It is a rare thing for a U.S. Ambassador to write an open letter to travelers urging them to consider visiting a country, but that is what the US ambassador to Kenya, Michael E.Ranneberger did this week. In light of the unrest Kenya and the resulting drop in tourism to the country Ranneberger’s remarks should [...]

The current crisis in the USA and their intentional policy of a weak dollar hurts travelers all over the world; especially those who really just do travel and are in need of refilling their wallet from overseas. Still there are ways to keep your currency risk to a minimum and prevent loosing too much if the dollar exchange rate goes not in your favor. In the end it is all about perspective -- Southeast Asia is still very cheap compared to many other places in the world and even though a weak dollar might cost you an extra beer on your night out, the party is not stopping right there. All the more important to look for a good deal (like the Free Nights Offers I just wrote about yesterday)...Nomadic Matt had this to say:"A little piece of me dies everyday. The venerable Italian luggage firm Valextra has teamed up with renowned yacht maker German Frers to create travel pieces specifically for yacht goers. Inspired by 19th-century trunks, but designed for practicality and function, German Frers’ soft trunk ($3,480 or $4,790 for the larger version) can be dismantled and folded to optimize the limited space on a boat (or a private jet for that matter). The trunks and garment bag are made of a high-tech waterproof (no need to worry about storms at sea), scratch-resistant material that has the soft feel of leather and is worthy of any man's most precious cargo.
Over 100,000 workers walked off the job in all sectors, in order to express their opposition to government plans aimed at reforming the country’s pension scheme. I love hearing travel adventures from backpackers and love to see the photos of the places they explored and people that they met. But one thing that irks me is that they often leave themselves out of the shot!

Tourists who are planning a business tour to China must have complete knowledge about the culture of China, China business, global sourcing into China and China import and export. The best way to do it is to attend small workshops or training sessions that are specially organized to impart knowledge about every aspect in China business. The cultural training enables the China business travelers to get an in depth comprehension of the acceptable behavior. The tourists or business group undergoing such training get to learn about the business ethics and norms of China business as well as present themselves in a different nation. At the advent of China's peak Lunar New Year travel season, the number of travelers arriving in Guangzhou was expected to rise Monday to 600,000 and local authorities scrambled to arrange temporary shelters at schools and other public buildings, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Also according to the Japan National Travel Association, travel to the U.S. Mainland has declined 6.2 percent through November, while travel to Canada is down 14.8 percent through October.Australia, New Zealand, Guam and the Northern Marianas also are seeing fewer Japanese travelers. However, Japanese travel to Bali, Indonesia, is up 40.7 percent, while trips to Macau have increased 34.4 percent.
Transport officials said Tuesday that the number of trips is expected to set a new record, up from 2.17 billion last year, partly as a result of changes to the country's official holiday schedule.China adopted a new schedule this year, which saw the cancellation of the weeklong May Day holiday and the Spring Festival holiday being brought forward by a day to start from the eve of the Lunar New Year, which falls on February 6, instead of the first day of the festival.

What if future humans come back in time from some unknown date and visit us on December 21, 2012? What if they come from the date people say marks the real end of the Mayan calendar, in the year 4 thousand something? What would their purpose be?To be vague and abstract, and steer events without us understanding how or why? Or to be direct and informative, and give us future tech? Or to prevent us from annihilating ourselves, or to solve global warming, or to give us clean energy, or to defend humanity against aliens? What if they disguise themselves, and we never realize they were us in the future? Then we aspire to be like them, until we become them and visit our previous selves or earlier generations?
If you love photography and/or travel, you should definitely check out Everywhere Magazine. It was created by the same people who created JPG Magazine, and it operates on the same principle: User Created Content. You can upload photos, stories, or simply names and locations of interesting places. I've been uploading as much as possible (you're limited to 20 photos per day) since in a little more than three weeks I will be in the land of spotty internet. My Everywhere travelogue is here, if you're interested. Sadly the themes for Issue 2 of the magazine (which is published as a full color magazine on high quality paper) are Los Angeles, Places Reborn, Turkey, and Hotel Bars, for which I don't really have any submissions. (Here's hoping they choose Russia and South Korea at some point!) Anyway, I definitely recommend the site... it's tons of fun. And if your photo or story gets published, you'll receive $100 plus a free subscription to the magazine! (If you create a travelogue, pl

