Eat your vegetables! They’re good for you!…….Yes Mom. Actually it didn’t come down quite like that for me. Most vegetables I grew up with were some strange strain that came in a can. The cheapest fruits and vegetables are the one’s you grow yourself (we’re working on it). Well they are at least in my garden These carrots are the first ones to come out of my raised bed this year. I was hoping that they would be a bit straighter, as I filled the bed with not too lumpy compost. The carrots seem to have not taken much notice of this and have sprouted additional arms and legs. Well at least they allowed us to have a more interesting meal with them. Also on the plus side
Restrictions exist on oddly shaped fruits and vegetables that are too big, small, or ugly. Fruits and vegetables that are rich in nitrates can protect your stomach from damage. The nitrates are converted into nitrites by the bacteria in your mouth, and then subsequently transformed into biologically active nitric oxide in the stomach.
That means that antibacterial mouthwashes can also be harmful for the stomach.
Nitrate-rich vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, radishes and beetroot activate the mucous membranes' own protective mechanisms, reducing the risk of problems such as gastric ulcers.

Washing fruits and vegetables does reduce the risk of food poisoning. However, washing alone may not be enough.
Studies show that some disease-causing microbes can evade even
chemical sanitizers. These bacteria can make their way inside the
leaves of lettuce, spinach and other vegetables and fruit, where
surface treatments cannot reach them. Microbes can also organize
themselves into tightly knit packs called biofilms to protect
themselves from harm.
Biofilms can harbor multiple versions of infectious, disease-causing bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. coli.
Unfortunately, the researchers conducting the linked study recommend

Asparagus is a slim green vegetable that has many health benefits attributed to it.
This vegetable is sometimes referred to as the aristocrat of vegetables. Many Greeks and Romans not only appreciated asparagus for its taste but also believed it possessed medicinal properties--from alleviating toothaches to preventing bee stings.
Of course, such beliefs were purely mythical, but asparagus contains many healthy vitamins and minerals. Asparagus appears in markets as early as February, but the peak of its crop's season is April and May.

Fruits and Veggies
When my children were growing up, I used to follow the 5 a day rule.
For example, in the afternoon, they might ask me if they could have some ice cream, and I’d always ask them how many fruits and veggies they’d eaten. If the answer was any less than 4, I’d tell them to grab an apple or banana. By the time, they eaten the additional fruit, they were full and had forgotten all about the ice cream.
In the spirit of 5 a day, I’m going to feature 5 days of fruits and 5 days of vegetables: different varieties, different uses, and different recipes.
Here are 10 reasons to eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day:

Here is a quick picture I snapped of our dinner Tuesday night. On Monday I opened two packages of E-Z Peel raw shrimp, rinsed and placed in a container and then opened my cupboards to throw a bunch of random ingredients on to marinade. I then chopped up red and green peppers and 1 1/2 onions into large chunks and added them. On Tuesday I removed the container from the refrigerator and cleaned the shrimp, threaded them onto skewers and we grilled a yummy, healthy and very 'springy' meal for dinner. It's actually one of our favorites and my husband has already requested grilled shrimp ka-bobs weekly all summer long. LOL.Amounts. I know you want amounts. But what I want you to do is to have 'fun' with cooking and not treat it like a science experiment. Don't be scared of your food. A
The bad news is that by avoiding the foods you don't like, you may be depriving your body of valuable nutrients, and making weight loss harder by limiting your options. The good news? You can teach your taste buds to enjoy the foods at which you once turned up your nose.1. Grant them a second chance. Maybe you didn't know your palate, like most other things, matures as you get older. In other words, if you were five years old when you declared your hatred for beets, it may be time to put them through another taste test. You might be surprised at what you've been missing all of these years.2. Remember: One bad apple does not spoil the bunch. If the word "vegetable" conjures visions of much-maligned cabbage or lima beans, it's time to broaden your produce horizons. With hundreds of veggies o

My Health - It can be tough to get kids to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Don’t force the foods, but continue to offer a variety. Try these ideas:Set a good example by eating fruits and vegetables yourself. You are a role model for your kids in so many ways. Eating is no exception. When your kids see you eating and enjoying fruits and vegetables, they will too.Offer lots of choices. Give children a choice of fruits for lunch. Let them help decide on the dinner vegetables or what goes into the salad.Let your children help. Kids enjoy helping in the kitchen, and are often more willing to eat foods they help choose and prepare. Rainbow Vegetables & Fruits.Scientists have been developing amazing variants of vegetables & fruits which are said to taste the same as the normal varieties, but in return make our food more colorful. Consumers are looking forever new experiences on their dinner plates and color features very large in their desire for different things. While traditionalists may baulk at the unusual colors, it is not the first time that plant breeders have changed the appearance of vegetables. Until the 17th century most carrots eaten in Europe were white, yellow or purple. The orange pigment was added by Dutch plant breeders looking for a way to celebrate Holland's ro

