“I am quite sure that no new order can be built up in India so long as the spirit of the ICS pervades our administration and our public services...Therefore it seems essential that the ICS and similar services must disappear completely as such before we can start real work on a new order.” These are the ominously prophetic words of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, com
After 9,000 years of silence, Chile's Chaitén volcano (pictured on May 3) is erupting with lava, ash—and lightning (full story).Since the volcano awoke on May 2, it has continued erupting intermittently, blanketing the area in ash and forcing more than 4,000 people to flee.

The basic difference between the two is that volcano vaporizer is based on the principle of conduction heating principle. And the vapir vaporizer is based [...]

This is a Potter's Angelfish (Centropyge Potteri), one of the dwarf angelfish species we have. They're a tough one to get a shot of because they dart into the coral as soon as you get reasonably close to them. The volcano has been particularly active the last couple of weeks, first spewing great amounts, several times the usual, of sulfur dioxide into the air, then having it's first explosive event, along with large amounts of ash now, since the 1920's. No major danger yet, although they've considered evacuating nearby communities due to toxic gasses. All of the sulfur dioxide has brought tremendous amounts of VOG (volcanic fog) to the Kona side the last 8-10 days or so, although it was a hair less thick today and yesterday in comparison to earlier.

Tangkuban Perahu, or Tangkuban Parahu in local Sundanese dialect, is an active volcano 30 km north of the city of Bandung, West Java. It is a popular tourist attraction where tourists can hike or ride to the edge of the crater to view the hot water springs upclose. This stratovolcano is on the island of Java, has erupted about seventeen times since 1826 and last erupted was in 1983.The name translates roughly to "upturning of (a) boat" or "upturned boat" in Sundanese, referring to the local legend of its creation. The story tells of "Dayang Sumbi", a beauty who lived in West Java. She cast away her son "Sangkuriang" for disobedience, and in her sadness was granted the power of eternal youth by the gods. After many years in exile, Sangkuriang decided to return to his home, long after the tw

Wonosobo: Up in an ancient, inactive volcano Kledung Pass Wonosobo by rosemariaWe shivered the entire time we were in Indonesia. When we hit the sack at 11pm, it was 12 degrees Celsius and my husband needed three blankets to ward off the cold. Isn't Indonesia supposed to be hot? Yes, but we were 2,093m above sea level in Dieng Plateau, central Java, and the winds were blowing mist into the crater we were staying at. There was a drizzle and no one was out and about except a vagrant who was laughing at the howling winds as if he were a character out of Shakespeare. The owner of the Bu Jono Losmen, where we were staying, promptly rang the police to inform them of the mad man. He assured us he would shoot the man with his shotgun if the fellow so much as came near the guest house. That got us to behave too. We endured the clove-scented, cigarette smoke billowing endlessly from him as if from a chimney without a word. Dieng Plateau is a town
The Volcano the Bear is an experience that could forever be imprinted on one’s memory. There’s soulful wailing, suggesting mullahs on top of white towers in North Africa, righteous free jazz freakouts, eerie plucked strings and song from Aaron Moore and Nick Mott and, apart from moments when the auto level control does the job a bit too viciously, the sound quality is pretty good. This record pours slowly and resolutely like a folk-psych dream urn, loaded with full metal banjoes; crumhorns at 12 O’clock; and autoharps at defcon 5. The experimentalism is couched in shifting tides of self-spun acidic harvest ballads that noisily well up into proto-Kraut thrums and tribal night trips around the pyre. A rural, squelchy, DIY delicacy which stinks of occidental embouchure so crystal crisp that every skkrrrr, pphaaapph and brrruuuummmm resonates like a small, sound-specific God, intertwined with beautifully skewed notes, voices and rhythms. ‘Amidst The Noise And Twigs&rsqu

Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano continues to expel smoke and ash. Mount Kelud, also known to locals in Indonesia as 'the sweeper', is expelling steam and ash from its crater. The mountain has already pushed magma out through its craters.
Experts are keeping a cautious eye on two volcanoes that appear poised to erupt. Mount Kelud in East Java has been spewing steam and ash from its crater for weeks while the alert on Mount Anak Krakatau, between the islands of Java and Sumatra.
A volcano in Indonesia that was mistakenly thought to have erupted is baffling scientists, who said Monday that energy surging inside it had surpassed that of its last eruption in 1990.Scientists abandoned their monitoring posts on Mount Kelud’s fertile slopes on Saturday when the tremors rumbling under the volcano became so strong they could no longer be measured. They could not see the peak through heavy cloud but said they believed it was erupting. Eventually they found that it had not.Volcanologist Agus Budianto said that the pressure of the energy rising inside Kelud, located in heavily-populated East Java, was now three to four times as strong as that which caused the last eruption, which killed 34.That eruption has created a blockage that magma has not been able to fully break through, lifting only some volcanic material under the crater lake, resulting in a column of steam rising from its surface, he said.“All indications point to an eruption, but the fact is, there has so