Since the last few years, I have been hearing good reports about the business and tourist scene in Dubai. Our speaker (cum good friend), Ron Kaufman, travels to Dubai so often that it's almost a second home for him now. From him and other business associates, we have heard about the developments and growth in Dubai for both business and personal leisure. Therefore, if given the opportunity, DH and myself would love to take a trip to Dubai and find out why this city has become the talk of the town in the recent years. When it comes to picking an accommodation for our family vacation or trip, I'll always prefer an apartment over a hotel, unless I can't find any good apartments in the city we are traveling to. So when I came across http://www.dubaiapartments.biz/, I bookmarked it right away, knowing that this premier dubai apartments site will come in useful in time to come. Plane Sheets: Let’s face it, seats on planes are boring, and sometimes, kinda yucky. Who wouldn’t want a leopard print airplane seat cover? I’m not sure how practical this is, no one wants to be the annoying person holding up the boarding line because you want to get your plane sheet just so on the seat, but for an international flight, might be cool.

“Pay extra or leave your fat behind on terra firma.”
That could be a new airline rule in the near future if a proposal by Australian health experts passes into law. The proposal intends to charge obese passengers an additional tax for every extra kilo they weigh. According to Dr. John Tickell who’s heading the Australian committee behind the proposal: carrying a whole load of heavy weight cargo costs airlines fuel, and if you’re the one bringing all the additional weight on board it’s only fair that you should pay for it.
The sentiment is cynically practical, but you can expect discrimination charges to begin flying around faster than you can say “Jenny Craig.” In actuality, it’s a polite way of telling hefty passengers, “No fatties, please – at least not for free!” Any attempt to set a prescribed weight limit for flying is liable to open up a legal can of worms.
It begs the question of how skinnier travelers will respond to such rules if they are imple

If you're flying for Thanksgiving, brace yourself.Beginning today, the busiest period for holiday air travel will be busier than ever, with a record 27 million passengers, up 4% from last year, jamming airports and stuffing planes over a 12-day period.
Sane, thoughtful people know that money doesn’t buy happiness. Nothing new there. But sometimes it’s hard for day-dreaming cubicle jockeys to imagine quitting a cushy 9-to-5 desk job to pursue their fantasies of long-term travel.
Good news according to a recent article in Newsweek:
Psychologists have spent decades studying the relation between wealth and happiness,” writes Harvard University psychologist Daniel Gilbert in his best-selling “Stumbling on Happiness,” “and they have generally concluded that wealth increases human happiness when it lifts people out of abject poverty and into the middle class but that it does little to increase happiness thereafter.
LifeHacker sums it up best:
If you can get yourself into the comfort of middle class living, keep in mind that the longer and harder hours you’re putting in to climb the ladder from this point on probably won’t make you any happier.

By: Sammy MasekoThere are a variety of holiday travel insurance policies available today on the internet or the market. When you purchase your travel health insurance, you're likely to have several options regarding the amount of coverage, what specific health benefits, and a form of trip insurance (in the event your trip is cancelled or your luggage is lost, you're covered). Most travel insurance policies are designed for a variety of travel needs but, I emphatically advise reading the fine print of any policy you purchase regarding any deductibles and health situations.Cash back credit cards are a great way to get some of your money back that you spend using your credit cards. Now it’s all about rest and relaxation on a beach (64%) in a germ-free zone.
TripAdvisor, a travel Web site, surveyed more than 2,500 travelers globally, finding the greatest concerns were about germs.
“The major trends we’re observing are that travelers value cleanliness above all else and are becoming more environmentally conscious,” Michele Perry, spokeswoman for TripAdvisor, said in a statement.
The survey found 80% of respondents were concerned about germs, bacteria and viruses when traveling.
Airplanes were deemed the most germy, according to 28 percent of those polled, with public transportation next, followed by restaurants, hotels, and airports.

Our journey throughout life is filled with experiences that involve traveling into unknown territory. We are all explorers by nature, who seek out different paths to follow in pursuit of our destiny. Our way is lit by motivation to achieve our goals, and the road is cleared by our determination to succeed. Purpose propels us constantly forward, yet is it only about reaching our final destination? Or, is the journey what really matters? Stevenson seems to say neither - it's the...

