      A war veteran adrift

He also claims Mr Brown held money back for his own premiership. Bridging the veteran-and-new-teacher divide
This from the Los Angeles Times blog, The Homeroom:I want to come clean about something that has bothered me since I started to teach: Veteran teachers get a bad rap.And now comes the rather difficult part, explaining why this bad rap exists. I will generalize to best illustrate the point. The reason younger teachers are usually suspect of their veteran counterparts has nothing to do with actually seeing these teachers at work. Instead, it has to do with their sense of cynicism and skeptical disregard for proposed change. As a corollary, most new teachers approach the school system as idealistically as you could possibly imagine. Wet behind the ears, a few too many feel-good-teacher-films under their belt, newer teachers are here to change the world. We are a brash generation of know-it-all

Kadera, a former electrical engineer, was driving his 14 year-old son, Isaac, to a tennis match when they got into deep traffic and couldn‘t move. Kadera thought about what he could do and came up with another way to arrive at the match…fly. He had 1949 Piper Clipper, since he was once part of the Navy with 40 years of flying experience, and decided that it would be a convenient way to get to the area, fast. The only problem with that idea was that he had to land, illegally at the golf course, their final destination. Veterans for Peace Disrupt Veteran’s Day Ceremony in Boston
I find this story kind of sad actually. Boston had a Veteran’s Day parade, after the parade there was going to be a ceremonial laying of wreaths for every war from WWI all the way up to the Iraq war. That is when the ceremony got ugly. A group called Veterans For Peace teamed up with Code Pink to interupt the ceremony. In a protest of the Iraq war, the Veterans for peace shouted anti-war slogans and would not stop when asked by the police.  The Veterans For Peace and their supporters say this is a free speech issue, and they had their say. The ironic part here is that they didn’t allow the people who held the ceremony to continue with their ceremony in effect stifling the free speech of the people holding the ceremony.  Needless to say, this infuriated many of the veterans who were there to witness the ceremonies in their honor. “This is not a political parade,” said Lawler, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and former Boston police officer, “it’s to show

      Happy Veteran's Day
For some people, Veteran's Day is a "shopping holiday." In my family, it's a time to relax, but also a time to think about all of the people who have served in our armed forces, who are still serving and who have died. I would also like to give thanks to all of the veterans who are returning home from overseas with permanent disabilities, many thousands of whom will never return to their "day jobs" that they held and supported their family with before being called up. Because our field medicine and emergency care is so much better than in the past, more soldiers survive battlefield injury than ever before. While this is most definitely a good thin, this means we have more disabled vets than ever before returning home.I am vehemently opposed to our occupation of Iraq, and believe that our current administration is about as morally bankrupt as any could be, making decisions involving the welfare of our nation and of our troops for personal and political gain rather than national se

And although he didn’t work with any military dogs, he was a dog lover, and he would be pleased to know that there are people who remember the dogs who have worked alongside our soldiers through the years. The United States War Dog Association was established in 2000 in order to remember canine veterans and establish monuments in various places throughout the United States. They are also working to establish a US postage stamp in honor of the dogs. Although the majority of military dogs have been German Shepherds, Dobermans and Labradors have also been trained as military dogs. These highly trained dogs have worked, and died, along side American soldiers ever since and tributes to some of them, and their handlers, can be seen on the US War Dogs Assn. website. Quick: Should American schools celebrate Veteran's Day or Dia del los Muertos?
OK, Children, do you know what today is? That's right! Dia de los Muertos! For the second year in a row, my childrens' school, Selby Grove elementary in Pico Rivera, did nothing for Veteran's Day while celebrating that great American holiday "Dia De Los Muertos," a Mexican festival having to do with one's dead ancestors. My daughter spent two weeks on her DDLM project, but didn't write one letter to a veteran or read one story of military heroism in class. Heck, I'd have gone over if they'd have asked. Now, wouldn't you think that an American public school would emphasize a unifying secular holiday over an ethnicity-based, quasi-religious observance from another country? It's not even that "Dia De Los Mertos" bothers me. It's just that I hate to see a rare opportunity for national reflection go to waste. Oh, well. I guess that's what parents are for: to teach American history and patriotism.

