 I find this story kind of sad actually. Boston had a Veteran’s Day parade, after the parade there was going to be a ceremonial laying of wreaths for every war from WWI all the way up to the Iraq war. That is when the ceremony got ugly. A group called Veterans For Peace teamed up with Code Pink to interupt the ceremony. In a protest of the Iraq war, the Veterans for peace shouted anti-war slogans and would not stop when asked by the police.  The Veterans For Peace and their supporters say this is a free speech issue, and they had their say. In my family, it's a time to relax, but also a time to think about all of the people who have served in our armed forces, who are still serving and who have died. My Dad was a veteran - a WWII veteran. And although he didn’t work with any military dogs, he was a dog lover, and he would be pleased to know that there are people who remember the dogs who have worked alongside our soldiers through the years. The United States War Dog Association was established in 2000 in order to remember canine veterans and establish monuments in various places throughout the United States. They are also working to establish a US postage stamp in honor of the dogs. Although the majority of military dogs have been German Shepherds, Dobermans and Labradors have also been trained as military dogs. These highly trained dogs have worked, and died, along side American soldiers ever since and tributes to some of them, and their handlers, can be seen on the US War Dogs Assn. website. OK, Children, do you know what today is? That's right! Dia de los Muertos! For the second year in a row, my childrens' school, Selby Grove elementary in Pico Rivera, did nothing for Veteran's Day while celebrating that great American holiday "Dia De Los Muertos," a Mexican festival having to do with one's dead ancestors. My daughter spent two weeks on her DDLM project, but didn't write one letter to a veteran or read one story of military heroism in class. Heck, I'd have gone over if they'd have asked. Now, wouldn't you think that an American public school would emphasize a unifying secular holiday over an ethnicity-based, quasi-religious observance from another country? It's not even that "Dia De Los Mertos" bothers me. It's just that I hate to see a rare opportunity for national reflection go to waste. Oh, well. I guess that's what parents are for: to teach American history and patriotism.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking for, and got themselves some linebacker help on Sunday, as the team has signed unrestricted free agent LB Chris Claiborne to a one-year deal.  The former first rounder was released by the Giants last October and was not in a training camp this summer.  Reports say that he had a strong workout with the Jags, and that the deal likely was for the NFL minimum base salary of $720,000.  Part of the reason for the signing is for depth, the other is to help out in a pinch, as right now Clint Ingram is hurt with an ankle injury.  He did not play in the teams preseason game Thursday vs the Packers. Claiborne was the Lions first round pick in 1999, and last season spent four weeks with the Giants, playing in two games and reocrding two tackles.  He has played with the Lions, Vikings, Rams, Giants, and now the Jags.  In eight seasons, Claiborne has 569 tackles, 15 sacks, eight interceptions, 30 passes defensed, and eight forced fumbles. With the departure of OG Pete Kendall, the Jets are looking to add a veteran as a potential starter or depth. J.P. Pelzman of the Bergen Record is reporting that the Jets may be interested in OG Keydrick Vincent. Because the Jets didn’t get a guard in return from the Redskins, they likely will look to trade for one or see if anyone gets released before the season starts. A possibility could be right guard Keydrick Vincent of Baltimore, who is in his seventh season and started 12 games last year. The Ravens appear to have a surplus of guards, as first-round pick Ben Grubbs currently is starting and second-year player Chris Chester is second-string, with Vincent currently third-string.

NBA veteran Kurt Thomas has been traded to the Seattle SuperSonics by the Phoenix Suns. The trade is that the NBA team Seattle SuperSonics get Thomas in exchange for a conditional second round choice in next years NBA draft. Seattle also have to give the first round choices for 2008 and 2010 NBA drafts. Kurt Thomas is 35 years old so perhaps he will bring some experience and leadership to his NBA teamates in the Seattle SuperSonics, especially NBA freshmen Kevin Durant and Jeff Green.   The Houston Texans have signed unrestricted free-agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell (San Diego Chargers).  McCardell played last season with the Chargers, recording 36 receptions for 437 receiving yards, but zero touchdowns. He missed two games last season because of a calf injury. San Diego released McCardell in early March. Houston will use McCardell as a starter opposite Pro-Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson. Wide receivers Kevin Walter and Bethel Johnson were two options for the starting job before the team inked McCardell. Does he have the wheels to continue playing? An Iraq war veteran has received Oakland Community College's Fred M. Mester Excellence in Paralegal Studies Award. Mandeline Dreasky was a member of the 1775th Military Police Company out of Pontiac. She served in Kuwait and Iraq providing convoy escorts. In 2004, she enrolled in a paralegal program, but her studies were interrupted when her husband Sgt. Duane Dreasky suffered serious burn injuries in Iraq. He subsequently spent eight months in hospitals and rehab in Germany and Texas before he died in July 2006. Mandeline later returned to school, where she set an example for others in earning all A's.
