by Robert GillisBoston City paper 3/2008So, long MBTA horror story short, the blinking LED sign o’doom flashes that due to mechanical failure (quelle surprise!) the 8:16 will be late and adds that there are “crowded conditions.” So we happy commuters wait in the pouring rain as the sign soon changes to state that the “8:16 will not be excepting (sic) any passengers.” (Grammar isn’t big at MBTA headquarters, apparently, but hey, it isn’t on this site, either, so they get a pass on that one). The alleged 8:16 shows up at around, oh, 8:45, and for some reason STOPS, although it’s not “excepting” any passengers and no one leaves the train. Ads like the above have been appearing in bus shelters throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Another ad states "My son used to have his own ideas. Now he doesn't."This whole campaign seems like something out of a sci/fi movie like "The Stepford Wives" or "They Live". F*?CK!! I am panicking again. One of my colleeges told me that he had a transfer flight in the US and his wife had an old passport, and they had problems getting trough.I don´t have a transit visa, and I would not need to have one if I would have one of those new passports, but I have an old one, and I am not sure what the policy is with an old passport. I have been calling around all day and looking up info on the net, and I am getting mixed messages. The american embassy has not been open today, and they are the only ones who can give a definite answer.A transit visa should apperantly be issued immediately, so if I need one, I can hopefully get one on monday.Damn it! I am nervous about not being able to travel to Panama at all..... :/

Among the treasure trove, I found a very interesting book.. The cover was what attracted me to it! It had a smiling face of an elderly woman dressed in the Syrian Christian attire. The book referred here is Kerala Syrian Christian Favourites. I definitely bought this book and it contained lovely recipes and photographs. This is a musey post, you've been warned. I haven't posted much in months, mainly because I've been ridiculously busy trying to pay my bills. Now my seasonal job is ending and I ditched my office gig because it turned out sitting at a computer all day wasn't so great for me. As a result, I've had a bit more time to not only think, but also to write. Some of the things I've been thinking about will follow in separate posts. First:I live in a cold city. I recently bought a car (part of the unhappy bill paying stressy time) because transportation to one of my jobs was entirely unavailable and a car was required as shelter, and for the other job public transportation was unreliable and would mean two hours commuting time everyday or more if the bus didn't show up as expected. For a city that is clearly oriented around the automobile a feature of Charlotte that gave me hope was their soon to be open light-rail service, the new LYNX Blue Line. I was encouraged by this development because along the line you could already see transit oriented development going up in preparation for the line's opening. The benefits to neighborhoods such as The Southend will be significant because they already have some elements of a quality urban fabric but are missing the foot traffic to make them vibrant. Further the Uptown station has development along the tracks that include a Reid's Market and a couple of restaurants making it very convenient to shop or dine. This trip was in the works since I bought my P1 ticket on Cebu Pacific last February. But the funny thing was I had not planned at all for this trip! I simply rode the plane to Tacloban and played everything by ear.I had informed my brods that I was coming over. But I didn't want to hassle them.
