Wall-E, Jesus, and Sunshine in Vermont

I passed the Greyhound station in Rutland, and I had to go to the bathroom extremely badly. But the station was closed due to torrential storms. So I walket through this dark alley and edned up, luckily enou

Today is Green Up Day in Vermont, the one day in spring reserved for road-side clean up by Vermont residents, all volunteer. The first Green Up Day, according to Green Up Vermont, was April 18, 1970 in response to reporter Robert S. Green Up Day has been going ever since. We did not participate this year because I was unavailable, but several area locals did. CJ and her Girl Scout troupe greened up Vermont last year. I recall doing it as a Girl Scout, too. I hadn't heard of Green Up Day prior to our troupe's participation, but it felt great knowing that picking up trash along the road made a difference. Vermont Could Get Higher Octane Beer if Gov. Douglas Signs Bill
The Vermont House and Senate have approved a bill that will allow specialty beers with an alcohol by volume above 8 percent to be sold in grocery and convenience stores. Rep. John Rodgers sponsored the bill which would improve the distribution of the beers in Vermont. Currently, only the 75 liquor stores in the state can sell beer above 8 percent alcohol by volume. This has cut sales of the beers. To become law, Gov. James Douglas must sign the bill. Otter Creek Brewing has indicated it plans to launch a new beer if the law in Vermont changes. Another brewer, Shaun Hill, says he plans to launch Hill Farmstead Brewery and focus on classic high gravity brewing styles.

Bond Market Collapse Worries Vermont Student-Loan Agency
By Brain Wallstin [03.12.08] - 1992 reads Normally, this is a slow time of year for the Winooski-based Vermont Student Assistance Corp., which loans hundreds of millions of dollars annually to parents and students looking to finance higher education. But the latest crisis on Wall Street has the state’s largest student lender scrambling to secure $190 million to meet the demand for loans it expects to make this fall. The apparent collapse last month of the auction-rate securities market, which VSAC relies on to finance its lending, poses no threat to students who have already borrowed, said Scott Giles, the agency’s vice president of policy, planning and research. However, it has threatened the short-term financial viability of VSAC, which currently lacks nearly hal

Tip #1: Avoid High Fees Did you know that there were fees associated with refinancing your Vermont home? Since refinancing is like getting a new mortgage, there will be similar fees involved. Most likely you will have to pay for appraisals, title searches, application processing, and more. Your lender should give you a good faith estimate on your closing costs, which will include fees, but you need to be prepared when you refinance. One of our other stops during our New England trip was in Bennington Vermont, visiting our friends Nicki and Lisa (you will remember them from our Ft. When in Bennington you must go to The Bennington Battle Monument The monument was built in the 1880's at the same location in 1777 during the war of independence, that the American colonists maintained a store of weapons and food, which the British knew was critical to capture in order to restock their own troops. Besides the history the Bennington Monument is a great place to look out over Bennington and see the landscape which at this time of year included many beautifully colored trees. You get to the top of the monument by going up in an elevator. It is cold up there so be sure to bring a jacket. What if we had and had been chosen? This family who needed the home more than we did to care for their son who suffers from numerous health problems would have not gotten the new home they received this week.I'm a little disappointed, though. In one news report, the show's producer said this was the only home makeover they would do in Vermont due to Vermont's demographics. Applying for the show was still an option for us until I heard that this week. It makes things clear. We and our new house really are solely in God's hands. But they always were. Now I feel it. But it is good.Besides, with our current finances we wouldn't be able to afford the taxes!Technorati Tags:  family ^ parenting ^ kids ^ house construction ^ building ^ Vitale ^ extreme makeover ^ home edition

University of Vermont to add Trans-Gender Restrooms on Campus
If you are a man, you use the men’s room. If you are a woman, you use the woman’s room. Simple, isn’t it? It doesn’t seem that complicated to me either. But some people don’t know what they are, or at least that is what I am told. It doesn’t seem that hard to figure out what equipment you have to me, but what do I know? Now the University of Vermont has decided if you don’t know what you are they will create a special bathroom for you. It also has gender-neutral bathrooms, a feature added to accommodate transgendered people, as well as those with some disabilities. The four single bathrooms in the new Dudley H. Davis Center — each with a toilet, sink, shower, and lockable door — cost about $2,500 a piece to build. Their wall signs identify each as “gender neutral restroom.” “It’s about inclusivity and accessibility and the importance of meeting all people’s needs, not just a few,” said Annie St

How Nor'easters Benefit Vermont Ski Areas
By Timothy Palmer-BensonNor'EastersNor'easters can occur in the eastern United States any time between October and April, when moisture and cold air are plentiful. They are known for dumping heavy amounts of snow and producing hurricane-force winds. A Nor'easter is named for the winds that blow in from the northeast and drive the storm up the east coast along the Gulf Stream, a band of warm water that lies off the Atlantic coast. Most Vermont resorts get hit with Nor'easters. Nor'easters tend to slow down as they come into eastern Quebec or New Brunswick. What is Lake Effect SnowLake effect and lake enhanced snow events are relatively common in the northeast, particularly at Sugarbush, Smugglers' Notch, Bolton Valley, Stowe and Jay Peak because of their proximity to Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and several other lakes and rivers in Ontario and Quebec. Lake effect snows are created when cold dry air passes over a large warmer body of water and picks up mois

