Happy Birthday to Temple's favorite Yankee Doddle Dandy, Al Golden, July 4, 1969By Mike GibsonOne of the surprising things about my cabin near the lake in the Poconos is the people I meet. One of my good friends over the years, who shall remain nameless, was the supervisor of officials for what used to be known as Division IAA.That's the division that includes Delaware and Villanova and the like.Ev
State legislators announced a compromise Wednesday that will allow the University of Connecticut to play a six-game football series with Notre Dame, even though none of those games will be played in Connecticut.
UConn and Notre Dame had been negotiating a 10-game series. The Fighting Irish wanted five of those games played in South Bend Ind., and the five UConn "home" games played at large
Well, the Rutgers women's basketball team lost to UConn in the NCAA Women's Tournament last night, 66-56. I can't say I am not pleased with this outcome, especially since I am hardly a fan of C. Vivian Stringer, the coach of Rutgers. What I do hope is that unlike last year, that Don Imus forgot to watch last night's game ... because we all know what happened last year when he watched ...

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Elena Delle Donne, considered the top women’s basketball prospect in the 2008 recruiting class, has committed to Connecticut, her father told the Journal Inquirer of Manchester. Delle Donne, a 6-foot-5 guard from Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Del., also was considering Villanova and defending NCAA champion Tennessee. She would be the second major recruit Tennessee lost to UConn recently. The Huskies’ recruitment of incoming freshman Maya Moore, the 2006 national high more…

Coach Randy Edsall installed Lorenzen as the starter on Tuesday. The 6-foot-5, 226-pound left-hander threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns last season at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, California. Lorenzen, a junior, enrolled at UConn in January and had been competing with more…
Notre Dame QB Zach Frazer Transfers to UConnSophomore Zach Frazer, who found himself the odd man out in Notre Dame's race for a starting QB this season, announced he would transfer to Connecticut. This isn't very big news from the Irish's perspective, but it could be huge news for the Huskies. UConn's starting quarterback for 2007 is still unknown, never mind 2008 when Frazer becomes eligible. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut and Tennessee, the top two programs in women’s college basketball, are ending their annual series, the schools announced Friday.
Connecticut had signed a contract to extend the annual game through the 2008-09 season, but Tennessee declined to extend the series.

(CSTV U-WIRE) STORRS, Conn. — When the buzzer rang on March 16, the 2006-2007 season of UConn hockey came to a heartbreaking end as the Huskies lost, 3-1, to Army in the Atlantic Hockey tournament semifinals.
For senior captain Matt Scherer, it was the heartbreaking end to a four-year chapter of his life — one that, when it finished, left even the strongest of leaders emotional.
"Even after a little over a month from when we last played [in the semifinals] it still

The backcourt duo of Renee Montgomery and Mel Thomas scored over half of UCONN’s points in a 70-49 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the RAC on Monday night. Montgomery had a game-high 21 points while Thomas scored 16 points. Charde Houston rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 11 points. Essence Carson led Rutgers with 17 points while Matee Avajon added 9 points.
The two teams traded baskets in the first half as Rutgers got out to a 21-16 lead with 6:40 left to go in the half. A 15-0 run by UCONN to end the half from the point basically put the game out of reach as they went into the locker room with a 10 point lead.
It took Rutgers 2 and half minutes to score in the second half and at that point the lead was 12 for the Huskies. An 11-1 run by the Huskies got the lead to 20 points and it was smooth sailing from there as UCONN went on to the 21 point victory.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.

