The Decision Process—Five Key Steps
Business decisions are difficult when they involve uncertainty, present many alternatives, are complex, and raise interpersonal issues.
Uncertainty makes us hesitate: “How can I decide when I don’t have all the facts, and when I cannot be certain about the outcome of my decision?” Some managers prefer doing nothing to taking what appears to be a leap in

The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) widely expected move to cut the Fed Funds rate by 25 basis points to 2% fails to instill confidence. Citing both the sagging economy and a highly uncertain inflation outlook the FOMC favored in an 8-2 split vote to try and stimulate the economy with cheaper credit. This will not go down well with consumers and businesses suffering from a parabolic development of their daily expenses. CNBC had an interview with the president of the American Retail Bakers, whose name I did not jot down. The lady was not too happy about the Fed's move. She would have preferred to see a sign that the Fed is truly concerned about inflation and will do something against it. Wall Street was disappointed too. In a classic "buy the rumour, sell the news" move it erased its

Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Far From Being Over, Further Economic Uncertainty?By: Mike WrightTo say that Wall Street has been paying close attention to the actions of the US Federal Reserve recently is an understatement to say the least. Last week was no different as the Dow Jones & Co reacted frantically to Fed attempts to stoke greater movement in moribund credit markets.Last week's mixed economic readings came in a week already made busy by the Fed's decision on Tuesday to lower interest rates for the third time this year, and its part a day later in the coordinated global liquidity 'rescue' plan. Investors have since been debating the effectiveness of such measures. In one unwelcome development, prices of gasoline at wholesale level jumped 3.2 percent in November, the biggest increase in 34 years. But the news

In quantum physics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is the statement that locating a particle in a small region makes the momentum of the particle uncertain, and conversely, measuring the momentum of a particle precisely makes the position uncertain. In quantum mechanics, the position and momentum do not have precise values, but have a probability distribution. There are no states in which a particle has both a definite position and momentum. The narrower the probability distribution is in position, the wider it is in momentum. Risk management is a relatively new and evolving field. Risk management usually refers to the process of identifying, measuring, controlling, and minimizing uncertainties which may directly or indirectly affect a desired outcome of a system. A great challenge indeed.Any process or procedure we can think of holds many uncertainties. Risk management tries to identify these uncertainties, assign probabilities and possible harm to each and every one and acts to minimize those risks. One of the most counter intuitive questions in risk management basics is: What is the difference between risk and uncertainty? There are actually many differences; some are of the utmost importance to every organization and every manager. When every possible option and outcome is known a decision is said to be taken under certainty. Many academic models assume certainty due to their basic function of explaining and prediction. These are also the standards most models are judged by. The recent retreat from certain

THOUGH corporate deal making is filled with uncertainty, one thing that you can generally count on is that the lawyers always get paid.
Investment banks have received a lot of attention for their big lump-sum fees and year-end bonuses, but the legal profession has also been cashing in on the frenzy of mergers and acquisitions, at rates traditionally set at hundreds of dollars an hour.
For some firms, billable hours are just the beginning. As the boom rolled on, law firms specializing in mergers and acquisitions increasingly engaged in premium billing, charging fees in excess of their total hourly billings. Think of it as a tip for good work. Whether a client pays a premium depends upon its satisfaction with the result, the size and complexity of the transaction, and the nature and length of the attorney-client relationship.
But since the credit market began to tighten this summer, an event that brought new deals to a crawl and has upset several old ones, many lawyers have been wonderin
Brett N. Steenbarger, Ph.D.How do you cope with the risk and uncertainty that are built into markets, and are you coping effectively? The topic of coping actually begins with the notion of stress. Stress is a characteristic set of physiological, cognitive, and emotional responses to threat. Generally, these responses speed up such bodily functions as heart rate, galvanic skin response, muscle tension, and rate of respiration. For this reason, the stress response has sometimes been called the "flight or fight" reaction. In the face of threat, our bodies prepare us for action: either to attack the source of danger or to run from it. What constitutes a source of stress is highly dependent upon our perception. If we define something as a threat, we will experience it as threatening, and that will trigger a stress response. For some people, public speaking is an everyday activity, not to be feared at all. It might even be something enjoyable. Others view public speaking as a poten
We open the week of November 18th, with what has become a familiar trend; the dollar continues to fall. The greenback finished off trading on Friday down against most major currencies as credit and housing worries continue to haunt the US economy. Figures from the Department of Treasury regarding International Capital, Balance of Payments, and Industrial numbers hindered any hopes of the greenback gaining on its progress from early last week. Instead, investors start the week offering the greenback in bulk. Another hit to the dollar came this weekend as the Gulf Cooperation Council, made up of the lion’s share of the Gulf States, discussed the possibility of revaluating their currencies away from the greenback. This has become a developing trend as China leaked several hints that they were doing the same, not too long ago.
The greenback this week will have to rely more heavily than usual on outside events, as the shortened Holiday week holds little relevant news in the US econom
November 16, 2007 By Michelle GraffNew York—The Diamond Trading Co. (DTC) acknowledged on Friday that it is an uncertain time for U.S. diamond dealers as they await the Dec. 12 release of the DTC's updated sightholder list.Earlier in the week, in response to this uncertainty, the Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association of America (DMIA) sent a letter addressed to DTC Managing Director Varda Shine underscoring the importance of retaining as many U.S. sightholders as possible. On Friday, in an e-mail to National Jeweler, the DTC stated that it "understands that this may be a time of uncertainty for some, but we would reassure people that the selection process...doesn't favor anybody."The DMIA's letter, copied to high-ranking government officials including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, included an attachment breaking down the amount of aid the United States supplies to African nations, many of which are the world's top diamond produc
Since the beginning of the week, the USD posted a modest rebound on expectations that this week’s U.S. economic data will help to determine the condition of the biggest economy.
Last week’s US calendar showed a poor picture for future growth and inflation prospects, with Import Price Index going sharply higher and Consumer Confidence is at its lowest in 2 years. Following the string of that disappointing data, Fed’s Chairman Ben Bernanke offered a relatively pessimistic outlook for domestic growth and inflation prospects last Thursday, stating that the U.S. GDP expansion would slow considerably in the final quarter of this year. Bernanke also forecasted that inflation will remain elevated through the same period.
These trends leave the traders with the difficult prospects of slowing economic activity. Moreover, investors worry that financial institutions have not yet revealed the full impact of the turmoil triggered by the subprime crisis, fearing that more U.S. fina