Yoshi Japanese Restaurant and Mary's Vermont Dairy
I saw some good reviews on Yoshi Japanese Restaurant Yoshi Japanese Restaurantso I was excited to go. Lon, Andy, and I were all disappointed. The quality was a bit below average and the cuts were terribly ugly. The salmon pieces had a whole layer of fat left on and the yellowtail was an awful cut that made it unrecognizable. The salad that comes with each dinner is also really sad. The wilted greens and watered down dressing set the stage for the coming meal. While we were walking home, we spotted a Mary's DairyMary's Dairy. Lon bought a chocolate and cheesecake fudge that looked much better than it tasted. I asked the employee if the ice cream had food coloring in it and he said he didn't know. To play it safe, I only tried the cookies and cream and the Yin-Yang (milk chocolate with dark chocolate pieces), flavors I could reasonably assume were not colored. The cookies and cream was super sweet with cream over-powering the cookie part. Andy and I both got the Yin-Yang, surprisingly

Anheuser-Busch Signs Deal to Distribute Vodka from Vermont
With the Swedish government pushing forward with plans to exit the alcohol business, one of the rumored suitors for the Absolut brand had been Anheuser-Busch, America's largest brewer. The sale of Absolut has not yet been concluded, but the folks in St. Louis did not wait around to nab a vodka label. While it is not an equity purchase at the moment, Anheuser-Busch has cut a deal with Vermont Spirits for A-B to become the master U.S. distributor for the Vermont Gold, Vermont Gold Vintage and Vermont White super-premium vodkas.Vermont Spirits is a regional distiller selling in Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and other select markets. The company's products are fairly unique. Vermont Gold is an unflavored vodka made by distilling maple sugar, while Vermont White is triple distilled from pure milk sugar and Vermont spring water. Starting this month, A-B will begin distributing the brands, while Vermont Spirits will continue to market the vodkas. Under the deal, Anheuser-

Vermont Activists want to Secede from the USA
They want Vermont to secede from the United States — peacefully, of course.Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism. They’ve published a “Green Mountain Manifesto” subtitled “Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union.” They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791. You can read the full article here. I have only one thing to say to all Vermont residents who would want to stay in the USA if Vermont were ever to pull of this ridiculous idea. Actually it’s a plee. Please flee to Massachusetts and not New Hampshire. We already have enough of your refugees here screwing up our state. Besides we are new to the nanny state, Massa

Thursday: From Rhode Island to Burlington, Vermont
Oddly enough, in all the times I’ve made the trek from Rhode Island to Montreal, I’ve never actually stopped in Burlington, Vermont. This was no conscious decision on my part. Perhaps it was the victim of time constraints or just never taking the time to look at a map or … well I’m not really sure. But having talked about the small Vermont city with a few friends who’d partaken in higher education and … [ahem] higher education there, it peaked my curiosity. So this time around, K and I decided it was a perfect stopping point on our way up to the land of moose and hockey (no, I don’t really believe that stereotype about Canada. I know they have maple syrup there too). Burlington is a little more than half way between Rhode Island and Montreal. And it’s what you might expect of a small New England city - in the same vein as Portland, Maine or Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It’s quaint and easily walkable. The nearby lake brings

      Vermont and Bolivia Team Up!
E-Wire reported today that a co-operative of eco-friendly luxury furniture makers, Vermont Woods Studios, and forest management experts in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, have joined forces to save the Amazon. E-Wire writes “We’ve always had a passion for the tropical rainforest and it’s inhabitants,” said Vermont Woods Studios owner, Peggy Farabaugh. “We try to do our part to save the rainforest by ensuring our wood is certified as sustainably harvested by the Forest Stewardship Council, FSC, the worldwide gold standard for responsible forestry practices. The minute we saw LaChonta’s line of beautiful heirloom quality FSC certified outdoor furniture we knew our customers would love it! Since then we have worked extensively with LaChonta and are now the only company able to provide this eco luxury line of furniture to US and Canadian consumers via the Internet, and at very reasonable prices.” This seems like a good idea, but after reading the typo-filled

Tuesday 19th September: The grass is greener in Vermont
Bert Dodson in Vermont8" x 10" pencil and coloured pencil in Moleskine sketchbookcopyright Katherine TyrrellWhat's the ultimate challenge? Well my personal artistic 'top ten' has probably got to include doing a quick sketch over lunch of the man who wrote one of the best selling books about drawing - and then trying to colour it afterwards purely from memory! My sketch is of Bert Dodson, the author of "Keys to Drawing". This book, published by North Light Books, is on the shelves of many people keen on learning how to improve their drawing. It's certainly sat on my shelves for nearly 20 years ever since I was able to find time for art again after I finally came to the end of my long haul through post grad qualifications/degrees.When I planned the trip to New England I had no idea that Bert lived in Vermont within a 'day trip' driving distance of Nicole. I knew he had a new book coming out as we had corresponded off and on. Anyway, he emerged from under all the page proofs at
