Britain's defence ministry has raised objections over proposals to ramp up the proportion of the country's energy produced by wind farms, because of concerns over the impact of the turbines on military radar, The Times reported on Monday.A spokesman for Britain's business ministry conceded there had been "issues" regarding potential sites for wind farms, and military radar systems. The Ministry of Defence (MoD), however, insisted that all applications for new wind farms would be assessed on a "site-by-site" basis."The MoD is committed to government targets for renewable energy and whenever possible we seek to work with wind farm developers to find a mutually acceptable solution," an MoD spokesman said.According to The Times, the defence ministry has objected to at least four proposed sites

Britain has proposed relaxing rules governing tax relief on the cost of decommissioning oil fields, to remove a time limit that encourages companies to decommission early and leave oil in the ground. In a paper released on Thursday, the UK Treasury proposed an extension of the so-called three-year loss carry-back rules for North Sea firms.Currently, companies can only claim decommissioning costs against profits made in the final three years before decommissioning. As profitability declines at the end of a field's life, the last three years' profits may not be enough to absorb the costs, whereas early decommissioning would allow offset against a healthier profit stream."As a consequence, this is likely to lead in a number of cases to premature decommissioning," the Treasury added, saying the conclusions followed consultation with industry.North Sea oil and gas production is currently in decline, encouraging the big oil companies such as Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc, which developed

Rising energy prices are making it difficult in Britain to justify a cut in interest rates, according to the Bank of England's deputy governor Rachel Lomax. Lomax, who is a member of The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) that decides on interest rates, said there were always risks at a time of rising energy prices. "Soaring oil prices were an important reason why some members of the MPC, including myself, were reluctant to cut interest rates when the economy slowed in 2005," she told the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce in northern England on Thursday. The deputy governor was also one of the seven MPC members who voted to keep rates on hold earlier this month, against two who argued for a cut. She said there is a great deal of uncertainty about the effects of the recent turbulence and this must be weighed against the inflationary effects of rising energy prices as oil approaches 100 dollars a barrel. British business have been hoping for a cut in interest rates for the last few

The thing about going green is you have to find various ways to be able to promote the ecology issue the world has to deal with today. The United Kingdom has acknowledged such a need and has moved forward by introducing its first eco-friendly school.
With this it is apparent that the UK is dead-set in starting to educate young minds on the pros and cons of eco-friendly living.
FIRST Minister Alex Salmond today opened a new “eco-school” in the Lothians and declared it would make youngsters more environmentally aware.
Windygoul Primary in Tranent is fitted with solar panels for electricity and hot water, and “breathing walls” to provide a toxin-free environment.

Shares in BP fell yesterday after a newspaper reported that the oil company's chief executive had warned staff of poor third-quarter results. The Financial Times said CEO Tony Hayward told a staff meeting in Houston that he planned a shakeup of the company's structure after its worst financial performance in 15 years. Hayward told staff that third-quarter revenues, due to be announced October 23, would be 'dreadful' and that BP needed to streamline its overly complicated structure. OPEC's extra oil announced this month has come too late to help bring oil prices down over the winter and at best, will prevent them from rising much higher than they already are, the Center for Global Energy Studies (CGES) warned Monday. "The promised increase in output will do nothing to slow the rise in oil prices until at least the middle of next year, by which time they could be well on their way to 100 dollars per barrel (dpb)," Center for Global Energy Studies said in its latest monthly report. The ten member organization agreed to raise their aggregate oil output by 0.5 million barrels per day (bpd) with effect from the beginning of November. The London-based centre said the production increase should result in additional oil actually appearing on the market, but that it had little discernible impact on the market with concerns that the increase will reach consuming countries until early 2008. "In the longer term, there is fear about the strength of global economic growth

Buy-recommended BP offers unlevered appreciation potential of 17% to estimated net present value [NPV] of $87 a share, revised up from $80 a share on May 29 when we raised longterm oil price to $66 a barrel from $60. Second quarter results reported on July 24 trace a rising trend in unlevered cash flow (Ebitda) connected primarily to crude oil price.Concentrated 59% on oil production, NPV for the mega cap stock looks slightly high compared to our estimates for some thirty other producers. Resolution of a dispute over Kovykta, a large undeveloped natural gas field in Russia, improves BP’s prospects for profit as half-owner of large Russian producer, TNK-BP.New Chief Executive Tony Hayward also strives to restore operating shortfalls in refining that contributed to higher industry margins, but limited incremental profit for BP. While on this last trip to Europe, I had two radio interviews in the U.K. One interview will hopefully be able to be posted by the end of the week. Once that interview has been aired, we will try to get it recorded and posted as well.
Laura and I are quite worn out and are looking forward to being back at home for a couple of weeks before we resume our schedule of visiting other areas up until the time of the Feast of Tabernacles.

On last Monday, Laura and I flew to Belfast, Ireland, so that we could meet with some new people there. While there, I again had the opportunity of baptizing some new people: four in all.
Oil, nickel and copper, among the best-performing commodities of the past five years, led declines in commodity prices today on concern losses in global financial markets will cut demand for raw materials.Crude oil in New York dropped 3.2 percent as Tropical Storm Erin moved away from rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Nickel tumbled 5.3 percent to its lowest in a year and copper slid 7.8 percent, the most since October 2004, leading a third day of metal declines in London. Gold fell for a fourth day, and silver was the biggest loser, dropping 8.4 percent.Investors are selling all but the safest assets to cover losses as banks put a squeeze on credit amid rising U.S. subprime loan defaults. The Morgan Stanley Capital International World Index, a global stock market benchmark, dropped 1.4 percent today and is down 11 percent since peaking on July 16. The UBS Bloomberg CMCI Index of 28 commodities has lost 6.9 percent in the past month.``Investors are looking for liquidity and commodities are g

