An employee, the 'average user', has either taken a shortcut around the security procedures or lost a device with critical data in a public place, or both. We don't hear a lot about it in Canada, particularly in the government, because nobody wants to report it and there's no legislation forcing you to report." Sutton keeps a list he calls 'theft a day' and it's a rare day when he can't add another breach somewhere in the world that'

      Seven Guidelines for Website Usability
http://www.xeal.com You can't break the rules till you've learned the rules Usability, as you hopefully know, is all about making sure that the people who come to your website can find the information or product they want, and ensuring they can find it quickly, efficiently, and with minimal hair-tearing. Unfortunately, some people just don't know the guidelines, or just don't follow them. This can lead to a lot of frustration on the part of the user, and if users are frustrated, then chances are good they won't be back to your site. Whether you're building a new site or redesigning an old one, here are a few usability tips you should be keeping in mind. Consistency Consistency is one of the most important aspects of usability. The page style, text style, colors and navigation should be consistent throughout your entire site. Not only does this help with usability, but it will also help with building your brand online. By using those visual cues throughout your site, peopl

So another way of looking at what makes a good website is to describe it in new terms. A good website is: Search engine optimizedAccessibleUsable Many of the factors that make a site better at one of these also improve it in another, there is lots of overlap between them. For example, a site that is (x)html semantically structured (the xhtml explains the document, not how it looks) will be easily

10 Usability Nightmares You Should Be Aware Of
Planning an online business? I use to advise my friends and customers concerning this great “adventure”. Many times they introduce me to their terrific projects and, when defining their online strategy, they fail in some little usability things. Even I use to tell what I think and criticize these issues, many times my advices are not implemented because they suppose their original idea is great. I recently find this article in Smashing Magazine that resumes the common usability issues I criticize when I find them in the project I received: 10 Usability Nightmares You Should Be Aware Of It presents the most common usability nightmares everyone should avoid when designing functional and usable web sites. Please, take a carefully look and know how I think!. Source: Smash Magazine

      Web Design & Usability Guidelines
Unlike web accessibility which impacts directly upon disabled users, web usability affects all users, and can be defined as a measure of how easy it is for a generic site visitor to carry out a task such as finding a given piece of information or buying a certain product.• Consistent placement of navigation and page structure• People read left to right, top to bottom • People scan copy looking for relevant links [headings and bulletpoints are good devices . . .] • Therefore: most important screen area = top left • Create a logical screen hierarchy [following the above points] • Clearly title all your content, and pages • Keep your content concise • Features supported by images can be very eye catching • Use general language [avoid technical jargon where possible] • Consider what your audience are likely to be looking for • Users are impatient. Design for a 2-10 second maximum download. Reuse header graphics so they can load from cache. Avoid excessive s

How to Redesign Your Website for Usability
What do all web browsers have in common? They look for certain consistencies across websites. These consistencies are in core elements that make navigation and utilization efficient and allows them to find information quickly In this post, Richard Hill suggests a number of ways that you can re-design your website in order to achieve improved usability and layout without starting from scratch. Here are his key suggestions.. Simple Navigation Navigation that is clear and consistent. Probably the worst issue is 'lost visitors' – those who are in a maze and don't know where they are in the site. The site should always allow users to easily return to the home page and preferably get to any page with a single click. Studies have shown that users want to find things quickly, and this means that they prefer menus with intuitive ranking, organization and multiple choices to many layers of simplified menus. The menu links should be placed in a consistent position on every page. Cla

      Updates on Click2Voice Online Usability
(Archived in: Online Usability Technology in Plain English)I recently have had a few email exchanges with the developer of Click2Voice explaining the various scenarios for both domestic and international calling using this free VoIP service. I have copied the illustrations below along with the email dialog. First a few comments. Cick2Voice individual calls are limited to 10 to 15 minutes per call. However, there currently is no limit to the number of calls per day. The acronym 'us pstn” below is an acronym for U.S. Public Switched Telephone Network. Just think of it as infrastructure. I am not sure why the word “skype” is half orange and half blue, but I left the information below exactly the way it was sent except for adding a few links.Answers to Click2Voice Email Query: “The significance of having a SkypeIn number (or any VOIP softphone with a U.S. phone number for that matter) is to give someone in another country a phone number in the United States. Since I provide U

      Schweinebauch Usability.
Schweinebauch [...]

Online Usability of the Many Up and Coming Search Engine Models
(Archived in: Online Usability Weblogs and Business)Some attention is being given to things other than Google. Hakia, Snap, and even Clipmarks, are just a few of the newer search tools that are getting noticed for good reason. Snap has been used in the Digital Nomad blogs. It is an easy way to search and bookmark topical information.Much hope is also out there for new SE competition from the likes of Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame and a Wiki-type search engine. Search Wikia is not the final result, and the project originally was promoted as Wikiasari (see "Wikiasari-Wikipedia Founder launching a Google Rival") return to this post. Now, what is exciting about all of this is it confirms that there is plenty of room for alternative search models not based entirely on indexing. Hakia is interesting because it is based on artificial intelligence. Additionally, the idea that socially driven search engines could become a Web 2.0 alternative to Google and Yahoo is pretty intriguing.Profy.com b
