Soldiers who suffered appalling injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan were verbally abused as they swam in a public swimming pool.
During a weekly rehabilitation session, 15 severely wounded servicemen with missing limbs and sever burns were heckled and jeered at by members of the public.
One woman screamed at the soldiers telling them they had no right to be there.
She became increasingly abusive, screaming that it was wrong for staff to rope off a lane exclusively for the injured personnel from the nearby Headley Court rehabilitation centre.
The swimmer, thought to be in her 30s, is understood to have said:
“I pay to come here and swim – you lot don’t.”
The soldiers, who use the pool as part of a water therapy course, were quickly ordered out by their instructor to avoid further embarrassment.
The Headley Court Rehabilitation Centre treats 180 injured servicemen who have to make a half-hour trip to Leatherhead to use the pool.

This is so shameful, words almost escape me. Other than reporting the facts, I can do little but scream “Fuck You” as loud as possible in the direction of our country's capital.Every few weeks reports leak out about the treatment of Iraq War Veterans. It is bad enough that the nation is much more concerned about American Idol and Dancing With the Stars than what is happening in that god forsaken land, but the way we often treat the Sons and Daughters of the Republic is despicable. For the most part the country is silent about the the troops or mistake support for wearing flags on lapels or some blind support for the moron currently occupying the White House (who incidentally has never attended the funeral of one of our warriors killed in Iraq). But, I guess the public can not be blamed. When the war broke out, we were told to just go shopping, and leave the mess to the professionals.Increasingly, inorder to recruit those professionals, the government has had to be inventive.

The U.S. Army is testing the brains of troops to be newly deployed in Iraq to help them "baseline" a soldier's cognitive abilities and thus make it easier to diagnose and treat possible head injuries incurred later while stationed in Iraq. The program is mandatory at the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky and will spread elsewhere in the coming months. This program is not as it appears.
First, some background. Traumatic brain injury, or "TBI" is one of the worst and most common traumas coming out of Iraq, earning it the title of "signature injury" with an estimated one in five expected to come back with some form of brain injury. Symptoms are difficult to pinpoint for the patient and evaluation and testing is challenging for doctors. In fact, sometimes there are no symptoms initially, yet the damage is very severe nonetheless. For the first time, there are more head injuries than abdominal injuries.

That's the advice from state officials in response to the increasing numbers of confirmed rabid bats in Illinois this year.
"Because we have infringed upon the wild populations considerably, [pet] exposure is always a possibility," said Cheryl Johnson, supervising veterinarian for Morgan Park Animal Hospital. "It's really foolish not to have them vaccinated."

Tragically high suicide rates among Iraq War Vets have been a topic of this blog before. More recent information in the press have been about high rates among Vets in Great Britain.
Now we may have some answers and a suggested course of action. A recent report by the Veterans Affairs Department's inspector general finds that at least one factor is that Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are at increased risk of suicide because Veterans Administration health clinics do not have 24-hour mental health care available.
Sometimes I forget that, unlike Minnesota, most states don't have 24 hour emergency mental health care. Here such care is manditory, required by state law and funded by a variety of sources, including Federal Medicaid, state grants, and county fee for service contracts.
It found that nearly three years after the VA adopted a comprehensive strategy of mental health care, services were inconsistent throughout its network of 1,400 clinics. Many facilities lacked

With vietnam the hippies and others protested the war and a good number of vets joined to protest as well, but sadly thats not whats happening with Iraq.
Have we honestly let this happen? Are these brave men fighting two battles now? It seems that the only people making a difference are the Iraq war vets. From the countless stories of the government neglect towards vets, to the total media blockaid on what they have to say, and now this.
And then theres the sexual abuse on the female soldiers like the Suzanne Swift case. Raped by her own army, the men she was trained to trust and then in a traumatic time after coming home she goes awol. Who could blame her? Now she’s back and fearing being courtmarshaled and being sent back to Iraq with the same men that raped her. Visit her page and help in anyway you can.

