McCain Campaign Finance Violations Go to the FEC
The DNC is suing the Federal Election Commission over its failure to investigate John McCain's campaign finance practices. From NPR this morning: When McCain's campaign was about to go broke over the winter, he got a line of credit from a bank. He had already applied for public financing. But when his fundraising got better, McCain declared that he was withdrawing from the public financing program. The DNC lawsuit says he can't do that — because he had already made financial use of his access to public funds. The Democrats point out that McCain's campaign manager guaranteed to the bank that McCain could qualify for public money in the future. Though McCain never made use of any public money, he is technically still signed up for the public funding program for the primaries. Last month, F

He pointed out that having people appear in MLS photos are a violation for his MLS. Actually it’s the same thing in Connecticut, and I suspect the majority of other MLS’s. Likely for simple reasons of the fear of lawsuit of people not having signed model releases etc. Plus the very obvious fair housing concerns come to mind too. So not only are the agents putting photos of people in listing photos destroying the photo as a sales piece, they’re willing to risk some hefty fines to do so. It’s so mindlessly inept, that I can’t dwell on it too long. I just post the silly photos, laugh and move on. Bookmark this article:

When Bad Real Estate Photos Become Ethical Violations
I know I’m constantly showing bad real estate photos on the blog. I’m enjoying mocking and spinning them into something humorous. But at the same time I’m also more than a little disgruntled about them. I’ve been tossing and turning about this for a couple weeks now. I’m getting to the point where I think that because bad photos act to drive potential buyers away from asking for showings and writing offers, that bad photos are in fact a serious ethical violation by listing agents. One that should or could result in lawsuits, fines, revoking of licensure. Jim Duncan mentions similar thoughts in passing. “The fact that there is only one picture in the MLS should be a violation in and of itself as well.” Assume that a seller has a good home, reasonably priced and generally market ready. Then the listing agent shoots terrible photos and then uploads those photos to the Multiple Listing System (MLS). Then those photos get spread far a

New Reports Condemn Human Rights Violations in Cuba, Venezuela
Washington -- The United States and the inter-American community are united in condemning human rights repression in Cuba and Venezuela. The State Department said in a new human rights report, released April 5, that Cuba had at least 283 political prisoners and detainees at the end of 2006. The report said thousands more citizens in Cuba served sentences in 2006 for “dangerousness,” in the absence of any criminal activity. In addition, the report said beatings and abuse of detainees and prisoners, including human rights activists, were carried out with impunity, and that harsh and life-threatening prison conditions included denial of medical care. The Cuban government uses the concept of "dangerousness" in an attempt to justify detaining its citizens, saying these people supposedly have a “special inclination” to commit crimes. In a separate development, a human rights body of the Organization of American States (OAS) says in its own new report that the Cuban people endure a

Playboy editor-in-chief found not guilty of indecency violations
The editor-in-chief of Playboy Indonesia was found innocent Thursday of violating indecency laws in the world's most populous Muslim nation and will not face time behind bars, judges ruled Thursday. Erwin Arnada had faced a maximum punishment of more than 2 1/2 years in prison in a case closely watched by Islamic hardliners, who have loudly protested since the toned-down version of the American magazine hit newsstands in Indonesia one year ago. But Efran Basyuning, presiding judge of the South Jakarta District Court, said pictures of scantily dressed women, some in underwear with their breasts partially exposed, could not, under criminal laws, "be categorized as pornography."Earlier:Indonesia News Blog: Is Indonesian Playboy indecent?Indonesia News Blog: Playboy Indonesia editor could face two years ...

Rumsfeld authorized violations of the Geneva Conve...
As Andrew Sullivan reports, the evidence keeps mounting that former U.S. Secretary of Defense is a war criminal. In a Reuters article, Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski says "she was ready to testify against Rumsfeld, if a suit filed by civil rights groups in Germany over Abu Ghraib led to a full investigation."
