Photographer and gardener Joel Heffner has some tips for getting the best snaps of your garden, like filling the frame and getting an interesting angle. Most people take garden pictures by aiming the camera downward, because it's easier than bending down or crawling in the dirt. The problem is our eye level may not be the best angle from which to take a photo. Try to move around and look for interesting angles—front, back, side, top and bottom views. Also, Heffner says that cloudy days are better than sunny ones for getting good pics without harsh shadows. How's your garden doing? Post your photos in the c

A Brief Guide To Vegetable Gardening
Many people are into vegetable gardening nowadays, and they are even getting their supply of vegetables from their gardens. Of course, this makes the vegetables much cheaper, and in addition the vegetables taste much better too. Actually, vegetable gardening is quite similar to gardening for shrubs and herbs. With just a little care, these plants can produce excellent vegetables for consumption. The size of the garden needs to be decided beforehand. Select a place where the drainage is good, there is good supply of air and healthy soil. Sunlight is most important. One more thing to do is to fence your garden, because there will be several animals trying to get a bite or more at your vegetables. For mice, moles and other rodents, you will need to use a trap somewhere in the garden. You will

      The Basics of Vegetable Gardening
Before taking up the garden vegetables individually, I shall outline the general practice of cultivation, which applies to all. The purposes of cultivation are three to get rid of weeds, and to stimulate growth by (1) letting air into the soil and freeing unavailable plant food, and (2) by conserving moisture. As to weeds, the gardener of any experience need not be told the importance of keeping his crops clean. He has learned from bitter and costly experience the price of letting them get anything resembling a start. He knows that one or two days' growth, after they are well up, followed perhaps by a day or so of rain, may easily double or treble the work of cleaning a patch of onions or carrots, and that where weeds have attained any size they cannot be taken out of sowed crops without

Make sure that all your plants need the same growing requirements and not needing more time and attention that you can give them. Konda normally eats something for a sunday lunch, that is if we feed her. As all sundays, this was no less hectic. We spent most of our energy getting them fed and bathe and get them ready for a nap. But Chinnu refused for a nap and was more interested in playing. Not only that, when he sees Peddu asleep, he will ensure he wakes him too. Both of them have this habit of going and sitting over the other and patting them to sleep, when the other one is fast asleep. So after two minutes, you are sure the other one will get up. Even I used to do the same, because some recipes and flavors just stick with us and we don't feel the urge to try something new. But this time around, as I mulled over the idea of a wholesome vegetarian soup, there were quite a few ideas that played in my head. I wanted it to be thick and creamy, yet without all the fat that heavy cream brings with it, and I wanted it to be flavorful as well as healthy. So guess what! I decided to try a mix-vegetable soup (a nice way to throw in all the veggies that you love!:)) combined with coconut milk. To give it that distinct flavor, I decided to roast/saute the ingredients and flavor them with spices which infused a higher taste and aroma. The bo

      Planning the Vegetable Patch
Growing vegetables is one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening. Even in a small space it is possible to grow a wide range of nutritious vegetables.A reasonable quantity of vegetables can be produced even in a small to average size garden. Most species can be grown much more closely together than generally indicated if the soil is rich and constantly replenished with organic matter and a good watering regime is maintained. In a larger garden partial self-sufficiency can be achieved across a wide range of vegetables if the garden is efficiently planned and maintained. The most important prerequisite for growing vegetables is an abundance of sunlight. A vegetable garden needs to be located in the most open and sunny part of the garden, away from overhanging trees or shade from buildings. This often means that the vegetable garden has to be centrally sited. Not always an appealing thought but properly maintained there is no reason why a vegetable garden should not be as attractive as a

      The Home Vegetable Garden
Conventional or Organic? If you are determined to go it alone, there is up-to-date and inexpensive literature existing in the library and on the internet on how to prepare and outline the home landscape. In truth, one of the neatest possible effects from visiting others in their gardens is the generation of new Ideas. Start your garden by partnering with some one at first. My experience with vegetable gardening was with my dad at age eleven. He was invited to use a ten acre tract of land from Ms Studts; a lady who needed someone to keep an eye on the property a few years until her family's estate became settled.I found out among the most distasteful of the jobs facing a home gardener is that of eradicating weeds from the garden. However, the home grown tomatoes, greens, squash, melons, strawberries and others were great and were certainly worth the effort.Tables in guides and catalog list the most serious pests that a home gardener is likely to encounter, along with recommendations for

