All 11 state universities will charge in-state undergraduates 5 percent more come January, but they have very different plans for spending the additional revenue -- $9.5-million in all.
UF will use its $1.5 million entirely on hiring new faculty and academic advisors, while FSU will use most of its $1.4-million to restore money that was cut this fall from "critical" areas like library operations.
USF will use $1-million of its $1.4-million in additional revenue to restore course offerings cut this fall. More than $300,000 will go into need-based aid, and merit-based aid will increase by $106,000. UCF has similar plans, putting $1-million into course offerings and $550,000 into need-based aid.

We talked last week about the costs of higher education for students who want to study in the United States.Today, as our Foreign Student Series continues, we discuss a cost that students may not always consider : Health insurance.Medical care can be very costly if a person has an accident or gets sick. Health insurance might pay for most or all of it. Students might already be covered under their parents' health plan. If not, many schools offer plans of their own. Most American colleges and universities have student health centers. Some have hospitals where students can go for more serious problems. Our example this week is the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It has more than four thousand six hundred international students this year.University of Michigan students pay a health service fee. This fee is included in the cost of tuition at the school. It pays for some kinds of medical care and examinations through the University Health Service. It also pays for health education, phys
WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 — The Supreme Court on Wednesday let stand a ruling that the New York City school system must pay private school tuition for disabled children, even if the parents refuse to try public school programs first. But the justices are likely to take up the issue again soon, with nationwide implications. The justices split, 4 to 4, in the case of Tom Freston, the former chief executive for Viacom, and his son Gilbert, with Justice Anthony M. Kennedy taking no part. The tie meant that a 2006 ruling in Mr. Freston’s favor by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in Manhattan, stands for now. But it has no effect outside the circuit, which covers New York State, Connecticut and Vermont. The case has been closely watched by educators. Almost seven million students nationwide receive special-education services, with 71,000 educated in private schools at public expense, according to the federal Education Department. Nothing can rejuvenate the exterior of a home quite like a fresh new coat of paint. A good paint job can make even the oldest home look like new, but it is important to make sure that the color you choose matches not only your sense of style but the surrounding landscape as well.
It is important to pay careful attention to the exterior landscape of your home when choosing the right color. It is also important to assess how you feel about the current color of your home. If you like the color of your home as it is, perhaps all you need to do is brighten it up a bit with a fresh coat of paint or a lighter shade.
If, however, you have always hated the exterior color of your home and wondered what the previous owners were thinking, it may be best to make a radical change. We have all seen those houses where everything is attractive except the color, and a radical departure may be in order. After all, if purple and pink is not your style it may be best to make a complete c

Nothing enhances a dull room like a coat of paint. Whether you are brightening dingy walls by painting them white or adding a dramatic splash of color, paint is the least expensive way to make a noticeable decorative change in your home. If you are planning to paint a room soon, remember these handy tips and tricks to help you get the job done.
When you set out to paint, there is a lot of work to do before you get to the fun part of adding colors on the walls. The prep work can seem tedious, but you should never skip it, because if you prep your room correctly the painting will go faster and the end results will be much better.
Start your painting project by taking stock of what supplies you will need. If you are painting your room a dark color such as deep red or navy blue, you might need more paint than if you were painting the room white. These colors tend to soak into the walls and often need more than one coat to achieve the depth of the color on the paint sample

Perhaps it’s time to freshen up your home’s décor, or add some color to any plain, white walls offering no color or textural interest. Add some personality and style to rooms with some new paint.
Since it generally takes less than one hour to paint one wall in a room, painting tends to be a home improvement project people feel comfortable tackling on their own. Following are some tips to make painting projects quick and simple:
Select a quality paint. With paint, you tend to get what you pay for. Lower quality paint may produce a lower quality look. Find a mid-priced product from a name brand manufacturer for the best result at a reasonable cost.Prepare your work area. Make sure you properly tape, drape and protect any wood trim, windows, floors, carpet and furniture. Properly preparing your work area will result in a higher quality look and will make your post-project clean up much easier.

