Me and The Veggie Weenie- A Reluctant Love Story
Last night, I came home from work to a fridge absolutely stuffed with veggies (I opened it up and a broccoli flew out at me... I swear it's true) but despite this explosion of greenery, all I could think about eating was a plain old veggie dog. (I had already ingested so many greens in smoothie form that I think my skin was starting to turn a funny colour.)Now, I'd love to show you a picture of it, but last night our new camera arrived. (YAY!) In the commotion to try it out, like, NOW, we ended up with a terrible blurry picture, so I present to you this stand-in shot from many moons ago...close enough to last nights scoff, only I actually didn't have greasy fries with it this time around.Me and the veggie weenie didn't really hit it off in the beginning. We eat them plain and also use all kinds of sauces and dips. My personal, cannot go wrong on any veggie is garlic butter which consists of melting one Tablespoon of butter with one dash of garlic salt. Toss over veggies and wala. MM MM Good! However, I also have a tried and true recipe for cheese sauce that never fails to score points with the family. 4 Tbsp butterApx 2 Cups milk1/4 Cup flour2 Cups Shredded cheese (we use a combo of Pepper Jack and Sharp Cheddar)Melt butter and add flour. Stir until butter is completely absorbed. Slowly add milk while stirring (you may or may not use it all. It depends on how think you like your sauce).

Many thanks to Sarah for letting me know about tomorrow's debate. I'm not much into politics, but this is a debate that's worth hearing. Thursday, 10/4 Dewar's and Vice Magazine are hosting the next in their series of Dewar's Debates. The topic? Meat vs Veggie. Our debaters are tackling the Meat vs. Veggie debate, with a healthy dose of humour & argument fueled by complimentary Dewar's.Personally, I say, why argue? I love them both. Steak? Yum. French fries? Delicious. French fries are a vegetable right? You guys can pick a side, I'll be Switzerland. Nothing makes me happier than food and scotch and thus, I think we should all head over to Zuzu's in Cambridge, choose sides, and battle it out over a glass of Scotch. As Ron Burgundy says: "I love scotch. Veggietales - Veggie Fables
I've always thought it kind of ironic that the Christian animation company Big Ideas would use vegetables as characters in their series Veggietales. I used to enjoy the show to some degree. I thought it had some wit about it. Nowadays, I wouldn't touch them. Unless cooked or boiled.None of the characters have arms... they have mouths and stuff, but I guess arms and legs takes away from the concept that they're vegetables, I guess. I think it sends two other messages also: 1. Christians are mostly 'armless, and 2. Our characters can't masturbate, although you will find one veggie doing just that in one of the following videos:Warning! Both these vegetale parodies will offend the more 'precious' Christian types.TV Funhouse - ReligetablesUploaded by PigLips

      Life insurance - go veggie?
We all know that vegetarians tend to have a healthier lifestyle and a diet to match. But in comparison to a meat eater; what are the differences and benefits of becoming a "veggie" or simply introducing healthier food into your diet? Some recent studies into the area of dietary requirement have prompted those involved to suggest that up to 80% of our daily diet should consist of fruit and vegetables. Currently 3.5 million Britons do not eat meat or plan to quit eating meat in the next 12 months according to a survey carried out by Animal friends insurance. This figure also includes those who eat fish as an alternative to traditional meats such as chicken, beef, pork and lamb. It has long been suggested that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables will help prevent certain types of cancer and reduce the general risk of many diseases. Indeed the vegetables thought to be particularly adept at this all belong to the cruciferous family. This includes vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cau

My veggies are ripe for the picking so I threw together a tasty melange of greens, in the interest of using them at their peak. Try this salad with a variety of dressings, not just the Creamy Citrus I've used (below). Omit the bacon for a vegetarian version. You may choose to blanch the broccoli, beans and snow peas for 1 to 2 minutes in lightly salted water. This intensifies their color and flavor, too. After blanching, rinse in ice water to stop the cooking process. Veggie Hot Dog
It was the time when American food became popular and wherever you go, you are tempted with Pizzas, Burgers etc. We saw joints like Pizza hut competing with other restaurants and coming up with most exciting offers to attract people. Of course with the response they got, they were unable to have the offers running for long. This becoming so popular, we ended up making these at home, what better way to enjoy, than preparing it ourselves. Of course Indianizing in the way. At one point we used to prepare pizzas, burgers so much, that folks at home started longing for Indian food. But my fascination towards pizzas, burgers is no end. With pizzas, burgers, there were Veg types available, but items like Hot Dogs were basically prepared with beef or pork, there was no way I can try to make it. Carolina Veggie Oil Bust
It never ceases to amaze me what the government will do to extort money. Recently a guy in North Carolina was pulled over and fined for filling his gas tank with the wrong kind of fuel.Specifically he used vegetable oil. Did I ever tell you guys about this old history professor that asked our class if it was true kids were having veggie oil orgies in the dorms?Ok--that didn't have much to do with this story, but I thought I'd mention it.Anyway, Bob Teixeira decided it was time to take a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil. So the Charlotte musician spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He bought soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, spending about 30 percent more than diesel would. His reward was a $1,000 fine for not paying motor fuel taxes. He has been told to expect another $1,000 fine from the federal government. Not only is this hypocritical, it is idiotic. The state is actually getting more out of Bob Teixira than they would if he p