When we make either dal or Sambar or anything for Rice, a dry dish with vegetable goes without saying. So this also features a lot in the hassle, we have for planning the menu. Preparing Soil For A Vegetable Garden
Considering the importance of soil in plant growth, one needs to ascertain the characteristics of soil that is being used for the purpose of growing plants in a vegetable garden. Properties of soil including the nutrient levels can be determined by getting the soil tested in a registered environmental laboratory. The soil test results will determine whether there are any deficiencies in the necessary nutrients that are required for proper growth of plants. However, one needs to inform the laboratory that the soil sample has been collected for a vegetable garden plot. The parameters that are commonly tested in a soil include the pH of the soil, its alkalinity, nitrogen content, phosphorus content, concentration of sulfur and also potassium. Most vegetable plants thrive well in soils whose pH ranges between 5.5 and 7.5. Determining the pH of soil is important because pH has significant effect on the availability of nutrients and water. A soil type can be termed as "good" only if the ph

      Vegetable diet
This diet is very simple and all you need are some carrots and cabbage. Grate them very finely and squeeze the juice of a lemon. Then divide in 3 equal shares for the whole day. When you eat that salad you don’t feel hunger because the raw vegetables sate you and there are little calories in them. In this way you clean your body of the toxins. It’s recommendable for you not to smoke and to drink alcohol when you are on this diet.

I Almost Forgot the Tomato (Fruit or Vegetable) Debate
I almost forgot the other interesting topic of conversation from our evening out. Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? It was amazing at how much conversational mileage this worn out debate carried! I will repeat my opinion here: The tomato is a FRUIT! To the jerk with the bad hairpiece and the ugly tie, I repeat The tomato is a FRUIT! The reason that they are classified as fruits and not veggies (no they are not sweet but that doesn't make them a veggie Mr. Philosopher Want to Be). Their very name comes from the Latin words for "Fruit Bearer". The reasons tomatoes are classified as fruit are as follows:They grow on trees. No matter how spindly their prickly stems are, they are considered to be branches. Tomatoes have seeds Tomatoes have skin Tomatoes have juice Tomatoes contain the fruit gene (and who wants to argue with the DNA these days?)There you go Mr. Know it All! I hope you read my blog about this burning hot topic and realize I DID GET THE LAST WORD!

Organic Options For Fertilising Your Vegetable Garden
I have often been asked what is the best organic fertiliser to add to the soil of a vegetable garden. Its not the sort of question that has an easy answer, but its not a complicated solution either. There is really no exact answer to a “best” product when it comes to organic nutrients.Organic gardening is more about a system of gardening - Crop rotation, mulching, composting, vermicast, and companion planting all form a part of an Organic Gardening System. The best place to start is to create 2 or 3 compost heaps in your backyard.Whether you use a Compost Bin, Tumbler, Stack or Compost bays – the end result will still be the same - A nutrient rich soil conditioner and mulch ready to add to your vegetable garden. You should always ensure your compost heap receives sufficient heat in order to destroy seeds that may be present from lawn clippings and weeds.Suitable ingredients for your compost heap includes – old hay or straw, vegetable scraps, shredded paper, lawn clippings &

Slug and Snail Control in Your Vegetable Garden
Growing your own vegetables is very rewarding. That is, until the pests come calling. One of the most aggravating banes to the vegetable gardener is the slugs and snails. They appear, usually at night when you're sleeping and unable to pluck them away, and nibble away at all your precious seedlings and plants. The appearance of holes in the middle of leaves is a pointed clue to a snail problem. Those silvery slime trails over leaves and soil may look pretty and sparkly in the sun, but are a death sentence for your tender young plants. The pests will continue until there are no leaves left to sustain the life of the plant. How many plants I've lost to these pests is frustrating. Not only is the problem a time-wasting nuisance, it becomes costly replacing those ruined plants. As a beginner gardener, the battle with pests in my garden almost made me want to abandon the idea. However, with a little maintenance and care, these ravenous pests will not be such an issue.First, it is important

      Parsnips From The Vegetable Patch
The vegetable growing in my small patch has come to an end, for this year. It has been most definitely one of learning and I think that these parsnips sum it up quite nicely. Yes I can grow things, but the preparation has to be improved to allow the vegetables to flourish. It is obvious from the twisted parsnips that the soil is to hard and stony with to much clay in it.This is a job that I must sort out for next year and with the other lessons that I have learnt, the best way to do it would be to create more of a raised bed. This would benefit the vegetables in a few ways. Firstly the patch is not in the ideal location, but by raising the bed this should enable the soil to warm quicker and retain the heat better.Secondly, by adding more compost and soil this will improve the overall growing conditions and hopefully produce better vegetables next year.I am looking forward to next year to see how these changes work out...so stay tuned. We will be having the parsnips at the weekend, no mo
