A class tour of Vancouver’s impoverished Downtown Eastside has led two UBC students to draft a human-rights complaint that will be filed against Canada before the United Nations. The complaint will be brought before the UN Human Rights Council by the Impact on Community Coalition, Pivot Legal Society, and the Carnegie Community Action Project. These groups have been critical of the adverse impact of the 2010 Olympics on housing. “This is just disheartening,” UBC political-science student Mike Powar told the Georgia Straight , referring to the housing problem not only in the Downtown Eastside but also in the Metro Vancouver area.

But local experts say signs of an improving spring market are already evident. “We’re hearing reports that more people are attending open houses and inquiring about property,” said Sandy Hendrick, executive director of the Clark County Association of Realtors. Those brighter signs follow a dismal start to the year. Once again the turn around is right around the corner.Membership in the Realtors group has declined right along with home sales, dropping by about 7 percent to 1,870 members, Hendrick said. “We were projecting a 10 percent decline, but it has not been that much,” he said.