Tina Charles led 5 Huskies in double figures as UCONN finished up it’s home schedule with a convincing 92-49 victory over the Villanova Wildcats. Charles had her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Mel Thomas added 16 points, Renee Montgomery had 13 points, Charde Houston had 12 points and Brittany Hunter scored 10 for the Huskies. Lisa Karcic and Stacie Witman led Villanova with 17 points each.
The game was never in doubt for the Huskies as they scored early and often. UCONN finished up the first half on a 14-3 run to lead by 28 at the half, 45-17. The second half was much of the same as UCONN just totally dominated.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
Houston was honored before the game for scoring 1,000 points in her UCONN career. She is the 28th player to achieve this feat.
Thomas moved into 6th place all time on the career 3 pointers made in UCONN history passing Maria Conlon at 170. She now
Well UCONN fans, if you are accustomed to going to the Big East Tournament in NYC and used to seeing your Huskies play on Thursday, well make arrangements to be there. Just make them for a day earlier than normal. Jerome Dyson led the Huskies in scoring again as they defeated the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers to clinch a berth in the Big East Tournament. Dyson had 17 points and Jeff Adrien chipped in 14 points. AJ Price also hit double figures with 10 points. For Rutgers, they were led by Adrian Hill and JR Inman who both scored 15 points. Inman had missed the previous game against UCONN with an injury.
The first was rather ugly as both teams had trouble scoring and Rutgers got out to the early lead. Rutgers got the lead up to 8 at 22-14 before a 14-1 run in the last 5 minutes by the Huskies gave them the halftime lead at 28-23.
UCONN built the lead up to 12 in the second half but an 11-0 run by Rutgers got them within 1 point. UCONN’s last basket came at the 4:20 mark but they mad
Tina Charles 9th double-double of the season led the UCONN Huskies past a pesky University of South Florida Bulls basketball team in Tampa on Tuesday night. Charles had a career high 34 points and 17 rebounds while Charde Houston chipped in with her own double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kalana Greene rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points. Nalini Miller had 18 points for the Bulls while Shantia Grace has 17 points. UCONN’s tough defense held USF star, Jessica Dixon, to 11 points on 5 of 16 shooting.
UCONN fell behind in the first half but a quick run got them back in front. They went into the break up 6 at 38-32. UCONN was never really threatened the rest of the way. South Florida couldn’t get closer than 9 the rest of the way.
Notes and observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
The win clinched their first Big East title in 3 years. It was their 14th overall and 11th outright.
The win also gives the Huskies
Demetris Nichols, 20 points, led 4 Syracuse players in double figures as they defeated the UCONN Huskies 73-63 on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The win avenges a 7 point loss to UCONN 12 days ago. Paul Harris had 16 points, Eric Devendorf 15 points and Andy Routins had 13 points to round out the Orangemen in double figures. UCONN was led by Jerome Dyson, who scored a career high 27 points. Hasheem Thabeet added 11 points for the Huskies.
The first half was not very pretty as both teams had trouble scoring. Dyson got hot early for the Huskies with a couple of 3 point baskets before a Devendorf jumper tied the game at 18 with 8 minutes to go in the half. The game stayed close thru the rest of the half with Syracuse pulling out to a 6 point lead before a Stanley Robinson 3 pointer at the buzzer got UCONN within 3 points, 35-32, going into the locker room at the half.
Starting out the 2nd half, a Nichols jumper and a dunk to go along with 3 missed shots by UCONN, led Coach Jim Calhoun t
Behind the strength of a 29-2 run after falling behind 4-0, the UCONN Huskies defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers by a final score of 82-68. Leading 4 Huskies in double figures was Charde Houston, who had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Renee Montgomery chipped in 17 points, Tina Charles 16 points and Mel Thomas had 10 points. Pittsburgh was led by Marcedes Walker’s double-double, 22 points and 16 rebounds. Selena Nwude added 14 points, Xenia Stewart 12 points, and Shavonte Zellous 11 points for the Panthers.
As I stated above, UCONN used a 29-2 run to get out to a 29-6 lead with about 10 minutes to go in the first half. Pittsburgh then went on a 8-0 run to get back within 15 points. Houston was pivotal to the Huskies in the first half as she had 14 of her 23 points in the first half. UCONN made a small run at the end of the half and went into the locker room leading by 20 (45-25) at the break.
Throughout the 2nd half, Pittsburgh kept chipping away at the UCONN lead

