Flying: The Most Terrifying Mode of Transportation
My recent trip to Hawaii taught me one thing: man was not made to travel by air. I rationalize my irrepressible anxiety about flying by telling myself that a flight across five time zones would make anyone crazy, but the truth is that there are seven year olds who are more comfortable fliers than I am. They don't realize that the only thing separating them from a horrific, fiery end is a complete

      Public Transportation and Poverty
When I was out on the road today, I got to thinking about how much it costs to maintain and drive an automobile. Doing some quick calculations in my head, I came up with a rough estimate of $8000 a year for my family's two vehicles. That figure includes one car payment, gasoline, insurance, taxes, maintenance, and repairs. $8000 represents 20% of our household income - almost equal to the national average of 19%, according to the Thoreau Institute. This figure has risen from 10% in 1935 and 14% in 1960. Let's get hypothetical for a moment. Let's assume that every American household spends $8000 a year on transportation. That comes to a total of $880 billion for the entire country.  Now, let's assume that we all reduce our transportation costs by 10%; we can car pool, buy more fuel efficie

From the New York Times:“In almost every transit system I talk to, we’re seeing very high rates of growth the last few months,” said William W. It should come as no surprise that Governor Rick Perry’s newest appointments to the Texas Transportation Commission are pro-tollers, and that fur is already flying over the two appointments: The GOP governor’s support of private investment in public tollways as a key avenue for needed infrastructure is echoed by former aide Deirdre Delisi of Austin and a second appointee announced Wednesday, Bill Meadows of Fort Worth. Both appointees see private investment as an important part of the picture, though not all of it, and said they want to work with lawmakers. The Legislature has sought to curb such projects, alarmed the state would go too far in ceding control of Texas’ infrastructure. The truck owner will then pass the costs to customers," the foundation's director for economic programs Neil McCulloch said Monday. With the overall vehicle operating costs for trucks at 34 U.S cents per kilometer, the study concluded that Indonesia's lo

From The Harvard University Gazette:“Train travel will supplant highway and air travel in the next few decades,” Stilgoe says. “Furthermore, electric railroads will increasingly be used to distribute freight items — such as coal and grain — as well as mail and express packages.” He explores this scenario in a recently published book, “Train Time: Railroads and the Imminent Reshaping of the United States Landscape” (University of Virginia Press, 2007).Stilgoe cites investment and real estate activity as the best indicators of the impending railroad renaissance. He notes that in April 2007, for example, investor Warren Buffett purchase

Living with them in downtown-ish Fort Wayne, our choices were to walk or to take the bus.Yes, you read that right - the bus.I don't know when my first PTC bus ride was however, I wouldn't be surprised if it was before I was able to walk. There are things about the PTC that I remember like it was yesterday.* The fishbowl-type shape of the front of the bus* The changer located to the right of the bus driver (gosh! but I loved dropping the coins in!)* Oh! And at one time, all of the bus drivers carried one of those silver coin changers on their belt too.* The thick, silver-like string that I lived to pull. You kno

Hopefully the parking lot folks didn't charge our victim much to park in this spot because that would be rubbing salt into the wound. Tips on How to Save Money on Transportation
Prices go higher every year, especially the cost of gas. Transportation is one big factor that makes the household budget difficult to cover all your expenses. Here are some guidelines to help you save money from transportation:1. To save money, you must always check on your vehicle regularly. A well-maintained vehicle can get you out of trouble on repair expenses. You can actually spend only $50 on maintaining your vehicle and save up to $800 on repair costs in a year. You can even save more if you do the maintenance yourself and not bring your car into an auto shop.2. If you want to save more money, it is recommended not to buy a new car. The value of a car depreciates automatically when you drive it out off the showroom of the car dealer shop. You may buy a car that is used at lea

Be Frugal and Use Public Transportation
I’m in Canada and my grandfather is doing better now even though he will still be in intensive care for another few weeks.  It is a sign of relief for the whole family and hopefully it’s nothing but good news from here on out. Every day, we have a 35 km (approximately 22 miles) ride to the hospital.  We did some calculations and we are literally spending $20 on gas (our car in Canada still wastes tons of gas) and another $19 on parking every single day.  Since it is a full day event, we leave approximately 9am and leave around 5pm.  So the rush hour traffic was not helping make it any faster nor cheaper! Today, we decided to take the subway from now on.  We figured that the expense would be as follows considering that we have to drive to the subway station: $2 gas for driving to the subway station $5 parking (to park our car there) $16.50 (two way fare for 3 people) This means that we will save $15.50 per day, not to mention that we don’t have to waste our e

November is my last month, and I just have a couple of observations about the train I've been taking.See, one of the cooler things about commuting into downtown is the Sounder commuter train. It's fast, relatively comfortable, has WiFi on some of the cars and, since the end of September, has a relatively good schedule with five trains running as early as 5am from Tacoma. There are some people I'd like to say a few words to and since I'm trying to post every day, I thought I might say them here. So, to the guy who thinks it's just fine to tap me on the arm and ask me if I like my iPhone when I'm watching a TV show, please just read your book. My earphones are in, I've just finished up Jon Stewart and am rolling into the Colbert Report and someone wants to chat. Really. I bought the iPhone because it does a lot of neat things, l
