      Nuke The United Nations...Metaphorically, Naturally
~Snooper~Metaphorically, the nuking of the United Nations has been my adult life's dream. My first look into the United Nations was when I was in High School some 40 years ago. I discovered, wrote about and was severely chastised by the Sociology teacher in regards to my term paper. How dare I speak badly of the United Nations? In front of the whole class she read bits and pieces from my paper

Midday Open Thread: The United States, Palestinian Aid and the United Nations
Ever vigilant in its role as protector of the poor, the tired and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the United States is urging Arab nations to make good on their pledged aid contributions to Palestine. US officials say that of $717m promised by Arab League members, only $153m of Arab pledges have been delivered, all from three countries: Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Algeria. Their failure to deliver has tangible consequences: British aid agencies warned that ordinary life in Gaza was becoming "intolerable". "Only a trickle of medicine, food, fuel and other goods is being allowed in," warned a statement from agencies including Oxfam and Christian Aid. "It has made people highly dependent on food aid, and brought the health system and basic services such as water and sanitation nea

United Nations Warns of New Food Crisis
Conservative Leader says that Food Security should rank alongside Energy Policy and National Security.THE UN World Food Programme (WFP) is to hold an emergency meeting in Rome today, as rising food prices across the world threaten to create a new constituency of millions of city-dwellers who are unable to afford basic foodstuffs. The Organization for Economic and Co-operative Development (OECD) has warned that food prices could rise by between one fifth and one half over the next ten years. The sudden leap in the worldwide price of grain and other basic foodstuffs could mean that millions of hitherto relatively affluent people in cities would not be able to afford food, Greg Barrow, a London-based spokesman for the WFP, said on Tuesday. He said the key factors behind the price-shift were:•

United Nations Declares 2008 the International Year of Languages
A post on one of my favorite blogs brought to my attention the fact that 2008 has been declared "The International Year of Languages" by the United Nations. Cool. Part of the UN's goal for declaring an international year of language involves "eliminating the disparity between the use of English and the use of the five other official languages." The other 5 official languages of the UN are Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish. Not surprisingly the resolution was introduced by France's representative, who maintained that it "would ensure a 'global' approach to multilingualism and would promote a reasonable vision of multilingualism at the United Nations." Support for the resolution came from representatives of Tunisia, Andorra, Russian Federation, Romania and Senegal, who "stressed

United Nations Calls for a Global Carbon Tax
I have long held the belief that global warming was a hoax designed to tax the shit out of us. Have you ever noticed that all of the solutions to global warming involve you and I paying more taxes? Now the UN has said that a global carbon tax is needed to save the planet. A global tax on carbon dioxide emissions was urged to help save the Earth from catastrophic man-made global warming at the United Nations climate conference.  A panel of UN participants on Thursday urged the adoption of a tax that would represent “a global burden sharing system, fair, with solidarity, and legally binding to all nations.”  Personally I don’t see how a United States citizen could be legally bound to pay a tax to any other entity besides the United State government. Isn’t that part of what triggered the Revolutionary War? Now they are telling us we will be legally bound to pay this bounty? Rest assured that if any Democrat is elected president we will be paying this tax. After all,

CLIMATE CHANGE: United Nations Kicks Off Global Warming Conference to Build New Climate Agreement
Faced with melting polar ice caps and worsening droughts, climate experts at a massive United Nations conference Monday urged quick action toward a new international pact stemming an increasingly destructive rise in world temperatures.A key goal of the two-week conference, which opened with delegates from nearly 190 countries in attendance, will be to draw a skeptical United States into an agreement to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases. While the U.S. delegation declared it would not be a "roadblock" to a new agreement, Washington remains opposed to steps many other countries support, such as mandatory emissions cuts by rich nations and a target for limiting the rise in global temperatures. The American position suffered a blow Monday when the new Australian prime minister signed papers to ratify the Kyoto Protocol climate pact. The move leaves the U.S. the world's top emitter of greenhouse gases as the sole industrial power not to have joined.Conferen

CLIMATE CHANGE: United Nations May Change Emission Rules to Lure U.S.
The United Nations, manager of the world's second-biggest emissions-trading system, may change its rules from 2013 to encourage the U.S. to join an effort to stem climate change, an official who heads the program said. New technology, such as equipment to capture carbon dioxide from power stations and store it underground, may be deemed worthy of generating emission credits automatically, Halldor Thorgeirsson, head of emissions trading at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said in an interview. That may help reduce U.S. skepticism of UN-generated emissions credits and make investments in new technology more profitable, eliminating barriers for the U.S. to join international emissions-trading to slow global warming. Granting certain ``benchmarked'' technology some credits would ``allow for significant scaling up'' of emission trading, Thorgeirsson said. ``In the tool box of the future, you will need differen

United Nations Cannot Feed the World Because of Environmentalists and Big Government Policies
The United Nations recently claimed that rising food prices has hindered it from fighting famine in Africa and other regions around the world. It simply can no longer afford it as a result of environmentalists pushing biofuel and ethanol. One of the United Nations’ bureaucratic heads was quoted saying, “In a world where our contributions are holding fairly steady, this [cost of grain] means we are able to reach far less people.” This was so predictable it is astounding. But, I guess liberals will keep trying to push their big government policies and killing people as usual. On paper you clearly did not need Nostradamus to tell you this plan would lead to disaster. First, the environmentalists encourage people in growing populations to use their food supply as fuel, thereby reducing the supply. People still need to eat, so the price rises. When poor people cannot afford the food they starve. Then add to this brilliant plan a massive bureaucratic nightmare known as the United

United Nations Orders Terrorists to Their Rooms Without Supper
The United Nations Security Council issued today a “strong” condemnation of the terrorist attacks that killed six UN peacekeepers from Spain in southern Lebanon. I am curious if the United Nation’s next step is to sentence the terrorists to timeout? Maybe they will send a “surge” of peacekeeper reinforcements armed with really expensive clipboards? Jimmy Carter can offer to build the terrorists a nice home if they cooperate. In all seriousness, however, the United Nations has become an abject embarrassment. While the UN’s purpose may be laudable, in practice the UN cannot solve any world conflicts without direct American involvement. For example, about a decade ago, genocide took place in Europe and in Rwanda. Yet, the United Nations sought diplomacy. As expected, it was not until brute force was used that the genocide stopped. Presently, 200,000 people have been brutally murdered in Sudan; Iran threatens to wipe Israel off the Map; and Women are brutalized thr

United Nations Wants Plans to Stop Violence in Somalia!
The United Nations has been asked by the Security Council to come up with plans for UN peacekeepers in Somalia by the middle of June if the members decide that the current conditions will require this. Since February over 350,000 people have left Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, but the council says that they are still a ways away from authorizing military action in the African nation. In a statement the UN Security Council asked the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to start “appropriate contingency planning for a possible United Nations mission, to be deployed if the Security Council decided to authorize such a mission.” Since the fall of Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 Somalia has been in constant chaos.  The Islamist militia took over Mogadishu last year but over the New Year the interim government of President Abdullahi Yusuf, with the support of Ethiopian troops, took control.  Since then there has been constant battling between the Ethiopian/Somali troops a