Jerome Dyson scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead UCONN past the Pirates of Seton Hall 67-55 on a cold icy night at Storrs. Three other Huskies scored in double figures tonight. Jeff Adrien has 12 points, Craig Austrie had 11 and Doug Wiggins had 10. Seton Hall was led by Brian Laing with 17 points. Eugene Harvey added 10 for the Pirates.
The first half was very not a pretty sight as both teams struggled to make baskets. The teams combined to make 19 of 67 shots. As I said not very pretty at all. UCONN led by 2 at the half.
Seton Hall got out to a 5 point lead in the second half but a 15-2 run by the Huskies put UCONN up for good. Dyson scored 8 straight points to put UCONN up by 6 and they never looked back from there.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Austrie, Dyson, Johnson, Thabeet and Adrien.
Besides having 12 points, Adrien was a monster on the boards pulling down 15 rebounds, 7 of them on the offensive end. The double-double was Adrien’s Big East
Renee Montgomery, one of four Huskies in double figures, led UCONN past the Louisville Cardinals 84-56 at Gampel Pavilion. Montgomery had 20 points while Mel Thomas and Charde Houston each had 19 points. Ketia Swainer came off the bench to score 12 points to round out the Huskies in double figures. Angel McCoughtry of Louisville led all scorers with 28 points. She also added 6 steals.
UCONN started the half out on a 19-2 run including 16-0 to start the game. Thomas had 2 three pointers during the run while Montgomery had 6 points. UCONN had 14 assists on 17 first half baskets. The second half was much of the same as UCONN used many small runs to provide the final margin of victory.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
Tina Charles was named the Big East freshman of the week for the fourth time in five weeks on Monday. She didn’t really have that great of a game tonight but it wasn’t really needed. She finished with 3 p
In a fantastic finish, Renee Montgomery’s 3 point shot with 6.7 seconds left was the difference as UCONN held onto win at LSU, 72-71. LSU’s Porsha Phillips hit a two pointer with no time left that was thought to be a 3 pointer. But the referees went to the replay monitor and it showed that Phillips foot was on the line giving UCONN the one point victory. UCONN ended LSU’s NCAA best 43 game home winning streak.
UCONN was led by Montgomery’s 20 points and 7 assists. She was 5 of 7 from 3 point land, including the game winner. Tina Charles added 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Kalana Greene added 15 points and Charde Houston, 12 points. LSU was led by Slyvia Fowles had 22 points and 17 rebounds while Quianna Cherry had 16 points. Phillips added 12 points and Allison Hightower had 11.
UCONN got out to an early lead in the first half but a mini 5-0 run by LSU put them ahead in the first half. LSU got the lead to 12 at the 4 minute mark but only scored 1 point the r
Led by the double-doubles of three players, UCONN was able to withstand a late run by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to win by the final score of 60-50. Charde Houston, Tina Charles and Kalana Greene’s double doubles were the first by 3 UCONN players since January 9th, 1994, when Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters and Jamelle Elliot accomplished the same feat. Houston had 16 points and 11 rebounds while both Charles and Greene each had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Renee Montgomery rounded the Huskies in double figures with 10 points. Rutgers was led by former UCONN recruit Kia Vaughn, who had 16 points and 8 rebounds while Tina Charles best friend, Epiphanny Prince, had 11 points.
Rutgers got out to an early 3-0 lead on an Essence Carson 3 point shot but that was their only lead of the game. A Charles lay up put the Huskies up for good at the 16 minute mark. UCONN got their lead up to 7 early on behind the strength of 5 offensive rebounds and Charles’ 4 blocked shots in the first 10 m
In front of a very loud crowd on Monday night at a sold out Gampel Pavilion, the sophomore trio of Craig Austrie, Marcus Johnson and Jeff Adrien led the UCONN Huskies to a 67-60 victory over the Syracuse Orangemen. Austrie led the way for the Huskies with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Adrien chipped in with 12 points, 12 rebounds and added 3 blocks on the defensive end. Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points. AJ Price and Jerome Dyson rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Syracuse was led by Demetris Nichols, who had 2o points and Paul Harris and Eric Devondorf, who both added 13 points for the Orange.
Syracuse got out to a 16-9 lead early in the first half as the Huskies struggled from the field. UCONN held the Orange scoreless for the next 5 minutes to take the lead at 17-16 until a Paul Harris jump shot got Syracuse back in front. UCONN scored the last 3 points of the first half to close it out with a 1 point lead at 28-27
In the UCONN Women’s closest win of the season, Tina Charles led the Huskies past the Golden Eagles of Marquette by the final score of 52-48. Charles had her 7th double-double of the season with a career high 20 points and 14 rebounds. Renee Montgomery was the only other Husky in double figures with 12 points. Marquette was led by Christina Quaye’s 20 points and Krystal Ellis’ 10 points.
UCONN got down early but a Mel Thomas 3 pointer tied the game at 11 all. A 20-9 UCONN run ended the half and provided the 31-20 halftime score.
UCONN weathered some runs by Marquette in the second half as they got the lead down to 3 points towards the end of the game but two Montgomery free throws sealed the deal for the Huskies.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and McLaren.
Charde Houston didn’t start for the first time all year as she was in Coach Geno Auriemma’s doghouse. However, in her 15 minutes of play, even though she o
University of Connecticut officials have announced that the ‘Huskies of Honor” ceremony on Monday night, February 5th, will be webcast over at uconnhuskies.com. The ceremony will take place at halftime of the game between UCONN and Syracuse.
This is good news for the legions of UCONN fans as the game is being broadcast nationally on ESPN and the ceremony won’t be seen there. Kudos to UCONN for making this available to the fans.

