Rumble: When you think of Venice: Food...
Many visitors to Italy will appreciate the food. Not the usual spaghetti or pizza, but the real Italian food: Italy excels in simple but real tasty food. I sell my soul for the sea food, prosciutto (raw ham), the cheeses,...Visiting Venice last weekend, reminded me that this town has its own traditions. Some of it, is embraced into Italian traditions, like tiramisu (which was 'born' in this region). Some say "gelato", Italian ice cream is better in Venice than anywhere else in Italy:.But the pastry shops, while not as abundant as those in Vienna, in the quality, taste and variety, are not to be found anywhere else in Italy: View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.

Rumble: When you think of Venice: Glass art
One more think many people think of, when talking about Venice: Venetian glass..!Venetian glass making tradition goes way back, but only got really known when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city’s mostly wood buildings, ordered glass makers to move their foundries to the island of Murano, in the Venetian archipelago in 1291. Murano's glass makers were soon the island’s most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glass makers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state and found their daughters married into Venice’s most affluent families. The catch was that glass makers weren't allowed to leave the Republic.Murano’s glass makers held a monopoly on quality glass making for centuries, developing or refining many

Rumble: When you think of Venice: Carnival
What else do you think of when hearing "Venice"? Pumuckl commented in a previous post saying: "Carnival"!And she is right! The carnival of Venice was first recorded in 1268, and has been a long tradition since then. Strolling through the alleys of Venice, we came across many shops where they sold the typical Venetian masks, made in leather or with the original papier-mâché technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration. They often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.A photo impression:View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.

Cool Is Uncool in Venice Beach
I've recently changed jobs (huzzah!), and have consequently switched from working in the industrial town of Vernon, south of downtown L.A. and home to 72 people and 7200 factories, to working in sunny, palm-filled, affluent Venice Beach.  Even though it's double the commute time, I'm still SO much happier working in a place where I can take walks after work and see the sun set behind the palms instead of seeing the trash blow across creepy warehouse parking lots.  There are pretty little shops, cafes and galleries and nice architecture and people with dogs and is altogether a charming place. However, there is one area in which I feel suddenly and extremely out of place: clothing!Back at the ol' grind, my designer coworkers all dressed in relatively chic fashion-ite clothes, with things l

Ok, unraveling of the secret: we were in Venice last weekend. ;-)Matt, one of the readers of The Road, commented a while ago that my blog was listed in the "travel" category of one of the blog directories while it seems more like a political blog.I agree that lately I have been posting more news flashes (often with a bit of political cynism, I admit). But in essence, this blog is neither one or the other... I write about things that happen around me. Sometimes I am in a critical mood, sometimes I am involved in my daily (aid) work environment, and sometimes I am travelling. So the contents of the posts change as my life changes. ;-) The next few posts will be about travelling. Promise!So.. Venice... OK.. Here is a question for you. Located right below Santa Monica and right above Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles, this is one community that still has a 60's type feel with street vendors and entertainers lining up along the boardwalk areas. Vendors include everything from artists to poets, musicians, comedians, political view booth and even occasional dancers and dj's. This is the only beach location in Southern California that allows any type of vender with a sellers permit to occupy and take up a space at the boardwalk to sell or entertain beach goers. Venice Beach is probably best known for some of the ecclectic personalities that frequent the area along with some of the unique murals and art painted around buildings

A Reduced Price Meal in Venice: Restaurant Giving Charity to Americans
How far has American standing in the world fallen during the Bush years?  This article about an Italian restaurant offering discounts to “poor Americans” suffering from economic woes is more symbolic than anything, but it made me think of how far we’ve come since 2000. These days, lots of Americans need help.  60 Minutes recently explained what happened when a charity group that gives free health care to people in remote areas of Latin America set up shop in Knoxville, TN: they had to turn people away as more showed up for free care than could be helped. Food stamp use is nearing a record–some 28 million Americans are expected to receive food stamps in the next year. The Bush economy is all about stagnant wages, poor employment growth, rising debt–both priv