I’m going to drop a couple blog entries tonight, just because I’m heading to Tokyo tommorow and thus all the blogs I have in the hopper will feel dated after that. This topic: travel. Big surprise. I’m starting to feel different about the “traveler” verses “tourist” divide. I’ve long fallen on the “traveler” side, because it seems to be the more authentic experience that falls more into my ethos. For the un-indoctrinated to this debate, “traveler” means that you travel with a backpack, wear a bandana at all times, you stay in the cheapest hostel available, and your ideal trip would involve a 243 hour trip on a non-air-conditioned bus in August through every country that ends in ”stan”. “Tourist,” on the other hand, means that you tour with a roller-bag, wear a fanny pack at all times, you stay in 4 star hotels that were pre-aranged by your tour company, and your ideal trip involves either a cruise, a week at Disney World, or a 7-day bus tour throug
Whether you are planning a fun weekend getaway, or a once in a lifetime trip to Europe or an adventure trip with the family, you don’t have to exceed your travel budget. Whether you’re 15 or 70, you can travel just about anywhere in the world for free, and even with a nice stash of cash in your pocket. This would be done by telling like-minded people about a trip and convincing them to go with you. The three top incentives to get people to do anything is cash, products and travel.
According to the results of an email survey conducted by the Incentive Travel Fact Book, 58% say travel is more effective than cash or merchandise. Whether you decide to go by plane, train or automobile, finding cost effective travel is the first step to planning a great trip. If you plan to travel by car, then the first step should be a visit to Map Quest for directions.

PARIS: Air France vice president for Asia Pacific Jean-Louis Pinson said Wednesday that the carrier would launch a service between Bali and Singapore based on a code-sharing agreement with Qantas Airways. The partnership will commence Sept. 11, Pinson told The Jakarta Post, in what he said was an opportunity to explore the possibility of opening up more routes to Indonesia.

John Frenaye over at TripSo.com has an amusing post on 25 “Stupid Traveler Comments” (along with the bemused agents’ unspoken responses).
A few of my favorites:
How much is a train to Jamaica? (We are sold out, but if you call Amtrak, they have space. Be sure to ask for a seat on the left side of the train so you don’t miss the Lost City of Atlantis on the way down.)
The hotel would have been fine but all the employees were speaking Spanish. (The next time you are in Mexico, we will order some French-speaking Mexicans for your convenience.)
I am a vegetarian. Do they have vegetables in Kenya? (It is a strange thing in Africa, countries with two vowels in their names are vegetableless. It is just like some dry counties here in the United States.)
Most single women avoid traveling alone abroad.
I know I did. Until I got a job that involved traveling alone every month, at which point I had to face the realities of being a single woman traveler.
I’ve had to use the men’s room more times than I can count. I’ve been proposed to by a stranger (thanks to a short skirt). I’ve even had to avoid another traveler whose psychopathic tendencies turned my friendly conversation into some sort of deep friendship.
But the point is that I’ve learned the hard way that when traveling alone, whether you are a woman, man or child, you have to be aware. Aware of culture and surroundings and how you are perceived by others.
Personal safety does not start with a bottle of pepper spray, it starts with being aware of your surroundings.
That being said, I am definitely not against letting go and having fun. Traveling alone has opened my eyes to so much, especially about myself.
It’s been invigorating, enlightening
If you happen to be reading this at work, my apologies for the PG-13 headline. Seriously though, you shouldn’t be reading this. Get back to work.
The ever humorous gapingvoid.com blog had a post entitled “Why We’re All Blogging Less”. Reason number 4:
Believe it or not, some of us have better things to do than to be continually justifying ourselves to a crowd of passive-aggressive, self-loathing, loser fucktards. Thankfully these folk are a minority, but their one skill-set in life seems to be in the less-than-noble art of “using up too much oxygen”. Which makes “Engaging in The Conversation” a lot less appealing for the others. Life is short.
That may sound quite harsh, but I think it’ll come as a surprise to some folks that many blog audiences are less than kind. As a web geek, I read my fair share of graphic design and web development forums and blogs daily. Often the comment areas of same devolve into nothing short of all-

