This month's edition of CNN Business Traveller (hosted by Richard Quest) is about reading and books: the things I'm most interested in! I watched it twice on TV, and it was very good. Anybody who is a traveller or an avid reader (or both) should watch this edition. It will introduce you to some historical bookshops such as Shakespeare & Company (in London). It compared the new books of the

Why is mankind condemned?
Why does the ocean carry death?
Fly to the past, I’m back in time to help

My journey has just began
And don’t, don’t try to stop me

A little while ago, I put an obscene amount of time into creating a community aspect to the site. Being my first venture into such things, I didn’t know if it would take off or not but wanted to launch it nonetheless as I truly believed there was still a place for it.

I was home, in Belgium, this weekend. Taking the train back to Brussels airport, I was surprised how green everything still was. And how beautiful it looked. The fields were much smaller and looked more cramped next to the other, compared to what I am used to in my second home, in Italy. But its beauty still amazed me. And it took me by surprise that I was amazed. After all, I have seen this scener

There is nothing worse than being overweight and out of shape. However, you get used to it and find comfort zones in your own world. This all ends and can humble you when you travel. This guy claimed that he has met himself in the future. Is it possible to travel in the future or he just wanted to get people's attention by making fake story. He told that he "went to the future" and recorded him and himself at the age 70. In theory, it could be possible and a scientist would have to say nothing is impossible. But if he really "went to the future" he should show more proof
Around five years ago the glossy travel mags started talking up Croatia as the next hot destination and travel journos were writing about the country as if it had only just been discovered. The Croatian National Tourism Board saturated the global media with their 'Mediterranean As It Once Was' campaign and everyone bought it. And bought tickets to Zagreb. We spent the summer there in 2003,

There's probably a few clunkers in DaVinci's sketchbook, too. Looking more gnarled than Van Gogh's Potato Eaters hand studies, Ivan Volkov's Porsche Traveller concept picks up design ideas from the Matchbox Fandango, though it doesn't look like the spare wheel on the Traveller incorporates Rolamatic action. Rather than heap massive derision on Volkov's renderings, it would be interesting to get a deeper explanation of the design goals and features incorporated in this car. The SUV/CUV appears to have a pickup-like division between the front and rear body sections, and one thing's for sure, it's got absolutely no chance of seeing production without much further refinement. We'll grant that the Cayenne isn't the most classically handsome conveyance to roll out of Zuffenhausen, but Volkov's T
VENICE, Italy–If there was ever a glorious tourist destination that seemed out of reach to someone in a wheelchair, it is Venice, where travelling a few blocks often means crossing steep, stepped bridges.Even for Pat Broderick, who has wheeled through Egypt, South America and Nepal, the watery island city had long been an unfulfilled life goal. But the intrepid traveller refused to give up. So, the two of us took off to conquer Venice.

Last night on JourneyMan, JM spoke with a professor or educated man on the subject of tachyons, particles that can travel faster than the speed of light, and therefore theoretically go back in time. JM lied that he was working on a book in which the hero had the same problem he does. The guy travels through time haphazardly. The Tachyon guy said, With such a tremendous power, it's a wonder no one is taking advantage of him. He acted oddly mysterious. JM hinted at the fact that while he was in the past at one point, he received a phone call from the Tachyon guy, apparently in the present, but possibly in the past instead. My theory is that while JM was hinting that his "book's" hero was him, the Tachyon guy was hinting that what might happen to the hero (i.e., being manipulated by a higher power) is already happening to him. He had mentioned that God might be controlling the "leaps." Maybe he's right, and he time travels to do good works, but unfortunately the government or some
"Journeyman" is a neat show with a lot of potential. Generally, I like it. I've heard rumors of its cancellation, but maybe it can hold out for a while. However, there are some serious flaws with the logic of a couple of important characters. Specifically, the Journeyman and his wife.Last night there was a preview for next week's episode. In it, Journeyman is whisked away by unknown forces to another time, leaving his young son outside, alone, and in the middle of an area crowded with strangers. How absurd is that? The show has already established that the Journeyman (JM) has no control whatsoever over when he leaves. He and his wife should know that by now. I had trouble understanding it a few episodes ago when JM and wife tried to board a plane after JM had already vanished from a previous flight, subsequently causing some airport commotion. Are you kidding me?? If JM vanished from a flight and forced his wife into custody for a few hours once, you'd think he'd be smart en

A sardar is traveling via train. On his way, he feels the urge to go to the bathroom. So he goes and opens the bathroom door, which happens to have a mirror in the front. The sardar thinks there is another sardar bhaiwaal in there, quickly shuts the door and returns to his seat. 5 minutes later he goes again, only to find the same sardar bhaiwaal. An hour passes away, he's made 20 trips to the bathroom, only to find that the same person is still there. So he finally gets ticked off, goes to the lastcompartment and tells the TC (Ticket Checker) what's been going on. The TC, which also happens to be a sardar, feels bad for him and promises to throw the bum out. The TC walks down to the compartment with the troubled bathroom to get the resident bhaiwaal out. Few minutes later the TC comes bac

So, it was that time of the year again...time to choose the next destination - time for some learning - a journey closer to home. This time I decided to visit Europe, to learn about our history, to gain an understanding about what happened in the Second World War. So, I was off to Poland. The trip started when I landed at an unfamiliar airport and shuffled onto a mini-bus with a group of strangers, all nervously introducing ourselves to each other... ...and that's where my first realisation commenced... ...I was getting on a minibus that was almost entirely populated by teachers... ...my first thought was to shrink down into my chair... oh my goodness, 2 weeks talking about school curriculum's and naughty children... this initial emotion was short lived as I began to chat to everyone. The first destination - Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. We were dropped off at our first hotel and soon off to the old city centre for some refreshments. That evening, the group were introduced to ou