Indonesian officials plan to set up cinema screens and invite pop singers to perform at evacuation shelters near a threatening volcano in an effort to move people to safety. The historically deadly Mount Kelut, in East Java, was put on red alert more than two weeks ago, but hundreds of tremors shook the volcano on Thursday after days of calm, heightening fears of an imminent eruption. Despite efforts to evacuate all residents within a 10-kilometre danger zone around the crater, many have returned home or refused to leave, leaving officials concerned for their safety. "We will set up an outdoor cinema at several shelters in Blitar district in order to attract people to evacuate," said Kamtono, an official from one of the two districts that would be affected by the volcano blowing. "We are having big difficulties asking people to evacuate," he said. "They don't want to leave their livestock untended in the village and they also still believe the elderly people who are saying that Kelut

Volcano Tungurahua erupted spectacularly last year. Pictured above, molten rock so hot it glows visibly pours down the sides of the 5,000-meter high Tungurahua, while a cloud of dark ash is seen being ejected toward the left. Wispy white clouds flow around the lava-lit peak, while a star-lit sky shines in the distance. The above image was captured last year as ash fell around the adventurous photographer. Located in Ecuador, Tungurahua has become active roughly every 90 years since for the last 1,300 years. Volcano Tungurahua has started erupting again this year and continues erupting at a lower level even today.
INDONESIA'S Mount Kelud volcano, which was put on the country's second-highest alert level last month, shows several alarming signs indicating it may erupt, the country's top volcano expert said."I'm scared about Kelud," said Mr Surono, head of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Bandung."Kelud is now on the point of no return."The number of volcanic earthquakes at Mount Kelud, 90 km (55 miles) southwest of Indonesia's second-largest city Surabaya, has risen to as high as 23 in one day, compared with a maximum of 15 a day just before its last eruption in 1990, Mr Surono said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
Indonesian scientists have raised the alert for Mount Kelud, a volcano in East Java, to the second-highest level following increased activity, an official said on Sunday.Volcanic tremors and increased temperatures in the past four days have led to fears of an eruption, and residents have been told to stay away from the the 1,731-metre (5,712-foot) volcano, Yan Mulyana, an official at the Indonesian Vulcanology Survey, told Reuters.Mount Kelud is 87.5 kilometres southwest of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
Indonesia raised an alert for a volcano in the eastern part of Java, its most densely populated island, to its highest since the last eruption in 1990, amid signs that it may erupt. Mount Kelud, in Kediri, ``has been showing increasing activity,'' Surono, director of volcanology and mitigation of geological disasters at the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, said today. ``It's difficult to predict when the eruption may happen. The activity may even subside.'' The 1,731-meter (5,679-foot) volcano has emitted more than 300 metric tons of carbon dioxide a day in the past few days, or triple the normal measure, Surono said in a telephone interview. The alert was raised more than a week ago, and the volcano has been closed to tourists. If the alert is raised to its highest level, the government will evacuate residents.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
Masaya is an active volcano in Nicaragua. It spews out sulpher dioxide in huge billowing clouds. That combines with the rain to make "acid rain."No doubt about this acid rain being nasty stuff. It's choking to even try and breath through. But it makes for some pretty amazing sights. The rain clouds fly up over the lip of the volcano and smack right into the sulpher cloud. In a cataclysmic white-out that engulfs everything in its wake. It cuts visibility down to almost zero. And burns your mouth and throat. Probably messes up the paint job on the cars parked anywhere near it, too.I don't think the cross is helping keep this devil "acid rain" at bay. I'm sure I heard Mother Nature having a good giggle over the whole thing.
Masaya Volcano National Park in Nicaragua is a fascinating place of other-worldly scenery. The Masaya Caldera is made up of 5 different craters, San Pedro, Santiago, Nindiri, San Juan and Masaya. This cross is on Santiago Crater and was built there by the Spaniards in the 16th Century. It is named "La Cruz de Bobodilla" after Father Fancisco Bobadilla, and was placed on the lip of the crater in order to exorcise the devil. Okay, I'm pretty sure it's not the exact same cross, since I saw metal bolts holding it together. But you get the idea ...... they thought this was the mouth of hell. And an appeasement to any god would have been a good thing. Except for the eruptions that followed throughout history. Not everything works according to plan.Everything here is big. Even the sky is big.
The Santiago Crater of Masaya Volcano is huge. So big it's almost hard to imagine in a shot without some reference to size...like the teeny cars in the view above.Driving up to the crater through Masaya Volcano National Park makes you feel like you are in a totally different world. Lava flows with jagged rocks of all sizes litter this eerily beautiful landscape.Your first glimpse of the cross marks Santiago Crater. Huge billowing clouds of sulpher dioxide "smoke" look like visions of the end of the world. And smell like it.You are asked to park you car backside in at the viewing area because of the activity of this volcano in the recent past. Which is totally understandable when you see the fractures in huge chunks of rock seemingly ready to take the plunge over the side of the crater a

