As gas prices increase so does the use of public transportation amongst Americans. The increase is occurring in both places where commuters have largely been drivers like Charlotte, Houston and Nashville and in areas where commuters have traditionally used public transportation like Boston and New York City. Certainly, the nontraditional cities will have to expand their public transportation infrastructure. From the New York Times:“In almost every transit system I talk to, we’re seeing very high rates of growth the last few months,” said William W. Millar, president of the American Public Transportation Association.“It’s very clear that a significant portion of the increase in transit use is directly caused by people who are looking for alternatives to paying $3.50 a gallon fo

Many Ann Arbor residents have been using alternative types of transport for yearsWith the rising cost of gas across the nation, some Ann Arbor residents may be one step ahead. Many residents in the progressive city of Ann Arbor have been thinking "green" for quite some time. Although society generally trends toward consumption, some Ann Arbor folks have found refreshing ways to give mother nature a break. Many are making lifestyle changes that not only help them to save at the gas pump, but are smart choices for sustainability. Buying smaller cars, walking, running, biking or taking the bus - all are viable replacements for transport. One Ann Arbor resident says that riding his bike offers more than just a monetary savings, "it makes me a better

by Dave MindemanOn Monday, the Lakeville city council has a vote to make on whether to join the Metro Transit Taxing District. To me that choice is whether to move Lakeville into a future of transportation choices or to stand still and let the rest of the south metro detour around them.Seems like a simple choice to make. For years, Lakeville community leaders have resisted joining the Transit Taxing District because the benefits weren't spelled out for them. They were "afraid" that other communities might benefit more from the pool of money they would contribute to -- while at the same time many of Lakeville's residents were pirating help from sister cities. Now, the Met Council has put it all in black and white. Spelled out a detailed plan of what would be available if Lakev

Westerbork
The community of Westerbork is situated in the northeast of the Netherlands in the province of Drenthe, 11 kms from the province capital of Assen and about 130 km (80 miles) north of Amsterdam. In a resolution proposed by the Minister of Home Affairs and approved by the Dutch cabinet on 13 February 1939, it was determined to construct a camp "to house the refugees from Germany that live in this country". Opened on 9 October 1939, the costs of constructing the camp, amounting to 1.25 million gulden, were charged to the Jewish Refugee Committee in the Netherlands.
When the Germans invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, there were 750 refugees residing in the camp. Initially moved to Leeuwarden, capital of the province of Frisia, they were moved back to West

If America is going to conserve energy and become more physically fit, a good place to start would be with the streets.

Since at least World War II, streets have been regarded primarily as conduits for cars and trucks. But if streets and their sidewalks and intersections were handled in a more far-sighted way, they would serve a bigger slice of the population — pedestrians, bicyclists and mass transit riders , as well as motorists.
Throughout the United States, a “Complete Streets” movement is emerging, causing more and more governments to broaden their outlook. According to a report last fall in the AARP Bulletin, 52 municipalities, six counties, 10 regional governments and 14 states have adopted Complete Streets policies. These policies r

Ads like the above have been appearing in bus shelters throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Another ad states "My son used to have his own ideas. Now he doesn't."This whole campaign seems like something out of a sci/fi movie like "The Stepford Wives" or "They Live". Aliens take over the bodies of parents and start turning their kids into "The Stepford Teenagers." Very scary.Using drugs to produce docile easily controlled people, definitely sends a negative message to me. Most of the free nations of the world have fought against totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany that advocated unquestioning obedience to a superior power.

