For four hours, we trekked along the rice terraces of Mayoyao. The good thing about the trek was that it was going down and our bus was going to meet us when we arrived at the bottom of the trail. It may have been tiring at times no thanks to the hot sun. You just need to be fit to go there.

Last Sunday Jessica and Nick departed Bishkek, after finishing up their time teaching at The London School. Before they leave Kyrgyzstan, they’re spending a few weeks traveling around the country. The first leg of their journey took them from Bishkek to Kochkor (where we bought the shyrdaks on our way home from Naryn) for some horse-trekking with CBT, and they invited us to go with them.Sunday morning, Nick, Jessica, Katy, Alyson, Ben the Younger (as opposed to Ben the Elder who went with me to Ala Archa), Matthew and I set out for Kochkor. Like our trip to Naryn, this journey began with crazy haggling for taxis in front of the bus station. I was able to negotiate us a private minivan to take us all to Kochkor for the price of 1400soms, which I thought was a pretty good deal. However, I

Finally, I got to swim in the crater lake of Mount Pinatubo! And the water was light blue to blue green! There's an annual cycle of water color changes and it usually turns blue when the weather is cold. During other months, it turns murky brown. I still don't know why exactly.I've always wanted to see Mt. Pinatubo. After all those planned trips that never pushed through, I was getting eager and impatient to see its famed crater lake. That's why when I received a message that our trip today might be canceled due to the weather conditions, I was devastated. It was raining in Batulao when I got the message but I said let's decide later. And so we waited. The final decision was to push through! And the sun smiled on us this morning. We left Starbucks 6750 at 6:30 a.m. and stopped over at one o

By: Steve Manik You should take extra precautions while going for a trekking tour. The tour can be extremely exciting and full of challenges to fill you with vigor. However, most people forget to follow good precautions so that they can make their tour more interesting safe and memorable. Here are some safety tips for you if you have already decided to go on a trekking tour with your friends and have some great time. a) Shoes:These are the most important items when it comes to trekking. You should go for the correct boots in order to enjoy the trip. If you fail in choosing the best pair of shoes for yourself, half of your journey would end up in pain. Hence, it would be prudent to spend some of your valuable time in choosing the correct pair of shoes for a great tour experience. b) Gender-specific booth:This is especially designed for women. These possess an anatomically accurate shape known as a “last”. The toes should not touch the end of the laced-up boots when you walk down a s

There is a group who has packed trekking supplies, put on boots, taken tents and food supplies in backpacks. They’ve gone off yesterday morning to try and find the little girl that has been eating up all y time in the day. She comes out late at night and talks to my husband. She isn’t anywhere near us though and we’re really not sure where she is.
No one has been beyond the fogged edges before. I was pretty okay yesterday, but today the stress is getting hard to deal with. Not everyone went, well.. obviously seeing as I am here to write this. There are mostly the younger ones, a couple of us stuck around to watch them and keep tabs on village functions.
We don’t know where this little girl is. Her world seems to be apart from ours, but they went to go look. She told my husband what her house looks lik

I made a noteworthy change to the early part of my ’round the world backpacking itinerary. It’s a change in route, rather than countries I intend to visit. Apparently, from the new book I started reading a few days ago, Trekking in Nepal by Stephen Bezruchka, this would put me in Nepal during the monsoon season which runs from July through late September. The author indicates trekking in monsoon weather can be an adventure unto itself, however the idea of constantly walking in the rain, up and down slippery slopes, while coming across washed out bridges does not appeal to me.
So, with a little rearranging, I figure I can head in a clockwise manner an