Ad Volcano is yet another variation on placing adverts on your website.
This one lets you set your own price when you sell advertising on your site which should be a useful way of increasing the revenue for high traffic sites but I’d have liked a little more guidance about what to charge initially. Still, there’s no downside in signing up and if too many advertisers take up the option of advertising in this way I can always move the prices up.
I’ve added myself to see how it runs so all being well there’ll be some people taking up the chance to advertise here in the not too distant future.

A leading vulcanologist has repeated his assertion that an Indonesian mud volcano was almost certainly manmade despite a new study claiming the eruption might have been triggered by an earthquake. Professor Richard Davies of Durham University's Centre for Research into Earth Energy Systems (CeREES), said the volcano, known locally as Lusi, was most likely caused by the drilling of a nearby exploratory borehole looking for gas.The Durham-led research discounted the effect of the earthquake as a cause of the eruption. Professor Richard Davies, of Durham University's Centre for Research into Earth Energy Systems (CeREES), said: "There were several problems with the exploration well prior to the eruption of the mud volcano, but it was when they started to pull the drill bit out of the hole that they probably sucked gas and water into the wellbore. "We have calculated that a water or gas influx would have caused a critical increase in the pressure in the hole, sufficient to fracture the
A report blaming an earthquake for a 2006 mud volcano eruption in Indonesia stoked a dispute on Tuesday about whether a gas drilling well or geology caused the disaster that engulfed thousands of homes.Scientists say they may never find the exact trigger for the continuing eruption of noxious-smelling mud from the ground in East Java that has engulfed an area four times the size of Monaco and forced about 15,000 people to leave.Lapindo disputes that its drilling was the trigger. "The available data supports the hypothesis that the initial activity ... was mainly triggered by the energy released by the 27th of May earthquake and not by the drilling," according to report by a team of scientists based in Norway, Russia, France and Indonesia. The study, accepted for publication in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, says the earthquake centered about 280 km (170 miles) away jolted faults under the island that ended up releasing pressure in deep rocks and spewed out the mud. The Philippines has revoked a permit issued to a South Korean company to build a spa resort on a restive volcano just outside the capital, an official said Friday. The construction of the spa on the crater of Taal Volcano in Batangas province, 50 kilometres south of Manila, had been suspended since last week amid protests over possible hazards.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) initially issued an environmental compliance certificate allowing Jung Ang Interventure Corp to go through with the project.
But DENR Secretary Angelo Reyes said his office has now cancelled the certificate after an investigation found that the Korean firm did not meet all requirements. (more…)

Indonesian environment minister Rachmat Witoelar says hundreds of hectares of land inundated by sludge from a mud volcano in East Java could be rehabilitated for raising catfish.Mr Witoelar says the government remains focused on trying to stop or slow the mud, which has been spewing out of the ground near the city of Surabaya since May last year. But he says if that is not possible, there is evidence to suggest that catfish can be raised in ponds made of the mud, and this could provide a livelihood for people who used to farm in the area.Damage done by the mudflow is estimated at more than $US3 billion.