Now that you have taken into account the fixed features of your home, as well as the context of your neighborhood, you are ready to begin considering your available color options for the exterior of your home. Poor color choice can make your house seem flat, dull, and featureless, and you don’t want the colors you choose to overwhelm any aesthetic features of the architecture of your building.
Light or Dark Colors?
As a general rule, lighter colors typically brighten a house and make it appear more spacious, while darker colors can make the building seem smaller, but can also draw attention to the details of your home. Dark colors also absorb and hold more heat, so they may not be a wise choice in hotter, sunnier areas.
Muted tones are an increasingly popular choice. A few examples of these muted tones include such colors as Windsor Blue or Colonial Green.

Your house is your lifetime asset. And it’s a matter of time when you take a notice that your house needs renovation – not because it’s getting old, but because you feel the need of vibrant colors in your house.
Repainting your house is a tricky business. Some rely on painting companies to do the job for you. Hiring the house painting service may also cost you. But if you are planning to paint it yourself, you might want to consider the basics; and consider the time and effort you will put on painting your house.
PAINT
There are many types of paint available today, some giving different surface finishes, others are designed for a particular application. Choosing the correct paint type may appear to be confusing at first, but once you have projected which theme you would like to paint your house and sorted out which job and what finishes you want, the choice is rather easy.
There are two bases of paint for your house: solvent-based (oil or alkyd) and water-based

Painting exterior steel doors is a very manageable home remodeling project for most homeowners. You do not need any special tools or equipment, just some basic knowledge of how to select paint, how to prepare the surface, and how to actually do the physical painting. None of this is terribly complicated or difficult, so you can even make it a chore for a parent and a child to work on together.
When painting exterior steel doors, your first consideration is paint. Do not just head straight to the paint store, because the type of paint you need to use will depend on the type of paint already on the door. You can apply latex paint over the top of existing latex or oil-based paint but you cannot apply oil-based paint over existing latex paint. If you are not sure what kind of paint is currently on the door, then opt for the highest quality 100% acrylic latex paint (gloss, semi-gloss, or flat). Painting is one of the most commonly done home renovation or repair. It gives a new look to the house without making any changes to its structure. It is the easiest way to add new appeal to home aesthetics. Though many people like to paint their house on their own, it is advisable to hire a painting contractor for the task. A painting contractor does not only give you the perfect finish but also provides you with the best of professional services.
A painting contractor executes the project in a more professional manner, thus giving better results than any do-it-yourself work. A painting contractor would know what material would suit the best for the climatic and weather conditions in your local area. Also, the painting contractor is well aware of the local trends of the market. Moreover, a painting contractor’s crew would wrap up the complete project within fraction of time that you would have taken to paint your house single-handedly. So, there’s time saving also

Exterior painting can really make your house look fresh and new. With all the special protective elements now used in paints and stains you can maintain this fresh look for years to come. Yet, when it comes to the actual painting of a home, are you better off doing it yourself or hiring someone else? Your decision should be based on three different things: time, budget, and experience with exterior painting.
Exterior painting takes a lot of time to finish – especially when you have a larger house or more complicated structure. If you’re looking to paint your home on your own, you will need to free up a lot of time in order to finish the task. And for most busy families, this just isn’t possible – even over a long weekend. What you may want to realize is that the time you spend painting your own home adds up to money that you could be spending on hiring someone else to do the ‘dirty’ work. The best rule of thumb? If you have the time, but not the money, d

While many people choose one color for their entire home, some are more adventurous and want to include different colors. When choosing paint colors, you should be aware of the following in order to avoid mistakes:
• Size of the room
• Type of paint – flat, semi-gloss, latex
• Amount of sunlight that enters each room
• Who will be using the room
These factors play an important role in choosing paint colors that will enhance the look of your home and create a warm atmosphere.
PAINTING SMALL ROOMS AND LARGE ROOMS
The size of the rooms in your home is important when choosing paint colors because you don’t want to make a small room seem even smaller. Darker colors have a tendency to do this, so choose lighter colors when painting a smaller room.
You have a few more options when painting larger rooms. You can use a darker color, create an accent wall by painting one wall of the room a different color from the rest, you can create textured patterns, or you can a

The different rooms of your house require great attention as to the paint’s color. One color might suit a particular room in the house but will not be a very good sight in another room. That is why people who want to paint their house should have proper knowledge and experience in painting.
If you want a living room makeover, then you will need good painting ideas. Check out these living room painting ideas:
1. First and foremost, you need to choose the color scheme to be used in your living room. This means that you have to choose the paint colors for your doors, walls, accessories, trims, and other accents.
2. Base your color scheme on the living room’s largest furniture, the room’s focal point, height of your ceiling, the lighting, how the room is to be used, the room’s size, and the feeling that you want to create whenever you’re inside the living room.

