Motorola sponsors charging kiosks in Uganda.
The Third World has had an explosive growth in mobile phones. The mobile phone technology has meant a leap in so far as the developing countries has not had to go via landline phones to create a telecommunications system. However, it is not without problems. The most difficult is probably access to electrical power to charge phones and to power base stations. In many places where there is no, and probably never will be, a power grid people are left with diesel generators, with all the problems they bring. A better solution would be to use solar power, a commodity that's abundant in most of the parts of the world that need it. Motorola has sensed this, and are now testing placement of charging kiosks where you can charge your cellphone for free. If there's only Motorola chargers availabl

      Our Valentine in Uganda
I've been a little slack on my blog reading lately, but this week I've been keeping up with Boomama in Uganda. She is on a trip with 14 other Christian Bloggers to Africa through Compassion. They arrived on February 10th and will return February 18th. I'm really enjoying reading about their journeys. They have inspired us to become a sponsor. I did a search and found a little boy in Uganda who was born on Austin's birthday. His name is Muwanguzi. This year he is our special Valentine. He doesn't know it yet, but I hope by next year we will have connected through letters and a real Valentine card. I typically post about our children on days like today. I love working on little collages of their latest adventures. Today, I hope this post will serve as a reminder to all of us to teach our chil

UGANDA: Energy for Rural Transformation Project
The Energy for Rural Transformation Project is in support of the First Phase of the Energy for Rural Transformation Program. The purpose of the long-term program is to develop Uganda's rural energy and information/communication technologies (ICT) sectors so as to bring about rural transformation. The central objective of the first phase is to put in place "on-the-ground" a functioning conducive environment and related capacity for commercially oriented, sustainable service delivery of rural/renewable energy and ICTs.The project consists of four components, of which three will be implemented by the private sector. The main grid related power distribution and generation component will finance investments in presently unserved rural areas that will be connected to the main grid. It will also provide Global Environment Facility (GEF) grants for qualifying renewable energy investments. The second component will support independent grid systems that may require some transmission as well as s

Uganda Safari Featuring highest Number of Primates in Africa
With a belief by some historians that human kind started and evolved in East Africa, it’s not surprising that Uganda, a destination in this region is prominent for being a habitat to the great primates.By description, Primates share with humans, flexible arms and legs, skilled fingers (and sometimes toes), and relatively big brains. The many species of apes, monkeys, and lemurs are among the primates. The chimpanzee for example is known for its being the closest living relative to humans. Half of the remaining Mountain gorillas in the world can only be seen in Uganda. Uganda, besides the other East African countries has grown into a well recognized safari destination for tourists because of its moist climate and the enormous amount of rich, dense forests, that have made it a home to these species. Over 300 mammals, 20 of which are primates, both diurnal and nocturnal have been recorded and can be traced on a tour to Uganda through the Uganda safari companies. Uganda’s primate inha

Helping the Homeless and Orphaned in Uganda- Show Mercy International
After reading Elizabeth Nieves blog entitled PLEASE look at this photograph before Thanksgiving Day... and Broker Bryant's blog entitled ActiveRain members CAN make a difference. Will you? I wanted to tell the folks at Active Rain about an organization that I belong to, that has taken on the task of feeding, clothing and giving shelter to the homeless and orphaned children of Uganda.  The founders, Mike and Lori Salley answered a call on their lives after a visit to Uganda opened their eyes to the extreme poverty and living conditions that the people of Uganda had to endure.  Mike especially took notice of the plight of the many orphaned and abandoned children that he came in contact with. His heart was broken for these children as he saw them all alone on the streets, scavenging for food like animals and even prostituting themselves just to stay alive. Thinking about his own children

Improving Soil, and Saving Money, in Eastern Uganda
DownloadThis is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report.Sorghum farmers in eastern Uganda, working with scientists, have tested some lower-cost ways to improve their soil. Little rain and poor soil fertility are problems in that area, as in other parts of southern Africa. Experts from the Kawanda Research Institute in Uganda and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States did the research. They say much of the soil lacks enough phosphorus and nitrogen. But for many small farmers, the cost of treating the soil is more than they earn from their crops.SorghumSo the researchers suggest five methods that could decrease costs and increase production of sorghum. Sorghum is an important food grain in southern Africa. The methods involve soil fertility management as well as reduced tillage. Tilling is breaking up and turning the soil to prepare the ground for planting. They say one way to renew the soil is to use a plant called mucuna. Mucuna is a herbaceous vegetable. Its seeds can

But they are fluent in rattling off the acronyms of war (RPG, LMG, SAM, SMG) and explaining just how these weapons work. Ranging in age from 7 to 18, they acquired their grim expertise as a result of being kidnapped and forced to serve as soldiers and sex slaves for the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda. Still, says a social worker who identifies himself only as Tom, these are the lucky ones. The children are among the few who have managed to escape captivity and seek a new start at rehabilitation clinics like this one, the Rachele Center, in the northern town of Lira. Crisis group set up to deal with Uganda-like situation
New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) The external affairs ministry has formed a crisis management group to prevent targeting of Indians in foreign countries as it recently happened in Uganda where an Indian was killed in racial violence. “The ministry has formed a crisis management group, which gets activated on the basis of inputs received from our missions abroad for providing assistance to Indians wherever they are targeted in large numbers,” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Rajya Sabha Thursday. Referring to the recent killing of an Indian in racial violence in Uganda last month, the minister said that the government took up the matter with the Ugandan authorities recently and also lodged an immediate request with the country’s government for providing protection to Indian nationals in Uganda. “President of Uganda met Asians in Uganda and assured them that the government of Uganda will ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” the minist

In order to curb the abuses by Ugandan soldiers, the government has successfully used paralegals to document and report human rights violations. Few government employees are available for this task, and the paralegal system established has helped register abuses.Full article: Analysis: Uganda, Uganda: Government must live up to protection responsibilities in the north

Insight from Uganda Via the Vogts
I think Via the Vogts will become a regular series here on the blog. The Vogts, Chris and Rebecca, are two dear friends of mine who are spending a large part of this year in Uganda learning, growing and preparing to serve in a land far different then the one they came from. They’ve already sent a number of very long email updates sharing some of what they have been learning. I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit and thought I’d just quote a tidbit from their latest email. They talked a lot about some of the superstitions of the Ugandan culture, and then they lent some insight into the USA world view: As Americans it’s pretty easy for us to see how silly it is to believe that excrement turns into children. We know that feverish chills and convulsions are symptoms of malaria and isn’t some evil spirit within a person. We know that giving money and food (essentially what a sacrifice is) to the “rain god” won’t really bring rain. It’s easy to
