One of the most common childhood surgeries, tympanostomy tubes for earaches, are most often done inappropriately says a new study. Many people are familiar with tympanostomy tubes as they are used commonly in the treatment of earache. These tubes puncture the eardrum allowing secretions from the ear to drain out. A study published in the British Medical Journal made the following conclusion...r

Untying Tied Tubes: Bipolar Electrocoagulation History of Tubal Sterilization The first tubal sterilization procedure, reported in 1881, was tubal ligation and resection. For extremely high-frequency applications (above 1 GHz), the interelectrode capacitances and transit-time delays of standard electron tube construction become prohibitive. However, there seems to be no end to the creative ways in which tubes may be constructed, and several high-frequency electron tube designs have been made to overcome these challenges. It was discovered in 1939 that a toroidal cavity made of conductive material called a cavity resonator surrounding an electron beam of oscillating intensity could extract power from the beam without actually intercepting the beam itself. The oscillating electric and magnetic fields associated with the beam "echoed" inside the cavity, in a manner similar to the sounds of traveling automobiles echoing in a roadside canyon, allowing rad
In addition to performing tasks of amplification and switching, tubes can be designed to serve as display devices. Perhaps the best-known display tube is the cathode ray tube, or CRT. Originally invented as an instrument to study the behavior of "cathode rays" (electrons) in a vacuum, these tubes developed into instruments useful in detecting voltage, then later as video projection devices with the advent of television. The main difference between CRTs used in oscilloscopes and CRTs used in televisions is that the oscilloscope variety exclusively use electrostatic (plate) deflection, while televisions use electromagnetic (coil) deflection. Plates function much better than coils over a wider range of signal frequencies, which is great for oscilloscopes but irrelevant for televisions,
So far, we've explored tubes which are totally "evacuated" of all gas and vapor inside their glass envelopes, properly known as vacuum tubes. With the addition of certain gases or vapors, however, tubes take on significantly different characteristics, and are able to fulfill certain special roles in electronic circuits. When a high enough voltage is applied across a distance occupied by a gas or vapor, or when that gas or vapor is heated sufficiently, the electrons of those gas molecules will be stripped away from their respective nuclei, creating a condition of ionization. Having freed the electrons from their electrostatic bonds to the atoms' nuclei, they are free to migrate in the form of a current, making the ionized gas a relatively good conductor of electricity. In this state,
Similar in thought to the idea of the integrated circuit, tube designers tried integrating different tube functions into single tube envelopes to reduce space requirements in more modern tube-type electronic equipment. A common combination seen within a single glass shell was two either diodes or two triodes. The idea of fitting pairs of diodes inside a single envelope makes a lot of sense in light of power supply full-wave rectifier designs, always requiring multiple diodes. Of course, it would have been quite impossible to combine thousands of tube elements into a single tube envelope the way that thousands of transistors can be etched onto a single piece of silicon, but engineers still did their best to push the limits of tube miniaturization and consolidation. Some of these tubes, w
In the beam power tube, the basic four-element structure of the tetrode was maintained, but the grid and screen wires were carefully arranged along with a pair of auxiliary plates to create an interesting effect: focused beams or "sheets" of electrons traveling from cathode to plate. These electron beams formed a stationary "cloud" of electrons between the screen and plate (called a "space charge") which acted to repel secondary electrons emitted from the plate back to the plate. A set of "beam-forming" plates, each connected to the cathode, were added to help maintain proper electron beam focus. Grid and screen wire coils were arranged in such a way that each turn or wrap of the screen fell directly behind a wrap of the grid, which placed the screen wires in the "shadow" formed by the gri
An often neglected area of study in modern electronics is that of tubes, more precisely known as vacuum tubes or electron tubes. Almost completely overshadowed by semiconductor, or "solid-state" components in most modern applications, tube technology once dominated electronic circuit design. In fact, the historical transition from "electric" to "electronic" circuits really began with tubes, for it was with tubes that we entered into a whole new realm of circuit function: a way of controlling the flow of electrons (current) in a circuit by means of another electric signal (in the case of most tubes, the controlling signal is a small voltage). The semiconductor counterpart to the tube, of course, is the transistor. Transistors perform much the same function as tubes: controlling the flow
Tying Tubes Many people seem to imagine the fallopian tube is like a shoe lace that is tied in a bow to prevent pregnancy. As a tubal ligation reversal specialist, I wish it were that simple- then reversing tied tubes would be a whole lot easier! Perhaps a well meaning doctor may have told a patient one day, “I am going to tie your tubes so you don’t get pregnant.” Maybe the doctor wrote a letter to a medical journal explaining the procedure and then the terminology stuck. More likely, a reporter may have simplified the terminology for the surgical procedure of tubal ligation to make a catchy title for an article. Others may then have started using the term “tying tubes” to quickly explain a complex procedure. These explanations often have a long life span and make th