Consider going to your local Lowes or Home depot or both and get as many color swatches as possible for color you are thinking about. If you are interested in a sky blue get as many blue swatches as they have just so you have as many to choose from as possible.
You could get your paint mixed right there if you know what color you want or you might want to take the swatch to a professional paint center like Sherwin Williams or Iowa Paint and have them match the color. That way you get the exact color you want in a professional quality paint.
If you’ll be painting an interior wall then most likely an acrylic latex paint will be the best choice. It makes for easy cleanup and is much less messy than an oil based paint.
Brush Selection
You are going to need a good quality brush for cutting in the ceilings and and trim. Most professional painters prefer a quality Purdy brand 3″ brush. You can find one at your local paint or hardware store for around $12. This

Sponging is done through the use of a base of the paint mainly because the paint distribution there on the wall surfaces is rough and sporadic so therefore a texture appearance is created. This is a cool concept to adopt especially if you are going to use a dark pain
A list of twenty tips and hints that will make painting easier. Tips include ways that will make clean up easier, how to protect surface, etc. Painting is a hard enough job without any extra labor. The following is a list of tips you should keep in mind before you start painting. They might not make you enjoy it, but they will make the job easier.

1. Make sure you have everything you need before you get started—especially enough paint. In general, a can of paint covers about 400 square feet. 2. Try to avoid painting on rainy days. The extra humidity in the air will cause the paint to dry slower. If this can’t be avoided, use a dehumidifier to help speed the drying process. 3. If you are painting a large room, don’t try and same money by purchasing the cheap rollers and brushes. The money you save will be minimal and won’t make up for sore hands. Plus, better rollers and brushes will help you work quicker. 4. Have your primer tinted the same co
With mortgage lenders shutting the door on home equity loans, parents of college-bound kids may have to rethink their school, and financing, of choice.
When you flip the switch, the light comes on. Turn on the faucet and the water flows out. Up until recently, many homeowners believed that access to equity financing was as simple and reliable as using those utilities around the house. Now it seems that the supply of money supporting home equity lending has run dry.
Change of tides
Just a few years ago, sharply rising home values created huge amounts of borrowing power for homeowners. Many non-housing industries were reaping the benefits, as homeowners tapped into that equity to fund anything and everything. At its meeting in Tallahassee next week, the Board of Governors will decide just how much to raise tuition this spring for in-state undergraduates at Florida's 11 universities.
The Board agreed at an earlier meeting to raise it by as much as 5 percent, in spite of Gov. Charlie Crist's veto this summer. But they wanted to hold off on deciding the rate hike until they saw how dramatically universities' budgets would be cut in the upcoming special session.
The billion-dollar budget-cutting session was put off and now won't be until Oct. 3-12. Board of Governors spokesman Bill Edmonds said universities can't wait that long because they're already starting to admit students and need to revise their financial aid packages based on the new tuition rate.
A 5-percent hike would cost the typical full-time student about $55 extra per semester. Meanwhile, the Board of Governors' lawsuit against the Legislature, asking a court to determine tuition-setting authority, drags on.
The Board of Governors, which oversees Florida's 11 state universities, recently voted to raise tuition by up to 5 percent for the spring semester that starts in January. And this week in Tallahassee, lawmakers from the House and Senate seemed open to just such a hike - their solution to stem some of the blood loss expected for higher education when the Leglature meets next month to deal with a $1.2-billion budget shortfall.
But former House Speaker T.K. Wetherell, now FSU president, told senators Tuesday that he won't raise tuition for in-state undergraduates this spring. Students already are paying more for health services, he said, and he'd rather give his Seminoles more time to plan their budgets for an increase.
So he'll raise tuition in fall.