      Asymmetric thoughts for Veteran's Day
      1. American veterans have participated in both the defense of the nation and, in some cases, wars of aggression (open a page of Howard Zinn at random).** Without both types of actions, the United States, quite literally, wouldn't exist. 2. We honor veterans because we're grateful to people who do difficult things for our benefit. Most people reward such actions with money, but for those in certain jobs, where an appropriate financial compensation is impractical or impossible, appreciation is part of their paycheck. It's why Blackwater guards get more money than G.I. Joe and we don't have "Mercenary Day." It's why we have "Mother's Day" and not "Daycare Worker Day" (although I appreciate them as well). 3. It's both a duty (for those capable) and a privilege to serve in the military. I thank God that I'm able to help the country that's given my parents and children such wonderful (and rare, in the world) opportunities. God bless the USA. God bless those across the world wh

Wife of A Deployed Veteran Partners With Video Gamers
By: Robert Thomson An unlikely partnership between the wife of a deployed National Guardsmen and video gamers across America has been created to support the troops. Molly Johnson, who is best likened to a human dynamo, has been working tirelessly to involve video gamers in the support of U.S. servicemen and their families. “I know that early adopters create most of the consumer generated media on the internet,” stated Ms. Johnson. “Video gamers are certainly early adopters and I need them to spread the word online that our troops need everyone’s back-up. Most of our soldiers abroad are on the internet during their free time and I want them to see that America is supporting them.”The internet is the 21st century equivalent to Armed Forces Radio. Many servicemen overseas rely on internet access for news, information and contact with home. Johnson’s strategy involves mobilizing video gamers, who do in fact generate a tremendous amount of the content one sees on the internet. G

US Army Veteran cuts down Mexican flag flying over American flag (video)
So I did a Google search of the man Jim Brauser to see if there was any other info and guess what I come across...some slimeball moonbat at Democratic Underground trying to get people to call the Reno police and report the guy to get him arrested. Things like this just reinforce my opinion of what a bunch of America hating scumbags the left are. Disgusting Democratic Underground thread. Hat tip to Wake Up America for posting this video of a man cutting down a Mexican Flag that was flying atop an American flag. I say Bravo! ~RJH

The two-time Pro Bowl selection was cut by the Chargers after last season and nearly signed with the Redskins in July, but opted instead for Houston because he wanted to play in his hometown. It looks much different now than the first time I put it on—it is faded from 12 months of desert sand and sun. The elbows and knees are worn from lying in the street. The boots are tattered from kicking down doors and walking over cities of rubble. As I put it on for the first time since I returned from Iraq, I finally felt as if I wa

Jaguars Sign Veteran Linebacker Chris Claiborne
The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking for, and got themselves some linebacker help on Sunday, as the team has signed unrestricted free agent LB Chris Claiborne to a one-year deal.  The former first rounder was released by the Giants last October and was not in a training camp this summer.  Reports say that he had a strong workout with the Jags, and that the deal likely was for the NFL minimum base salary of $720,000.  Part of the reason for the signing is for depth, the other is to help out in a pinch, as right now Clint Ingram is hurt with an ankle injury.  He did not play in the teams preseason game Thursday vs the Packers. Claiborne was the Lions first round pick in 1999, and last season spent four weeks with the Giants, playing in two games and reocrding two tackles.  He has played with the Lions, Vikings, Rams, Giants, and now the Jags.  In eight seasons, Claiborne has 569 tackles, 15 sacks, eight interceptions, 30 passes defensed, and eight forced fumbles. He has appeared i

      Jets Looking At Veteran Guard
With the departure of OG Pete Kendall, the Jets are looking to add a veteran as a potential starter or depth. J.P. Pelzman of the Bergen Record is reporting that the Jets may be interested in OG Keydrick Vincent. Because the Jets didn’t get a guard in return from the Redskins, they likely will look to trade for one or see if anyone gets released before the season starts. A possibility could be right guard Keydrick Vincent of Baltimore, who is in his seventh season and started 12 games last year. The Ravens appear to have a surplus of guards, as first-round pick Ben Grubbs currently is starting and second-year player Chris Chester is second-string, with Vincent currently third-string.

