Honda is ramping up for production of its FCX Clarity, the industry’s first dedicated fuel-cell vehicle for customer use. The automaker will begin assembly in May in Tochigi, Japan, and will build a small pool of vehicles available for lease in the U.S. this summer. A still-secret number of consumers will be able to lease a Clarity fuel-cell vehicle for $600 a month for three years, which will include maintenance and insurance. The lessee must pay for the hydrogen, which costs about $5 per kilogram in compressed-gas form. The Clarity’s fuel tank will hold about five kilograms. That amount is good for a range of about 270 miles, giving the Clarity fuel economy equivalent to 68 mpg, or about two times the efficiency of a conventional gasoline engine, says Steve Ellis, manager of FCV mark

      Wanted: Volunteers!
There are many ways you can learn about volunteer opportunities, including the following: Check with Keep America Beautiful or other local organizations for community clean-up days. Your local Parks and Recreation Department is a great resource for outdoor projects. Check with local nursing homes and hospitals for “toddler days.” Take on home baking projects for fundraising bake sales or meal delivery services. Ask your local Chamber of Commerce for information about local organizations that may have volunteer opportunities. Call non-profit organizations you like and ask what you can do. They may have needs/volunteer opportunities that you haven’t even thought of. Check for opportunities listed in national volunteer website databases such as VolunteerMatch.org (has a designation for kid-friendly opportunities) or Idealist.org (has designations for teen opportunities and under-age-12 opportunities). Volunteers look for improvement over bye week
The University of Tennessee’s football team has certainly had a rough month of September. The schedule did not do Phil Fulmer’s young team any favors by having to face two of the Top 6 teams in America on the road. To many fans, it is not the fact that the team lost, because Cal and Florida are legitimate contenders, but how the losses occurred. Good special teams, ball security, and quality tackling are things that are paramount when you may not be as experienced or as talented as your foes. And this team has been putrid at all three through 4 games. The glimmer of hope for the Vol faithful is that things like these can be addressed during a bye week. Here are some suggested remedies for what is ailing the Vols right now: I certainly think that a few days of focused special teams, where the coaches get more team speed on the field in kick coverage and guys concentrate on staying in their lanes would benefit the team. Treatment of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
The primary treatment for those volunteers who are experiencing vicarious traumatization is to temporarily have them refrain from the volunteer activities that precipitated the condition. It may be very difficult to help volunteers acknowledge that they are experiencing vicarious traumatization, but it’s essential that their supervisor and/or colleagues help them recognize what’s going on. If they continue to volunteer, their effectiveness will likely be compromised as will their future ability to help. Burnout is the inevitable outcome of unrelieved vicarious traumatization. Once volunteers have reached that point, they will be unable to be helpful and they greatly increase the risk to themselves of physical and/or emotional disorders. If vicarious traumatization is caught early, a brief break involving rest and recreation may be all that’s needed. If it has been allowed to progress, a longer period of recovery will likely be needed. During that time it will be impor

Prevention of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
Vicarious traumatization may be prevented by ensuring that volunteers have adequate training and ongoing supervision. Knowing ahead of time what to expect can help volunteers develop coping strategies before coming face-to-face with difficult situations. Being told that emotional reactions are to be expected and are normal can go a long way toward freeing up the volunteers to acknowledge what they are feeling and ask for help. If the volunteers are aware of the potential for developing vicarious traumatization and are educated about the signs and symptoms, they will be more likely to be willing to take a break from their volunteer activities to allow time for decompression and rest. The supervisors of volunteers have a huge responsibility for screening, training, and providing support on an ongoing basis. Regular group and/or individual meetings between the volunteers and their supervisors can provide for debriefings and evaluation of the volunteers’ state of emotional st

      Vicarious Trauma and Volunteers
People who volunteer their time and talents to work with those who have experienced pain and loss may develop a traumatic response to what they have seen and heard. Called “vicarious traumatization” or “compassion fatigue,” the constellation of symptoms can include intrusive images and thoughts, hypervigilance, fear, numbing, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and depression. Some of the very qualities that motivate people to become volunteers may be the qualities that make it difficult for them to pace themselves or even allow themselves to recognize that they are becoming traumatized. A desire to help others can lead people to ignore physical fatigue or emotional exhaustion. Observing and hearing about the atrocities that exist in the world can lead to a spiritual crisis, a questioning of the world view that one had prior to becoming aware first-hand of the tragedies that some people experience. Some people may try to deal with these symptoms in unhealthy ways, s

      Any Volunteers? In Portland, Yes
One of the great things about Portland is that the people here are active. They’re on their bikes, walking the dog, running, exercising, protesting, keeping “Portland weird.”And we didn’t need a study to point it out, but all of this activeness isn’t self-centered. In fact, Portland ranks sixth in the country for percentage of residents who volunteer. According to a federally funded report by the Corporation for National and Community Service (I must confess I’ve never heard of this group), 36% of Portland residents volunteer. The report says that four factors encourage high volunteer rates: attachment of a community (such as high levels of home ownership), low commute times to and from work, high education levels among the population and the presence of nonprofit organizations in a community. Here are the cities with the highest percentage of volunteers.1. I left the following comment: I heard about this story today on the radio.  I fear that New Orleans volunteers will/are having similar issues with mold toxicity, the consequences of which are only just beginning to be understood. Also, I find it interesting that mercury is specifically named in the list of toxins.  Asbestos makes sense, but how was there any sort of concentration of mercury in the building?  And juxtapose a report like this that specifically names mercury as a cause of chronic sickness against the FDA declaring that mercury in your mouth is safe.  MAKES NO SENSE!
