Mt. Bromo & Semeru, A Spectacular Volcanic Landscape in East Java
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park covers some 800 square kilometers in the centre of East Java. It is the largest volcanic region in the province and there stands Mt. Semeru, which rises 3676 meters above sea level. At its northern end is the spectacular Tengger Caldera, Java's largest, with its 10 km barren desert-like sea of sand. Within the caldera rise the deeply fissured volcanic con

Geochemistry might be used to save lives during volcanic eruptions
Washington, June 6 (ANI): A scientist has hypothesized that macro-scale chemical engineering might be used to stop a volcanic lava flow in its tracks and save potentially thousands of lives and homes when the next eruption occurs. The scientist who has come up with this idea is R.D. Schuiling of Geochem Research BV, based in The [...]

      Oahu, a volcanic island
Oahu, a volcanic islandOahu is an example of a volcanic island. Volcanoes which were active long ago have been worn down and cut into valleys and ridges and are now represented by the Koolau Range and the Waianae Mountains. Diamond Head, Punchbowl, and Koko Head are volcanoes which were active such a short time ago that their original. form has not been much changed. The mountains reach a height sufficient to check the moistureladen trade winds, thus producing a fairly heavy rainfall on the windward side; but they are not high enough or continuous enough to prevent winds and rain from coming to the leeward side at Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, and Ewa. The valleys are broad enough to serve as fields for taro, and the small streams which run in most of them supply water enough for necessary irrigation. Near the seashore are groves of coconuts, and in the valleys and on the ridges at different elevations are the native trees and shrubs -- the hau, the ohia, the kukui, the koa, pandanus, and oth

Dinosaurs were killed by Volcanic eruptions in India
A series of monumental volcanic eruptions in India may have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, not a meteor impact in the Gulf of Mexico. The eruptions, according to a press release by EurekAlert, which created the gigantic Deccan Traps lava beds of India, are now the prime suspect in the most famous and persistent paleontological murder mystery, say scientists who have conducted a slew of new investigations honing down eruption timing."It's the first time we can directly link the main phase of the Deccan Traps to the mass extinction," said Princeton University paleontologist Gerta Keller. The main phase of the Deccan eruptions spewed 80 percent of the lava which spread out for hundreds of miles. It is calculated to have released ten times more climate altering gases into the atmosphere than the nearly concurrent Chicxulub meteor impact, according to volcanologist Vincent Courtillot from the Physique du Globe de Paris.Keller's crucial link between the eruption and the mass ex

Volcanic eruptions - Effects on climate
You may wonder what my sudden fascination with volcanic eruptions are all about. Well, I will tell you this much ... it has a direct bearing on human overpopulation, in many more ways than one (including the proliferation of earthquakes and other drastic climate changes). Not only are we the main cause of "global warming" but our actual "mass" (yes -our cumulative weight) is seriously affecting the dynamics of the Earth's crust - causing pressure points and unbearable strains which ultimately lead to disturbances in the tectonic plates --> leading to earthquakes --> leading to volcanic eruptions, etc. and so an ever widening "cycle" of destruction is created. This is only one aspect of our "western" civilization and its affects on the natural world. I will go into more detail and more explanations about this particular subject in a future post. For now I want to share with you information about the effects of Volcanic eruptions on climate, and why it is important to pay heed to these se

Experts warn of raised volcanic activity after powerful Indonesian quake
An earthquake that killed more than 70 people in western Indonesia may have led to heightened activity at three volcanoes, experts warned Friday, as thousands flocked to perform weekly prayers at mosques damaged by the temblor. "We should see the quake as a test for all of us ... and redeem ourselves by doing good deeds," said Muhammad Thantawi, a preacher told worshippers gathered outside a destroyed mosque close to Solok city on Sumatra island's western coast.Geologists said sensors on the slopes of three active volcanoes — Talang, Tandikat and Merapi — have detected above average activity since the 6.3 magnitude temblor, which was also lightly felt in Singapore and Malaysia.

Volcanic Blast Likely Killed Preserved Antarctic Fossil Plesiosaur
Amid 70-mile-an-hour winds and freezing Antarctic conditions, an American-Argentine research team has recovered the well-preserved fossil skeleton of a juvenile plesiosaur (general info) --a marine reptile that swam the waters of the Southern Ocean roughly 70 million years ago. The fossil remains represent one of the most-complete plesiosaur skeletons ever found and is thought to be the best-articulated fossil skeleton ever recovered from Antarctica. The creature would have inhabited Antarctic waters during a period when the Earth and oceans were far warmer than they are today. James E. Martin (homepage), curator of vertebrate paleontology and coordinator of the paleontology program at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's Museum of Geology, announced today the plesiosaur bones will be unveiled at the museum on December 13, 2006. The long-necked, diamond-finned plesiosaurs are probably most familiar as the legendary inhabitants of Scotland's Loch Ness*, although scientifi