A South African news service is reporting that Royal Canin just voluntarily recalled a premium dog food product sold only in veterinary clinics. It is not clear to me whether or not this brand, Vets Choice, is sold only in South Africa.
Royal Canin deserves kudos for this one. They immediately issued the recall just on the suspicion of trouble. Royal Canin, as you know, just recalled a prescription canned cat food sold only through veterinary clinics in Canada because a connection was made to the melamine-tainted wheat.
Dog food: Company warns owners

Johannesburg - The makers of Vets Choice dog food have advised pet owners to stop feeding their animals the product and to consult their vets if they are concerned about the health of their pets.
This comes after the company, Royal Canin, received calls from consumers and veterinarians who have advised the company of 19 cases of dogs becoming ill.

Homeless vets need your help! Need outstrips beds for homeless vets By THOMAS WATKINS, Associated Press WriterNow that warmer weather is arriving, the giant tent that was a winter home for 150 veterans is being packed away."For most of us, it's back on the streets," says Marvin Britton, a former military policeman who's been crisscrossing the country since leaving the Army in 1971 following three combat tours in Vietnam. The battered tent, pitched on a Navy parking lot, is reflective of a problem that almost certainly will worsen as more troops come home from Iraq and Afghanistan and leave active duty — there just aren't enough beds for vets who end up homeless."We all feel like we are fighting against a clock," said Toni Reinis, who runs New Directions Inc., a Los Angeles substance abuse center providing residential and outpatient care for homeless vets.No one knows for sure how many homeless there are — estimates vary from hundreds of thousands to millions.According to the Dep
If I did not live in a relatively small cage in a tiny apartment, I would think the Tall One is some kind of millionaire or celebity. She has different doctors for almost every part of her body! She goes to one doctor when she is coughing or has a cold, to another one for her sprained ankle, and today she even went to a special doctor just for her teeth! The last one I absolutely can't understand. I don't even know why she has teeth in the first place. Miss Prissy and I get along just fine without them. Anyway, the Tall One went to her tooth doctor today, and she said some of her teeth needed fillings and had to be drilled on. Now, why does a tooth need to be filled? Is it hollow? The Tall One says the tooth doctor is nice, but she came home during lunch time with half of her face numb. She looked funny. She couldn't even smile or blink right! At least she had enough common sense to stay home this afternoon and not go to that place she calls work. Everybody there would have laughed at
140 Homeless Vets Get Help, Morale BoostEx-Marine's inspirational speech wraps up Stand DownBy Angelica Martinez, amartinez@ VenturaCountyStar.comAfter providing new jeans, shoes and other necessities to about 140 homeless veterans over three days, the 12th annual Ventura County Stand Down concluded Sunday afternoon with an inspirational message from one of its own.Mark Graves, a former corporal in the Marine Corps, stood before the group of homeless vets at "Seabee Camp Hope" -- nickname of the Stand Down site at the National Guard Armory in Ventura -- and said, "I've lived the life that all of you guys live."Twelve years ago, Graves was homeless, with rotten teeth and other medical problems. He had no identification to get medical help or to even begin looking for a job.He said his visit to the Stand Down back then was the first step in turning his life around, an achievement many of the vets Sunday said they dream of making. After his return from Vietnam in the late 1960s, Graves s

Post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing intense trauma where life is threatened in terrifying ways. This disorder has life long consequences as I've talked about before. AP Wire reported on a former Senator who is a Vietnam vet who has had a recurence of PTSD because of repeated exposure to images of war in Iraq.
Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, who has battled bouts of depression since losing three limbs in Vietnam, is being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. Cleland, who represented Georgia in the Senate from 1997 to 2003, said he believes the condition - cases of which are increasing rapidly among Vietnam war veterans - was in part triggered by the ongoing violence in Iraq.
"I realize my symptoms are avoidance, not wanting to connect with anything dealing with the (Iraq) war, tremendous sadness over the casualties that are taken, a real identification with that. ... I've tried to disconnect and disassociate from the media. I don't watc