Seattle also have to give the first round choices for 2008 and 2010 NBA drafts. Kurt Thomas is 35 years old so perhaps he will bring some experience and leadership to his NBA teamates in the Seattle SuperSonics, especially NBA freshmen Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. Veteran WR McCardell Signs with Texans
The Houston Texans have signed unrestricted free-agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell (San Diego Chargers).  McCardell played last season with the Chargers, recording 36 receptions for 437 receiving yards, but zero touchdowns. He missed two games last season because of a calf injury. San Diego released McCardell in early March. Houston will use McCardell as a starter opposite Pro-Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson. Wide receivers Kevin Walter and Bethel Johnson were two options for the starting job before the team inked McCardell. Does he have the wheels to continue playing? His days as a productive receiver have long been over, and the No. 2 in the Houston offense has been unable to produce quality numbers. Last season, WR Eric Moulds caught 57 passes for 557 yards, scoring only one touchdown for Houston in that role. As he will likely be starting for the Texans, don’t think McCardell will be keeping the double-teams away from former Hurricane standout Andre Johnson.  At the

Gotta Get Me Some of That Veteran Leadership
Isn't it touching when baseball veterans feel the need to impose their knowledge on talented young players who may not need it? Especially when one of them has never, ever been good at baseball? When Hunter Pence went 0-for-4 the other night, Craig Biggio pulled him aside and offered some advice. "Look, go back to the cage right now," he said. "Don't wait until tomorrow. You'll go back there mad and hit until you're exhausted. By the time you leave, it'll feel right again."Hunter Pence is batting .342, in his first season, at the age of 24. He's OPS-ing .948. Does he really need Mr. 3000 to send him back to the cage because he went 0-4 in one game? Obviously, whatever he's doing is working very well. Craig Biggio, on the other hand, is OPS-ing .701. Hey Craig, I know you're 41 and all, but get your ass back in that cage until you're OPS-ing .916 like you did in 1997 (which was a career high, and still worse than Pence is hitting in his rookie year). By the time you leave, it'l

Mandeline later returned to school, where she set an example for others in earning all A's.

Website Writing Tips From a Copy Veteran
Today's post is all about copywriting for your webpage. Often times, the difference between marketing success and failure online (and off) is copy. Here are some tips from copywriting veteran Pat Quinn... When I joined my first London ad agency 40-something years ago, the copywriting department was presided over by a lapsed genius who beat into me a number of immutable copy principles. These precepts, which are as valid now as they were then and which have helped me shift truckloads of product worldwide, apply to all types of promotional writing. They apply even more so to selling on the Internet, where do-it-yourself copy is the norm rather than the exception. In the old days, very few serious advertisers wrote their own material. Today, they do so as a matter of course simply because the technology allows it. Anyway, this little article is aimed at those who write their own web pages and also at those who hire a writer and may wish to check that he or she is working on the right

VFW sides with veteran facing discipline for wearing uniform at protestWASHINGTON - The nation’s largest veterans group on Friday urged the military to "exercise a little common sense" and call off its investigation of a group of Iraq war veterans who wore their uniforms during anti-war protests. "Trying to hush up and punish fellow Americans for exercising the same Democratic right we’re trying to instill in Iraq is not what we’re all about," said Gary Kurpius, national commander of the 2.4 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars. "Someone in the Marine Corps needs to exercise a little common sense and put an end to this matter before it turns into a circus," Kurpius said. A military panel in Kansas City, Mo., is holding a hearing on Monday to decide whether Marine Cpl. Adam Kokesh’s discharge status should be changed from honorable to "other than honorable" after he was photographed wearing fatigues _ with military insignia removed _ during a mock patrol with other vete

Marques Houston - VeteranReleased: March, 20, 2007Record Label: Universal MotownAt the age of 25, Marques Houston considers himself a veteran. Fair enough: roughly 15 years, from Immature's 1992 debut to Veteran, constitutes longevity in any field. It's also worth noting that Houston is one of very few R&B artists with mainstream appeal who first appeared during the early '90s. Though he has dressed this album as something of a significant occasion, it is not a great progression from 2005's Naked, but it is a progression nonetheless. There's a similar distribution of sexually forward roughneck tracks and heart-on-sleeve testimonies, with plenty of material that falls somewhere between the two extremes, but the overall quality of the songwriting and production work is greater than that of Naked and MH. After working beneath the surface, you can even hear Houston sound a little more like a mature adult -- "Pop That Booty" seems like a distant memory -- and he works the more romantic s