Again, we travel. We go to be embraced by extended family for a few days, a reunion to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of my grandparents. I so look forward to the fellowship, worship and laughter that is shared when we are together!I am always amazed at how my sons click with their great-uncle; he and my papa take the boys on nature hikes and respond to their every question, listening intently to every word. They bring home rocks and sticks and bugs... it is a joy.I myself relish time in the kitchen with my sisters and aunts, brushing shoulders and laughing as we trip over each other in our haste to feed the hoardes of hungry men and children. We have quite the menu prepared; the sisters and I have been making extra casseroles and freezing them this month, along with about twelve dozen cookies (each!) to throw across the counter in between mealtimes. Lettuce and veggies from our own gardens will produce delicious salads, and for this we are so grateful. A bounty is even more bou
This past weekend I worked on a traditional wooden schooner (pictured above) sailing along the east coast of Nova Scotia up to Cape Breton. Continually being exposed to the world of sailing has made me realize the opportunity which boating has for the independent traveler.Have you every thought of owning your own sail boat? These are some of the many reasons why owning and traveling in your own sail boat can be so appealing to the independent traveler.
1. You really are completely independent and free to travel at will
Unlike other forms of transportation, sailing enables you to pick up and drop anchor where ever you like. On a moments notice you can travel almost anywhere in the world. The only thing stopping you is not the cost of travel (as it costs the same traveling as staying at anchor), but your ambition to take on another challenge.
2. Sailing can be very cheap
If you live aboard your boat, you can get away without paying any housing costs. Many sailors will come to shore
With the summer road trip season about to begin, drivers are developing strategies to economize, from planning where to fill up to reducing their mileage.
Before Angie and Donald Roberts get into their car to travel to the beach, they go online to determine where gasoline prices are lowest along their route.
Jamie Hampton and her fiance, Adrian Ortiz, like to get away by driving their
So you’ve decided to be a idiot long-term traveler and give up your life back home, albeit temporarily (maybe), to trot around the globe in a desperate attempt to “find yourself”. You’re no doubt having trouble finding the right words to say to the friends and loved ones you’re leaving behind. Enter someecards.com, with the tagline “when you care enough to hit send”. Every one of their e-cards comes with hand-drawn, inspirational artwork to accompany your sentiment.
For those folks seeing someone off on a long-term journey, perhaps these words are appropriate:
I’m already dreading having to look at your pictures
I probably won’t even remember that you’re away
Enjoy your time in that extremely sketchy place
Enjoy your time off from doing nothing
And for travelers enroute looking for something poignant and meaningful to say to the people they left behind:
Let’s have phone sex while I’m gone

Facebook has really taken off, given it’s unique platform and the benefits over other social networking sites like MySpace it’s not really a surprise nor is it that it is quickly becoming a favorite of travelers. Almost everyone wants to keep in touch with the people they meet while traveling and while there are a number of travel specific social networking sites Facebook has a lot to offer.
Although many have complained about it, it is the applications you can add to your Facebook profile that make it so fun and useful beyond just adding your friends.
Facebook is yet another designed to connect friends although unlike the MySpace popularity contest Facebook prefers that you actually know your friends. When you add a friend it will ask you how you know the person, are they related, a schoolmate, co worker, teammate, partner? Or for travelers, did you travel together and if so where to?
And like the others you enter the standard stuff to be shown in your profile like, age, r

SEOBlackHat.com had an interesting, off-topic post today on Online Banking and Currency Diversity. My interest is more in the latter. As an American who’s sat idly by, watching the U.S. dollar fall into the worst tailspin in recent memory, the article started me thinking on whether or not it’d be a good idea to open an international account in, say, British pounds, Euros, etc.
There’s no topic about which I’m more clueless than global currency exchange, so please let me know in the comments if this would be a pointless exercise in trying to recoup/save a little of the plummeting U.S. dollar I have stashed away.
If this is worth looking into, anyone know how to go about doing it? Can I just call up [fill in your favorite online bank here] and say, “Please convert my account to [fill in stable (i.e. not U.S.) currency here]?
On a side note, are there any additional benefits - particularly for travelers - to having an account in some other currency?

Tourists ride the all-terrain vehicle, a sea sport game at Pandanus ResortAfter 12 years developing as a tourist destination, Mui Ne, in the coastal resort town of Phan Thiet in the central province of Binh Thuan, is the home of some 80 small and large resorts which were built on winding pristine beaches and lie under thousands of coco trees.Traveling along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Road, travelers have many choices of resorts for their vacations.
