Before America invaded Iraq, officials in the Bush administration estimated the war might cost tens, at most hundreds, of billions of dollars. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes lay out very different figures in their new book, "The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict." In it, they tally data on everything from troop pay to equipment to veteran's entitlements to larger social and economic costs, and examine how mismanagement, opaque accounting, and the privatization of the conflict have resulted in a megabill that Americans could be paying back for the next half-century.Stiglitz: "You can look at it and say, "This is a small percentage of a rich economy," or you can look at things like the proposed children's health-insurance prog

      Global warming's trillion dollar debate
UN scientists say climate change is happening faster than thought as politicians head to Bali to hammer out Kyoto's successor. The fourth and final UN report on climate change, due Saturday, is expected to emphasize that the warming of the planet is "unequivocal" and that humans are the main cause. That report will act as a blueprint for the next crucial round of climate talks starting next month in Bali, Indonesia. The Bali talks will set the groundwork for the successor to the Kyoto treaty, which expires in 2012. They will also guide global climate policy for at least the next decade, and dictate the types of long-term investment decisions made by big industries and utilities. Under current policy, it was generally thought the world would warm by about 5 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050, enough to trigger those severe effects."But 2050 isn't really a great guess anymore," said Gary Yohe, a professor of economics at Wesleyan and an author of the report. So many scientists and policymake

From Los Angeles TimesIt's a world milestone as shares of China's largest energy producer begin trading on the Shanghai stock exchange.By Dawn C. Chmielewski, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer November 6, 2007SHANGHAI -- PetroChina Co. became the world's first company valued at more than a trillion dollars Monday, catapulting over U.S. energy titan Exxon Mobil Corp. as eager Chinese got their first shot at investing in the oil giant when its stock began trading on the Shanghai exchange.Shares of PetroChina nearly tripled as investors scrambled to get in on the offering. The stock opened at the equivalent of $2.24 and traded as high as $6.52 before closing at $5.90.That price, plus the value of shares traded on the New York and Hong Kong exchanges and those held by the company's government-controlled parent, gave PetroChina a total market value of $1.1 trillion -- more than double Exxon Mobil, at $486 billion.[Read more]

China's PetroChina now the biggest company in the world worth 1 TRILLION dollars
Following on from my story about the richest man in the world being from India, it has now come to pass that the world most valuable company by market capitalization is a Chinese company - PetroChina. PetroChina Co. shares more than doubled in their Shanghai debut Monday, giving the oil giant a $US1 trillion market capitalization and easily surpassing Exxon Mobil as the world's largest company. The run-up gave the oil giant a market capitalization more than twice that of US based Exxon Mobil. To put this in context - the market cap of PetroChina is 10% larger than Australia's GDP (Gross Domestic Product - Value of Goods and Services produced in 1 year) However using production metrics, Exxon Mobil is still significantly bigger than PetroChina. PetroChina produced 1.06 billion barrels of oil equivalent last year, compared to Exxon Mobil's 1.56 billion. Exxon Mobil reported revenue in 2006 of $365.5 billion and earned a net profit of $39.5 billion. PetroChina's 2006 revenue was only

Democrats not sure if they can blow a couple of trillion
Since House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel unveiled his “Mother of All Reforms” tax bill last week, both sides of the aisle have been buzzing with discussion. On the Republican side, Representatives are bemoaning the impact the tax bill will have on middle income families, and how the rapid increases would all but erase the cuts implemented by President Bush.On the Democrat side, they are running out of ways to spend all that money. It has been reported that the bill could raise anywhere from a trillion to a sizeable $3.5 trillion over the next 10 years. Attempting to spend every penny of this large sum of money is proving to be a daunting task.“Let’s take my healthcare plan and double it,” suggested Presidential hopeful, Senator Hillary Clinton, “Double healthcare for everyone!”“Let’s give a couple hundred million for border enforcement,” said Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, “And let’s also give a couple hundred million to healthcare

GWB may well be the great acronym-inal epithet for the next couple of generations, as in ‘Go GWB yourself.’ The cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could total $2.4 trillion through the next decade, or nearly $8,000 per man, woman and child in the country, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate scheduled for release Wednesday. A previous CBO estimate put the wars’ costs at more than $1.6 trillion. This one adds $705 billion in interest, taking into account that the conflicts are being funded with borrowed money. The USA Today story is here: War costs may total $2.4 trillion.

The reason this program needs a listener support group, is that there are many folks who want WETS to remove the program.Yesterday WETS aired a voicemail that came into the office. It was a colorful rant against WETS. In the voicemail, a woman goes on to say her name is "Hillary Socialist" and that she wants to "make a pledge of sixty trillion dollars [...] and give it to y'all for the socialist communist work that you do." I am absolutely SHOCKED that this ever made it to national TV on Sixty Minutes. It is surprising that the drug industry did not have enough influence over CBS to prevent this from being aired. This is, without any doubt in my mind, one of the biggest scandals in the history of the United States. The drug companies are bilking the U.S. public for AT LEAST $1 trillion. The late Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois was fond of saying when he was referring to the Defense Department budget, "A billion dollars here, a billion dollars there and before you know it you are talking real money." Well folks, we are not talking about $1 billion, we are talking about $1,000 BILLION. Interestingly, the smart person’s favorite candidate for the U.S. presidency, Ron Paul, commented on this bill when it was initially introduced four years ago.
