If you want to remove viruses and spywares from your USB drive then first take a look how they affect your system. Most common viruses such as ’Ravmon’ , ‘New Folder.exe’, ‘Orkut is banned’ etc are spreading through USB drives. Most anti virus programs are unable to detect them and even if they do, in most cases they are unable to delete the file, only quarantine it. Here are the things

Do you have a USB flash drive laying around? Speed up your Windows Vista with the ReadyBoost feature. It allows you to use that spare space on a USB stick reduce wait time when using Vista.Basically Windows ReadyBoost allows Vista to use a compatible USB flash drive as cache instead of the hard drive. Microsoft suggests that you provide enough space on a flash drive for ReadyBoost so that you are in at least a 1:1 ratio with your installed physical RAM. So if you have 1Gig of Ram installed, would be best ot have a 1Gig USB drive, or at minimum 512Meg free of space on it.Without getting too picky if you have a really old USB drive, see if you can find out the specs for it, it is recommended that the USB drive you have be at least: 5 MB/sec throughput for random 4k reads across th

The San Quentin State Prison has announced that it has lost a flash memory drive with information on more than 3500 people. The information included driver’s license numbers, names, and dates of birth. The 3500 people were volunteers or groups who toured the facility.
Toured the facility. Considering that San Quentin is still an active prison—in other words, more like Sing Sing than Alcatraz—it’s kind of hard to understand how (or why) groups tour the facility. However, it is true that Johnny Cash performed a live concert there, and in 2003 Metallica filmed their entire music video for St. Anger from that location as well. Which, actually, is testament to why you wouldn’t want to tour that place: not only because of the charming guys in orange

Here’s another interesting concept designed by Sang-Hoon Lee, but this time it’s a USB Drive. Weird, or maybe not, this one looks like a chocolate bar and each piece is made of a modular flash drive. It the middle of this chocolate we find a touchscreen which is used to organize collective files. Even if the design of this concept is very interesting and quite tasty, we wonder if this would work in the real world.

If you are working across multiple computers that are not connected to each other, you probably use the good old USB drive (or external hard drive) to store and carry your Office documents, Photoshop drawings, personal pictures and other multimedia files. Perfect. Now imagine a situation where you have all required data on the USB drive but the computer you are currently working on (say in the cyber café or a friend’s place) doesn’t have the necessary software programs that are required to view or edit those files. That computer neither has Microsoft Office for creating PowerPoint presentations or Excel sheets, nor Photoshop and AutoCAD for you to edit those important CAD drawings. Even the media player is missing so you cannot watch your personal video and music collection that you have been carrying in the pocket. What if you could carry all your favorite software applications (and their settings), Office files, emails and everything else with you on a portable drive? You just p
By default, Windows XP will not allow you to use anything but the FAT and FAT32 file systems to format your USB drives. With a little fiddling you can also enable the NTFS file system on your removable devices though. As for whether you would want to, there are pros and cons.
On the positive side, enabling NTFS allows you to encrypt your documents with Windows XP’s built in file encryption (though you should only do this in a Windows 2000 or 2003 domain network). It also allows the use of file compression to stretch the capacity of your disk. You can also use NTFS to allow and deny permissions for individual files and folders within XP, something you can’t do with FAT file systems. You can also set disk quotas. In short, enabling NTFS on flash drives might have several benefits for IT departments that use or issue these devices as standard. (more…)

