Ok, I'm back in the treetops once again! I think I know why this has become such a fascinating study for me. The main living areas in our house are on the second floor as is the deck so whenever I look out a window or sit on the deck I'm literally up in the treetops. I look out the windows a lot, that's simply a function of being a nature lover, bird and wildlife watcher and a landscape painter. I sit out on the deck a lot too even when the weather is cold. If the weather is sunny and tolerable on a February afternoon you're likely to find me eating my lunch at the picnic table on the deck! That would be immediately followed by a walk around the yard looking to see if the snowdrops or crocus are poking through the earth yet LOL A few years ago we replaced all the windows in the house with....larger windows of course! So this series of paintings simply ref

Autumn is definitely a time of changing weather. Gray stormy clouds can roll in and cover up previously blue skies in a few moments. The wind kicks up, tosses the trees and scatters leaves in the air. A bit of rain falls and then as suddenly as it came it departs. The wind blows a gain and the dark clouds are sent to do mischief elsewhere and the sky is blue once again. Autumn is a restless season.

Another treetop painting before all the leaves come down. It interesting to observe how the colors change based on the light, whether bright or overcast. Nature is so full of variety the painting possibilities are endless.

It looks as if "treetops" will become a small series. I am enjoying the challenge of simplifying all the thousands of colored leaves into a pleasing design that works visually and also captures the impression of treetops so the viewer knows what she's looking at. These little paintings are deceptively complex and need to be approached as a purely abstract pattern first getting color, value and shape orchestrated before any though goes into details like trunks and branches to make them look like trees. I'm very absorbed in the painting process when I'm working on these... painting very intuitively.....great feeling for an artist, in the "zone" as they say. Look for more of these to document the change as the season progresses. Enjoy!

This is one of the big benefits of living in New England....all the gorgeous fall colors! We are a few weeks behind schedule, hitting peak color now instead of on Colombus Day, and I'm glad. Autumn is such a fleeting season that it's nice when it hangs on a little longer.