In a very ugly game on Saturday, it took overtime but the UCONN Men halted their 5 game losing skid behind the play of Jeff Adrien and Jerome Dyson. Those two players led UCONN to a 61-50 overtime win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Adrien led the way with 19 points and 7 rebounds while Jerome Dyson chipped in 13 points. Craig Austrie added 13 points to the cause as well. For Rutgers, they were led by Jaron Griffin, who scored 18 points. Anthony Farmer added 13 points.
The first half was ugly as both teams struggled to make baskets. Between the two teams, they scored 39 points and had 14 baskets between them. UCONN led 23-16 at the half.
The second half really wasn’t played that much better other than the fact that UCONN took good control of the ball. Rutgers got it down to 2 points at 28-26 before UCONN went on a 10-3 run which you would have thought that the game was out of reach. Unfortunately for UCONN, they weren’t able to make their free throws down the stretch and

Draelon Burns, who scored 26 points, helped the DePaul Blue Demons survive a late UCONN run and defeat the Huskies by the final score of 66-58. Wilson Chandler added 14 points to go along with 9 rebounds while Sammy Mejia added 10 points. UCONN was led by Jerome Dyson, who scored 16 points. Jeff Adrien added yet another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The first half was rather ugly as both teams really couldn’t get much done offensively and had trouble keeping control the ball. UCONN led for most of the first half until DePaul went on a 9-0 run to go up by 5 points with a minute to go in the first half. Craig Austrie added a layup to cut the lead to 3 points but Burns hit a 3 point shot at the buzzer that seem to set the tone for the second half.
DePaul came out in the second half with the momentum from Burns shot to end the first half and got out to a 20 point lead. With about 11 minutes to go in the game, UCONN started to chip away at the lead and got it down to 3

In Mel Thomas’ homecoming, UCONN held on in the end to win against the Cincinnati Bearcats 70-60. The Huskies were led by reigning Big East Player of the Week, Kalana Greene, who had 20 points and 7 rebounds. Thomas didn’t disappoint her friends and family by adding 14 points, including a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line. The Bearcats were led by Emy Ogide and Carla Jacobs, who both scored 12 points. Michelle Jones,a teammate of Thomas in high school, added 11 points for the Bearcats.
UCONN fell behind 6-0 but then they went on a 19-0 run to take the lead in the first half. Thomas had 2 three pointers to lead the Huskies with 9 points at the half as they led by 12 at the break. Both teams took care of the ball well in the first half with UCONN committing only 5 turnovers and the Bearcats committed 7.
The second half was a different story as Cincinnati fought and clawed to stay close to the Huskies. UCONN went cold and couldn’t make any shots and Cincinnati was

