Although Web usability has received lots of hype, especially during the dot-com meltdown, the focus has been mostly on technical issues. Usability experts stress the pitfalls of frames and too many images on Web pages. They recommend editing out unnecessary words and writing in a non-linear style-all valuable advice, of course. But less frequently do they highlight the importance of the visual pre

Richard Bray - CIO Government Review, April 28, 2008 - Usability is critical for good mobile security. The consequences of a data breach can be far-reaching and complex, but in almost every case the cause is simple. An employee, the 'average user', has either taken a shortcut around the security procedures or lost a device with critical data in a public place, or both.
Randy Sutton of Ottawa's Elytra Enterprises asks, "How many laptops got lost this week? How many have been stolen? We don't hear a lot about it in Canada, particularly in the government, because nobody wants to report it and there's no legislation forcing you to report." Sutton keeps a list he calls 'theft a day' and it's a rare day when he can't add another breach somewhere in the world that'

No matter how brilliant your website design is, if it is hard to reach the content of your site then your site is as useful as an empty shell. Here are some tips to improve the usability of your website to ensure it serves its functions optimally. The first method is to make sure the typography of your content is suitable. If you have large blocks of text, make sure to use CSS to space out the lines accordingly. The longer a single line of text is, the greater the line-height of each line should be. Also, make sure the font size of your text is big enough to read easily. Some sites have 10-pixel-tall text in Verdana font; while that may look neat and tidy, you have to really strain your eyes to read the actual text.Make it easy for visitors to find content that they want on your site. It seems to save a record, we need to click Apply to end edit mode, then click Save to save record then click Okay to dismiss the form?? It is common to see business applications with unnecessary complexity.I guess the common approach is to have a Customer list plus a pop-up edit form after select a record. Recently, I rolled out the new version of my application to clients. The biggest change I made from previous version is allow the users to edit directly on the data grid listing but I keep the pop-up edit forms for 'backward-compatibility'. The nature of updating a page dynamically using data retrieved via AJAX interactions and DHTML may result in drastically changing the appearance and state of a page. A user might choose to use the browser's back or forward buttons, bookmark a page, copy the URL from the URL bar and share it with a friend via an email or chat client, or print a page at any given time. When designing an AJAX based application you need to consider what the expected behavior would be in the case of navigation, bookmarking, printing, and browser support as described below.* Navigation - What would be the expected behavior of the back, forward, refresh, and bookmark browser buttons in your application design. While you could implement history manipulation manually it may be easer to use a JavaScript frameworks such as Dojo that provides API's history manipulation and navigation control.* Bookmarking and URL sharing - Many users want to bookmark or cut and paste the URL from the browser bar. Hello all... this morning I'm sharing with you a great article I just read regarding the importance of website usability and accessibility. After spending so much time focused on SEO and Internet marketing, an often overlooked aspect is onsite conversion. Attracting visitors to your website is the first step, getting them to stay and convert is the second. In previous posts I've spent much of the time speaking about attracting visitors, improving search result placements and so on. Now its time to focus on making your site user friendly and easy to navigate. Keep in mind the concept of the purchase decision process - what is yours? What path must prospective customers take to review and purchase your product? These are the questions you must ask yourself and design your site accordingly to streamline the process and create a GREAT user experience. So you've optimised your website, done the keyword research, got the backlinks and everything is ethical. You're sitting proudly on the first page of the search results. Or you've set up a pay per click campaign, bid on your keywords, created some ads and performance tracking is in place. Again, you're at the top of the pile. Either way, you're visible and people are visiting your website. But visitors aren't converting into leads, prospects or customers. What's going wrong? Well your website may be visible, but is it connecting?Having attracted visitors to your website through prominent search engine placements, it is vital not to lose them by failing to connect. Different visitors will have different priorities and levels of satisfaction. In order to reach and retain as many as possible and to maximise the chances of conversion, you should consider your site's usability and accessibility.Web usabilityUsability is all about providing your visitors with an effective, efficient

I have been doing a lot of reading lately about search, marketing, usability, landing pages, conversion rates, etc, to keep myself up to date with the latest on SEO/SEM. That’s one of the reasons I have not been posting with frequency, hope to be able to do it again by next January.
Meanwhile I wanted to share with you a fun resource, it’s about a series of quizzes on personal health, finances and a tool to check whether or not you have a family friendly Blog. I had fun, plus found a few great tips to think about and improve my health and my finances.

You can't break the rules till you've learned the rules
Usability, as you hopefully know, is all about making sure that the people who come to your website can find the information or product they want, and ensuring they can find it quickly, efficiently, and with minimal hair-tearing.
Unfortunately, some people just don't know the guidelines, or just don't follow them. This can lead to a lot of frustration on the part of the user, and if users are frustrated, then chances are good they won't be back to your site. Whether you're building a new site or redesigning an old one, here are a few usability tips you should be keeping in mind.
Consistency
Consistency is one of the most important aspects of usability. The page style, text style, colors and navigation should be consistent throughout your entire site. Not only does this help with usability, but it will also help with building your brand online. By using those visual cues throughout your site, peopl

Planning an online business? I use to advise my friends and customers concerning this great “adventure”.
Many times they introduce me to their terrific projects and, when defining their online strategy, they fail in some little usability things.
Even I use to tell what I think and criticize these issues, many times my advices are not implemented because they suppose their original idea is great.
I recently find this article in Smashing Magazine that resumes the common usability issues I criticize when I find them in the project I received: 10 Usability Nightmares You Should Be Aware Of
It presents the most common usability nightmares everyone should avoid when designing functional and usable web sites. Please, take a carefully look and know how I think!.

