If we were to list all of the galleries and museums that make up the famous Vatican Museums, it would take up all our time just reading them. And if we listed the many artists and famous art works contained in those galleries, the list would be even longer. The work of the Vatican to list and describe the vast collection in those museums fills entire catalogs.
Today, the Vatican said the theory of evolution is compatible with the Bible but planned no posthumous apology to Charles Darwin for the cold reception they gave him 150 years ago.Christian churches were long hostile to Darwin because his theory conflicted with the literal biblical account of creation. Earlier this week a leading Anglican churchman said the Church of England owed Darwin an apology

The Vatican has issued a statement following last night's vote in General Synod. It is not surprising. Those in the Church of England who put current social mores before church unity and the Catholic Faith are really acting as independent Christians. The Vatican says -We have regretfully learned of the Church of England vote to pave the way for the introduction of legislation which will lead to the
A fake priest was caught trying to hear confessions in St. Peters Basilica, a vatican judge claimed. Judge Judi Galiano stated that the man entered the Basilica and did not raise suspicions at first, due to the fact that he was with a young child, a prostitute and Elton John. The photograph you see here was taken shortly after the mans arrest.

Nothing suggests a good week to come like the Catholic Church calling out "godless" Hollywood — or, more specifically, rebuking Tom Hanks and the rest of the fork-tongued heathens who had requested access to shoot parts of Angels and Demons in a few of Rome's celebrated cathedrals. The Vatican apparently has yet to get over the whole Jesus-was-married thing from The Da Vinci Code, and the pa

There are those within the Catholic Church who are attempting to build a new church in their own image and likeness.
"For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us," Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. Formenti compiles the Vatican's yearbook. He said that Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population - a stable percentage - while Muslims were at 19.2 percent."It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said.Formenti said that the data refer to 2006. The figures on Muslims were put together by Muslim countries and then provided to the United Nations, he said, adding that the Vatican could only vouch for its own data. When considering all Christians and not just Catholi
Without reading too much into these new numbers, what is increasingly apparent and more urgent is for the Ummah to reach out to other religions to begin a serious campaign of dialogue to foster tolerance and peace. Given that Muslims now make up 19.2 percent of the world's population comes the responsibility to be more active in finding solutions to deal with the many religious conflicts around the globe. By the same token, Christians and Jews need to recognize their moral responsibility to do a better job of creating goodwill with Muslims. That means that Saudi King Abdullah's proposal for a series of interfaith conferences to include all religions needs to be taken seriously. Given Saudi Arabia's spotty human rights record it will take a lot of work to get Christian nations to commit reso

John Hooper reports for The Guardian that discussions between Saudis and the Vatican have been held that could lead to churches being built in Saudi Arabia. Churches in the Kingdom? I don't think this so. It's true that during the time of the Prophet Muhammad Christians lived in Madinah and Jews lived nearby, but I think it's highly unlikely that today's Saudis – whether conservative, moderate or militant – would stand for a church to be built in the Land of the Two Holy Mosques. To the average Saudi, the Kingdom has become synonymous with Islam and represents all things Islamic. Millions of Muslims throughout the world look to Saudi Arabia for guidance in Islamic matters. There is no room for a church. Although it's difficult for Saudis to argue with the fact that Muslims can practi

Last week my husband and I were in Rome for few days. We’re Italian and, naturally, in love with our country, so we like to visit it as much as we can. However, there are some things we tend to avoid doing because we think they’re a bit too “touristy”. One of these was undoubtedly the tour of the Vatican Museums. The last time we went we were kids. We visit Rome quite often and for some time had wanted to go back to the Vatican Museum
The Catholic Church first officially started keeping a library around the fourth century. Formed at the height of the first great heresy craze, the contents of this library included a lot of attacks on heretical branches of Christianity and the documents and scriptures used by these heretical branches (which the Church fathers admitted to having read). Looking for an apartment's never easy. But here's a hint if you promise not to tell anybody else: the Vatican's got some good deals. Seriously. Even beyond St. Peters, the Catholic Church owns a lot of pricey real estate in Rome. For years, many of its tenants paid quite reasonable amounts, and they came to believe they were protected from rising rents. But Megan Williams reports now from Rome, their faith was misplaced.
Well, in any airline, really.
Even holy water from the Roman Catholic shrine at Lourdes can’t get by airport security screening passengers for suspicious liquids.
A passenger on a new Vatican-backed charter airline had to hand over a container of water collected at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral to security officials at the airport in southern France on Monday before boarding a return flight to Rome, officials for Mistral Air said. They identified the passenger as Italian television personality Paola Saluzzi.
“All passengers are obliged to respect the rules and not go over the quantities (of liquid) permitted” on flights, said Franck Hourcade, an official at the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees International Airport.
Security measures limiting liquids allowed in carry-on baggage came in response to claims by British police that there was a plot in 2006 to bring down U.S.-bound flights out of London’s Heathrow airport using liquid explosives.
Francesco Pizzo, Mistral Air’s president, sa
Ok this is pretty awesome - turns out in Mexico City a top police sniffer dog was stolen while he was being checked into a plane. That’s right, he cost one druglord a few too much and he got the dog stolen - Rex IV was replaced in it’s cage by a puppy (which was discovered at the other end of the flight). The best part of this was that the dog was part of an elite Mexican drug squad! He was an elite dog! Rights to the movie coming soon. The good news is that they found him in a park a few days later - the bad guys couldn’t bring themselves to kill a dog and the fuzz were onto them so they just tied him to a tree and ran. (both via schneier)
Speaking of flying - this would never have happened if the elite drug squad was flying on the Vatican Airline! That’s right! The Vatican is launching a budget airline (via gridskipper)! More exclamations!! If you wanted to fly the friendly skies, how much more would you rather fly the holy skies?? More question marks?? That&r

Jose Sanchez de Toca y Alameda Pontificalo Council of Culture under-secretary, said that the Vatican “wanted to do its bit to fight pollution on earth and to contribute to improving the planet that God gave to humans so that they could be the servants of nature and not its masters”, even though the Vatican’s emissions were already very low.

