I mentioned this in the comments to Suckerman's post about Heinlein... Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Y the Last Man) wrote a nice piece on establishing yourself as a writer. The piece isn't very long, but here's my favorite bit:WRITE MORE, DO OTHER STUFF LESS.That's it. Everything else is meaningless. You can take all the classes in the world and read every book on the craft out there, but at the end of

Brian K. Vaughan presents “The Secret Origin of Matches Malone!” Really. He does. These three issues feature Batman going “native” as a gangster, out to kill the Ventriloquist for killing the real Matches Malone. Again… really.
DC’s reprinting this crap in a Vaughan Batman trade in a couple months, which I imagine will kill lots of brain cells as interested readers find out what Vaughan’s take on Batman is like. It’s bad, firstly. But it’s also idiotic. Vaughan takes Matches Malone and tries to literalize him (as much as anyone can literalize with the atrocious Scott McDaniel art). It’s not just the story being dumb or poorly told (Vaughan loves having the cast–Nightwing and Oracle mostly–explain the obvious to each other), it’s the setting. Vaughan sets the story in definite continuity… Matches Malone coming off like something out of a white I’m Gonna Get You Sucka and Batman coming off (not “the best,”
Obviously, Brian K. Vaughan has had some creative writing classes. Unimaginative ones. He pays homage to them in Swamp Thing #3, an atrocious done-in-one set on a crabbing ship. The issue opens all right–Tefé keeps trying to get her narration right… until Vaughan reveals it isn’t Tefé narrating, but one of her shipmates, a young writer writing a chapter in her voice. Taken under those conditions–the narration being for a novel and not a comic book–it’s terribly written (a big problem with the story is it’s never clear whether or not the writer is supposed to be bad… I mean, I think he’s a complete douche bag, but I also think writing a story like this one is the act of a douche… so iit’s unclear). I mean, to continue the paranthetical free of the curved lines, if the guy’s just a shitty writer who goes crazy then it’s just about a crazy guy… if it’s about an author… well….

Demorou pra gente divulgar a discografia do cara! O prim
Relaunching Swamp Thing has proved quite the pickle for Vertigo… unless Warner Bros. manages to turn it in to a successful action movie starring Vin Diesel as Swamp Thing and Emilio Estevez as Alec Holland, I think the franchise is going to be dormant for quite a while. I’ve got a lot of love for all the Swamp Thing series and I can really appreciate Brian K. Vaughan’s take on it. He’s stuck with following up Millar’s impossible large ending to the series–Swamp Thing holding on to the damn planet–and he manages to bring it down real fast, real well, moving the setting to a high school with the Swamp Thing connection muted (for the first issue anyway). He has a nice bit of narration from Abby, surprising characterization… very well done first issue to restart a franchise (something Andy Diggle later did poorly).
However.
I read the first two issues because the first issue ends with things in motion, figured the second issue would continue it. To some ex
Chester City may be fined after arriving late for Friday’s League Two encounter at Lincoln City.
The match kicked off 55 minutes behind schedule after the Chester team bus arrived at Sincil Bank at 8.15pm and the club blamed traffic congestion around Lincoln for their delay.
However, chairman Stephen Vaughan admitted: “Lincoln City have put in an official complaint to the Football League about our late arrival.
“We’re preparing for a fine and we’ll pay whatever fine they give us.
“The coach left in plenty of time but we’ll just have to suffer the consequences.

The present Sufi Master of particular lineage, Naqshbandiyya - Mujaddidiyya Order, Llewellyn Vaughan Lee recently spoke about his personal journey into the timeless path of Sufism, about his own teacher, his work on Oneness and Spiritual Awakening of the World. In recent years, the focus of his writing and teaching has been on spiritual responsibility in our present time of transition, and the emerging global consciousness of oneness. Below is a very brief excerpt from his one hour audio interview in which he touch certain areas and subjects i feel are really important for our time. Shaykh Llewellyn Vaughan Lee, May God bless his path, speaks:My real feeling is that we have to respect the Divinity of Creation. Not in some nice ... I always feel we have sanitized God and part of the mystical path is to go beyond that. Its said, Sufism is Truth without form, and you go beyond any idea of the Divine. Its actually part of the what happened in the dark night of the soul, for example, Saint J

London, Aug 1 (IANS) England captain Michael Vaughan has apologised to star Indian bowler Zaheer Khan for the ‘jelly bean’ incident that caused an unpleasant stand-off between Khan and Kevin Pietersen on the field Sunday evening.

Indian fast-bowler Shantha Sreesanth has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee after admitting a level two disciplinary charge in breach of the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct. The 24-year-old was seen to barge into England captain Michael Vaughan as he returned to his mark during the fourth day at Trent Bridge yesterday afternoon – the second Test of the three-match series. The fine is the minimum penalty that can be handed out for a level two breach of clause 2.4 of the ICC code, which relates to "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play".Sreesanth could also have faced a one-match ban, which would have ruled him out of the third and final Test at the Oval.ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle, who conducted the hearing, said: "Cricket is a non-contact sport and any deviation from that fact is completely unacceptable, a point I made to Sreesanth in
Skipper Vaughan has a good vibe about England preparations for the second Test
England captain Michael Vaughan has praised his trio of pace bowlers ahead of the start of the second Test against India at Trent Bridge tomorrow.Commenting on the performance of James Anderson, Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett in the first Test, in which India narrowly managed to stave off defeat thanks to the rain, the 32-year-old lauded the way in which they worked as a unit.Vaughan said that the bowling attack achieved a collective consistency which "we [England] have probably not had since 2005".Then, a four-pronged pace attack of Stephen Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff helped to win the Ashes by applying persistent pressure on the Australian top order. The Yorkshire batsman reserved particular praise for the 6ft 7in Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett, who made his debut at Lord's last week, saying that the player had been picked ahead of Stuart Broad to pose specifi
Vaughan praised the balance of his bowling line-up
England skipper Michael Vaughan has heaped praise on his bowlers for their part in taking the team to the brink of victory in the first Test against India at Lord's.The tourists were still 98 runs from their second-innings target with just one wicket to spare when the umpires offered them the light midway through the afternoon. The continuing gloomy weather prevented England's attack from getting another chance to wrap up a win but Vaughan had seen enough to build his confidence for the remainder of the series."We had conditions that helped our bowling but they still put the ball in the right areas. They put India's experienced batting line-up under a lot of pressure," he said. The relatively inexperienced quartet of Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett and spinner Monty Panesar dominated one of the best batting line-ups in the world and Vaughan felt he had a full arsenal of tactics at his disposal."We have t