One of the hazards of modern day life is the continuously rising prices. Indeed a stage today has come when one cannot think of buying a product without carefully deliberating over it. In this scenario, when the price of the goods has spiralled well out of the reach of middle class households, it really is a matter of great concern when an expense suddenly raises its head. Needless to say that such an expense has all the capabilities of throwing the entire budget of any household out of gear. The situation becomes even more critical if the expense that has befallen has arisen out of damage done to some good. If the good concern is expensive then the situation becomes even more critical. Invariably such goods are purchased on loans and as such one has to take care of two expenses; one to repay the loan and the other to get the damage fixed. The burden on the individual concerned therefore can simply be understood. And if the good concerned happens to be a car then the plight of the ind
I continue to think about (and be plagued by) the whole issue of 'greatest hit images' versus images that serve as part of a 'self-contained' project. I have posted about this before and, almost assuredly, will do so again in the future, as it continues to be a source of confusion and uncertainty for me.The issue, in brief, concerns the use of images that are related as a project in some way, as compared to what one might consider a collection of their best images. The obvious example I have in mind is my Twin Jewels Project, which I have written about before. It is a project that seems to pull me in two directions since, on the one hand, I want very much to complete and 'market' it, in terms of having it shown but, on the other hand, the images simply aren't my 'best' work because the beauty of the locale is quite subtle. If one took ten of my best shots of this particular location and mixed them in with ten of what I consider to be my best landscape images (taken around
Monday’s releases from the US markets, which showed that US Existing Home Sales went down by 0.2% in July, caused the greenback to be traded at a mixed trend against most of the major currencies. The weak housing figures is raising many doubts and concerns about the health of the world’s largest economy, this lower home values left Americans feeling less wealthy. Investors are waiting for the speech on “Housing and Monetary Policy” by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke later this Friday, which will probably offer few hints about the future directions of the Fed’s monetary policy. As it seems at the moment, the housing market correction could take longer than expected and that could weigh on expenditure going forward.
It should be noted that the sub-prime market is just 4% of the overall real estate market, and its escalating effect is sometimes overwhelming. This ongoing housing problem makes it very difficult for Americans to tap home equity to finance the spending. A sl
Last week’s news releases were mixed with positive outcomes like the better than expected Core Retail Sales at 0.4%, a PPI which grew from 0.1% to 0.6%, a decrease in the Trade Balance (-58.1B), and an increase of TIC Net Long-Term Transactions (120.9B), and on the other hand negative results such as an unchanged Core CPI at 0.2% and a CPI which decreased to 0.1%, Housing Stats as well as building permits also decreased while unemployment claims rose. Then on Friday the news showed an erosion of consumer sentiment from the previous value of 88.5 to 83.3 and could therewith indicate a reduction of consumer spending that could potentially weaken the USD.
This week will be relatively on news releases with only the Unemployment Claims on Thursday and Durable Good Orders and New Home Sales on Friday. A release of Core Durable Goods has an expected value of 0.6%, and a positive surprise on the site of Home Sales Value (above 826K) could strengthen the dollar.

Thank the flying spaghetti monster, it's Friday's IT Blogwatch: in which we ponder the fate of the security industry. Not to mention deterministic programming gone mad...Bruce Schneier asks, "Do We Really Need a Security Industry?":What [does] it mean for the IT industry that there are thousands of dedicated security products on the market: some good, more lousy, many difficult even to describe. Why aren't IT products and services naturally secure, and what would it mean for the industry if they were?...The primary reason the IT security industry exists is because IT products and services aren't naturally secure ... Aftermarket security is actually a very inefficient way to spend our security dollars ... Fold security into the underlying products, and the companies marketing those products will have an incentive to invest in security upfront, to avoid having to spend more cash obviating the problems later.I know this is a utopian vision that I probably won't see in my lifetime, bu

A critical uncertainty that will determine India’s future in global ICT is the country’s infrastructure - roads, highways, bridges, seaports, subways, buses and trains, airports and airlines, electric power and water utilities, telecommunication systems, and so on.
Those within India’s fast-rising IT community sadly ponder what could have been - and what yet could be - if India’s infrastructure were the equal of any developed economy in the world. In its most recent report on global competitiveness, the World Economic Forum confirmed what millions of Indians and foreign business travellers to India know too well: “an inadequate supply of infrastructure” is by far the largest impediment to doing business in India. Indian executives themselves rank poor infras

What is doji? Doji is a candlestick where's the opening price is the same (or almost same as) of the closing price. Doji comes many forms: dragonfly, graveyard, etc. (i do not remember all). This doji is form on the candlestick pattern when market could not agree on the cited price. This cause the price bounced back to the original price when it is opened. This signals that the market is exhausted and the reversal is not far from now.Doji also means that bulls power = bears power. This equality also means that the price is at the brink of reversal.Although doji appearance during rally might signal an exhausted market, a doji appearance during decline may not portend a bottom. It might be a resting place before a downtrend resumes. However, there an exception for dragonfly doji in downtrend
