Two years ago Bungalow Records, inspired by the wayward Japanese pop of, among others, the Pizzicato 5, DJ Towa Tei and Haruomi Hosono, released a compilation entitled Sushi 3003. It provided a fantastic glimpse into the world of underground Japanese pop. Subtitled The Return of Spectacular Japanese Clubpop, this follow-up - Sushi 4004, of course - provides another snapshot of the music scene centred on Tokyo's mega-trendy Shibuya district, home to dozens of the world's coolest record stores, designer clothes outlets and clubs. The wonderful thing about this scene is that its ability to synthesize so many influences - krautrock, electronica, hip-hop, jungle, kitschedelia, easy listening, glam, electro - and turn the results into something at once utterly exotic and totally familiar: irresistably danceable pop. Featured artists include the phenomenal Cornelius, stars of the scene Pizzicato 5, Midnight Bowlers, Hi-Posi, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Yoshinori Sunahara, Man From Electone,
Bungalow have a reputation for releasing amazing records, it is well deserved. As implied by the title of this CD all the artists featured are Japanese, what's more, all are fabulous. It includes better known J-Pop names such as pop dilettante Kahimi Karie who sings her big hit "Good Morning World" (which started it's life as a make-up commercial in Japan), there's the incredible Pizzicato Five representing the Shibuya region and pop superstar Cornelius. There's also loads of bands not as familiar, but equally wonderful. I love what Les 5-4-3-2-1 does with Bacharach's "Bond Street " (turning it into a go-go classic that owes a very large and obvious debt to Stereolab's "Ping Pong"), Date of Birth supply "Aim At El Paso", which sounds like a groovy reworking of Morricone's "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" and Hajime Tachibana's version of "Moog Power" is a worthy salute to the song's composer Hugo Montenegro. Like his screen-writing brethren Cameron Crowe, Quentin Tarantino, and David Chase, filmaker Wes Anderson uses music as an integral part of his work. For THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS soundtrack, Anderson re-teams with Devo founder Mark Mothersbaugh for a mix of original instrumentals and semi-obscure cuts reminiscent of the duo's prior collaboration on the music for RUSHMORE.For this bittersweet black comedy centered on the dysfunctional relationship between the children and parents of the Tenenbaum brood, some of rock's moodiest performers were tapped.The soundtrack is bookended by a pair of Jackson Browne covers given a characteristically Teutonic reading by Nico ("These Days," "The Fairest Of The Seasons"). When David Russell's I Heart Huckabees launched its ad campaign, the wacky-wistful commercials used what you could call "Wes Anderson music"-- 1960s/70s folk pop, light but not MOR, the kind of song that has a strong kick but soft edges. The music to films like Rushmore complimented a style that's drily bittersweet, and so quirky that his critics say he cushions his blows: the plot devices of giant aquariums and Jaguar sharks are too fantastic, real people don't live in the Franny & Zooey world of The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene Hackman never comes out and calls Danny Glover a "nigger," and on and on. Meanwhile, the legion of Anderson's fans who dig the quirk also appreciate the understated but real sadness that runs through the films-- the genuine emotion that's fed by botched dreams and unexpected, unremarkable deaths. Breaking For the Holidays is a collection of all-new recordings by 10 artists, the first seasonal release from New York-based Breaking Records. The album will be released Tuesday, November 21, 2006. Composer Charles Clouser has returned, providing the film with a whole lot of tripped-out, electronic and orchestral tension and the soundtrack with one measly passage called the "Sh*! hole Theme," but its' alternative/industrial/death metal that provides the third installment of the popular horror series with the kick in the gut it needs. As usual, the songs are of the "inspired by" type, meaning that most of them have little or nothing to do with the film itself, but the incorporation of hard-hitting classic acts like Slayer ("Eyes of the Insane"), Helmet ("Monochrome"), and Ministry ("Fear Is a Big Business"), as well standout contemporary acts like Mastodon and Meshuggah into the mix helps keep some of the lesser locker room me
