It is cheaper to export Turkmen and Kazakh natural gas to Europe through Azerbaijan than through Iran, said Matthew Bryza, the US deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Moreover, the United States seeks to limit Iran's international economic activities because of Tehran's uranium enrichment programme, Bryza told a news conference in Baku. He also called on Azerbaijan to export its own gas to Europe. This, he argued, would force Russia to face healthy competition on the European gas market. He also said that one of the purposes of his current visit to Baku was to discuss preparations for Azerbaijan's 2008 presidential election. He said the United States was working to build understanding between Azerbaijan's government, the opposition and the media. He expressed anxiety that journalists are being prosecuted in Azerbaijan for publishing false information and insisted that the journalists should have fair trials and as soon as possible.Via: NewEurope Blo
China's CNPC will sign a deal to develop a gas field in Turkmenistan during an upcoming visit to Beijing by the Turkmen president, an official close to the deal said Friday. The Chinese state firm has signed a draft contract for the Turkmen field, said the official, who declined to disclose the size or value, Dow Jones Newswires reported. The report comes amid a flurry of deals by Chinese government oil and gas companies to explore for and develop energy sources in former Soviet republics, Africa and elsewhere. An agreement is to be signed when Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov visits Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Turkmenistan has proven commercial reserves of 2.8 trillion cubic meters. China is in talks to buy 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan over 30 years. Turkmenistan and China signed a deal in April 2006 to build the pipeline and are negotiating prices. Iran and Turkmenistan will pump 30 bcm of gas per year to Europe
Turkmen authorities have announced the readiness of TNK-BP and LUKOIL to take part in the development of gas and oil deposits in the country. LUKOIL has been offered three blocks on the continental shelf. This is the first time that TNK-BP's interest in Turkmenistan has become known. Observers suspect that new President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov's desire for investment, rather than the Russian companies' desire to development Turkmen deposits that motivated the decisions. The announcements were made by the president's press service. LUKOIL confirmed that its president, Vagit Alekperov, had been in Ashgabat, but a source in the oil company said that “they hurried with the announcement about the lots on the shelf.” TNK-BP representatives, including chairman Robert Dudley and executive director German Khan, were in Turkmenistan Monday and Tuesday. That company has no foreign assets. It is about to lose the Kovykta deposit, one of its largest domestic assets. However, this is

Gazprom used up all its commercial potential in talks with Turkmenistan, as I said back in August 2006. When Gazprom head Alexei Miller personally approved the deal with Turkmenbashi Saparmurat Niyazov that Russia would buy the entire export amount of Turkmen natural gas in 2006-2010, it was clear that most generous dividends were offered to Turkmenistan. Due to this one deal, the
