There’s another Star Wars movie coming out. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” an all-CGI installment in the unkillable franchise, opens on August 15th. Who wouldn't support an effort to pay for college for G.I.'s who have willingly suited up and put their lives on the line, who in many cases have served multiple tours in combat zones and in some cases have been wounded? We did it for those who served in World War II. Why not now? Well, you might be surprised at who is not supporting this effort. The Bush administration opposes it, and so does Senator John McCain. ~ more... ~

An 18-month BBC investigation for Panorama has found evidence that:- Pakistani peacekeepers in the eastern town of Mongbwalu were involved in the illegal trade in gold with the FNI militia (described by Human Rights Watch as "some of the most murderous individuals that operate in eastern Congo"), providing them with weapons to guard the perimeter of the mines.- The Indians traded gold, bought drugs from the militias and flew a UN helicopter into the Virunga National Park, where they exchanged ammunition for ivory.A UN investigation concluded that one officer had been responsible for dealing in gold - allowing traders to use UN aircraft to fly into the town, putting them up at the UN base and taking them around the town. But the UN decided that "in the absence of corroborative evidence" its

The agriculture ministry said in a statement the "orange" vigilance level was extended to the whole country after previously covering only the badly hit southwest. The ministry said it had confirmed 20 outbreaks involving the H5 virus, of which at least six were the deadly H5N1 subtype, since the first case was reported in Gimje, 260 kilometres (162 miles) south of Seoul, in early April. It is investigating 14 more suspected cases, including one on a farm in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometres south of Seoul. ~ read on... ~

In an April post on the Los Angeles Times’ blog “Jacket Copy,” Tony Perry -- who covers the military for the LA Times -- reported on books he had seen being read by Marines on bases in Anbar province in Iraq. Perry said that one way to show public support for U.S. troops in Iraq is “by sending them books, lets of books.” Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information in the post, nor did I get a response from an email, as to how to go about donating books to deployed military personnel. Frustrated, I turned to “Andi H,” the wife of an active-duty soldier who in 2006 partnered with Military.com to create www.SpouseBuzz.com -- “a blog written by military spouses for military spouses.” Andi’s email reply was prompt: www.BooksForSoldiers.com. More US troops for Afghan force The US intends to send a "significant" number of extra troops to aid Nato's effort in Afghanistan in 2009, Defence Secretary Robert Gates said. The unspecified increase will come regardless of whether US troop levels in Iraq are reduced later this year.US President George W Bush had told Nato leaders about the anticipated troop boost during their summit in Romania, Mr Gates said. The US currently has about 17,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan."The president indicated that he expected in 2009 that the United States would make a significant additional contribution," said Mr Gates. He was speaking to reporters on his plane as he flew from the Bucharest summit to the Gulf state of Oman.'Bipartisan support'The defence secretary added combating Taleban insurgents in
Time -- Ambassador Richard Williamson, the U.S. special envoy to Sudan, told Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the letter that additional troops are the best hope of increasing security in the Sudanese region.A joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force took over in January from a beleaguered AU force to try to stem the violence. But it only has about 9,000 troops and police on the ground, out of a total of 26,000 that have been authorized.
Unsurprisingly, the U.S.'s NATO allies have just about turned down requests to deploy additional troops to Afghanistan:
Afghanistan loomed as the summit's No. 1 topic, a point of contention between some Europeans who see the NATO mission as largely a humanitarian effort and the Bush administration and others who see it as a central front in the fight against terrorism.
Canada had threatened to pull its troops from the front lines in southern Afghanistan unless other allies sent an additional 1,000 combat troops to help.
NATO has about 47,000 troops in Afghanistan, but commanders are pleading for more troops in the south, where Taliban insurgents are wreaking the most havoc.

A national tour featuring decorated veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan won't be stopping at Forest Lake Area High School today as planned, after school leaders abruptly canceled the visit.
Steve Massey, the school principal, said the decision to cancel was prompted by concerns that the event was becoming political rather than educational and therefore was not suitable for a public school.
He said the school had received several phone calls from parents and others, some of whom indicated that they may stage a protest if the event took place.

Germany’s refusal to send their Afghanistan-based troops into the volatile Southern provinces is symptom of much larger issues. By standing on the sidelines, the Germans join so-called NATO members Italy, Turkey, and that fierce-fighting nation France in supporting the War on Terror in words and little action. While the Northern part of the war-torn nation cannot be considered ‘safe’ by any means, the decision to keep the much-needed military and equipment support away from those actually doing the fighting in the South – especially the United States, Canada, Britain, and others – has shown a growing rift in the NATO alliance over the issue. Purely political, the governing bodies in the countries in question have failed to get the message of the necessity of the war to their r

A group of 300 Turkish troops crossed into Kurdish territory in northern Iraq overnight and moved about three kilometres deeper into Iraq on Tuesday morning. A senior Iraqi military source said the Turkish troops were lightly armed and moved into the Gali Rash area, a mountainous district near the border. This first ground incursion comes as Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, made an unannounced visit to Kirkuk in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region.Turkey says it wants to flush out Kurdistan Workers' party (PKK) fighters that carry out attacks on Turkey from bases in Iraq.Jabbar Yawar, a spokesman for the Kurdish peshmerga security force, confirmed the incursion. I've experienced the blessings of giving back, many times over. Here's an opportunity to support the men and women who far from home during the holidays. It doesn't matter whether you support the war. The people in our military are following orders to support our country and should be honored and appreciated! As I sit here noticing the lack of noticeable action going on in the world today, I find myself thinking about something from a couple weeks ago that annoyed me greatly but I chose not to write about it at the time for some reason or another. There were reports in the news regarding the military enforcing even stricter anti-porn policies for troops at the behest of groups that oppose that sort of thing. I’m sure they’re trying to ban R-rated movies, video games, and every other piece of bit of entertainment that is supposedly the cause of all the wrong in the world because that’s what they do. Their currently trying to force the military to not only ban hardcore porn (which it has) but also to ban softcore material like Playboy and whatever they mean by the term “All-American entertainment”. What the hell does that even mean? Stupid people with stupid agendas, and there’s no real reason for me to attempt to sugarcoat it with anything other than

The Gallery Collection, whose web site is www.gallerycollection.com, is a Corporate Holiday Cards Company that offers a wide variety of greeting cards, Christmas cards and plenty other cards for special occasions. However, the best part, in my opinion, is what they have done to support our troops who are at war.
They have supported the Soldiers Angels, who offers aide and comfort to all of the men and women who are serving our country. The Gallery Collection as donated a greeting card to every soldier that wishes them a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year, plus they included a blank card so that the soldiers can write home.
If you would like to find out more information on The Gallery Collection, or to help them by buying a greeting card, then go to their web site at www.gallerycollection.com.