Plan to build Philippine Island spa faces obstacles
By: Paterno Jr Rebosura for Ohmynews.com
To the chairman of Jung Ang Interventure Corp., a Korean company planning to construct a wellness spa, everything seemed to be in order.
The company found a piece of land on a volcanic island in the Philippines, signed an agreement with the local government for joint undertaking, obtained an environmental compliance certificate last year and even received blessings from national tourism officials.
Then, Kim Yoon ordered digging to begin on an access road to the proposed spa. The project was expected to generate 300 jobs. (more…)

A few days ago the area surrounding our volcano here on the Big Island, Kilauea, experienced a sudden and unusual flurry of small earthquakes. Yesterday our local newspaper, West Hawaii Today, reported on the front page that the lava had actually stopped flowing out of the Pu’u O’o vent. This is noteworthy because it has been erupting constantly since 1983; Kilauea is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes on earth. New fissures have appeared in the past day or two, and some rare plants and animals are in danger in some areas. However this startling change is good news for our leeward side of the island (except of course for some disappointed tourists): without the ensuing vog, our skies will be clearer and cleaner than they have been for 25 years, at least for a little while.
Several other volcanoes have been active the past week or so as well. In New Guinea, explosions from Rabaul rocked the surrounding areas as ash plumes rose 8900 feet. In Ecuador, both Tungu

Here again is a prime example of the "Nancy-Grace-ism" (i.e. "sensationalism") that is increasingly taking over the more popular and well-known news agencies. CNN's top story is still about the Virginia Tech killings. Now while it is a shocking event, and a tragic loss of life, it is nevertheless not any more important than the Nevado del Huila volcano that erupted yesterday, endangering the lives of more than 10,000 people!!! Yet, this significant and important report, again, is buried into obscurity. Now it does not take a genius to figure out which story is the "real" seller, you know, the money-maker of the two, i.e. Virginia Tech vs 400+ year old massive exploding earthquake causing volcano. You guessed it, they opt for playing on people's horror and penchant for sensationalistic stories for their best greedy money-making effect. The story about the significant eruption of this particular volcano does not merit more than a passing glance ... oh no! heaven forbid we actually high

Critics are concerned that the slightest tremor could trigger a fresh eruption and spell disaster for any nuclear reactor in its path. The consequences of a radioactive leak, through earthquake or eruption, could prove disastrous for Java - home to 100 million Indonesians.
By SETH MYDANSHow to tame a mud volcano: try dropping hundreds of giant concrete balls into it. In recent weeks, using a system invented at the Bandung Institute of Technology, workers have been releasing the balls from a complicated crane-pulley-sling contraption into the steaming vent known to scientists as “the big hole.” Mud volcano experts are bemused. No one has ever stopped an underground mud flow, they say, least of all with a home remedy like this. Don’t laugh, said Satria Bijaksana, one of three institute geologists who devised the plan, standing at the rim of a vast, dull-gray sea of mud. “I’m not just some crazy scientist throwing out wild ideas,” said Mr. Bijaksana, 42, who holds a doctorate in rock magnetism from Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada. “This is not a joke.” Mr. Bijaksana said he and his colleagues were on their own as they took on the volcano, developing their own theories and methods, and their own instruments for dealing with mud
Kledung Pass Wonosobo by rosemariaWe shivered the entire time we were in Indonesia. Dieng Plateau is a town located inside the dried-up lake of an ancient, inactive volcano. The edges of the cr

Toxic sludge is spewing much more slowly from an Indonesian "mud volcano" after an innovative bid to staunch the flow which has displaced 15,000 people, an official said Wednesday. Estimates had suggested 125,000 to 160,000 cubic metres of mud flowed from the crater daily, equivalent to the volume of about 40 to 50 Olympic size swimming pools.
Indonesian officials have begun dropping concrete balls into a devastating upwelling of mud in a novel but controversial plan to plug up the disaster.Over the next few weeks the team plans to drop a total of 1,500 concrete spheres, weighing up to 90 pounds (40 kilograms) each, in an attempt to stanch the flow of mud. The plan to plug the volcano is based on the assumption that the mud vent looks like the neck of an hourglass, said Davies, of England's Durham University. Indonesian experts hope the balls will form a snug fit, increasing the amount of friction the mud experiences and slowing or stopping its flow. "This has never been attempted before that I am aware," Davies said. "Nobody's ever tried to stop a mud volcano." But "the most likely possibility is that nothing will happen at all," he added, because the actual shape of the vent is likely to be far more complicated than a simple circle. What's more, disaster could loom if the plug holds, because pressure will continu
A PLAN to drop concrete balls into an oozing Indonesian "mud volcano" to slow its disastrous flow may be revised after they slid far deeper than expected. The balls slid 1km into the crater, roughly twice the depth anticipated, so many more than planned may be required to staunch the mudflow, said the operation's spokesman Rudi Novrianto."Based on our monitoring of Monday's operations, we may later decide to add to the number of ball chains, but the decision will only be made once the initial target of 374 chains have been dropped into the mud hole," Mr Novrianto said. Each chain comprises four concrete spheres weighing 400-500kg. Five chains had been dropped into the crater up to yesterday. The audacious but experimental plan aims to slow the toxic mudflow - which has submerged entire villages in East Java province - by about 50-70 per cent.
This is the Acatenango volcano summit. In front of us you can see Fuego Volcano.
The night was really cold and we could hear the volcanic eruptions of Fuego Volcano. After seeing the big red magma coming out at night we decided to plan a journey to Fuego.
That December (I must confess) didn’t seemed like a good idea as it was very active. But anyway we went there. Acatenango is almost 4,000 meters above sea level (where I am). And Fuego is considered one of the most beautiful ones.
There I am while marking the bearing and some other data on my GPS.
Volcano climbing became my passion, and there is nothing like being Photographed when you are distracted or enjoying the view.