So few days ago while cooking this refreshing dish, I was watching over my toddler play with some of his toys few feet away from where I was standing. Sometime later he started chewing on one of his toy and I like any other dutiful mother asked him to stop. The naughty toddler that he is continued to chew on it ignoring my willful pleas, so I scornfully said "S, you are a Bad Boy, stop chewing it".
Now I was expecting that he would listen to me and stop chewing, but instead he said "Amma Bad Boy". That totally caught me off-guard as I was hearing it for the first time and I ended up laughing loudly and giving the toddler a big hug.
It's one of those wired things that kids say but to me it seemed very funny more so because it was coming from somebody not more than 3 feet tall, bundle of innocence who until "yesterday" could not even sit, let alone talk. I had heard him say words, but not sentences and this seemed like a sentence to me albeit an unconventional one.
Anyway,
More and more of us have become aware of how important what we eat is to our health. We’ve finally realized we can’t expect our bodies to stay healthy if we aren’t feeding it nutricious foods. Fruits and VegetablesFresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables add vitamins, minerals and various phytonutrients. They are nice ingredients but by no means necessary and mostly only included in insignificant amounts. If a brand of food contains high quality protein, carbohydrate and fat sources but no fruits or vegetables, it's still a better choice than one with less ideal main ingredients that does have a few pieces of blueberries, peas or carrots added to make the ingredient list look more impressive. Sharing some of the fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables you eat yourself will add much more nutritional value to your dog's diet - just please do not give onions, grapes or raisins. It is that time of the year again, when the cold front has set in. The cold makes me want to stay inside, bundle up in some warm clothes, pull up a rug and sip something warm from time to time. And when hunger strikes it makes you crave for something special that makes you feel good both inside and out. The first thing that comes to my mind is hot hearty SOUP with some warm crusty bread.
Both me and my husband are great fans of soups and we have all the time in the restaurants, however I had never ventured trying it out by myself. But after seeing many of Rachael Ray’s cooking shows and the ease with she makes them, by putting together readily available ingredients, in less amount of time, it got me started into trying it out.
I also looked for recipes on the internet that would suit my requirements. Even though there is no dearth of recipes for soup, my main source of idea and inspiration for this soup came from this site here. After going through numerous recipes I finally

We've all seen Vegiforms and how much fun they can be in the veggie patch. But it seems that a few chefs - with a little too much time on their hands - have come up with their own creations.
The real charm is that until these vegetables came in from the garden they were just your average caspicums, pak choy and cauliflowers. It boggles the mind what dinner might look like tonight, doesn't it?

Vegetables are usually recommended in a diet but you need to know more about how they should be selected, properly stored, and served. Vegetables are an important source of dietary fiber that does not contain cholesterol, is low in calories, sodium, and fat.
Vegetables may help prevent some diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Spinach, green peppers, and broccoli are sources of antioxidants and help protect tissues by slowing down oxidation. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, asparagus in vitamin C, chicory is a source of vitamin B-6, magnesium, calcium, and riboflavin.
Buy only high quality vegetables and try to enhance their flavour and preserve their nutrients. When selecting them, look for vegetables with blemish-free surfaces and characteristic shapes. Choose only the vegetables you plan to eat during the next few days. If you keep them longer they can lose taste or nutrient levels.
Avoid vegetables with wilted or damaged leaves. Choose in-season vegetables if possible b

Baked penne is one of my favorite pasta dishes. This recipe ditches the meat and incorporates a ton of good-for-you veggies in a really tasty way. Who needs meat when you’ve got pasta like this?
Roasting brings out the natural flavor and sweetness in the vegetables so don’t skip that step. Taking the time to do roast the veggies makes all the difference in the world. I mean, just look at that photo! Doesn’t it make you want to grab a fork and dig in?
I’ll admit, I’m very heavy handed on the sauce and cheese. Use less of each if you don’t

The semester is consuming up my time. I’m glad I made the decision to switch from Hebrew to English in blogging, but English apparently takes me much longer, and I can’t write a post before I leave to campus as I did in Hebrew. Then when I get back home in the evening I’m too wiped out for anything that’s under “recreation” on my list.I spent the past weekend in New Haven, attending a conference on Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai at Yale. Many interesting speakers, you can find the full list here. Before heading back to Princeton, I had breakfast at the hotel where I was staying. The difference between American and Israeli breakfasts are so striking, I still haven’t gotten used to it. Israelis wouldn’t dream of a breakfast without vegetables. Perhaps at home it would be slightly more acceptable, but if you’re having an assorted breakfast in a hotel that’s something different. Not one piece of tomato or a lettuce-leaf on the entire buffet.