British energy supplier International Power has taken a leap into the wind power super league–a sector that has thrived in Europe, thanks to concerns about global warming, the supply of oil, and the continent’s increasing dependence on Russia for its gas supplies.International Power agreed to buy Trinergy, which has wind farm projects in Italy and Germany for 868 million euros ($1.2 billion) over the weekend, making it one of the world’s largest producers of wind energy. The news was welcomed by the markets, on an otherwise gloomy day. Its shares topped the gainers in early afternoon trading in London, rising 14.50 pence (30 cents), or 3.4%, to £4.41 ($8.96).Trinergy is being acquired from private investors linked to the Matrix Group and CJS Capital Partners, and is being funded through the acquisition of £202 million ($410.2 million) in debt, and the company’s own liquid resources. The market thumbs up reflects confidence in International Power’s decision to firm up its f

Shell has produced a stunning financial performance over the second quarter of the year with profits soaring by 20% to $7.6bn (£3.7bn) on the back of very high refining margins and despite a fall in production. The record results – amounting to some £1.5m an hour – underlined Shell's current supremacy over arch-rival BP which barely lifted its profits when measured on the same basis. They also outpaced US oil giant Exxon Mobil, which caught Wall St on the hop this afternoon with a fall in its quarterly profits instead of the expected rise. At $10.3bn, Exxon's profits remain comfortably ahead of Shell's, however. The Anglo-Dutch group raised its dividend 14% to $0.36 per share and gave an upbeat assessment of future prospects."We continue to see competitive growth opportunities based on our technological strengths by making disciplined capital choices in an industry landscape of both higher energy prices and higher costs," said chief executive Jeroen van der Veer. The $7.6bn ea
Shares in French steel tube specialist Vallourec looked more than wobbly on Friday after a bubble of expectation surrounding a takeover bid from Arcelor Mittal burst. The world's number one steel firm opted for a light lunch instead: two steel tube businesses belonging to Vallourec, bought for an undisclosed sum. After three months of trading above 220 euros ($304), the bottom fell out of Vallourec's share price on Friday when it closed down 11.11 euros ($15.36), or 4.9%, to 216.18 euros ($298.81). The stock was the worst finisher in Paris' CAC 40 index, which closed down 1.8%, or 108.34 points. Arcelor Mittal ticked down 31 eurocents (43 cents), or 0.65%, to 47.56 euros ($65.74).Investors dropped the stock after news that Arcelor Mittal had signed a preliminary agreement to acquire Precision Soudage and Composants Automobiles Vitry, two fully-owned subsidiaries of Vallourec. The divisions' annual sales are 100 million euros and 45 million euros respectively, and employ 550 peo
Could gas bills heat up again? British Gas has introduced a tracker tariff that will follow wholesale energy prices, just as experts warn that they could go up again after 18 months of falls. The plan has been launched in response to criticism that the energy giants were slow to pass on price falls. With standard plans, firms have complete discretion over when they pass on changes. But with the new tariff, British Gas will guarantee that they will be reflected in your quarterly bill. In the same way that tracker mortgages are linked to Bank of England rates, the British Gas Market Tracker will follow changes in the Heren index of wholesale gas and electricity prices. Critics have warned that the company could be launching the product at just the wrong time: experts said prices could jump 20% over the winter months. The Market Tracker, available from this weekend, is also more expensive than its cheapest online tariff. Customers will initially go on to the British Gas standard tari
British companies in Russia are on high alert as Anglo-Russian relations plunge to their lowest point since the end of the Cold War amid the fallout from the murder of Alexander Litvinenko in London last year.Analysts say high-profile newcomers to the Russian market, such as Kingfisher and MarksSpencer, which have both opened stores in Moscow, could find themselves targeted by far-right groups in Russia as sections of the country's media take an increasingly hostile attitude to the British. They point out that British diplomatic staff in Moscow have been harassed by the pro-Putin group Nashi for attending demonstrations against the president. The head of the Russian business lobby, Alexander Shokhin, warned that UK firms could expect more aggravation if the crisis in relations continued, and that the London Stock Exchange would 'start losing ground'.The current tension is just the latest of many problems British business has faced in Russia. Energy companies have been forced by Mosco
High oil prices have triggered a drilling boom off Britain but the big oil companies around which the North Sea energy industry was built are pulling investment out of this country and shifting their focus to what they see as more promising areas such as West Africa, the US Gulf and Russia. In the latest switch, Shell has put up for sale a swath of oil and gas producing assets including the Cormorant, Tern and Eider fields while scrapping proposals for a £25m new "centre of excellence" in the UK oil capital, Aberdeen. Most of the assets are jointly owned by Exxon which is also selling out. The move comes on top of BP's surprise announcement last month that it had dropped plans to develop a revolutionary new carbon sequestration plant at Peterhead in Scotland which would be attached to the Miller field in the North Sea. The same company has already sold off some of Britain's largest and most famous North Sea fields such as Forties.BP has also been disposing of chemic

Motorists in parts of Britain were being forced to fork out over £1 a litre yesterday but can be expected to pay more soon as crude prices soared again to nearly $77 a barrel.Turmoil in the international oil markets, due to strong demand, geopolitical instability and a shortage of refining capacity, will put further upward pressure on forecourt prices. Huge profits are expected for oil companies such as BP and Shell, which report their half-yearly financial results next week. ExxonMobil, which also reports next week, has just become the world's first company to be valued on a stock exchange at over half a trillion dollars (£250bn). The long-term outlook for the global economy seems bleak - without any concomitant relief for the environment. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said last week that it was raising its oil demand forecasts and warned there could be shortages in supply up until 2012.Petrol hits £1 a litre with no end in sight to turmoil in the world's oil marketThe av