I have been calling around all day and looking up info on the net, and I am getting mixed messages. The american embassy has not been open today, and they are the only ones who can give a definite answer.A transit visa should apperantly be issued immediately, so if I need one, I can hopefully get one on monday.Damn it! This is a musey post, you've been warned. I haven't posted much in months, mainly because I've been ridiculously busy trying to pay my bills. Now my seasonal job is ending and I ditched my office gig because it turned out sitting at a computer all day wasn't so great for me. As a result, I've had a bit more time to not only think, but also to write. Some of the things I've been thinking about will follow in separate posts. First:I live in a cold city. I recently bought a car (part of the unhappy bill paying stressy time) because transportation to one of my jobs was entirely unavailable and a car was required as shelter, and for the other job public transportation was unreliable and would mean two hours commuting time everyday or more if the bus didn't show up as expected. I don't like to
For a city that is clearly oriented around the automobile a feature of Charlotte that gave me hope was their soon to be open light-rail service, the new LYNX Blue Line. I was encouraged by this development because along the line you could already see transit oriented development going up in preparation for the line's opening. The benefits to neighborhoods such as The Southend will be significant because they already have some elements of a quality urban fabric but are missing the foot traffic to make them vibrant. Further the Uptown station has development along the tracks that include a Reid's Market and a couple of restaurants making it very convenient to shop or dine. What's great about this new service is that you could already see neighborhoods start to grow and maybe in the future Charlotte will have some vibrant neighborhoods worth exploring. To see more of Charlotte's new light rail system take a look at the flickr set LYNX Blue Line - Charlotte, NC
This trip was in the works since I bought my P1 ticket on Cebu Pacific last February. But the funny thing was I had not planned at all for this trip! I simply rode the plane to Tacloban and played everything by ear.I had informed my brods that I was coming over. But I didn't want to hassle them. I was already seated in the waiting jeepney when I texted my brods informing them that I had arrived. What surprised me though was a reply from one of them for me to wait at the airport since he would pick me up. So I got off the jeep and happily waited. It really touched me since we had never met before. He took me to the MacArthur Landing Site in the neighboring town of Palo. Just a few days before, on October 20, they had celebrated the anniversary of Mac Arthur's landing. We then had breakfast at the nearby MacArthur Park and Beach Resort, one of those classy resorts built during the Marcos days to house the Miss Universe candidates in 1973. It's supposedly a class "A" resort but service
Even tho I have never actually met DJB, Not that either of us remember anyway, I seem to have a good friendship with the lad, and we seem to have a joke about on the net and on google talk. Yesterday it took him the best part of a day to format and re-install windows onto a laptop (Even tho he is one of them geeky techno-types… altho he’s a developer not a designer as he’s told me before ha ha). Anyway… Back in march he did a blog post, talking about how much he wanted a Nintendo Wii, and how great he thought they were LINK. Anyway a good few weeks back he ordered one from the states or something, and it seemed to take an age to update the tracking info. Anyway after about 2 weeks, he found out it was in Amsterdam, and I joked that it was doing touristy things, like visiting the Red Light district, and to make sure he cleans his Wii when it arrives, for want of some disease Anyway thats the last he’s heard of it! The bloke at the other end has pro

Transit bus layover station. The project was supposed to cost 24 million. I think it is safe to assume that it cost at least that much.
The station takes up about half of the 4 acre city owned Cleveland Circle site. Parking ramps are not the most attractive urban structures and there is only so much that can be done to make it look nice. They kept it simple and that helps.

Budget condominiums near mass-transit lines and their planned extensions are expected to be hot sellers at the Thailand Condo Expo 2007, according to Atip Bijanonda, president of the Thai Condominium Association. Others promising locations are along the planned Red, Blue and Purple light-rail lines.