When running a record label every now and again you can't help but get the feeling that certain bands are starting to rule your life. For much of last year it was Meet Me In St Louis. This Sunday is exactly one year to the day from when I first received the recordings for their glorious debut, and only, album 'Variations On Swing'. From that day on, and many before it in all honesty, I thought about that band, spoke about that band, wrote about that band and listened to that band constantly. There were even a few occasions I had dreams about the band, as much as it pains me to admit it! They pretty much ruled my life in 2007, for better and for worse.2008 is shaping up to be a busier year than last with more bands, releases and tours booked into the Big Scary Monsters stable for the next 9

I received tube watercolor paints for Christmas, a small Winsor and Newton Cotman set. The tubes are so TINY compare to what I'm used to with acrylics. So I had to play with them. It really is a different experience from the pans and the crayons. Somehow mixing colors is more natural when squeezing out little dabs of paint than when using pans. I also tried some lifting out of paint, both with brush and paper towel, which are where some of the lighter areas came from. I thought the resulting 9x12 sheet was really pretty neat, but ended up cutting it down to two 5x7 sheets to achieve better compositions.

Scariest thing ever in the last few years, considering the bride looks like she is 12 and I was asked repeatedly when my wedding date to James was planned. There are cliffs I can find prior to that ever happening. So I am free to find a brown or green dress, hopefullt show up in clothes. Threatening nakedness just to upset the Catholiv wedding, thpugh I think most will be unphased. But nonetheless, outside of all this, not having the internet is killing me. Killing.
Ever since the nanoworld got excited over carbon nanotubes there has been great interest, and progress, in the development of new nanotubes based on metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides, elemental species and others. The characteristic that all these tubular structures have in common is a hollow morphology which may possess circular, or square-like or hexagonal-like cross section. In a standard tubular structure, a cavity is located at the center and extends over the entire length, so that the tube cavity and the tube wall have the same symmetry axis. Structures in which an internal cavity strongly deviates from the center of symmetry towards one side are rather rare. Researchers have now synthesized novel, unconventional nanotubes that are distinctly different from any p
Tis The Season To Be... Photographing!
Okay, that is most likely one of the worst title lines I've written. However, the holiday seasons really are more than just a time to be stuck at a mall, fighting with relatives, or wondering for the N'th time, why EVERYONE ELSE is so annoying. It's also that special time of year to reflect and take in the smaller things.
In this case, it's a great time, to grab your camera slap on the macro or extension tubes, and take a closer look at things.
It's time for a little creative holiday close-up/macro photography!

As ridiculous as it sounds, sometimes people who suck at sports feel the need to make up their own -- I assume this is how dodgeball got started -- or they took to heart the child acronym K.I.S.S. (keep is simple stupid) when inventing this new sport.
Here are the rules:

2. No stabbing. Lunges involving tubes are never allowed under any circumstances.
3. Try not to work the face. Hitting people in the face is heavily frowned upon and can force your ejection from the event.
4. Once your tube is broken you must stop fighting.
5. You may not block your opponents tube with your arms, hands or legs.
Actually, despite appearances and adult-like anticipations, this is a highly disciplined, well, maybe not highly, but at least somewhat disciplined play battle ... aka the opportunity to whack the daylights out of another adult and not get into trouble.

Right now the Basstrix Paddle Tail Tube is the hottest thing around and hardly anyone can get their hands on any, I have heard they are going for $20 a pack on eBay right now. If you have not seen them, this is what they look like. I have not used them myself, but have heard tons about them and they sound like the real deal. Recently I have come across a few other baits that look pretty similar and are much easier to get your hands on as well maybe a bit cheaper. Not too different then the original chatterbait, when they were impossible to get, many companies duplicated and in some cases came out with superior baits, so here is your chance to possibly be ahead of the curve and find maybe something better :)First off, is the Money Lures Money Minnow, when I first saw it, I thought it was a BassTrix minnow. The moment we came across this stylish iPod case we knew we had to feature it here on TFTS as we don’t doubt that it’ll prove extremely popular with those looking for a hard wearing, protective case for their iPod that not only looks the business but is unashamedly eco-positive (have we coined a new term here?) in being made from recycled inner tubes from trucks and tractor tires.
Bound to appeal to those keen to display their green credentials as well as those looking for a practical iPod case that not only looks cool but is somewhat more substantial in nature than most, this inner tube iPod case is one of many hand made bags and cases on offer from the Passchal web store, the purchasing of which will see a new lease of life for items that would doubtless be destined for landfill or incineration at the expense of the environment.
And, if anyone is thinking that this is yet another company merely climbing onboard the green bandwagon, think again – in having to approach the comp
Using Extension Tubes To Do Closeup and Macro Photography
I recently picked up a three piece extension tube set from Kenko. The Kenko DG Auto Extension Tube Set for the Konica - Minolta AF Maxxum Mounnt.. The tubes were fairly well constructed, not super solid, but they locked in place just fine and allowed AF and aperture setup to work. If you haven't got the money to sink in a true macro lens, you might want to give these extension tubes a try!
I'm continuing to shoot with them, but I have got some nice photographs... and a new appreciation of dust on subject matter...

