n

      Vonage Safe….For Now
“Executives at Vonage breathed a huge sigh of relief yesterday after the Washington, D.C. U.S. Court of Appeals granted the company a permanent stay of injunction related to its legal fight with Verizon. The appellate court had granted Vonage a temporary stay until a hearing in which Vonage and Verizon could argue the merits related to a permanent stay could be held. Vonage had lost a jury trial in which it was determined that the company had violated patents held by Verizon. That verdict led to a US$58 million dollar judgment against Vonage. The trial judge later issued an injunction against Vonage that, if upheld, would have forced Vonage not to sign up any new customers to its VoIP service.” What is not said above is that Vonage has a bit more time to work on a workaround, the same one they said they did not have just days ago. In theory if they can succeed then Vonage could continue to be in business. Although they would much rather win their patent appeal so they wo

Is This The End For Vonage?
A federal judge has issued an injunction preventing Vonage from signing up any new customers.  Vonage was found guilty of patent infringements earlier this month.  The patents belong to Verizon.  While the judge didn’t grant Verizon’s request which is a permanent injunction, Vonage states that with them unable to add new customers is just as bad.  Click the link to BetaNews for more information on the Judgment against Vonage.  I don’t know much about Vonage or the case, but I’d hate to see Vonage go out of business as they seem like a decent VOIP service for the home.   Update:  According to Gigaom, Vonage has been granted a temporary stay from the U.S Court of Appeals and they will be able to continue signing up new customers.

Judge puts halt on new Vonage customers
A federal judge on Friday ordered Vonage not to accept any new customers while it continues to infringe on Verizon Communications patents covering some aspects of Internet phone calls. In at least a temporary setback for the leading voice over Internet Protocol provider and its some 2.2 million subscribers, U.S. District Judge Claude [...]

      New Customers, Not for Vonage
If you remember the last update (posted here) Vonage lost a landmark lawsuit claiming that they infringed on a number of Verizon patents. Well now things just got worse for the VOIP provider. A US District Court judge has barred Vonage from obtaining new customers as a result of the previous settlement. Existing customers will still be able to use the VOIP service but you won’t see commercials for Vonage service anytime soon. This is the first step in what could be a few for Verizon to have Vonage completely shut down due to the patent infringements. You can read more here. Thanks: Computer World Share This

      Verizon screws Vonage
Judge Claude Hilton issued a permanent injunction against Vonage with the purpose of disallowing their customers to make calls to standard phone lines. The argument is that Vonage is infringing on patents held by Verizon. This could have permanent and serious consequences for VoIP, since nearly every VoIP service uses the technology that Verizon claims as their own (ie: VoIP to POTS). IMO, this whole thing seems baseless. Other companies were using the technology in question before Verizon patented it, and the whole case was just decided by which side had more money to throw at it. It’s just yet another case of a rich corporation crushing innovation in order to retain their relevance in an evolving market. Sponsored By: Anime Thoughts Yet another anime forum

Verizon wins permanent injunction in Verizon v. Vonage
News came in today that Verizon has won the patent lawsuit against VOIP giant Vonage. A United States District judge barred Vonage from using technology protected by three of Verizon's patents. Vonage of course plans on appealing, but news of the appeal did not keep Vonage's stocks from bottoming out. Stay tuned to see how Vonage comes out of this suit in the weeks to come.

Sprint-Nextel Next in Line to Bash Vonage
(Archived in: Online Usability Related Miscellany Social Design)VOiP is a great concept and the technology will only improve. I used to be a Vonage subscriber, and generally liked the service except for occasional quality glitches, and the fact that if your Internet service is down then you do not have telephone service. Customer service was lacking as well with long hold times (12-18 months ago). The pricing of the service plan still made it a good value. So, I am not a Vonage basher per se, but do want to keep abreast of the current market with updates to the company's pending legal woes. What follows is an excerpt from a news report today. To read the full story go to this online article by Jim Duffy. This is on the heels of the lost suit to Verizon."In October 2005, Sprint Nextel filed a suit against Vonage and two other VOIP providers claiming the companies violated seven patents on technology for processing and delivering packetized voice and data, including VOIP. Its suit

      Vonage (VG)
Yesterday I wondered aloud if there's a chance that VG could eventually go to ZERO. This morning Buckingham is thinking VG has the potential to go to $1. The firm believes that Sprint (S) will file a similar to the one VG lost to Verizon (VZ). BUCK had previously had a $4 target on Vonage shares.

The Promise of Voice 2.0-Will Vonage Survive?
(Archived in: Online Usability Related Miscellany Social Design)Will VOiP survive? Of course. Will Vonage survive? Probably not. Anyone that has ever been involved in a lawsuit knows that the party with the most money usually wins, and Vonage just lost a big one to Verizon. Check out yesterday's news and return to this page.Vonage has been plagued with lawsuits (everything from patent infringement to investor relation problems with their IPO). If Vonage is not getting sued, it seems they are suing someone else. Vonage sued AT&T over the name CallVantage in 2004. Pretty sure AT&T won that one since they are still using the name.Voice 2.0, or anything "2.0" is a great concept. The reason these concepts have not already emerged and thrived, is the same reason we do not have hydrogen powered vehicles and flying cars. Certainly the technology already exists, and has for some time. There is no doubt that telephony, computer, and television technologies continues to converge. The problem

Vonage (VG) - Another One Going To ZERO?
Flash from the WSJ... "Federal jury rules that Internet-phone company Vonage infringed on Verizon's patents." At some point this year it will be bye bye to Vonage. Reuters reports VG will have to pay Verizon (VZ) royalties along with a $58 mln fine.

      Vonage
The Vonage web site is light and bright and clearly sets out the products and deals on offer, that's important for me when talking about phones and Voip. Vonage has been in the market for exactly four years - it says so on the site - offering VoIP information on its site, as well as news on telecoms developments. I found it hard to understand the principles behind VoIP Internet phones, so