Venice is no longer the supreme city of music
Venice is no longer the supreme city of music, as she was in the eighteenth century, when four celebrated conservatoires flourished there, when her choirs and instrumentalists were unrivalled, and when the priest Vivaldi, suddenly inspired with a melody in the middle of celebrating Mass, instantly rushed off to the Sacristy to scribble it down. Music, nevertheless, often sounds in the city. The strains of great symphonies rise, in the summer season, from breathless floodlit courtyards; twelvetone scales and electronic cadences ring from the International Festival of Contemporary Music, which recently brought Stravinsky himself to conduct an opera in the Scuola di San Rocco; the noble choir of St. Mark's, once trained by Monteverdi, sings seraphically from its eyrie among the high mosaics of the Basilica. The gondoliers no longer quote Tasso to one another, or sing old Venetian love songs (most of the popular tunes nowadays are from Naples or New York): but sometimes an ebullient young

      Venice The Sands of Time
It was from Byzantium that the taste for refinement and sensuous luxury came to Venice. "Artificiosa voluptate se mulcebat," a chronicler wrote of the Greek wife of an early doge. Her scents and perfumes, her baths of dew, her sweet-smelling gloves and dresses, the fork she used at table scandalized her subjects, plain Italian pioneer folk. The husband of this effeminate woman had Greek tastes also. He began, says the chronicler, "to work in mosaic," importing mosaic workers -- and marbles and precious stones -- to adorn his private chapel, St. Mark's, in the Eastern style that soon became second nature to the Venetians. The Byzantine mode, in Venice, lost something of its theological awesomeness. The stern, solemn figure of the Pantocrator who dominates the Greek churches with his frowning brows and upraised hand does not appear in St. Mark's in His arresting majesty. In a Greek church, you feel that the Eye of God is on you from the moment you step in the door; you are utterly enco

Not surprisingly, Angelina's personal life has always seemed to upstage her acting career, most notably her interesting affairs of the heart.Amidst all of the tabloid fervor, however, one thing remains apparent - whether thanks to a stylist's keen eye or her own evolving tastes, Angelina Jolie has stood out as a beautifully dressed woman as of recent. Whether dressed in a beautiful canary yellow vintage gown for the Cannes Film Festival, or the black lace gown at the 2007 Venice Film Festival seen here, Angelina has come a long way since her days as a rebellious upstart. Angelina seems to be taking a cue from such classic and regal beauties as Audrey Hepburn and

America is such a 'young' country that you are hard pressed to find a building one hundred years old, much less two or three hundred. As someone who loves history, architecture and good food, I have always found myself fascinated by Europe. Last year my daughter and I traveled to Italy. We stayed in a hotel by the sea and traveled to Rome, Pompeii and Florence. We found ourselves surrounded

Best Places to Retire: Venice, Florida
U.S. News and World Report recently named Venice, Florida as one of the best places to retire. "Coming into downtown Venice, Fla., feels a bit like slipping back to an older America, where once thriving Main Streets sat at the center of quiet, walkable neighborhoods. It's no accident. Venice was designed to re-create the atmosphere of a traditional small town, specifically for retirees."

      Death in Venice
credit: foto_decadentTod in Venedig by Thomas Mann is one of my favourite books. The fashion spread "Wellen" Karl Lagerfeld shot for Vogue Germany's current issue reminds me pretty much of that novel. Just one pictures doesn't fit so I didn't show it here. But you can see it here."Death in Venice" is about an author - Gustav von Aschenbach - in his early 50s who seeks rest in Venice/Lido. There he falls in love with a young boy, what he tells himself is an abstract, artistic interest. Well there happens nothing in that case. But, however, by accident he finds out about a cholera epedemic in Venice, but funks his resolution to warn the boys Polish family, knowing that if he does, Tadzio (the boy) will leave the hotel and be lost to him. So he stays and dies of cholera at last. This particular picture was my initial point:credit: foto_decadentSee the rest of the spread here