Freshman Tina Charles near triple-double led the UCONN women past Notre Dame by the score of 64-47. Charles had 12 pts, 10 rebounds, and 9 blocked shots. Kalana Greene chipped in with 10 pts and 7 rebounds for the Huskies. The Fighting Irish were led by Erica Williamson with 12 pts and Crystal Erwin’s 11 points.
Neither team really came out to play in the first half as both teams were sluggish offensively. UCONN was 9 of 24 (37.5%) and Notre Dame was 7 for 31 (22.6%) from the floor. UCONN went into the break leading by 8, 24-16.
UCONN came out a as totally different team in the second half and for the most part they were clicking on all cylinders. Shots were falling, playing good defense and shutting down the Irish.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
Tina Charles 9 blocked shots is good for a tie for 1st all time in UCONN history. It is also the Big East Freshman record for blocks in a game.
Besides Charles 9 blocks, three
Kalana Greene’s career high 25 points along with her 12 rebounds led UCONN past the DePaul Blue Demons by a score of 88-76 in a Big East match-up at Gampel Pavilion. Charde Houston rebounded from her past few low scoring games chipping in 19 points. Brittany Hunter and Tina Charles rounded out the Huskies in double figures each adding 11 points. For DePaul, they were led by Caprice Smith’s 19 points and Allie Quigley’s 16 points.
Other than UCONN’s two losses and the game vs Purdue this season, the game tonight was the closest that a team had been to UCONN towards the end of the game. DePaul, a team which shoots a lot of three pointers, was only 3 of 13 from the behind the line as they stayed close during the 1st half. UCONN only led by 8 at the break. The second half was a different story as UCONN got their lead up to 17 points but DePaul got the lead back down to 5 behind their three point shooting abilities. UCONN hit their free throws down the stretch an
Behind 19 points from Mel Thomas, the UCONN Women defeated the St. John’s Red Storm 84-63 in their first ever meeting at the “Mecca” of college basketball, Madison Square Garden. Tina Charles added 15 points and 6 rebounds in her homecoming and Renee Montgomery added 15 points as well. Kalana Greene rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 14 points. St. John’s was led by former UCONN recruit, Kia Wright, who scored 19 points.
UCONN got out to a big lead early behind the strength of five 3 pointers by Mel Thomas and never looked back from there. Although UCONN was only up 13 at the break, they did hold St John’s to 27% shooting in the first half and 32% for the game.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
Mel Thomas’ five 3 pointers tied her career high. She had those 5 in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the first half. She didn’t make any more the rest of the way. She finished 5 of 14 from
Roderick Wilmont came up big when he was needed as his 23 points led the Indiana Hoosiers past the UCONN Huskies 77-73 on Saturday afternoon in Hartford. D.J. White added 21 points and Arman Bassett had 13 points. For the Huskies, they were led by freshman Stanley Robinson’s career high 21 points. Jeff Adrien added yet another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. No other Husky was in double figures.
UCONN got down by 14 points early in this one but used a 24-5 run to pull ahead by 1 with less than 3 minutes to go in the first half. UCONN was down three points before Doug Wiggins hit a 3 pointer to tie the game at 39 at the half.
UCONN once again was down in the second half but showed heart in taking the lead back. The problem this time is UCONN lacked the killer instinct to put away the Hoosiers. UCONN was abysmal again from the free throw line only making 17 of 28 from the charity stripe. This hurt UCONN severely. Rodrick Wilmont, who fouled out for a moment, had the
Tina Charles, one of six Huskies in double figures, led UCONN to 96-53 thrashing of the Providence Friars at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence. Charles had 18 points and Mel Thomas had 17 points, rebounding from a poor shooting performance against the Lady Tarheels on Monday night. Ketia Swanier scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half while Renee Montgomery and Kalana Greene had 12 points each. Kaili McLaren rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points.
Given the fact that Providence had defeated then #12 Louisville, I had thought this game would be closer than it was. Providence did get out to an early lead at 7-6 but Mel Thomas hit two 3 point shots and the Huskies never looked back again. UCONN led 57-30 at the break. UCONN actually could have been shut out in the 2nd half and still won this game. Tina Charles was amazing in the paint during the game scoring 15 of her team high 18 points in the first half. She had 3 points in limited minutes in the second half
Aaron Gray’s double-double, 22 points and 19 rebounds, led Pittsburgh to a 63-54 victory over the UCONN Huskies in a nationally televised game on espn2. Ronald Ramon had 17 points, 4 for 4 from 3 point land, to help the Panthers. No other Panther was in double figures. For the Huskies, they were once again led by Jeff Adrien, who had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Jerome Dyson chipped in with 11 points.
This game was a typical Big East battle. Low scoring, very aggressive play. To give you an idea of how low scoring the game was, at the first media timeout, the score was Pittsburgh 2 UCONN 0. UCONN couldn’t buy a bucket in the first half as they were 4 for 17 before going on a 5-0 run to get within 1 point. The score at the half was 24-22 Pittsburgh. They took the lead at the half on Ronald Ramon 3 point shot at the buzzer.
The second half was much of the same. Pittsburgh came out strong and was on fire from the floor. But UCONN withstood the run and stayed within 4 points for p
The UNC Lady Tarheels overcame a late 18-4 run by the UCONN Huskies to win by the final score 82-76. Leading the way for the Lady Heels was LaToya Pringle with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Erlana Harkins had a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. UNC’s star point guard, Ivory Latta, overcame a rough first half to score 12 second half points for a total of 14 in the game. Kalana Greene once again led the Huskies in scoring with 23 points and team high 5 steals. Three other Huskies were in double figures as Brittany Hunter, Charde Houston and Ketia Swanier all added 10 points.
North Carolina got out to a lead early but 20 first half turnovers by the Lady Heels allowed UCONN to keep the game close and only trail by 5, 41-36 at the half. UNC got out to a double digit lead in the second half but when Erlana Larkins picked up her fourth foul, UCONN went on an 18-4 run to take a two point lead. Ivory Latta hit a big three point shot with the game tied at 76 and the Lady Heels adde

On Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion, Kalana Greene and Tina Charles led the Huskies past the Syracuse Orange by the final score of 76-45. Greene had 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Tina Charles had another double-double, 14 points and 19 rebounds. She also added 5 blocks to the cause. The 19 rebounds were a career high for Tina Charles. Charde Houston added 11 pts and Renee Montgomery rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points and 9 assists.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
Kaili McLaren and Brittany Hunter did not play in the game. McLaren has been bothered by a foot injury and Hunter is still having issues with her right knee.
Tina Charles 19 rebounds were the most ever by a freshman in UCONN women’s basketball history.
After scoring 23 points the other night, Mel Thomas only scored 6 points. The Orange played a box-and-1 defense on her most of the game.
Renee Montgomery and Charde Houston had a
Ousmane Barro’s 17 points and 13 rebounds led the Marquette Golden Eagles past the UCONN Huskies by the score of 73-69 on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. Jerel McNeal had 19 points and Dominic James had 17 points for the Golden Eagles. Doug Wiggins led the way for the young UCONN Huskies with 19 points while Jeff Adrien added 18 points and 7 rebounds.
It was a typical Big East game. Very physical, lots of half court sets. Both teams struggled mightily offensively in the first half as neither team was able to do much. UCONN shot only 29% in the first half but was able to be within 4 points at halftime. Considering all the turnovers UCONN made they were lucky to be that close at the half. UCONN tied the game at 44 all but Marquette went on a 10-0 run to essentially put the game away. UCONN, courtesy of Doug Wiggins’ 3 point shooting, made a valiant effort at the end of the game to try and get back in it but it just wasn’t enough.
Notes and observations:

