Christmas Eve, and what an appropriate topic. If you’re in your cubicle reading this, my condolences: I was actually in that same position last year as well. But most bankers, believe it or not, are actually on vacation right about now.
Vacation? Yes. It does exist, even in this job. Beyond just the typical “How many hours each week do Investment Bankers work?” questions, this is another common one I hear. Can you actually take a vacation as an Analyst? Do you ever get any time off? Can you go home for the holidays?

Atlantis Lodge was just outstanding! I finally got around to unloading the camera.
The lodge is 1960s — original. If you’re not into retro, you will still like this place. It was clean, right on the beach, quiet at night, had an outstanding pool, wonderful beach view from our balcony/porch, a bird sanctuary below our window — we woke to the sounds of gabillions of birds each morning.
Nice place. Nice rest. Go there. No wait… do not go there. You might be the last room available on the weekend we get a chance to get away again. Stay home.

Yesterday I wrote, Are You Taking Enough Vacation? My answer to that was “no, I am not!” Well, thankfully, my wife and I have an upcoming two week vacation, and we are very excited about it.
While I admit I haven’t been taking enough time awayfrom work, I don’t think I am alone in this. Matt, the author of the personal finance blog To One Million and Beyond, made the comment on my earlier post that people in North America don’t take nearly enough time off, and that many Europeans receive more vacation days from their employers and generally take longer vacations.
I agree. I lived in England for around 2 years, and I have traveled throughout much of Europe. There are actually times when entire towns virtually shut down because most people are on vacation! In fact, over 50% of Italians take a 2-4 week vacation during August! In my opinion, they are doing something right over in Italy. Taking time off is very important for the body, mind, and soul.

Yes, again! This time I will be cruising the Mediterranean. Spending most of my time in Italy it seems. As always I will take lots of pictures and post them for those interested.

I'll be taking a vacation next week, from the 24th of July 'till the 31st and I guess the point will be to not even look at a computer during said time. It's going to be extremely hard and I'll probably get some sort of breakdown because of it...but I'm going to try to make this an actual vacation.But don't worry. While I'll be sleeping like that gentleman pictured there, you'll be in good hands. I got some people lined up to hold down the fort in the meantime, and I'm sure that they'll do a much better job than me.
