Anche se lo sappiamo già, questa è l’ennesima conferma dell’importanza del patrimonio artistico e paesaggistico dell’Italia e della stretta connessione tra turismo, arte e territorio. News from UNESCO re Cesky Krumlov
There has been some good news on the UNESCO front. In my post a couple of months ago about the Alchemist's House I told you about the fears some of us have for Cesky Krumlov and the fate of its historic buildings in the face of high levels of unsustainable tourism and inappropriate developments which are killing the heritage goose that lays the golden eggs. I was involved in helping a group of concerned local residents write to UNESCO asking for action to be taken. And I am glad to report that UNESCO appears to have heeded their appeals. In the report that went to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in July it was reported that: “In February 2007, the World Heritage Centre received information concerning the inappropriate use of certain buildings of the Historic Centre of Cesky Krumlov from representatives of the local community (non-governmental organizations based in the Historic Centre of Cesky Krumlov)”. And it was agreed that the World Heritage Committee “requests

Banaue Rice Terraces may get scratched off the UNESCO Heritage list
This is really sad. Due to the continuous deterioration of the rice terraces, not to mention the shanties that has sprung up on the terraces itself, the Ifugao Terraces (Banaue, Batad, etc.) just might be taken off the list. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on Thursday said the scenic Ifugao Rice Terraces in the Cordilleras was at risk of being stricken off the World’s Heritage List should the Philippines fail to restore it in two years. The World Heritage Committee in 2001 inscribed the Rice Terraces in the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger, joining 32 other endangered World Heritage Sites. “The Rice Terraces is a delicate, evolving cultural landscape. In the absence of a systematic monitoring program or a comprehensive management plan, it is impossible to guarantee [its] preservation and sustainable development,” a statement from the Foreign Affairs department quoted the panel as saying last June. UNESCO slams new seven wonders list
THE UN body for culture overnight blasted a private initiative that drew nearly 100 million Internet and telephone voters to choose seven "new" wonders of the world. "This campaign responds to other criteria and objectives than that of UNESCO in the field of heritage," said Sue Williams, the spokeswoman for the UN cultural body that designates world heritage sites. "We have a much broader vision," she said. Voters chose the Great Wall of China; India's Taj Mahal; the centuries-old pink ruins of Petra in Jordan; the Colosseum in Rome; the statue of Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro; the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru; and the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico. British actor Ben Kingsley and US actress Hillary Swank hosted a ceremony at Lisbon's Stadium of Light, broadcast in more than 170 countries to an estimated 1.6 billion viewers. A private Swiss foundation launched the contest in January, allowing voters to choose from 21 sites shortlisted out of 77. It said

UNESCO and the new wonders of the world
I visited this week UNESCO’s website to do some research on a future entry for this blog, and found a press release from the institution titled UNESCO confirms that it is not involved in the “New 7 wonders of the world” campaign. The note denies any relationship between UNESCO and the initiative of entrepeneur Bernard Weber. Jorge Gobbi had already alerted about the use of the name of the UNESCO in an article in Spanish. The complete text of the note can be found at the UNESCO’s website. I wanted to highlight here two paragraphs: “UNESCO’s objective and mandate is to assist countries in identifying, protecting and preserving World Heritage. Acknowledging the sentimental or emblematic value of sites and inscribing them on a new list is not enough. Scientific criteria must be defined, the quality of candidates evaluated, and legislative and management frameworks set up. UNESCO or not
Those of you who have read my other posts will know my love of Cesky Krumlov. It is a wonderful Czech town in South Bohemia. As you arrive from Prague you come down the hill and in front of you you see a Renaissance castle, set on cliffs, almost Gormenghast-like in its proportions and aspect. It takes your breath away and you realise you are arriving somewhere very special. And you are - the heart of the Cesky Krumlov is a perfectly preserved medieval/renaissance town. In recognition of this the town was made a UNESCO world heritage site. The UNESCO status is meant to help protect its wonderful and unique collection of buildings and in some ways it does. But UNESCO status is a double-edged sword, it brings with it other dangers.Being a UNESCO World Heritage site means that inevitably the town gets on to the tourism map. There is nothing wrong with that if the tourism is managed in an appropriate sustainable way, but it isn't. It would appear that those who "manage" tourism in Cesky K

In a statement on the eve of World Press Freedom Day Thursday, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura urged the world to “commemorate media professionals who have lost their lives and honour those who bring us information despite danger and risk”. This year’s celebration will be held in Medellin, Colombia, and will consist of a two-day seminar and the posthumous awarding of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize to murdered Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was gunned down on a Moscow street in October 2006. UNESCO supported "Community Multimedia Centers"
The UNESCO supported "Community Multimedia Centers" are community-based facilities offering both community radio broadcasting and telecenter services. Radio broadcasts by local people in local languages are now possible at low cost due to the development of small, inexpensive, easy-to-operate broadcast facilities. In Africa and other regions, where languages are spoken and national broadcast networks are weak, community radio provides a new and important medium for communication of news, information, and entertainment. The radio not only informs, educates and entertains, but it also empowers the community by giving a strong public voice to the voiceless, and thus encouraging greater accountability in public affairs. This UNESCO initiative showing the world the power of CMCs is in its fifth year of operation, with 39 pilot CMCs established in communities across Latin America/Caribbean, Africa and South Asia.Read the recent evaluation of the UNESCO program. http://portal.unesco.org/ci/e