A controversy between Scuderia Ferrari and the McLaren-Mercedes team reached High Court in England this week.Ferrari are accusing their former engineer Nigel Stepney in supplying the rival team McLaren's chief designer Mike Coughlan with secret Ferrari technical information in April. It is believed that the 780 page secret material was stored on two computer disks.Ferrari representative, the lawyer Nigel Tozzi told judge Michael Briggs that the Coughlans should not have had documents which were found during the search.Stepney does not plead guilty and denies any wrongdoing. But he is facing a criminal investigation under a separate process in Italy where Ferrari is based. Moreover, Stepney says that Ferrari is terrified that what he has in his mind is valuable. "I guess I know where the bodies have been buried for the last 10 years, there were a lot of controversies." continues Stepney. The FIA is conducting its own investigation into the allegations. I sided with Pope John Paul II who had spoken of the annulment process as one which was being abused:"The ethical question has always been asked very pointedly in any kind of judicial proceedings. In fact, individual or collective interests can induce the parties to resort to various kinds of duplicity and even bribery in order to attain a favorable sentence. Nor are canonical proceedings, in which an attempt is made to discover the truth about whether or not a marriage exists, immune from this risk. The unquestionable importance of this for the moral conscience of the parties involved reduces the likelihood of acquiescence to int
On the one hand, this isn't so bad because God, can, in fact serve as a guide for the mundane situations in life as well as for the great dilemmas.
On the other hand, this makes the Vatican look kind of silly. With all of the problems in the world that require a strong, brave voice, the Vatican tackles driving? What's next, a Vatican proclamation on waiting in line at the post office?
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.
5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.
6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.
7. Support the families of accident victims.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate ti
VATICAN — The Vatican on Tuesday issued a set of “Ten Commandments” for drivers, telling motorists not to kill, not to drink and drive, and to help fellow travelers in case of accidents.
An unusual document from the Vatican’s office for migrants and itinerant people also warned that cars can be “an occasion of sin” — [...]
The following journal entry was written Saturday, August 1, 1998:
Today I woke up early in order to get to the Vatican before any lines formed. Well, there ended up being no wait at either the church or the museums. The walk across Rome to the Vatican City only took about 50 minutes. The piazza and colonnade seemed much smaller than I had thought, after seeing so many pictures. The longer I walked around it, though, the bigger it seemed. The church didn’t seem too impressive from the outside, maybe because the entire front facade was under scaffolding. Once inside, however, the magnitude of the art and architecture became obvious. The floor designs in marble, the size of the statues and the Baldaccino, and ceiling mosaics were indescribable. I couldn’t even take a picture for it would be impossible to capture the experience. The rays of light that came through the glass were very spiritual. Michelangelo’s “Pieta” was beautiful, so delicate (behind the bul
VATICAN CITY, JUN 6, 2007 (VIS) - St. Cyprian, "the first African bishop to achieve the crown of martyrdom," was the subject of Benedict XVI's catechesis during his general audience, held this morning in St. Peter's Square in the presence of 40,000 people.Cyprian, said the Pope, "was born in Carthage to a rich pagan family" and "converted to Christianity at the age of 35. ... He became a priest and later a bishop. In the brief period of his episcopate, he had to face the first two persecutions authorized by imperial edict, that of Decius (250) and that of Valerian (257-258)," following which many faithful "renounced their faith, or at least failed to comport themselves correctly when under trial. These were the so-called 'lapsi,' that is, the 'lapsed'."Cyprian was "severe but not inflexible towards the 'lapsi,' giving them the chance of forgiveness after an exemplary penance." The saint also "showed great humanity and was pervaded by the most authentic evangelical spirit in exh

Long before the Second Vatican Council, when Nazism reared its ugly head and the Jewish People were dehumanized and sent to death camps as part of Hitler's "Final Solution," Pope Pius XI raised his voice:"Pius XI responded by issuing in 1937 the encyclical Mit Brennender Sorge condemning the Nazi ideology of racism and totalitarianism and Nazi violations of the concordat. Copies had to be smuggled into Germany so they could be read from the pulpit. As the extreme nature of Nazi racial anti-Semitism became obvious, and as Mussolini in the late 1930s began imitating Hitler's anti-Jewish race laws in Italy, Pius XI made his position clear, both in Mit Brennender Sorge and in a public address in the Vatican to Belgian pilgrims in 1938: "Mark well that in the Catholic Mass, Abraham is our Patriarch and forefather. Anti-Semitism is incompatible with the lofty thought which that fact expresses. It is a movement with which we Christians can have nothing to do. No, no, I say to you it is impos
