On Tuesday, my dad had bypass surgery at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. As a dutiful daughter who loves her daddy (girls always love their daddy), I got up at 4:00 to get him to the hospital by 6:00 so he could prepare for surgery. My youngest sister, my dad’s brother and sister and an adopted “son” all waited together for a good word from the doctor.
If you have to go to a hospital, St Vincents is one of the finest. The staff was very kind and kept us informed throughout our wait. The large surgical waiting room was furnished with recliners, plasma televisions and a computer station for those who need to work or email. Large round tables convenient for working, having lunch or playing cards, as my family did.
Each of us found a way to pass the time. As a camera carrying “blogger”, I, of course spent my waiting time touring the beautiful grounds of St. Vincent, drinking coffee, taking pictures, drinking coffee and waiting.

All you need to know about Marry Me is that it is a huge, diverse, beautiful, and amazing record. For those who don't know, St. Vincent is essentially Annie Clark making just about every audible sound on the record. Where should I start...This is not your typical singer songwriter fare. Not in the least. It is adventurous pop music that has much more in common with The Beatles or even Radiohead than just some girl with a guitar. Annie Clark's gorgeous vocals drive her songs forward and are equal parts Beth Orton, Bjork, and Tori Amos and range from hushed and breathy to sweet and soulful. Her melodies often sound old and familiar. Not retro and recycled like the straight up doo-wop theft of Amy Winehouse, but something timeless.Musically Marry Me full of inventive and darkly quirky arrangements that draw upon influences ranging from jazz standards, space rock, classical, Eastern music, and the skronk of the avant garde. M. Ward has been championed by Howe Gelb, who released Ward's 2000 debut disc Duet for Guitars #2 on his Ow Om label, and Conor Oberst, who brought Ward on the road with Bright Eyes. In 2001, Ward earned some small measure of acclaim for his sophomore effort, End of Amnesia, and if the Portland, Oregon-based songwriter keeps making records as inventive and thoroughly rewarding as this third album, he won't be unknown long. Full of snappy, loping pop tunes interwoven with mellow instrumental passages, Transfiguration of Vincent shows Ward to be a terrific folk and blues guitarist, a perceptive, witty storyteller, and--in tossing piano, percussion, harmonica, and various other instruments into mixes that never feel the least bit cluttered--an imaginative arranger. He's also an expressive vocalist, whether in a winsome upper register that recalls Ben Harper or his sandy-throated midrange. There's not a weak moment on this dark-horse gem of a disc.

The debut album from Annie Clark, under the guise of St. Vincent is due out next Tuesday from the Beggars group. The album is not quite as strong as I had hoped it would be, although the best songs are really amazing. I just did not feel that as a whole it lived up to my admittedly high expectations after hearing the first single, “Now Now”.
That being said, it is certainly worth picking up and judging for yourself, and from all accounts, it may be an even better idea to catch Annie live if she is coming through your city. Tons of tour dates below to check out, be sure to take in her show if you can.

Before I could start PTS (Preliminary Training School) in 1975 I had to earn some sought of living. So I got a job as a wardsman at St Vincent's.