We decided to try an organic fruit & vegetable delivery program a few months ago and we are LOVING it. We use a company called Share Organics, who use bicycles to deliver bins of greens to our neighbourhood every week. We customize our order online and pay online, making the logistics super easy. And this is the result: a new bunch of fruits and vegetables every Tuesday. It's like Christmas every week, opening up the bin to new goodies. The photo is of this week's bin. Look at all those amazing colours! We often get vegetables we've never cooked with before, so it gives us the opportunity to try new recipes. The organic stawberries are the best I've tasted in a long time. In the winter we only get tasteless strawberries from California. The local ones are what REAL strawberries taste like. Even Being a Part-Time Veggie Can Help the Planet
I know some people have a hard time going vegetarian all the way. Old habits die hard, and sometimes that nice steak is just too hard to give up. (Can you tell I date someone who won’t go veggie ever? I mention it every time veggie things come up!) However, Wanna Veg has posted a great list about how going veggie even one day a week can help save the planet. The statistics are astounding — and might get to to consider making and All-Veggie-Wednesday event! Ten Reasons to Go Veggie One Day a Week: Save 84,000 gallons of water. Save 245 lbs of grain. Save 7,700 sq feet of rain forest. (That is equivalent to four good sized houses.) Reduce your contribution to the over 10,000,000,000 animals slaughtered for food. Save 15.5 gallons of gasoline, good for one fill-up! Not contribute to over 403 lbs of manure produced by food animals. Reduce your contribution to over 24,000,000 pounds of antibiotics that are added to animal feed. Save 87 square feet of topsoil from erosion. Redu

Okay, I'm not veggie either but my other half is and this now means that these products, products that I like, are now banned from his flat and from our new house seeing as we are buying a house together. It also means he can not eat them anymore, and this may be the first he hears about this. The Vegetarian Society is extremely disappointed to learn that Mars favourites such as Mars, Milky Way, Bounty, Snickers, Galaxy, Twix and Maltesers are now all unsuitable for vegetarians. At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods’ decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step. Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves. If you are veggie and want to err, contact Masterfoods with your comments then here is the contact form to do so.Please note I do not endorse harassment in any way, sha

It never stopped all day and was really heavy so I was unable to get any photographs.I can now say that all the water butts are full, the pond has never been so full even the tadpoles have got armbands on and the garden is well and truly soaked. We even had to move the veggies that are in truggs into the garage as we were concerned that they would get waterlogged. The potatoes in the sacks are doing really well and almost everyday we are topping the bags up with soil. We have added a few more truggs to the collection and put Peppers, Aubergines and cucumbers into them, just for a bit more variety. I took this picture this morning to try and show you how wet everything is and how everything has been pushed over by the wind, I understand the combination of soaked ground and wind is not good for veggies so I hope everything will be o.k.We have also added Sweetcorn around the edges of the plot to try and maximise what we are growing. Veggie Burgers….also known as Delicious!
AND they’re made of meat!!! Huh? I’m sure that someone will have sufficient evidence claiming that they have a perfect recipe for a non-meat ‘veggie’ burger that is delicious. Bring it on, I say. I love a good burger, but it’s got to have some ‘POW’ to it; I can’t just take any ol’ hunk of decimated meat, pat it religiously into a patty and toss it on my grill. That’s not a burger, it’s an easy way out. We like to keep frozen vegetarian burgers on hand for a quick and painless meal, but, baby, the weather is warm and the grill has been bored to death all winter long. It’s time to cook us some real burgers! Long ago inspiration propelled me into tossing several rather sad excuses for vegetables into my food processor to be minced to a near paste and added to a mix of ground turkey and nearly fat-free beef to see what could transpire over a flame. The result was stupendous! I nearly dislocated my shoulder patting mys

      Best. Veggie. Burgers. Ever.
The other day, the foodie decided to dig through some of my vegetarian cookbooks for veggie burger recipes. After perusing a few he asked me “TVP or Walnut Oatmeal?” Although I do often really like the way textured vegetable protein works in recipes, walnut oatmeal just sounded too good to turn down. I hadn’t tried either recipe before, because despite my many recipe books, I really have never been much of a cook. After a quick trip to the store for a few needed ingredients, the burger assembly began. When he got to the browning of the patties, I was amazed at how meaty the burgers smelled. The house filled up with their irresistible aroma and I couldn’t wait to try them.
