Virtual business 2.0.
Not long ago, companies were racing to set up storefronts and showrooms in computer-generated environments such as Second Life. Few found big profits.
But commercial interest in such simulations seems to be morphing, not diminishing. Rather than selling goods and services to users -- who typically take on animated shapes known as avatars -- companies are turning to

IBM Sensors Link Real World and Virtual World from 3pointd.comUgoTrade has a lengthy write-up of some of the work IBM has been doing in the virtual world of Second Life lately. [Via IBM’s Rob Smart.] The blog entry is all about creating links between the real world and the virtual world, so that sensor data and other information can be visualized in Second Life on a real-time basis. In the screenshot above, “The blue balls with white designs represent active Bluetooth devices. The pyramids scattered about the floor represent other people working, with the color designating things like physical presence or telepresence,” according to UgoTrade. This is just one kind of application that could start to make Second Life a much more useful place. I’d love to see entities and conditions
Now you can be in two places at once. One of those places will have to be inside a virtual world, it’s true, but as connections between the virtual and the physical become more numerous, how long until that’s not such a big difference?
When I wrote about the Platforms of the Web, some of the potential connections I explored were between one platform, the mobile web, and another, virtual worlds. The first steps toward exploring those connections have now been taken, as efforts begun earlier than last year are being launched as consumer products.

MTV will be expanding it’s growing video game empire with an all new “virtual world” game . . . or “multi-user 3D online world” to use their term.
10Tacle Studios is the developer and the hub world (not yet named) will be full of various mini-games you can play, presumably either alone or with groups of friends (though how many is still up in the air). MTV will be guiding the overall look and feel of the online space and it will contain the standard communication and gaming services that you’d come to expect in an online world, with the addition of archived music videos and other programs that only the MTV empire could provide.
“Starting in 2008, the multi-user 3D online world will give Internet users access to, among other things, the classic content offered by the MTV Group, while offering a large number of online games. 10TACLE STUDIOS AG, a European developer and videogame producer, will handle the technical implementation and operation o
So many companies make the promise of reinvention through the useful aid of their products or services. Reinvention of your home, your lifestyle and, most popular, reinvention of you. Let’s face it the idea of creating a new you tickles the best of us and often these attempts are met with bruised ego’s, a rash or a rather dodgy hairdo but now there is an easy way... creating a new virtual you.
Levi’s has just launched the first social networking and public chat-branded virtual world (LevisWorld) in Hong Kong and China. A virtual world is simply a computer simulated environment that its users inhabit and interact via avatars, which are active and available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The avatar is you, or indeed a version of you - introducing the opportunity to reinvent yourself completely.
Users enter a virtual world, or "metaverse", where they can network, hang out, dress up and take on different identities. For marketing this means the creat

Wow, it’s amazing how golf is evolving especially there’s ways to turn pro virtually! Maybe I will try this route since I haven’t made to the PGA Tour yet…
SkillGround is a site where you can play original video games for cash money and prizes, and they’ve just added another game to their arsenal. UTour Golf is a realistic online golf game that will allow players to play in golf tournaments or head to head for cash winnings - or just for fun, but what’s the point of that? Knowing the ferocious competitive streak in my golfer friends, this is going to cost them a lot of money. Players will be able to chat, track stats, and join games based on their skills, from Rookie to Legend.
“UTour Golf will change the landscape of online gaming by bringing a pro golf simulation with cash play to the mass market. The game looks and feels like the real thing, and is designed to be intuitive for players of all skill levels - everyone can play and anyone can

I used to be big into Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, and Everquest 2. It always amazed me how much time I would start to invest in these virtual worlds. Real world time would slip away it seemed almost as fast as the much speedier time of a day in an online world. That is eventually why I stopped playing these games all together. I just didn’t have the time to put in to keep up with the guys that had hours and hours available to invest each day.
The idea of real world money in trade for MMO gold starts to become incredibly attractive for those lacking the time needed to really get ahead. Everyone seems to make out in the end… the people who are putting the work and time into the virtual world can make real world money while those without real time can invest cash to advance their MMO character.

In today’s microenterprise world where many times there is only one person actually in the business, delegation takes on a whole new meaning. Typically even a microenterprise has to perform the same functions as a larger business but they tend to use outside suppliers and partners to perform and manage those functions. For example: Most of us don’t host our own websites or email or e-newsletter systems, we delegate that to an outside provider. If we process credit cards we might use Paypal or another merchant account supplier along with our bank.Almost all of us outsource our legal needs to a local firm or possibly even one of the new online legal firms that provides legal support for a fixed monthly subscription fee. Many of us outsource various marketing functions, like public relations, offline communications like brochures and advertising or probably even some online items like banner design, web design and copywriting.Ok, I just listed IT, Finance, Legal and Marketing as quick e
What is Second Life?
Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 6,894,029 people from around the globe.
From the moment you enter the World you'll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Once you've explored a bit, perhaps you'll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business.
You'll also be surrounded by the Creations of your fellow residents. Because residents retain the rights to their digital creations, they can buy, sell and trade with other residents.
The Marketplace currently supports millions of US dollars in monthly transactions. This commerce is handled with the in-world unit-of-trade, the Linden dollar, which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online Linden Dollar exchanges.
Welcome to Second Life. We look forward to seeing you in-world.

Now the largest UK lottery syndicate in the UK, the Virtual World Direct (VWD) eLottery Syndicate provides 88 lines per week on the UK Lotto for £5.In fact, it is really a 'collection' of syndicates as every 49 members are a group, with their own set of numbers for each UK Lotto main draw. Each group is allocated a unique set of 5 numbers - which together with every possible 6th number - are entered into every Wednesday and Saturday draw. The result is 88 chances of winning per week, and if you match your 5 you hit the jackpot. The 6th ball is guaranteed. The e-Lottery Syndicate is not the cheapest UK Lotto syndicate, but you do get the peace of mind of a professional and reliable company. The overheads of staff and premises are always going to cost more than 'Bob in Accounts with his Excel lottery spreadsheet' (although you can do some pretty nifty things with a lottery spreadsheet!). And these guys do have proper offices and a full team of staffSo at £5 per week this is set at a

It's been a very technical day. I finally made the leap to the new Blogger beta template. You won't notice much difference, but the sidebar had to be redone, for the most part. But how do I get code onto the post template? I have to wade through the new code and cross my fingers. What is this new code called? I could at least google some help if I knew. The problem is there's no entry for code in the post widget, and no widget for the purpose otherwise, and the posts themselves will not accept java. Manana fer sher I'll figure it out.It was also a very purgative day, and not just because of my still runny nose. I'm back in get-rid-of-it mode. I conquered several boxes in the office. More than that, I can actually see quite a bit of floor, though not much desk surface. I'm trying to get it cleared out so T and I can share a desk and free up some studio space. The biggest news is the buyer for our NYC apartment signed the contract tonight.
Today on Oprah, families were put to the challenge to see if they could go without television, computers, video games, long showers, eating out, and purchasing new products over a seven day period.