ENGLAND captain Michael Vaughan is set to be fit for next week's first Test with India at Lord's, despite leaving the field with a stiff back while playing for Yorkshire against Lancashire at Old Trafford overnight. Vaughan was off the field on the final day of the first division, county championship Roses match, sparking fears about his readiness for the Test which starts next Thursday. But Yorkshire coach Martyn Moxon said: "He's got a little bit of a stiff back. He's off as a precaution, it's nothing to worry about." Before returning against West Indies at Headingley in May, Vuaghan had missed 18 months of Test cricket, mainly due to persistent knee problems. Agence France-Presse
Michael Vaughan's comments have won him few friends in the north-west
Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes has reacted angrily to claims from England skipper Michael Vaughan that Andrew Flintoff's off-the-field antics ruined the international team's morale during the World Cup.
Flintoff had to be rescued from the sea off Rodney Bay in St Lucia after drunkenly commandeering a pedalo the night after England lost a group game to New Zealand.
Vaughan claimed in an interview with the Guardian that the incident increased the pressure on the squad and team spirit soon began to drain away.
But Cumbes, who deals with Flintoff at county level, believes that the 2005 Ashes hero has been betrayed by his captain.
"I was absolutely staggered when I read that, I just couldn't believe it," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
"It's despicable against a guy like Fred, who over the last few years has given England blood.
"I think Fred will be bitterly hurt by this, because the l
ENGLAND captain Michael Vaughan praised his side's "ruthless" performance after it defeated West Indies by an innings and 283 runs at Headingley today.
The victory, which gave England a 1-0 lead in the four-match series and was a personal triumph for Vaughan, playing his first Test after 18 months out with injury.
Vaughan, 32, scored 103 in England's huge total of 7-570 declared, and then draw level with Peter May's record of 20 wins as England captain.
"I thought we played to a very good standard," Vaughan said of his side.
"We got on top of the West Indies on that very first day. We were ruthless and got the job done.
"When you win by an innings and plenty, it's quite a big defeat for the opposition, but we're only 1-0 up with two to play.
"We've got to do exactly the same in a week's time at Old Trafford (where the third Test starts on June 7)."

Vaughan enjoyed the perfect Test return
Michael Vaughan hit a century on his return to the England Test team after an 18-month absence.
His 102 from 173 balls at a strike rate of 59.53 was his 16th Test hundred, helping England establish a dominant position on the first day of the second Test at his home ground of Headingley.
The 32-year-old England skipper had attracted criticism from some quarters for returning to the Test side without getting into mid-season form for county side Yorkshire.
After missing 16 consecutive Tests because of a recurring knee injury, a hamstring problem and, for the first Test at Lord's, a broken finger, some felt he should have delayed his return.
Instead he answered his critics with a fine innings in Leeds, hitting 11 boundaries in partnerships of 53 with Alastair Cook and 163 with Kevin Pietersen.
Although his footwork looked nervous early on he soon found his confidence after the lunch interval, scoring quickly and looking in complete control
Michael Vaughan is likely to miss the first Test between England and West Indies at Lord's after breaking a finger.
The Yorkshire batsman, who scored 72 in his first inning of the County Championship season yesterday, was looking in reasonable touch in his return to the first-class arena.
However, his presence in the first Test match for England this summer looks in doubt after scans revealed he has suffered a fracture and could be out of action for up to a month.
Yorkshire physio Scott McAllister said he initially did not think the injury was a "serious problem" but a trip to hospital confirmed the worst.
"It's desperately bad luck for Michael after the succession of problems he's had to contend with, and we will be monitoring his progress over the next few days," McAllister told the Yorkshire Post.
"It looks like he might be out for three to four weeks, but it's too early to say with absolute certainty."

AUSTRALIA fast bowler Stuart Clark sent England's injury-jinxed captain Michael Vaughan off to hospital again overnight, this time with a finger injury.
Vaughan, batting for Yorkshire in the English County Championship game against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl, was sent for X-rays on a damaged finger, after being forced to retire hurt.
Vaughan, bidding to bat himself into some form after a woeful World Cup, had scored 16 in Yorkshire's second innings when he was struck on the right hand by a sharply rising Clark ball.
After receiving some onfield treatment Vaughan, who scored 72 in the first innings, opted to carry on, but after one more ball from Clark and two at the other end from James Bruce, he walked off with out adding to his total.
Yorkshire's director of professional cricket, Martyn Moxon, confirmed Vaughan would need hospital attention.
"We are looking at him now but we will be sending him for an X-ray later tonight.
"We will have to wait until tomorrow (