Corsair launched their newest flash drive this week called the Flash Padlock. The drive is available in a 1GB capacity for $29.99 and a 2GB capacity for $39.99. Those are both pretty mundane amounts of storage these days, but the Flash Padlock offers a feature you won’t see elsewhere. The front of the drive has a five button keypad that allows you to set your own, custom pin number of up to ten digits long. A hardware-enabled auto-lock function secures the drive each time you unplug it from your PC once you choose a pin number. Once the drive is secure the data on the drive can’t be accessed unless you know the pin number. The drive won’t even be recognized by Windows when plugged into a computer without entering the pin number. No software is required on the attached computer for the Flash Padlock to work and it is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
As a follow up to a previous article about Portable Web Development on a USB Drive, here are a couple programs you can include to make it Ruby on Rails compatible.
InstantRails
In the original article, I recommended XAMPP Lite as a portable Apache, PHP, MySQL server that doesn’t require installation. You can add a Rails installation to XAMPP but an easier way is to get InstantRails.
InstantRails includes an Apache, PHP/MySQL and Rails preinstalled and preconfigured, all you need to do is to unzip it to your USB drive. InstantRails is based off EasyPHP (similar to XAMPP) so it is also extensible if you wish to install other software onto it as well.
RadRails
RadRails is a plug-in for the Eclipse IDE. It streamlines many of Rail’s features so you don’t even have to touch the command line to create or migrate your rail files. RadRails is currently supported by the Aptana team so you can get it from the Aptana site as either a plug-in for Aptana/Eclipse.

I know this looks like it’s for “businesses” only, but a free 1 gig usb drive is too good to pass up. Plus, I already get credit card offers in the mail addressed to “Ryan Hey It’s Free” asking if I want a platinum business account, so why shouldn’t I be able to say HIF is a business and get a few perks? And yes, I actually get mail addressed to me with my first name and then my last name as “Hey It’s Free.” I really would like to meet the person who saw that name floating around out there and thought it looked legit enough to send a credit card offer to. He needs to be reassigned to the Moron Department, where employees are kept in a padded room and only allowed paper with round edges and dull pencils.

I've been looking out for a tool that will let me easily backup and restore my USB drives as I've been using NT Backup for sometime. The ideal thing would be when I insert a USB drive one of the options in the list to be'Backup Drive' - but until this happens a utility is needed.I happened upon a Microsoft tool earlier and I'm testing it now. It is called Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager (Standard) and is available here. It's an old program by the look of it and has a work-in-progress feel about it - for instance it detects my usb drive as a 2gb/4gb drive. At the moment it's backing up my 8Gb drive and its taken around half and hour so far which seems a little slow to me but I will persevere in the short term as it seems like an interesting utility. It does need the .NET framework only and will only run on XP. For another useful utility try this link for KeePass.
One more USB flash drive! Although it’s still in conceptual stage, Art Lebedev Studios has unveiled this newest drive that that makes a literal representation of the device's purpose as a file holder. It includes an exposed, direct USB connection and leaves a large flat surface on either side that can be labeled much as with actual folders. It’s still just the designer’s blueprint…..and will take its time to hit the production level. No news on the storage space nor availability and pricing.via luxurylaunches

Last week I mentioned that Eclipse is now my favorite IDE for web development in PHP, HTML, Ruby on Rails and Java. I also mentioned that you can run Eclipse off an USB drive and said I’d write a how-to… well as promised, here it is!
Running Eclipse or Aptana from your USB drive is fairly straight forward. Both programs are available in a standalone zip file that does not require any installation. So to install to USB, simply extract the downloaded zip file anywhere on your USB drive.
However, since both are Java applications, this requires that the host computer you are running on to have the required Java run time files installed. Luckily, there is a way of including these Java runtime files on your USB drive as well. These instructions are for Eclipse but should work with Aptana as well.
Download and unzip Eclipse SDK to your USB drive (version 3.2.2 at the time of writing).
In the folder where you installed Eclipse, create a folder called “JavaFiles”

Engadget today is reporting on a plan by French authorities to issue USB drives stocked with Open Source software to 175,000 Parisian high school students. For now the list of OS programs is up in the air. The Greater Paris Regional Council, which appears to be in charge of the initiative, will be taking bids from firms interested in providing the drives. Apparently the wining bidder will be choosing which Open Source apps make the cut.
Just about everyone is expecting Firefox and Thunderbird to end up on the drives but I thought I’d include a few other “must have” open source apps that would be great for students.