Transit advocates also hope to eventually bring the state’s first high-speed rail line to the modernized public transportation hub. Each design
Why travel? Some people do it for business, love, money, pleasure.
Why stay home? Others prefer to dream of distant places which never make it into their reality.
Then there are artists. People who continually explore the horizons of the globe and their own imaginations. The current Den Haag Sculpture exhibition ‘De Overkant/Down Under’ celebrates this impulse and 400 years of connection between Australia and the Netherlands with the theme ‘Curiosity, Discovery and the Desire for the Unknown’.
Royalty & Art: Yeah!
At the opening ceremony the Ambassador of Australia, Stephen Brady, spoke about the intellectual and creative purity that gives art the capacity to “inspire and challenge us, and the power to lift us from the repetition of daily life.” Quoting Dutch intellectual Rob Riemen, he said: “If there is anything – other than love and friendship – that can give meaning to life, it is the beauty of art.”
Ambassador Brady spoke of the role art play
Hairspray’s Brittany Snow revealed in the August issue of Vegas that her character, Sardoonah, basically wears nothing the entire movie and screws everyone in sight:
Hairspray actress Brittany Snow has been a bad, bad girl. In the upcoming drama Black Water Transit, Snow breaks out of her wholesome box to play the role of a troubled prostitute. "Basically, I have sex with everybody in the movie. I wear nothing the entire time," Snow, 21, reveals in the August issue of Vegas Magazine, on newsstands August 1st.
This is absolutely fine with us here at downity.com. As a matter of fact, we’re all eyes and all hopes that Brittany will actually appear nude in this movie, but it’s not likely to happen. With four films coming out in 2007/2008 she’s a hot Hollywood commodity at the moment and generally it takes either a career needing a spark or a career in the tank to see some titties up on the screen.
Ah well, here’s what we’ve got for now. But catch
Something that people complain about these days is pollution and traffic. It is no secret that people prefer to bring their own cars to work or any place that they want to go to. However, it is the same thing that other people would want as well and add them all up and you have total discomfort overall.
Add to that it becomes a chain reaction of sorts. Imagine going thru traffic and probably being late for work or a meeting. Sweating it out in the car and being exposed to the harmful fumes and gases which may even make you choke. Add all these up and you get total discomfort and forgettable lives.
But there is a solution. Mass transit and other means of public transportation such as trains, boats and buses, allow the normal consumer to experience a comfortable way of travel. Among the factors that a person would dislike, using this alternative covers most of his bickering over environmental and personal concerns. It all just needs some practical thinking and everyone will be fine and h
This evening was the first time I have been really pissed off at the city. Well, not so much the city. Just its stupid mass transit system. As a Southerner with fading memories of the wide open roads and interstates of my former life, it is still so crazy to me that I can be less than 10 miles away from a destination, and I cannot get there in a decent amount of time.I missed my 6:26 p.m. flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, because of the sporadic incompetence of the New York City bus system. After a fresh manicure and pedicure at a nail salon on 125th Street, I was patiently waiting at the M-60 bus stop near Frederick Douglas at 4:45 p.m. Within the next 45 minutes, only one M-60 bus would arrive, and it was nearly full. I waited as an older woman boarded the bus, then I stepped aside to let a disabled man enter the bus ahead of me. But before I could lug my suitcase up the steps behind him, the driver shut the doors and waved the rest of us back to the curb.I watched at least half a
One necessity that most people need today is that of using alternative means of transportation. We have all been accustomed to using our own cars and vehicles to go to places where we want to reach but we forget that with every travel, we are burning and contributing toxic fumes in the process.
With mass transit we are containing the said problem of air pollution and at the same time helping decrease the spread of toxic fumes. Maglev trains and mass transit means not only eliminates the standard use of fossil fuels, they help decongest the world as far as moving from one place to another faster is concerned.

We are mostly packed and leave New Orleans on Tuesday for Cincinnati. We will take three or so days to drive there, our furniture will take a few more days than that, and the car we are transporting a few days more. Moving is harder than I remembered. For having been being wiped out by Katrina, we sure have a lot of stuff to move. For the last week or so we have had an intense "farewell tour," from Susan's retirement party to my family gathering. In between we have dined with different friends at Galatoire's and Commander's, Liuzza's and Brocato's among other places. It was nice of Mayor Nagin to report the state of the city just before our leaving. He did not have anything to say that would cause us to re-think the move. Does this make us part of the "brain drain?" Once we get settled at the other end, perhaps an "arrival tour" would be in order. We will need to find a guide to the finer restaurants in Cincinnati; we have already booked a few cultural attraction

I was able to get those "free" AirAsia tickets a few months back so I'm on the backpack trail again. As always, I have to transit in Kuala Lumpur. So from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Low Cost Carrier Terminal (KLIA-LCCT), I took the SkyBus to KL Sentral for RM9. The airport is about an hour away from town and it's good they have these shuttle buses since taking a taxi will make a dent in your budget big time! From KL Sentral, I took an LRT to the Pasar Seni Station in Chinatown and after finding a place to stay for the night, I walked around. I had some Indian food (roti canai and Horlicks ais) for early dinner and then went back to the hotel to take a nap while waiting for my SSEAYP friends. I met up with Mariam from Singapore at about 11:30 p.m. Then we met up with the Malaysian PYs (Paktam, Az and Dayang) for some late night drinks. The next day, I passed by KLCC to take photos of Petronas Towers. Then I was off to the airport again for my flight to Jakarta, Indonesia. I

