Green Solutions Available Now - Green vehicles are not just in the future and in labs. They are right now and on a street near you with these cars and trucks
There are lots of reasons to go green: Fuel is expensive, Pope Benedict XVI decreed environmental pollution is a mortal sin, and, surprise of all surprises, depending on how globally you consider the costs, it’s cheaper in the long run. Since definitions of “doing the right thing” number like oxygen molecules in lungs full of fiery rhetoric, that concept won’t even enter into the discussion. You’ll find no ethanol-burning vehicles on this list. Issues include the facts that fuel consumption increases by 25 percent when you burn E85 and that ethanol continues to be produced mostly from corn. The quantity of corn required to fill an SUV with ethanol could feed a person for a year, a point made all the more pertinent by the riots sparked by food shortages currently peppering the glo

A system designed and installed by German engineering company Linde will purify the gas and chill it to 260 degrees below zero, cold enough for the gas to turn into a liquid. Waste Management will use the liquefied natural gas in its own, specially outfitted trucks. The company also may try to sell it. Landfill gas by itself won't replace oil, he said. "It's going to be more on the niche side," Eckhardt said. "It's not going to be the fuel for the majority of our vehicles. But we think the world will turn into a multifuel world." High gas prices hurting the sale of some vehicles; helping others
For weeks gas prices have been soaring to record heights. Now auto dealers in the Grand Rapids area say those high gas prices are hurting sales of big vehicles. A growing number of savvy shoppers are in the market for more fuel efficient cars. The average truck or SUV gets about 15 miles to the gallon and many smaller cars get twice that much. So, it’s no surprise that many people are looking for a change. Jennifer and Billy Couch spent the day at Keller Ford shopping for not one but two new cars and fuel efficiency is the most important thing on their minds. “I need something over 30 miles a gallon,” said Billy Couch. With gas prices are soaring above $3.75, the couple says they’re spending nearly $200 a week on gas. The couple is among growing number people tradin

Yumans trade in for smaller, more gas-efficient vehicles
The word “economize” may squeal into drivers’ minds when they look at gas prices around Yuma. In recent months, soaring gas prices have led area residents to begin trading in their large vehicles for more fuel-efficient cars and motorcycles. One such person is Aaron Johnston, a technician at Performance Motor Sports who owns a Bronco truck. He says the truck got seven miles to the gallon and he usually spent more than $300 a month on gas. That changed when Johnston bought a Suzuki DR 350 motorcycle. He says he now gets 52 mpg on his bike. Before “I couldn’t afford to pay for the gas.” Now he is saving money and helping the environment, all at the same time. Britain’s in love with the 4×4 forever - Despite the concerted effort of environmentalists and the taxman, all-wheel-drive vehicles are enjoying a sales boom
Reports of the death of the 4×4 have been greatly exaggerated. Despite swingeing tax rises and an orchestrated campaign by the green lobby, the latest figures show that the vehicles once dubbed “planet killers” are more popular than ever. The findings will come as a shock to the government and environmentalists who had hoped that a raft of new legislation would curb sales of large, fuel hungry 4×4s. Instead, car makers are reporting an extraordinary boom in 4×4 sales in both the new and used car market over the past year. The first three months of 2008 have seen a rise in sales, despite the credit crunch and a wave of belt-tightening in other sectors of the car market. Electric vehicles not really eco-friendly without clean power
Right when we thought that, the electric vehicle is the answer to cutting our rising fuel costs some new research finds the ultimate flaw in this new power source. There is no doubt that plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) result in good fuel economy figures — GM is currently touting its PHEV-to be, the Volt, as getting 150MPG over all. However, a study published by Carnegie Mellon University and the Green Car Congress (GGC) suggests that if we do not make our power generation system less carbon intensive, PHEVs could have little benefit over regular hybrids (HEVs). Instead, they achieve these high numbers by supplementing the power produced by their gasoline engines with power taken from the grid. This has caused controversy lately, as hybrid-opponents often claim that battery production

Hydrogen Stations Needed for Fuel-Cell Vehicles of the Future
Can you locate the hydrogen filling station closest to you? That, in a nutshell, is the crux of the problem for an auto industry at a critical juncture in developing fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs) where hydrogen is converted to electricity onboard and there are no emissions. The major automakers have been working on FCVs—some for more than a decade—and many have small test fleets on the road around the world with plans to ramp up volume over the next six or seven years. To justify the investment to take the next step for carmakers—putting about 1000 FCVs each on the road compared with less than 100 per company now—requires the involvement of all the stakeholders: carmakers, energy companies, the government, and the acceptance of consumers, says Larry Burns, GM’s vice-president of rese

Plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars can offer a sustainable transportation system for Europe but barriers to the development of these “superior technologies”, including subsidies to the oil sector, must first come to an end, says the green NGO.  The WWF study finds that vehicles running solely or partly on electricity “are significantly more efficient and may emit fewer greenhouse gases than many so-called ‘alternative fuels’, even when that electricity is mostly produced using fossil fuels”.  Electric vehicles are not new but have been largely neglected in the past due to their high cost, safety shortages and the difficulty of making them run on long distances.  But as oil prices soar and regulators tighten greenhouse gas emission and fuel effi

California Regulators Vote to Lower Target for Zero-Emission Vehicles
California regulators have drastically cut the number of zero-emission vehicles required to be sold in the state by the year 2014, a decision that frustrated environmentalists but came as a relief to auto manufacturers.  The rules adopted Thursday put the number of electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles that automakers sell in California at 7,500 by 2014 [...]