If anybody's wondering why I haven't posted any new teen decorating stuff in the past week, it's because first and foremost my mom has been sick and needed my help. But if she had to be sick, it couldn't have come at a better time. I needed a break. You can tell when you need some time off when you jump into a project and NOTHING goes as planned. I was hanging a fabulously beautiful pair of multi-colored silk drapery panels on some hammered iron rods and rammed a hole in the girl's wall. Yep, poked a hole big as a fifty cent piece right through the drywall and was that child ever miffed! She calmed down once I offered to pay for the damage, but not a lot. To change the subject I told her we could spend the day together on Saturday shopping at one of my favorite wholesale warehouses and gather some decorating ideas for the rest of the bedroom. Whew. I don't want to lose a friend over a piddly hole in the wall! We are going to look for some fabric to upholster a headboard

In my previous post i wrote about the Ad Bag from Alchemy Goods, which is a bag made from recycled banner ads. Now i want to tell you about The Haversack.
This bag is made from 100% waterproof recycled bike inner tubes, the adjustable strap is made from recycled seatbelts. My favorite thing about this bag is that it has groovy internal and external pockets to keep everything in its place. I hate a messy bag, don’t you?
Take a look at (the pics of the inside pockets) which good for storing your pens, pencils, and their is also a pocket for your note pads. The bag even has a key clip to keep your house or car keys nice and handy. Very very cool features.
This bag is smaller than the ad bag, it measures 6×6x11 (but is expandable). The Haversack retails for $88 at Alchemy Goods.

Thankfully we had a relatively uneventful morning as 2 of our 4 (Austin and Tyler) got tubes placed in their ears. The most stress was keeping Tyler out of trouble in the waiting room. He is so very busy right now. He kept going up to this little 13 month old girl, patting her on the head, smiling and saying "baby" in his flirty little voice. You never know when he'll sneak in a bop on the head, so we had to keep a very close eye on him. They did the boys' procedures back to back. Tyler was first and by the time they got Clif from pre-op to post-op he only had a couple of minutes before the doctor came to report. Austin's surgery was a little longer since he had to have a tube left over from his first set removed before the second set was put in.Nobody cried or carried on (including mommy and daddy). The hardest part was when they put the mask over them to get them to go to sleep. Neither of them liked it too much, but it only lasted a few seconds. They told us that the gas tastes ok

How do you propagate a plant that only flowers every 60 to 120 years? Certainly not from seed.
And division isn't all that easy either - especially when it relates to non-invasive species of bamboo. You can rule out grafting, cuttings, leaf propagation, root propagation: all of them are fairly redundant when it comes to reproducing a plant wrongly stigmatized as a pest.
The key, it appears, is in scientific plant tissue. Test tubes are now becoming the new birth centres of many of these plants after Jackie Heinricher and Randy Burr, owners of Boo-Shoot Gardens started experimenting with possible ways to cultivate these species.
The result is an incredible array of clumping bamboos that may someday threaten the cotton industry as becoming the fabric of ecological choice.
Believe it or not, I get 2 to 3 emails per week asking if I know what some long-lost candy from someone’s childhood is. Previously, I had been answering the ones I knew and posting a few of the ones I didn’t. From now on, I will collect all of these emails each week and post them on Monday in one “Name That Candy” post. So here are two from last week:

I don’t remember the colors, but for some reason I think each one may have been multicolored, and I think at least one kind of them was blue and red.
I live in Minnesota, but I’m quite sure that it wasn’t only a local candy. I think th

First you get an empty paper towel tube and put
it on the baby’s foot.
Then you get another one and do the same with the
other foot.
Now you have rabbit feet.
Of course, it’s only a matter of a couple of
kicks before she ejects them. That’s when you resort to Plan B. You put them on her arms.
What do you do with tubes on arm?
You karate chop.
And you pose like a “homey.”
And you make threatening faces.
And sometimes you hit yourself.
But you don’t let anyone help you.
Because you’ll be fine in a sec.
You’re a ninja.
