However, its reliance on add-on position sensors, which can be expensive, obtrusive and difficult to calibrate, is a major drawback. Alternatively, freehand 3D ultrasound can be acquired without a position sensor using image-based techniques. Sensorless reconstructions exhibit good fine scale detail but are prone to tracking drift, resulting in large scale geometrical distortions.MethodWe investigate an alternative position sensor, the Xsens MT9-B, which is relatively unobtrusive but measures orientation only. We describe a straightforward approach to calibrating the sensor, and we measure th

      What Is an Ultrasound Test?
There are all kind of tests out there that an expectant mother can have performed to gain information about the health of her growing fetus. Some, like amniocentesis, have been around for over 100 years. Ultrasound was introduced in the 1960s, though the early tests had limited value. Modern tests are much clearer, some even in 3D showing many kind of motions and how your baby really look like.Today, ultrasound is clear, simple, and inexpensive. Most are even covered by standard insurance plans that covers pregnancy. Also called sonography or just 'a scan', the woman's abdominal area is exposed to harmless ultra-high frequency sound waves. The echoes are then recorded and interpreted by a computer program which then projected onto a screen. The basic principle is similar to those that been used in fishing boats and submarines. Unlike X-rays ultrasound do not produces ionizing radiation, though the sound waves still carry energy. Nevertheless, the procedure is safe and painless. It al

Is Ultrasound A Viable Option For Prostate Cancer Therapy?
With localized prostate cancer the treatments of choice have generally been radioactive beam, radiactive seed or prostatectomy. All are very effective in stopping a low stage cancer. Effectiveness comes with side effects though. Incontinence and impotency are the most common side effects of all three treatments. There is a newer treatment called high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) that has been tested more extensively in the UK. While not yet fully accepted, the first 5 year survival studies are out and the rate is about 80%, with fewer side effects. These numbers put HIFU on the same plane as radiotherapy from a survival standpoint. HIFU treatment had been on the chopping block, doomed to be relegated to clinical trials only until this study. This will likely push it toward mainstream treatment. Bottom line. A low stage, low grade prostate cancer, successfully treated will generally lead to better than standard rates as long as the PSA reaches certain threshholds. With radiothera

Senator Sam Brownback Introduces a Bill That would Require an Ultrasound Before an Abortion
Senator and presidential hopeful Sam Brownback has introduced a bill that would require doctors to take an ultrasound and show it to the would be mother before she has an abortion. This is something that has been signed into law in Georgia earlier this year, and now Brownback is proposing it on a national level.   This was part of Senator Brownback’s statement: “We can reduce the number of abortions and help people reflect on the humanity of the unborn child by providing more information to women,”   Therein lies the problem, however, with this bill. The left wants to protect abortion at all costs, they are not interested with reducing the number of abortions. They see reducing the number of abortions as an attack on the woman’s right to choose. If there is a chance more woman will use the right to choose to choose life instead of death, and this reduces abortions, it will be considered an attack on abortions from within. Mayo Clinic Real-time 3-D Ultrasound Speeds Patient Recovery
Mayo Clinic physicians have adapted real-time 3-D ultrasound imaging devices — including one designed to look at an infant’s heart — so that they can watch as they use a needle filled with anesthetic to numb individual nerves located inches under the skin. In this way, they can quickly block nerve function in selected areas of the body prior to surgery, an advance that may spare patients from use of general anesthesia and sends them home faster and with less need for pain medication. Mayo anesthesiologists have demonstrated the benefits of real-time 3-D ultrasound in nerve blockade in more than 150 surgeries of varied types. Their presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals have informed other physicians worldwide into how this next-era ultrasound imaging technology may assist in peripheral nerve block placement — the technique of disabling targeted nerves so that a patient doesn’t feel pain from surgery. Georgia Encats law that Requires Mother to see Ultrasound Before an Abortion
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue Wednesday signed into law a bill mandating that women seeking abortion be given the opportunity to see an ultrasound of their unborn baby before having the abortion. The Full Disclosure Ultrasound Act goes into effect on July 1, 2007, making Georgia the 10th state to enact such a law. “This truly represents a trend among the states to provide a woman with all possible information before she makes a decision that will greatly affect her life and take the life of her unborn child,” said Mary Spaulding Balch, J.D., National Right to Life state legislative director. “Abortion is a decision that cannot be undone and women deserve all the fact,” she said in a press release. “Ultrasound is the window to the womb and allows women to see their unborn child,” Balch said. “We urge other states to join this trend and protect women and their unborn children.” What else can I  say, I think it’s a good idea. Abortion ultrasound-viewing advances in S.C.
Senate, governor expected to OK measure with rape, incest exemptions COLUMBIA, S.C. - With calls of emotional blackmail from opponents, a measure requiring women seeking abortions to first review ultrasound images of their fetuses advanced Wednesday in the South Carolina Legislature. The legislation, supported by Republican Gov. Mark Sanford, passed 91-23 after lawmakers defeated amendments exempting rape or incest. The House must approve the bill again in a routine vote before it goes to the Senate, where its sponsor expects it to pass with those exemptions. Some states make ultrasound images available to women before an abortion, but South Carolina would be alone in requiring women to view the pictures. Critics consider the proposal a tool to intimidate women who already have made an agonizing decision. “You love them in the womb but once they get here, it’s a different story,” said Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, a Democrat and a social worker. “You’re sitting

New Legislation: Women Must See Ultrasound Before Having an Abortion!
If this bill passes, women in South Carolina will have to look at an ultrasound image of their baby before they can proceed with having an abortion.  This bill is gaining a lot of support from lawmakers and if enacted would be the first law like this in the United States. They are saying that making the women look at an ultrasound before having an abortion could convince them to either keep the baby or offer it up for adoption.  Oran Smith, president for the Palmetto Family Council, said that women should have “as much background as possible when they’re making decisions.” However, some critics say that this bill would intimidate women who have already had to make the agonizing decision of having an abortion in the first place.  Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said, “The women of South Carolina would rather talk to their doctor about information they need to make private, personal medical decisions.  This is not a place for interference

      Ultrasound Subterfuge
Only two and a half months left to go and my husband still hasn't spilled the secret. As you may remember, Adam wanted to find out our baby's sex but I didn't so the technician wrote it in an envelope for his eyes alone. The card has been sitting propped on Adam's dresser for two months now.My refusal to look inside the card may seem to be yet another one of Sarah's random battles. After all, there really aren't any benefits to not knowing and a whole list of inconveniences it incurs. But there is a very important reason I can't look. It would mean he wins. When I went in for the ultrasound in November I made it clear to the technician that I did not want to know the sex. He gave me a surprised look and asked why. I didn't know how to reply to his curiosity. Sensing my weak position, the tech spent the rest of the examination trying to convince me to find out. Why did it matter to this stranger? Was this really such a rare request? Fueled by a growing dislike for the m