Electric car goal could be cut again - State Panel’s staff suggests target of just 2,500 vehicles
California’s once-ambitious, always-controversial plan to require automakers to sell electric cars faces a vote this week that, advocates say, would effectively gut the program. Thursday, the state Air Resources Board meets in Sacramento to consider a plan to cut the number of pure electric vehicles that carmakers would be required to sell over the next few years from 25,000 to 2,500. When the state enacted this zero-emission vehicle mandate in 1990, it called for 10 percent of new-vehicle sales from big automakers to be all-electric by 2003, or about 100,000 cars or more a year. That requirement was eventually delayed by several years and reduced to the current level. At the board’s request, the ARB staff revisited the mandate and produced a 52-page proposal that concluded bat

Mazda vehicles : the motor industry

The study looked at the reliability of more than 450,000 vehicles, from 33 manufacturers, across the UK and USA. Asian cars dominate N.Y. auto show - U.S. firms, for their part, highlight handful of niche vehicles
Asian automakers probably got a bigger sales boost than their U.S. rivals from vehicles introduced at the annual New York auto show.  New models from Asia included Nissan’s latest Maxima, and the Fit small car and Acura TSX sports sedan from Honda. South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. showed a two-door version of its Genesis premium car, while Toyota Motor Corp. had a coupe that may be added to its youth-oriented Scion brand.  Models from Kia Motors, Mazda and Subaru also drew raves. The new-model count at the show mirrors the rising fortunes of the Asians in the Northeast, as well as the total U.S. market. Asian companies accounted for 10 of the 20 vehicles making their global or North American debuts, compared with two from U.S. automakers, according to the show’s organize

New York International Auto Show: Fuel Cells, Electric Vehicles, & 50 Cent’s Performance Pontiac
Amid tough times for carmakers, the New York International Auto Show, offers a vision of a future flush with alternative-energy vehicles, downsized but hot concept cars, and a possible rebound for the U.S. auto industry. First, the bad news. New car sales in 2008 will be the lowest since 1994, according to a forecast from J.D. Power and Associates. On the face of it, the sheer sales numbers seem impressive. Some 14.95 million vehicles are expected to be sold this year, 12.3 million of which be retail sales to consumers (the rest are to rental fleets). However, retails sales in 2007 hit 12.8 million units, and J.D. Power originally forecast a combined total of 15.7 million for this year. “The auto market is entering into a true recessionary phase, which is something we have not seen i

Air board may trim electric car mandate - Regulators could focus more on hybrid vehicles
SACRAMENTO – California’s air-quality regulators may wish to lay to rest the legend of who killed the electric car.But a proposal going before the Air Resources Board on Thursday fails to sway critics convinced that the state continues to retreat from its once-lofty goal of seeing thousands of electric cars on the roadways. “They’re backing down,” said Bill Hammons, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego. “It’s a total collapse.” A staff report recommends that the board greatly reduce the required number of purely electric vehicles that automakers offer for sale and instead focus on more readily available and less expensive hybrids that would still cut pollution dramatically. It’s a difference that would save the auto industry more than

80% Vehicles Will Be Hybrids by 2020
Four out of five General Motors vehicles sold in the United States will have to be hybrids by 2020, according to Bob Lutz, the company’s product guru. Speaking at the New York Auto Show, Lutz said, "Ultimately by 2020 we figure that 80 percent of vehicles will require some sort of hybridization," because of new U.S. fuel- economy standards. "We cannot get to 35 miles per gallon with anything resembling the current product portfolio with anything resembling current technology."In a Bloomberg News report yesterday, Lutz targeted the percentage of hybrid sales to approximately 30 percent by 2015. “Around 2015 we're going to have to sell a ton of hybrids whether people want them or not." He added, “It's basically going to result in the quasi-disappearance of V-8 engines."Lutz comments ec

Plug-in hybrid vehicles could help environment, maximize power
At his Ozarks New Energy Conference presentation, Jeff Davis, the chairman of the Missouri Public Service Commission (Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder’s former chief of staff) had “plug-in hybrids” on his PowerPoint list of alternative energy items — but had no time to talk about them. A plug-in hybrid is basically a battery-powered electric vehicle with a small back-up gasoline engine (or no gasoline engine). You plug in the vehicle when you park (e.g., at home overnight or while at work). No special gas or hydrogen stations are required. The vehicle plugs in like a lamp. Prius/Honda hybrids get 38-60 mpg; a plug-in hybrid would get 100 mpg (when using gas). The range you need determines whether you buy an all-electric or a gas/electric plug-in. A tank of gas will get 300 plus mi

      Modern vehicles’ electronics systems
As we advance through the decades with progression in electronics, science and technology we must not forget the basis of our modern day sources of transportation. I would like to explicate a system in which I am fairly familiar with and have been the highlights of my interests. This is the recent power developments and characteristics of a four-cycle engine. Also known as the Otto cycle engine, the four-stroke engine works of off many mechanical components that simply derive power on the basic mixture of air and fuel. Hence the name “four cycle” such an engine consists of four complete strokes or cycles to consume and make power. With the completion of four cycles, intake, compression, power and exhaust, such a machine can thoroughly and consistently make power.Today, manufacturers ar