Here’s a little something I came across over at Ramblings From The Runway, written by Chip Malafronte who writes for the New Haven Register. The 2007 UCONN football schedule is pretty much set as far as the teams they will play but nothing official as far as dates or times. It seems as though Navy dropped UCONN from their football schedule. No reason as to why Navy did this. So let’s take a look at what we know for the schedule next year:
September 1st at Duke. Duke was 0-12 last season.
September 8th vs Maine. Maine was 6-5 last season and plays in Division 1-AA.
September 15th vs Temple. Temple was 0-11 last season.
September 22nd at Virginia. Virginia was 5-7 last season. This game seems to me like it will be UCONN’s first test of the season.
Akron replaced the Navy game on the schedule for next year. The game was to be played on November 10th. Akron was 5-7 last season.
The Big East games at home for next season will be South Florida, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Louis
Mel Thomas led four UCONN Lady Huskies in double figures to an 106-58 victory over the Seton Hall Lady Pirates. Thomas finished with 23 points, while Tina Charles had 20 points, Charde Houston 19 points, and Renee Montgomery had 17 points.
There wasn’t much doubt to the outcome of this game as the Lady Huskies came out firing on all cylinders. After basically being singled out by Coach Geno Auriemma, the backcourt duo of Renee Montgomery and Mel Thomas responded with a combined 40 pts, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists, 8 by Montgomery. Charde Houston kept her game going from the last one as well. Tina Charles also responded to the criticism she received. For the Huskies to make a run deep into the tournament this year, they are gonna need this type of play no matter who the opponent is.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, McLaren, and Houston.
4 Huskies were in double figures at the half. Charles was 7 for 7 had 14 points, Houston 13 pts, Montgomery 1
Matt Scherer, the UCONN Hockey Captain, won $25,000 in his appearance today on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”. The question that Scherer got wrong was this one:
"The Guinness Book of World Records measures the world’s fastest talkers based on how quickly they recite what? A) Twas The Night Before Christmas, B) “To be or not to be” soliloquy, C) The Gettysburg Address, D) The House That Jack Built"
Scherer guessed C but the correct answer was B. Having made the magic mark of finishing with no worse than $25,000 dollars, his incorrect guess only cost him a shot at the million. Not bad for a kid in college. Congrats Matt and good luck the rest of the way this hockey season.

Glen “Big Baby” Davis, an All-American last year, led the LSU Tigers to a 66-49 victory over the UCONN Huskies on Saturday Night in Baton Rouge. Davis had 16 points and 8 rebounds. Tasmin Mitchell added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Garrett Temple chipped in with 14 points and 7 rebounds. UCONN was led by Jerome Dyson with 12 points. No other Husky was in double figures.
It was an ugly game for UCONN as they had only 4 assists to 19 turnovers. A very non UCONN performance. They didn’t shoot the ball any better. They shot only 31.6% percent from the floor. The 49 points was their lowest scoring performance of the season. Their previous low was 53 points which they scored in the opening game victory vs Quinnipiac.
UCONN’s foul shooting was abysmal. They were 11 of 24 (45.8%). I am sorry but this is just not going to do it. If they keep up this great free throw shooting it is going to be a long season Husky fans. They played sloppy the whole game. They had a decent
Tennessee’s first shot was an air ball.

Nice move by Charles to tie the game at 17 then Spencer
In a game they may have been overlooking, the UCONN Lady Huskies struggled to victory over the West Virgina Mountaineers by a final score of 63-44. UCONN had 3 people in double figures led by Charde Houston’s 16 points and 9 rebounds. Kalana Greene added 15 points and 9 rebounds while Tina Charles came off the bench to score 13 points and added 12 rebounds.
The Lady Huskies may have been looking to Saturday’s annual matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers and came out slugglishly in the first half. This has been the norm the past three games. West Virginia came out strong early but struggled later on as the Huskies took control and they never got close again.
Notes and Observations:
The starting five was Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, McClaren and Houston.
Tina Charles play off the bench has been superb the past two games. It seems to me that even though this is probably the first time in her life she hasn’t started a game, she is better suited for this at the time. It gi
In front of a sell-out crowd an announced crowd of 15,174 at the Hartford Civic Center, the UCONN Huskies bounced back from their loss on Saturday to defeat the South Florida Bulls 69-50. Jeff Adrien led the way for the Huskies with yet another double-double, 16 points and 15 rebounds. Jerome Dyson also chipped in 16 points. AJ Price rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points.
Before I get into my notes and observations I would like to say this. I watched the game on television and noticed a lot of empty seats at the game. At one point they panned into the 300 level of the Hartford Civic Center and most of it was empty. So for UCONN to announce a crowd of 15,174 when there was easily at least 2 to 3 thousand empty seats in the place. It brings me back to my minor league baseball days when I would attend the New Britain Rockcats games that had the 2,000 fans and the GM would announce a sell-out.
Notes and observations:
The starters were the usual five: Price, Dyson, John