The following is an email I originally sent to friends when I was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. At the time it was my second time there, having previously been in 2004.The first time I was there I didn't even venture out of the capital, much to everyones disbelief. Inexplicably drawn to the bar scene (inexplicably?), I spent a month staggering from one bar to the next, and then back again. My second time proved to be no different. The only notable exception being that this time I was there for the best part of three months and spent considerably more money. A lot more money.Having read the email again, my immediate thoughts are why I'm so hell-bent on returning? You do the math. Anyway, below is the email for your viewing (dis)pleasure:Alright folks? It's time for an update. As most of you are aware, there is usually an underlying theme to my emails (alcohol), and this one will not break with tradition. That said, slightly different style this time. I will try and enlighten you as to what
Travelling can be a little bit like - bear with me here - popping yourself into a sort of time-machine wherein the space-time continuum is temporarily suspended: you get into a big metal flying contraption and find yourself some hours later in a different time and place where you fritter away the hours in a life that is not really your own, not your own real life, before getting back into the
Having given up on finding anything half-decent or remotely interesting to do in South Korea, I and some friends have decided to go to North Korea. Needless to say we are all very excited in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.Notwithstanding the photographs I will be able to post here, a number of unique writing opportunities present themselves. Ethics aside, possible post titles could include the following:"The Day North Korea Met a Total Spender""The Total Spender - The new Dear Leader?""The Theory of Total Spending Enjoying Rapid Growth in The Secret State""Kim Jong-Il - Yet Another World Leader Seduced By The Theory of Total Spending""North Korea Seeks Help From International Community After Total Spending Spree""The Politics of Empowerment In Postmodernity: The Rise of Total Spending In North Korea""The Contradictions of Capitalism Reconsidered: North Korea Embraces Theory of Total Spending"Whatever. You get my point. The trip in question is around $400 for a weekend (not inc
I awake to find the stewardess serving food. This is neither here nor there, because how I see it I need to drink the 80,000KRW cab fair that I had just been stung for. The stewardess asks what I would like to eat and I inform her that I'm easy, as long as it ain't none of that foreign muck. I ask for two Heineken's. I'm given one. Bitch.Thankfully, there's only a small queue at immigration so I'm waiting for only ten minutes or so. The bird asks me where I'm staying and I realise that I'm completely smitten. My immediate thought is to say I want her children but decide against it. I instead tell her where I'm staying and am ordered through.I have a much needed cigarette once I'm outside. It's at this moment that I realise I'm completely smitten with the bird who is smoking next to me. My immediate thoughts concern marriage and all the money I could solicit from friends at home. I also think about how our children might look. I decide against telling her this an
"Don't miss your flight."I was chatting to a mate online the night before my trip to Japan and the above were his last words. Had they come from anyone else I wouldn't of thought anything of it. However, being said by this particular individual gave them an air of unwanted poignancy. For reasons of anonymity, let's call him 'The Man From Bloomberg'.When I first had the misfortune of coming to Korea in 2005, I invariably had leaving drinks the night before. Unsurprisingly, said drinks continued into the morning. When everyone departed I and The Man From Bloomberg continued to drink into the early hours. I inevitably fell unconscious and awoke to find my plane was due to depart in about five minutes.Seeing as I was over ninety minutes away from the airport and still drunk, this proved to be extremely disconcerting, particularly in light of the fact that I'd previously racked up some major debt due to Total Spending and had to leave the country sharpish. There was also the iss
i love to watch people. i do it at home, sitting in a cafe for example, and i do it while travelling. i found khao san road in bangkok, thailand, to be one of the best places to indulge in my hobby. you just sit down in a restaurant with a chilled beer and watch the world pass by. there’s israelis with dreadlocks and wearing bandanas, english burnt by too much time in the sun and too little sunscreen, swedes, tanned a dark brown in their boardshorts and cultivating that surfers look, german tourists trying to blend in to the whole traveller scene and in between them all left over hippies on a short visit from the last full moon party in goa.
nowadays, you can actually interchange all those nationalities. the country-clichés are slowly disolving i think, but there are still different types of travellers:

What is it that distracts you?
I’ve been a bit distracted lately by a desire to buy a car I’m in love with, the Nissan 300zx. after actually pursuing it a couple of times now I think I have finally convinced myself to forget about for now. I was planning on selling my current car which is a relaible and economical little thing for this sexy potential pain in the backside fuel guzzler. Buying one would set me back at least 6 months on my travel plans in exchange for driving a real car for once.
My DistractionI’ve been battling with this for a while and asking myself “what will I get more out of?” of course I think travel. I imagine buying this car would give me a lot of satisfaction but if I died soon after would I be happy with how I lived my life? No. Quite simply owning any car no matter how impressive doesn’t count in my eyes to as an indication of how well I have lived. I imagine although I would probably be satisfied with the car I would be
My Mum just called me, which was unusual in itself at 10 o'clock at night. When the phone rings at that time I tend to assume it's either going to be a dead call, a heavy breather or some kind of emergency. In this instance it was my Mum with an anecdote.A year ago last November, a gentleman of the road had turned up at church in a merry condition one Evensong. Mum and the churchwardens had chatted with him and got him to quiet down when he was being a bit rowdy, but he sat at the back and enjoyed the service. It was a cold night so Mum asked him where he was going to be staying. He intended to bed down in the churchyard and wouldn't hear of any offer of a bed. He was provided with a flask of tea and that was that. He left again in the morning.Well, it seems he has reappeared. Looking rather neater and more sober this time round, he sat at the back during the Ash Wednesday service this evening. Mum chatted with him afterwards before going home to make him some sandwiches an