All right now Malaysian Malay women (wanita Melayu)… Life nowadays is getting tougher, isn’t it? I’m sure that there are things, some sort of luxury that you have to sacrifice in your current life in order to survive. No more expensive clothing, cosmetics and etcetera. Yeah, it really sucks, isn’t it? :-(Now, how would you like to earn some pocket money to help turn things around a little bit? There is an opportunity that has been around for ages but many were quite reluctant to give it a try. I’m talking about giving home tuitions. Now, I’m sure that you would say that such opportunities are only good for those involved in the teaching professions. Yeah, I have heard that too many times all ready. But frankly, what’s the difference between a trained teacher and an ordinary person who teaches? Possibly none, am I right? It doesn’t really matter whether you are a full fledged teacher or otherwise. As long as you have the knowledge and you have the passion to teach and gui
The ongoing tuition battle between lawmakers and the board charged with overseeing universities is apparently interesting and important enough to merit space in the New York Times.
Stanley Fish, an FIU law school professor, wrote a guest column published in today's paper in which he lays out the power struggle playing out down here. The title pretty much sums up the dilemma facing public higher education in Florida: "Access vs. Quality."
Check out his column, listed in our comments section below.
Only less than half of UPCAT (UP College Admission Test) passers showed up to enroll in the different UP units. In Los Banos and Mindanao, less than 17% of passers enrolled. In Diliman, the entire College of Social Work and Community Development has one freshman. In courses like BA Malikhaing Pagsulat, BA Araling Pilipino, and BA Filipino, none of the passers showed up to enroll.
These are the numbers presented by fellow blogger Bikoy in one of his entries - dismal enrollment figures that point to the disastrous consequences of the blatant commercialization of education.
I wrote about the same topic in a letter to the editor sent to Sun.Star Daily’s opinion section titled “Education Should Be GMA’s Legacy.”

Gov. Charlie Crist met with the heads of Florida's universities this morning and agreed to sign a controversial piece of legislation that creates a tiered tuition system for Florida's top three research universities.
The bill would allow UF and FSU to charge incoming undergraduates up to 40 percent more than the base tuition for state universities starting this coming fall. USF could charge up to 30 percent more. The revenue, over $20-million for each college by 2010, would allow the universities to improve their crowded bachelor's degree programs by hiring additional professors and academic counselors.
Crist said he was willing to sign it if universities were willing to delay implementation until 2008, giving the Legislature time to come up with an opportunity, and money, that would negate the need for such a system.

Wrapped into the immigration bill that the senate will vote on this week, and probably pass, is a little thing that Ted Kennedy likes to call the DREAM act. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act. This bill would allow illegal aliens in-state tuition. This is absurd on it’s face.

Ay, yi, yi. The costs of college tuition are going through the roof! In 5 years, we're going to be paying for that college tuition. Oldest Princess wants to go to Princeton or Harvard. Can we say ka-ching? We're going to be looking at having to get a Federal parent loan for most of her education.I'm really loving that we now have the internet as a resource to look things up. Financialaid.com not only tells about loans in layman's terms, it even has a scholarship finder with over 8,000 programs totaling over $35 million! I remember looking over the bulletin board in high school searching for the few slips of paper with the names of scholarships I might actually qualify for. A website like financialaid.com is a wonderful site to help in that search. From what I remember about my experience with financial aid, everything was on a schedule. This form was due this time, make sure you turned this one in by this date, and don't forget to get this one postmarked by this date. Ugh
I missed my first tuition class for the entrance exam preparation of MCA and I don't know how will I go there regularly, because I am not a punctual guy at all, my timings are always 1-2 hrs late, never reached on time any where no matter whether its a interview call or my school days. Ummm perhaps I will reach on time on my first date :D
Many people have the perception that tuition coordinators work individually because they are fearful of their own clients being snatched away by other coordinators. However, tuition coordinators should work hand in hand instead to secure clients by their side. Why is that so?Imagine having many allies whom you can rely on to get tutors for your clients. How would that feel? Indeed, there might be a chance that your client then becomes loyal to your co-broke partner in future but it can be the same for you too! Just like you refer clients to your partners, so will your partners refer clients to you. In fact, yout clients will even be touched that you have their interests at heart and they end up becoming your loyal clients for long. Now, imagine having many other coordinators ally against you. Do you feel even more threatened because the chance of losing your client is even higher? Facing the many other choices that the opponents provide, how confident are you of servicing the parent wel