(With apologies to whoever came up with the Latin phrase "sic transit gloria mundi" ("thus passes the glory of the world").)Now that the time has come, I can barely make myself type it: This will be my final post. There, I said it!!I was working on the computer a few weeks ago when my train of thought was interrupted by a voice in my head that said "You need to focus on expansion, not reduction." It came so out of the blue that it'd have been easy to attribute it to an outside source, but since there wasn't so much as a wisp of smoke rising from any of my bushes I accepted it as a message from my subconscious mind, one so major that it'd come bursting into my consciousness in this unprecedented way. Although I wasn't working on anything blog related when it happened, I knew instantly that it was a reference to how I'd steadily given up everything I used to do with my free time in order to be able to write decent posts, and that... that... I needed to stop blogging and go back
Major Transport Inc., a Minnesota-based dry van carrier, has sold some of its assets to a newly formed company called Major Transport of Indiana, it was announced today. The agreement was signed May 2. The new company was established by the Oren family, which also owns Dart Transit Co. The transaction makes Major’s freight and customer base available to Dart.
According to sources at Dart, the new company, Major Transport of Indiana, is based in Sellersburg, Ind., as a driver fleet, and contracts its truck and driver capacity to Dart. The two companies will operate as separate but cooperating companies.
The old Major operated primarily in the 11 Mountain States with 250 company drivers. Dart operates with 2,500 owner-operators, primarily east of the Rockies.
“The Dart and Major operating areas are very different, so the two companies complement each other very nicely,” David Oren, president of Dart, said. “Major’s customer base gives Dart access to new freig
Talk about seeing the writing on the wall, but ignoring reality…Going back as far back as the mid-80’s, NY Transit cops now say they have been summarily discriminated against based on their race. For instance, Detective Marshall Mazyck (Black) asked for a 1984 transfer to an anti-crime unit, when a White commander came right out and told him “We don’t want ni**ers in this unit.” That should have been the first clue to talk to a lawyer. That’s direct evidence of racism!! Nevertheless, Detective Mazyck stayed on the job.Today, a group of minority transit cops, including Detective Mazyck, have filed a $12 million lawsuit against the Metro Transit Authority (MTA) for systematic discrimination. The cops say they were often subjected to racial slurs, were frequently passed over for promotions, and were even denied many overtime opportunities. For anyone who knows anything about these jobs, you can make a killing on the overtime alone. Overtime pay will SUBSTANTIALLY boost your ye
More people, more vehicles, more of everything means new ways of navigating our cities.
In the six years I’ve lived in Los Angeles, four of them have been without a car. This wasn’t an accident. Rather, this was a conscious choice that I gladly made after weighing all of the options.
For many, this decision would be tantamount to social suicide, especially in a town where everything is known to be “20 minutes away” regardless of actual distance or amount of traffic congestion.
But it’s nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It was a simple matter of shifting my priorities and aligning my lifestyle habits to match them.
So how does a metropolitan person in the 21st century go about ditching a car?
The first thing I did was move closer to my job and along the path of a major bus line. This diminished my commute from 35 minutes of stressful driving to twelve minutes of blissful “me time” - I was free to read or write or listen to music or just enjoy t

I urge everyone with an eclipse or at least a sun or moon conjoin or opposition the nodal axis be more prepared with contingencies; also a sun/uranus relationship, particularly conjunction. Funding for public transportation is woefully inadequate here in Canada. Outside of our major cities (and even in the suburbs of our largest cities), public transport does not receive enough funding. So when Stephen Harper pledged $37 million today towards public transit (part of a $80 million promise back in June), one would think that people of "non-blue" political stripes would be heaping praise on the Tories.Sadly, there is little to praise Harper about. All of the funding is to go to transport security. Not better quality public transport. Not more quantiful or convenient public transport. But "higher security" public transport.Stop me if I'm alone here, but this is the most ridiculous and unnecessary waste of money from a government supposedly obsessed with stopping government wastage. We don't have armed military on every Canadian street corner. Nor do we have CCTV installed in every nook and cranny of our cities, as the British do. So why spend so much money making publi