In the Big East opener for both teams, the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the UCONN Huskies by the final score of 81-71 on Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, WV. West Virginia was led by Frank Young’s 22 points and Da’Sean Butler’s 16 points. For UCONN, they were led by Doug Wiggins’ career best 20 pts and Marcus Johnson’s 16 points.
UCONN got out of the gates slowly today and West Virginia took advantage of that. UCONN held the lead once at 1-0 and then trailed for the entire game. This was the first time since Dec 6th versus Northeastern that they had trailed in a game. It was also the first time they had trailed at the half all season.
Notes and Observations:
The starters were Price, Dyson, Johnson, Thabeet and Adrien.
I was impressed with Doug Wiggins play today. 10 of his 20 points kept the Huskies in the game in the first half. To me, he played like an upperclassman today.
UCONN came into the game today leading the nation in blocked shots with
Renee Montgomery and Kalana Greene led the nation’s fifth ranked team to a 62-36 win over the University of Hartford Hawks. For the Huskies, Montgomery had 16 points and Greene added 14 to the cause. They were the only two in double figures.
It was an ugly game in the first half for UCONN as the Hawks led most of the way until Renee Montgomery tied the game up at 18. From that point on, the Lady Huskies never looked back. They actually scored 18 pts in a row until the Hawks scored in the second half. The win moves them to 10-0 on the season.
Notes and Observations:
UCONN was without the services of Meghan Gardler and Brittany Hunter tonight. Hunter took the night off to rest her troublesome right knee that she had reaggravated against Oakland. Meghan Gardler missed the game after she showed back up to campus after the Christmas break with her elbow in a sling. She was “rough housing” with some friends and injured her elbow. It isn’t serious and she’s exp
Thanks to an 8-0 run late in the game, Connecticut went on to beat rival Syracuse, 67-60. This win improves our record to 15-8 and inches us closer to a .500 record in Big East play. Monday's win was not only big from the standpoint that it was a rivalry game, but it gave head coach Jim Calhoun 500 victories in his illustrious 21 seasons in Storrs and ran his career win mark to 749. In one of the most well-played, exciting games this season, the Huskies made the most of their opportunities down the stretch. Paul Harris had given Syracuse their last lead with a pair of free throws with 6:48 remaining, before the Huskies took control. Sophomore power forward Jeff Adrien made a pair of free throws to tie the game for the fifth and final time, and made another free throw later to put the Huskies ahead for good, at 58-57 with 5:43 to go. The Huskies had a balanced scoring attack on the evening. Austrie registered his season-high in scoring for the second straight contest by scor
If you couldn't tell by the title, apparently the Connecticut Huskies won today. And yes, I am a bit excited to say the least.UConn's five game losing streak finally came to an end Saturday. The Huskies knocked off the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 61-50. Now the game did go to overtime but Jeff Adrien went off, scoring 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Also contributing with big games were Jerome Dyson and Craig Austrie both with 13 points. Hasheem Thabeet had a nice game aswell with 8 points and 11 rebounds, he also blocked 5 shots. All I am concerned with right now is making the Big East tournament. We are cutting it close but with this win tonight we have moved into 11th place in the conference(top 12 teams make it). But if we can make it to the tournament then we have a good chance at hopefully going on a winning streak that will hopefully get us in the NCAA Tournament. Which is just 5 weeks a way. Can you feel the excitement?