Indonesian geophysicists hope to stem the flow of a destructive mud volcano on East Java by dropping chains of concrete balls into its mouth. The mud eruption began on 29 May last year in the middle of a rice paddy in the village of Porong, 30 kilometres south of Surabaya, the provincial capital. Since then, the volcano has spewed out up to 126,000 cubic metres of mud a day, flooding an area of more than 4 square kilometres. The scheme was dreamt up by three geophysicists at the Bandung Institute of Technology: Bagus Nurhandoko, Satria Bijaksana and Umar Fauzi. According to Basuki Hadimuljono, head of the national team managing the disaster, the project will have a budget of 4 billion rupiah (US$440,000) paid for by PT Lapindo Brantas, the oil drilling company that some locals blame for the disaster."It will make the mud tired. We're killing the mud softly," says Nurhandoko
Indonesian searchers Sunday combed a volcano on the island of Sumatra for an Austrian tourist reported missing after he set off to scale the mountain, police said.Police said Franz Resch, had set off to climb the jungle-clad 2,174-meter (7,260-foot) Mount Sibayak from the hill resort town of Brastagi last Tuesday and was reported missing Friday by staff at the hotel where he was staying. "We still have no report of the teams finding any trace of the tourist," said Second Inspector Harahap, on duty at the Tanah Karo district police in Kabanjahe, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of North Sumatra's capital Medan.
In a report released on January 23, a team of British researchers says the deadly upwelling began when an exploratory gas well punched through a layer of rock 9,300 feet (2,800 meters) below the surface, allowing hot, high-pressure water to escape. The research team, who published their findings in the February issue of GSA Today, also estimate that the volcano, called Lusi, will leave more than 11,000 people permanently displaced.Another unusual feature of the Indonesian eruption is that it involves a very thin, liquid mud, says Davies' colleague, Richard Swarbrick of Geopressure Technology Ltd. That means that the land around the volcano might collapse to form a crater, Swarbrick said.
Another weekend at Pacaya Volcano. Beautiful, nice weather, clear sky. This is the view you can get while you hike.

We figured some basic information on volcanic activity in the past and present cannot hurt, especially since a visit to our Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on everybody's agenda, however short their stay on our island. Besides a Mauna Kea Summit adventure, visiting a live volcano on the Big Island is one of the most fascinating experiences.
Have you ever sat outside on a warm summer evening and gazed up at the moon wondering what it was like for the astronauts to land there and walk around? I have and I tell you except that there is no atmosphere on the moon, parts of Volcanoes National Park remind me of pictures I've seen from the moon. Last week I caught 哥哥 playing with 妹妹's Milk powder. I have put the can of milk powder on the TV console in my bedroom for easy access. Sigh! There was milk powder everywhere, on my bed, on the floor, in the bottle sterilizer, in the toy box. It was literally everywhere in my bedroom. 哥哥 got the ultimate from me.Then yesterday, I caught him putting his food in a box of toy to play. Previously, I had caught him playing with liquid soap. He can finish playing with the whole bottle of liquid soap, that's 750ml, you know! He then pour water inside to make it full again. He's not dumb you know.Sighz! I really don't know how to deal with him. I tried talking nicely to him. I have explained to him, punished him, scolded him and also caned him. Nothing seems to work.He knows he shouldn't do it but he is still doing it. When he is caught, he will tell you, I shouldn't do this. It's wrong to do it. I'm sorry. I won't do it again. Then it happens again. The thing I ha