Unlike web accessibility which impacts directly upon disabled users, web usability affects all users, and can be defined as a measure of how easy it is for a generic site visitor to carry out a task such as finding a given piece of information or buying a certain product.• Consistent placement of navigation and page structure• People read left to right, top to bottom • People scan copy looking for relevant links [headings and bulletpoints are good devices . . .] • Therefore: most important screen area = top left • Create a logical screen hierarchy [following the above points] • Clearly title all your content, and pages • Keep your content concise • Features supported by images can be very eye catching • Use general language [avoid technical jargon where possible] • Consider what your audience are likely to be looking for • Users are impatient. The Firefox browser succeeds because it’s designed for everyone to use and is a labour of love, the founder and president of Mozilla told attendees of a Westminster eForum on open source software in London yesterday.
The browser, which saw its 400 millionth download earlier this week, has 110 million active users and 18 per cent of the market share for browsers, Tristan Nitot told the audience.

What do all web browsers have in common? They look for certain consistencies across websites. These consistencies are in core elements that make navigation and utilization efficient and allows them to find information quickly In this post, Richard Hill suggests a number of ways that you can re-design your website in order to achieve improved usability and layout without starting from scratch. Here are his key suggestions.. Simple Navigation Navigation that is clear and consistent. Probably the worst issue is 'lost visitors' – those who are in a maze and don't know where they are in the site. The site should always allow users to easily return to the home page and preferably get to any page with a single click. Studies have shown that users want to find things quickly, and this means that they prefer menus with intuitive ranking, organization and multiple choices to many layers of simplified menus. The menu links should be placed in a consistent position on every page. Cla

Professor Richard Bellaver of Ball State University - an expert in software usability - has been conducting a series of usability studies with children in a local school (see Richard Bellaver Current Endeavors). They are reported in TeleRead - the first report was Kids and e-books: Good news from Ball State’s e-dictionary studies and the repeat study is Students favor e-books over paper books in yet another BSU study: Lesson for K-12 and publishers? The first report was published in September 2006, and covers comparison dictionary studies conducted at the Huffer Memorial Children’s Center in Muncie Indiana and Kennard Elementary School in Kennard Indiana in the Spring of 2006. A third comparison dictionary study was conducted with adult users at Ball State University. All three studies showed that experience in using eBooks is the key to speed of usage. And definitely the new age mobile phones are like a computer that offer multimedia as well as digital features and more. With the change in the mobile technology and as consumers are finding more options – consumers preferences are also changing. Recently, Yahoo! and Google have both been adding new options to their search engine result pages (SERPs). These options include Google’s PlusBox and and Yahoo’s Quicklinks. Illustrated below is Google’s PlusBox for Walmart. They have a PlusBox for their stock quote that expands to give stock information. Along with that, they have category or sub-page links within their site. Google typically does this for strong authorative Websites with a high amount of Trust Rank.
Another example below shows Google’s PlusBox being used for localized search. They have a PlusBox that shows the localized listing in the SERPs with their map, address, and phone number. You don’t have to be an extreme authority to have a PlusBox with this type of localized integration.
Yahoo’s Quick Links are similar to Google showing subpages for authorative sites. However, Yahoo! will also be charging for these Quick Links if you’re a site that doesn

But everyone listened. The best-selling usability guru is back and has revisited his classic guide, joined forces with Web usability consultant Hoa Loranger, and created an updated
Google may have an overwhelming market share in the online search market, the company has been famously incapable of making as much as a dent in areas such as web mail, or instant messaging.Yahoousability Yahoo's Jeff Bonforte today offered some free advice on what caused this failure: a complete lack of usability.Google is ruled by engineers, but they make for a lousy target audience because they will try any new application that has a blinking light and makes rattling sounds. The challenge is to get to the masses. In the video below Bonforte explains the challenges that Yahoo is facing, as well as Google's faillure in web usability.http://bollywoodjunction.blogspot.com/atom.xml
I guess Yahoo felt they needed to be in the news this week - no matter what the reason. It’s the only explanation I can think of for Yahoo’s Jeff Bonforte, senior director of real time communications, attacking Google’s usability efforts. “[Google] definitely is lacking in usability,” Bonforte said in a meeting with reporters at Yahoo’s corporate headquarters. “They don’t have this intimate connection in usability with consumers that Yahoo has had for 10 years. When it comes to consumer applications, no-one is more successful than Yahoo hands down. And it happens over and over and over again. In every application, we are number one or two.”I can’t resist pointing out something interesting about Bonforte.