As we all know, tuition coordinators are also human beings and there will definitely be times when they fall ill. Have you wondered, what exactly happens when these coordinators take leave? Curious? Then, allow me to share with you my experience for the past few days. For these two days, I took medical leave as I was still sick from fever and cold. During these two days, there were incidents which took place that delighted me while there were also some which darkened my day. What made me upset was a parent calling to complain about a tutor not turning up for lesson. I expressed my apologies and listened on as the parent proceeded to talk about the tuition fees. At that point of time, I was feeling rather absurd because the parent did not clearly explain who she was. Eventually, I actually had to flip through my data before I realised whom she was. Well, perhaps you might call it the grumpiness of a patient but I guess we have to sympathise the tuition coordinators at times as well. Esp
The New York Times reports:Paying for private school is no hardship for Tom Freston, the former chief executive of Viacom, the company that runs MTV and Comedy Central. He left with a golden parachute worth $85 million. But he says New York City should reimburse him for educating his son in a private school for children with learning disabilities, where the tuition is $37,900 a year.In 1997, his son, then 8, was found to be lagging in reading, though not in math. The city offeredthe child a coveted spot in the Lower Laboratory School for Gifted Education, a competitive school on the Upper East Side that also has classes for students with moderate disabilities. He would have been placed in a classroom with 15 students, and given speech and language therapy.Mr. Freston, though, wanted a class of only eight students for his son, in a smaller setting. Without trying Lab, he put his child in the Stephen Gaynor School on the Upper West Side, where students, in Gaynor’s language, display
Last week, Quebec’s outgoing Premier Jean Charest declared that if elected, he would raise our provincial tuition fees from $100 per year during a mandate of five years. After a calculation, these tuition fees would merely reach a sum of $2400 after five years. Obviously, students who are members of the Fédération des Étudiants Universitaires et Collégiaux du Québec (FEUCQ) demonstrated and most of them showed their support to the Parti Québécois (PQ) led by André Boisclair.Without a doubt, it’s definitely Jean Charest, the leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec (LPQ), and Mario Dumont (who didn’t specify any numbers), the leader of the Action Démocratique du Québec (ADQ), who showed realism. While he knows that he’s dragging the image of a politician who is disconnected from most of us, André Boisclair nicely tried to entice people by taking a rhetoric shortcut.Average tuition fees in Canada (2005-2006)ProvincesTuition fee ($)Newfoundland and Labrador2606Prince Edwar
Although belonging to the same occupation, tuition coordinators from different agencies actually see their competitors as their greatest enemy. This time round, I would share with my readers a saddening experience that I encountered some time ago.Just a week ago, I was searching for a tutor for my client when I received an sms saying that he is keen to teach. As the assignment is quite rare, with lesson frequency of once in a fortnight, I asked for only a few details from him before closing the case. The details I requested included the number of years of experience he has in giving tuition, the levels and subjects he has taught before, and also if he currently has any student of the same level. After these details were sorted out, I messaged him the address, timing and date of tuition. For play safe, I passed him the contact number of the parent as well. Of course, tuition coordinators will only do this with the permission of the parent.I was so happy that I can clinch the deal when I

This entry is definitely familiar to many tutors and tuition coordinators. Think about it, have there been times when you are tempted to lie so as to close the case/get hired by the parent? For me, the answer is simply yes. Most of the time, parents will request for experienced tutors but sometimes, it is really difficult to find one that fits the bill nicely. The tutors who are experienced might not be satisfied with the rate or are willing to travel the extra mile. On the other hand, the tutors who are keen to take up the assignment have either no experience or little experience. At this point of time, you would probably be thinking to yourself, "How about just exaggerating about the years of experience the tutors have actually?" Of course, another side of you would be trying to abolish this thought because it is not the right thing to do. So which side emerges as the final winner is dependable on your determination to resist the temptation. I understand it is hard to resist sometime

The new governor of Maryland is a supporter for inclusive immigration policies, and could possibly have Maryland joining 10 other states in letting illegal immigrants to have in-state tuition prices at public schools. This reduction in school prices would save the illegal immigrants approximately $8,000 per year.
Democratic Delegate Victor Ramirez, who is the bill’s primary sponsor, says “The least we can do, if we’re allowing people to cut our yards, wash our cars, clean our houses for probably very cheap wages, the least you can do is let their children have an opportunity - that’s the American way.”
However, no everyone feels the same way. Some people feel that this is “the height of arrogance” for these immigrants for thinking they should be entitled to pay in state tuition while living in the US illegally. Also, people fear that if this bill gets passed it will put a financial strain on public schools and take up the available slots
